The Bundesliga is back, and so is Talking Fussball's coverage of the top flight of German football - for a 12th season running! After all this time, we've just about seen it all, but there are a few new wrinkles. First, while English Premier League clubs continued to buy up the Bundesliga's best, one also saw fit to sell an established star in Harry Kane - how will he fit at FC Bayern and Germany? Second, this season is the first since 1965-66 that the German capital is only represented by one club that is not Hertha BSC - are 1. FC Union Berlin ready for their maiden UEFA Champions League challenge? Join Matt Hermann, Nik Wildhagen and Terry Duffelen for all this and much more. It seemed like Dortmund might be on the verge of a period of dominance...until reality hit. Here comes the first episode in a three-part series on Borussia Dortmund. Over the next three weeks Nik Wildhagen and Terry Duffelen, author of Borussia Dortmund: A History in Black and Yellow will walk you through a few pivotal phases in the history of a special club. BVB enchants fans all over the world - with so many young stars playing attacking football in front of one of the greatest in-stadium atmosphere in sports, it's an easy club to fall for. It's a sporting and commercial powerhouse, and it's widely seen as the second force in German football (after the all-conquering FC Bayern München). But it wasn't always this way. BVB underwent a fundamental transformation in the 1990s, which brought a first Bundesliga title and a determination to play in the financial big leagues. As you'll hear, however, it wasn't all smooth sailing... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Borussia Dortmund is one of Europe's most celebrated football clubs. Its story is one of tenacity, rule-breaking and of fighting the power. As a German club you might find it unusual to discover that one of the club's biggest supporters is a bloke from Croydon.  Terry Duffelen fell in love with Borussia Dortmund some years ago, and co-founded the long-running Yellow Wall, Borussia Dortmund podcast. He's also just released his debut book Borussia Dortmund: A history in black and yellow.  In this episode we explore why football, and sport in general, is one of the perfect narratives, we unpack the difference between writing the history and a history of a subject, and we discuss the fear and excitement that's involved in releasing your work out into the wild for the first time. Your host is inkjockey founder Mark Heywood.Behind The Spine is an inkjockey production, and the audio accompaniment to The Writing Salon. Sign up to the newsletter here. Just fifteen minutes remained in the afternoon's slate of matches, and not only had seven of the eight teams in action failed to score (snooze), but also the one team that had scored - champions for the last nine years and counting FC Bayern München - had already put six past their hapless opponents on their way to a 7-0 win.
