Join the Redshirt Cinema Club as we discuss this week's film - Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan.Star Trek: The Motion Picture might have been slightly rubbish but, powered by the love of the fans, it earned enough money to defy critics and turn a profit. And so Paramount greenlit a sequel - Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan. What will Rob make of this more classic take on Trek? Will the team ever recover from Ricardo Montalbán's astonishing pecs? And will the childhood trauma of Khan's brain eels have faded by the time you're 43 (spoilers: Nath says no)? We'll be answering these and literally several other questions in this episode. Boldly go into our most gloriously geektacular (and yes, longest) episode as Javi and Paul embark on an epic exultation of the soaring sacred text that is STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN. On June 4, 1982, Nicholas Meyer arguably saved the franchise by redefining it as a space opera mashup of Horatio Hornblower and Run Silent Run Deep, with a virtuosic score by the great James Horner. Instead of making sequel to 1979's STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE, Meyer cunningly chose to forge a follow-up to the 1967 episode “Space Seed,” reuniting Ricardo Montalban with the iconic role of Khan, unleashing his towering performance as the ultimate antagonist. (And stick around until the end for a shocking decision about what our next movie will be!)

There's no way to scrub quickly through the previous 495-ish episodes to find out, but it's possible we've never had two movies featured in the main episode that are so tonally at odds. First, Megan talks about MEAN GIRLS (2:01), the new enjoyable musical comedy about teen cliques based on the Broadway musical, which is adapted from the 2004 film. Directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. and written by Tina Fey, it stars Angourie Rice, Reneé Rapp, and Auliʻi Cravalho. Then, Dave and Megan discuss Felipe Gálvez Haberle's Western THE SETTLERS (10:29), a movie so gruesome in its depictions of genocidal violence in 1901 Chile that Dave can't stop nervous-laughing throughout (even though it's an exceptionally well-made movie). Finally, we all review GOOD GRIEF (29:12), which, as Evan points out, is not a Charlie Brown biopic, but Dan Levy's new comedy-drama, co-starring Ruth Negga and Himesh Patel. We had mixed reactions. Over on Patreon, we talk about STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN, so check that out!

Mark Maddox and I return to the Star Trek feature films! This time we tackle the big one – the one that kept the franchise alive – STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN (1982). It's an important film for Trek fans and also an important part of the astonishing list of genre releases from that year. We briefly discuss the other films from 1982 to demonstrate the pivotal nature of the cinema of that time and its long-term effect on the genre. For this episode we assume you have some knowledge of the film and spoilers are in every corner of every deck. You have been warned. We each relate our personal history with the film starting with theatrical viewings and then we dig into the details that make this one a classic. The selection of Nicholas Meyer as director is pointed to as the choice that probably guaranteed the project's success with his melding of the various script ideas into a cohesive whole. The cast is discussed with Shatner, Nimoy, Kelley and Montalban singled out for praise for their excellent performances. Mark recounts his discouraging encounter with an odd form of homophobia when seeing the film for the first time and we compare the first film's special effects to the smaller budgeted sequel. The story's commentary on aging comes under scrutiny as both of us think about the changes in ourselves since this film came out. We ain't getting any younger, that's for sure! If you have any comments about Star Trek thebloodypit@gmail.com is the place to send them. We'll be back in a few weeks to continue this journey with Kirk and the gang and we hope you'll join us.

With the appearance of the eagerly anticipated new Christopher Nolan biopic about Oppenheimer, Matthew Sweet turns his attention to film scores bent on destruction, including Ludwig Goransson's score for the new film. The programme includes music from The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, When Worlds Collide, Melancholia, Wandering Earth, Deep Impact, Armageddon, The Man Who Fell To Earth, Rogue One - A Star Wars Story, Star Wars - A New Hope. The Classic Score of the Week is Star Trek II - The Wrath Of Khan.

Today’s guest is the amazing writer and director Nicholas Meyer. While Meyer is probably best known as the writer and director of the beloved sci-fi sequels STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN and STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY and also as the director of the sci-fi adventure TIME AFTER TIME and the devastating nuclear disaster TV movie THE DAY AFTER, our conversation revolves around his Sherlock Holmes stories. In 1974, Meyer published the bestselling novel THE SEVEN PER-CENT SOLUTION, presented as a rediscovered manuscript in which Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective meets Sigmund Freud in Vienna who cures… The post Talking Pictures #22: Nicholas Meyer, Writer of THE SEVEN PER-CENT SOLUTION appeared first on Talking Pictures.

This month we're joined by the author fantasy author Juliet E. McKenna, creator of several epic series including The Tales of Einarinn, The Aldabreshin Compass sequence, The Chronicles of the Lescari Revolution, and The Hadrumal Crisis trilogy. Juliet talks to us about one of the very first examples of what we might term "modern fantasy" - Hope Mirrlees' 192 novel Lud In The Mist. Juliet and I talk about where Lud sits in the canon of fantasy - we compare it to Tolkien, for example, and Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast books, as well as other modernist literature from the post-WW1 years of the 1920s. There is talk about borders, the liminal spaces between spaces, and the reconciliation of our own prejudices and biases, as well as of silly names and Mirrlees's "interesting" approach to worldbuilding. Juliet talks to us about her own writing experiences, with particular reference to English folklore, myth, and the countryside, which is prevalent throughout her work and none more so than her current Green Man cycle of novels and her forthcoming Arthurian novel The Cleaving. We also discuss fantasy emerging from other cultures and parts of the world, and how writers should approach the writing and representation of other cultures. Elsewhere, The Judge takes a break from her advisory talks and gives her own opinion and analysis of Lud In The Mist, which places the idea of laws, frameworks, and legal structures at the heart of the novel. We have two writing challenge winners in Doug Van Aarten and Jo Zebedee. Lastly, to coincide with the 40th anniversary release of Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan, Captain Kirk is having trouble getting hold of the Division 4 football results, and lays the blame squarely on a certain green-blooded, pointy-eared crew member. Next Month In October we'll be joined by the author Steven Hall to discuss his smash hit debut novel The Raw Shark Texts. What could make the greatest film summer of them all, 1982 - where within four months POLTERGEIST, STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN, E.T., ROCKY III, BLADE RUNNER, THE THING, CONAN THE BARBARIAN, TRON, FIREFOX, AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN, PINK FLOYD: THE WALL, THE SECRET OF NIMH, THE ROAD WARRIOR, NIGHT SHIFT, DINER and more, ... which 40 years ago all opened back-to-back / week-after-week - even better? How 'bout reliving that time with the people with whom you first saw many of those movies! That's what we did - inviting three of our closest life-long friends to step into the WayBack Machine with us to that most memorable summer. And, hey, in doing so we realized it wasn't just the films themselves which gave us that lifetime of memories we cherish to this day, but the fact that it was also a very special time of life associated with those movies which we came to emotionally - sometimes subconsciously - link to them. And as such, whether - like us - you got to those now-classic flicks of '82 in the first "POS" car you ever owned or on bicycles, whether those four months helped heal a first-time broken heart, or whether it was the last time you and your own personal STAND BY ME / STRANGER DAYS / FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH-like group of friends were ever together in the same room before separating to the four winds, to this day every time you rewatch one of those films a piece of you zooms back to the time and place you first saw it - and with whom you saw it - faster than Doc Brown can say "Great Scott!" or "1.21 gigawatts!".__________________________________THE MOVIE SNEAK PODCAST is part of The GullCottage/Sandlot - a film blog, cinema magazine, growing reference library and online network "Celebrating The Art of Cinema, ... On Episode 102 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis celebrates the 40th anniversary of STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN! This is the Star Trek film which saved the franchise in 1982, and is considered to be the best film of the franchise by many a Trekkie (including Curtis)! Assisting Curtis in this endeavor are two very special guests... First of all, there's LAURA BANKS, the actress who portrayed Khan's Navigator on the stolen USS Reliant. Laura shares a lot of great behind the scenes info on the making of the film, as well as her brief relationship will William Shatner; all of which is more intricately detailed in her upcoming book, Close Encounters With Captain Kirk: The Making of Star Trek II (and the Rest of It) as well as her Interview with Shatner on her Podcast! Also, legendary filmmaker STAN WOO chimes in and shares his fandom of the franchise, this film, and how all of it inspired him to make his own Star Trek fan film starring George Takei entitled YORKTOWN: A TIME TO HEAL! Back on Episode 090 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis celebrated this fan film with John Atkin, who first heard about the unfinished film in 1987 via Starlog Magazine Issue #119 and contacted Woo about it in 2010. Together they recruited a team of volunteer professionals to help finish the project. So the latter part of this episode serves as a bit of a part 2 to Episode 090! Additionally, Mr. Retrovere shares this week's Retro News segment. Incidentally, you may help the RetroZest podcast by purchasing a unique STAR TREK T-Shirt or two (many different designs and colors!) from our store at store.retrozest.com/startrek. Tom and Julee cover aaaaaa lot of ground in this episode. They start out with a bit on candy, then they slip into a handful of ON POINT impressions, Tom talks some major Star Trek, new game points are flying around and the oh-so-80s Trivial Pursuit is unearthed and launches a new set of in-show BTTB games and you can play along! It's a good time! Now in their forties, Julee and Tom Antonellis are reconnecting as brother and sister in THE MOST distant a socially-distant podcast can be in the United States. While recording on each coast (and seeing each other over FaceTime) all the way from Los Angeles (Tom) to Boston (Julee), they start unearthing the core lessons, laughs and connections of their childhood. Plus, Julee has to fight her fear of cobwebs while Tom enjoys the comfort of his office -- yet he CAN'T touch his beloved toys like she can. As their Instagram bio indicates -- @backthroughthebasementpod -- you can follow them there to see pictures of everything they unearth -- Tom & Julee (actors, comics, voiceover artists & siblings), children of the 80s, must go through all their toys and belongings in their parents' basement. After a mixed reception to Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the boys are ready to give sci-fi's second greatest franchise another chance as they discuss what has become a favorite amongst fans of the genre. As it turns out, all you have to do to make a good Star Trek film is hire a director who doesn't care about the show, cut the budget in half, and make William Shatner feel insecure about his age. THE OSCAR, the epitome of acting excellence, many have done that one or more movies that wins them that statue....almost. There are some actors and actresses that should have atleast one Oscar, there are some movies that should of been atleast nominated, but some strange reason they're not. MORGAN FREEMAN(1), JAMES EARL JONES(0), GLENN CLOSE(0), MICHEAL KEATON(0), EDDIE MURPHY(0), MICHEAL CLARK DUNCAN(0) to name a few who should have more then just one Oscar or there first Oscar. HEALTH LEDGER (rip) got one after dying, CHADWICK BOSEMAN should of won after he died, and they're are movies that should of won an Oscar (THE DARK KNIGHT, MALCOLM X, STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN, THE GREEN MILE), but the Academy Awards is a old school institute, that still believe in THIS ACTOR DESERVE IT MORE THEN THIS ONE or THE DIRECTOR OR MOVIE DESERVE IT MORE, but I guess that's why I don't work for the academy, cause EVERYONE would get one. thebhp2.0@mail2american.com/anchor.fm/bhp20. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bhp22/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bhp22/support

Star Trek Discovery Podcast, featuring Picard and Lower Decks
Star Trek: Discovery – Short Treks, Season 2 Episodes 4 & 5: Ephraim and Dot/The Girl Who Made the Stars We’re back with not just another episode of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast! No, not at all! That’s because this is episode 47!!! This time, Ruthie and I cover the fourth and fifth Short Trek of Season 2: Ephraim and Dot, which was written by Chris Silvestri & Anthony Maranville, and directed by Michael Giacchino; and The Girl Who Made the Stars, which was written by Brandon Schultz and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. Both of these animated Short Treks were released Thursday, December 12, 2019. We aren’t separating these… We decided not to release these as separate episodes because we didn’t get a lot of feedback on them, especially The Girl Who Made the Stars. Therefore, we’re releasing them as a single episode. Fred’s Pics! Fred from The Netherlands was kind enough to collect a LOT of images for these Short Treks. Therefore, we use them to tell most of the story! First of all, we have some feedback on the last two Short Treks… We had feedback for the last two Short Treks and the episodes in which we covered them, The Trouble with Edward and Ask Not, so we start off with that. Short Treks Season 2 Episode 4 – Ephraim and Dot This one used two “characters” that were introduced on Star Trek: Discovery: The tardigrade from Season 1 (assuming it’s the same one), and the DOT-7 that we saw in the season finale of Season 2, Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2. It’s told in a Tom & Jerry style. We didn’t really agree about this episode. Ruthie didn’t care for it at all. I loved it, but I had one major continuity problem with the Short Trek. More on that in a bit. We start with black and white images… To start, we get an old film to start with. Would they have this in the 23rd Century? I don’t think so because that’s not even a thing today, but that’s a minor point. We begin…

In the first of a recurring series publishing every second Friday, the guys discuss some 'words to live by'. Martin kicks it off with a great PJ O'Rourke line that has become his motto. Francis goes Star Trek, and Robert of course brings it full circle with humanism and faith. Our quotes this time are:"It's one thing to burn down the outhouse, its another to install plumbing" by P. J. O'Rourke in his book Holidays In Hell;"It has always been easier to destroy than to create", spoken by Spock in Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan but written by Gene Roddenberry, Harve Bennett, Jack B. Sowards and Nicholas Meyer (with some help from Samuel L. Peeples), and,"Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve." by Napoleon Hill.
Our 40th anniversary of STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE celebration continues as the Treksperts sit down with EDDIE EGAN who not only helped launch STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE for Paramount in 1979 but was Unit Publicist for STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN and STAR TREK III: THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK and went onto a legendary career in Hollywood publicity and promotion for virtually every major studio in the business (but not the flooring business as we learned). Now, Egan joins the Treksperts and special guest ROBERT MEYER BURNETT (director, Free Enterprise) to share his incredible true stories about marketing Star Trek as well as the secretive WRATH OF KHAN prequel, PRISON PLANET, that never got made. #StarTrek #TOS #TNG #TWOK #LLAP

It’s a double sci-fi feature! “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” wraps up our series of films directed by Robert Wise. A movie that was mired in delays and controversy from the very beginning, we feel that Robert Wise’s signature touches are missing from the film and we both want to get our hands on the Director’s Cut to see what this film may have been intended to be in the director’s original vision. “Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan” on the other hand, wow! This is an explosive, action packed and surprisingly deep film directed by Nicolas Meyer. We go into the details, and probably miss a ton of interesting facts, but in the end we enjoyed both films.

VHS Rewind! Season 3 Episode 12 Psycho II (1983) Yeah, yeah, we know, we get it, we understand, Hitchcock/PSYCHO, Hitchcock= PSYCHO, Hitchcock is PSYCHO, even more than Tony Perkins' Norman Bates. Fuck Hitchcock. Forget Hitchcock. It's old, he's old, you're a poseur to talk Hitchcock, Hitchock this, Hitchcock that. Dude, whatever. I'm more impressed if you champion the lesser-known, the hardly-known-at-all things: Corky Siegel's Chamber Blues, Vietnamese iced coffee over anything at Starbucks, xerox printed fanzines from the late 1980s / early '90s over digital musings of the faceless internet, Spider-Man as drawn by artist Ross Andru throughout the 1970s over Spider-Man as drawn by artist Steve Ditko in the 1960s, PSYCHO II over PSYCHO. I can count on the fingers of one hand how many times I have watched the original PSYCHO but PSYCHO II, on the other hand, is, like, well, double digits. Lots of double digits. #polydactylism This is one of the greatest sequels ever made, its ROAD WARRIOR great, 1978's DAWN OF THE DEAD great (I hate how I actually have to qualify which one I mean because of the abominable remakes/reboots/reruns that are a daily part of our lives nowadays, already deadened by rampant shootings and Donald-Trump-for-president-for-real), STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN ferchrissakes. This week, VHS Rewind hosts Chris and Mark will have you doubting your sanity with their black-is-white, white-is-black, through-the-looking-glass, PSYCHO II over the original PSYCHO babble. - Christopher

In Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, we learn that Kirk fears obsolescence, Khan fears embarrassment, and Spock fears nothing. Which, you know, is a benefit and a curse, because he ends up dying. Plus! Kirstie Alley. Do we need to say anything else? iTunes Google Play RSS
