Big week for BVB! Dortmund had a strong showing away in Munich, drawing with Bayern 2-2 and followed up with a dominant 3-1 win over Barcelona at the Westfalenstadion. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough of a comeback to move on in the Champions League. In this episode, we're reviewing both matches and what the performances can mean as the end of the Bundesliga season draws near. JOIN OUR DISCORD
While both sides suffered second-leg defeats, it was PSG and Barcelona that progressed to the Champions League semifinals. Musa and Ryan begin at Villa Park, where Aston Villa beat PSG 3-2 on the night (02:33) and very nearly sent the game into extra time. Barcelona also had a scare at the Westfalenstadion (25:49), where they lost to Borussia Dortmund—thanks to a Serhou Guirassy hat trick—but ultimately did enough to push through, leaving Barça to face a clash with either Bayern or Inter. Hello Rank Squad! It's time for this week's first Champions League Takeaway - looking back at Tuesday's Quarter Final second legs, where both PSG and Barcelona emerged with qualification intact, but with their reputations bruised and having been handed on-the-night losses by Aston Villa and Borussia Dortmund, who were both excellent. In the absence of Dean, who is flying back to San Diego, Jack is joined by football podcast royalty in Mike Zimmermann - to talk through both of the games and discuss the ramifications in more detail. We start with Aston Villa's impressive 3-2 win over PSG, where the Parisien favourites were given an almighty scare in the second half by Unai Emery's charges, who managed to break free of PSG's impressive counter-attacking hold after the break, going hell for leather and finding themselves some Gigi Donnarumma magic away from taking Luis Enrique's men to extra time. Then in Part Two, we head to the Westfalenstadion, where Dortmund had very little to lose, but managed to expose the Barcelona high line enough to give the Yellow Wall plenty to shout about. Serhou Guirassy's hat-trick had Barça very worried for a time, and although the Catalans progressed, they were subjected to defeat in a single game for the first time in 2025. It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?
Arminia Bielefeld and VfB Stuttgart may have just saved the soul of German football. The third-division side rose to the challenge and bested double winners Bayer Leverkusen in front of a roaring Alm. In Stuttgart, Angelo Stiller lit up the Neckarstadion with a screamer as they ousted Leipzig from the cup and will now meet Arminia in the final. It was a bad week for the soda club all around. After losing their game in Mönchengladbach and ceding their 5th place to the Foals, Leipzig fired coach Marco Rose. Elsewhere, Union and Heidenheim picked up surprise wins, while Borussia Dortmund played one of their best league games this season, overcoming red-hot Mainz 05 at the Westfalenstadion.
The Bundesliga returns with several intriguing games. In Frankfurt, two high-scoring teams, led by their red-hot strikers Ekitike and Woltemade, are battling for European football qualification. Another forward in fine form is Borussia Mönchengladbach's Tim Kleindienst. Fresh off his strong showing against Italy, he and the Foals are looking to overtake Leipzig with a home win. However, the player to watch is 20-year-old homegrown hero Rocco Reitz. Bayern and Bayer play cellar dwellers in the comfort of their home stadiums, while struggling Borussia Dortmund hosts surprise package Mainz 05 at the Westfalenstadion. Can the struggling Borussen capitalize on Mainz's missing captain and star player, Jonathan Burkardt?
Hello Rank Squad! It's time for Champions League Takeaway, your late night delivery following the action - following the first legs of the Round of 16, where we saw a lot of favourites come out on top, but perhaps not in the way we expected! Wednesday night saw Bayern's 3-0 demolition of Leverkusen - did Xabi Alonso overthink this one? - as well as Liverpool dropping an all-timer of a smash and grab job against PSG, where Alisson Becker gave a masterclass in the Redmen net. Barcelona also showed their versatility by beating Benfica with 10 men, whilst Inter were incredibly mature (and kept ANOTHER clean sheet) in a fairly routine 2-0 win over Feyenoord at De Kuip. In Part Two we move onto Tuesday's action, starting with a topsy-turvy Madrid derby that saw three wondergoals - and Real Madrid taking a narrow 2-1 advantage over city rivals Atletico Madrid - thanks to some magical footwork from Brahim Diaz. We also chat through Arsenal's demolition of PSG where the Gunners reloaded the ammunition tank to score seven after back-to-back blanks; Aston Villa's 3-1 win over Club Brugge where they were perhaps a little fortunate the scoreline looks so pleasant; and Dortmund dropping off to allow Lille to fight back for a 1-1 draw at the Westfalenstadion. It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?
The Kovač era starts with a loss in the Bundesliga and a win in the Champions League…so what's new? In this episode, We are back to discuss BVB's 1-2 loss to Stuttgart at the Westfalenstadion and the 0-3 win away at Sporting Lisbon. CONNECT
It's time for The Truth!Borussia Dortmund parted company with head coach Nuri Sahin this week after a set of deeply concerning performances that have seen a giant of German and European football languishing in 10th in the Bundesliga, as well as falling out of the automatic qualification places in Europe. But the problems at the famous Westfalenstadion go far deeper than just a rookie coach seemingly out of his depth. Instead, they are endemic to the very fabric of one of the most well-known clubs in the world - issues with recruitment both on and off the pitch have led to this malaise, as well as failing to keep up with the changing times around them. We take a look at the decline of their league form, that was somewhat papered over by an excellent Champions League run last season, problems with getting the right kind of people in place to allow the club to flourish, and the 'keep it in-house' nature of the front office, all of which have contributed to this fall from grace. So can these problems be turned around? Or are Dortmund destined to be a fading force for more than just the immediate future? The Truth is somewhere in the middle...

LISTEN TO THE FULL SHOW HERE On today's bonus show Manu and Stefan take a look at Dortmund's 1-1 draw away to PSV in the first leg of their Last 16 tie in the Champions League. The Bundesliga side were once again pretty boring to watch, but the result now means that Edin Terzic's side are in pole position to win the tie in front of their own fans at the Westfalenstadion.
On this week's main show Manu and Stefan are once again joined by the Athletic's Seb Stafford-Bloor to push to one side a rather boring 1-0 win for Bayern Munich against FC Köln to instead discuss whether Harry Kane is already a better striker for the Munich club than Robert Lewandowski ever was. The trio then breakdown Borussia Dortmund's dramatic 4-2 win over the Foals and whether or not is has convinced anyone that Edin Terzic is still the right man for the job at the Westfalenstadion. Then, to wrap up the show, Seb fill us in on his recent interview with Heidenheim head coach Frank Schmidt. Enjoy.
With Ryan just back from Dortmund, he and Musa focus their attention on Bayern's 4-0 win over BVB at the Westfalenstadion, thanks in no small part to another triple for Harry Kane (06:17). They discuss the start, what Thomas Tuchel got right and maybe where Edin Terzić may have had regrets, plus the experience of being back in one of Europe's greatest stadiums for one of its marquee fixtures. They also round up some Premier League (38:38) results before wrapping up with Fluminense's victory in their first Copa Libertadores after they defeated Boca at the Maracanã (41:34). CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TO THE FULL EPISODE On this week's bonus show Stefan is joined by Matt Ford to discuss a number of topics, as the pair dig into questions provided by subscribers. How much will Stuttgart get for their star striker? Is the Westfalenstadion such an eye-sore? Are Bundesliga goalkeepers overrated? And what's the best way to get to Elversberg? All that and more answered on today's show.
Musa and Ryan focus their attention on Germany this week, beginning with Bayern's men securing their 11th straight Bundesliga in a row with a win in Köln while Dortmund drew 2-2 at home to Mainz (02:44). They discuss Dortmund freezing at the Westfalenstadion, the shock felt around the league, and the aftermath of an eventful season for Bayern that cost Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic their respective jobs as CEO and sporting director. They then heap all the praise they can on Urs Fischer for guiding Union Berlin to the Champions League (32:04), as well as Christian Streich, whose Freiburg side narrowly missed out. After all that, they touch on Bayern also securing the Frauen-Bundesliga (40:22) before wrapping up a dramatic day in the 2. Bundesliga, where Hamburg missed out again on automatic promotion (42:07), as Heidenheim scored two in stoppage time to win the second tier and join the already-promoted Darmstadt in the top flight. They finally wrap up with some other stuff around Europe (48:33), including Mauricio Pochettino's confirmation as the new Chelsea head coach and Luciano Spalletti leaving Napoli.
