Simon Smith – Curator/ Curatorial & Accessioning National Film and Sound Archive of Australia The National Film and Sound Archive's (NFSA) major digital exhibition Radio 100 launches a new chapter with Youthquake, which charts the rise of radio as a vital force in the emergence of youth culture in Australia. Youthquake highlights the transistor as the first go-anywhere form of media, enabling teenagers of the 1960s to leave the family wireless in the living room and become the first generation to personalise their listening experience. It was, says NFSA curator Simon Smith, ‘a pocket-sized rebellion against the conformity of gathering around a single device'. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It was a great pleasure for this week's Nostalgia Interviews podcast to meet Simon Smith who was at Lampeter from 1988-91, where he studied Religious Studies, and then stayed on for the Interfaith Studies MA. Simon worked in a bank for six years before going to university, and we find out why he chose Lampeter of all places, and he reflects on the shape of the department of Theology and Religious in those days. He talks about how he could never have expected to write an essay on The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy before embarking on his course. We talk about the perennial question ‘Are you religious?' and why it is important to study religion without having to subscribe to a particular tradition. Simon explains why he enjoyed the interactive element of MA teaching, and we learn about his work at the Philosophical and Religious Studies Study Centre in Leeds. Simon was born in Chester, moved to Hull and then near Birmingham, and we talk about Simon's music interests including the blog he writes. He was nine years old when he bought his first single, and we learn that his mother had the Light Programme on during the day when he was very young. His father was a BP tanker driver and Simon remembers once picking out a jukebox single while on one of the journeys. We find out too about Simon's radio memories including John Peel's shows, and listening to the charts on Tuesday lunchtimes when he would write down the Top 40 as it was being broadcast and would then share it with his friends at school. It was the centre of the week. Simon also used to create his own charts. Simon shares his thoughts on the music press and seeing John Peel and Gary Numan on Top of the Pops, and hearing the news of the death of John Lennon on Radio 1. We discuss the role of cultural memories and the death of cultural icons, as well as the seminal role played by Miles Davis and seeing The Damned perform on The Old Grey Whistle Test. We talk about quasi-memories and whether we can remember the memories of other people, and at the end of the interview Simon discusses the ways in which bad and good memories have affected him, and he reveals the lesson that he would impart to his younger self.

GUEST: Simon Smith - Ukraine Forum chair of steering committee, Chatham House ---------- Any territorial concessions by Ukraine in a peace agreement with Russia will reward crimes and aggression. They will encourage, not end, Russia's attacks on countries in its neighbourhood and elsewhere in Europe. The belief that Russia and Ukraine need to strike a deal (see preceding chapter) is frequently accompanied by the belief that a settlement has to include some Ukrainian territory being conceded to Russia, because Russia won't settle for an outcome that does not include territorial gains. In this view, Crimea is often presented as the least problematic potential concession for Ukraine: supposedly a post-Soviet ‘grey area' in terms of recognized borders. ---------- SPEAKER: Simon Smith chairs the steering committee of the Ukraine Forum at Chatham House. He retired in January 2022 from a 35-year career in the UK diplomatic service. He served in London, Tokyo, Moscow, Vienna as the UK Governor at the IAEA, was the Perm Rep to UN in Vienna and HM Ambassador to Austria, in Kyiv as HM Ambassador to Ukraine and in Seoul as HM Ambassador to South Korea. He has also served as Director, Russia, South Caucasus, and C Asia, at the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office and as Head of NE Asia & Pacific Department at the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office. ---------- LINKS: https://www.chathamhouse.org/2023/06/how-end-russias-war-ukraine
This talk was given to the PLS in 2001 by Winifred Dawson. Winifred was born in London, but educated in Belfast which is where she met Larkin when they were both working at Queen's University Library. Win also went on to write herself and published a biography of Amy Audrey Locke, a muse for the poet WB Yeats. Win opens with a reflection on Larkin's love for his parents, However, the talk is mainly about Larkin's relationship with the women in his life: Ruth Bowman, Winifred, Monica Jones, Patsy Strang, Maeve Brennan (who is listening in the audience) and Betty Mackereth. Ruth, Maeve and Win went on to form a friendship, having first met at Ruth's house in 1993, 8 years after Larkin died. Maeve Brennan can be heard very briefly at the end of the talk. The talk is full of humour, and a frank account of her feelings about Larkin, as well as readings of Larkin's poetry and letters. The poetry readings were not recorded at the time of the talk, and so are instead read by members of the current Philip Larkin Society committee. We have also added the 1975 poem ‘When first we faced' after Toads Revisited as a second poem about Betty Mackereth. Books and writers mentioned: Philip Larkin: A Writer's Life by Andrew Motion(1993) Philip Larkin Selected Letters ed. Having been out of the cut and thrust of goalkeeper coaching for close to a full season, it was awesome to sit down with a man who's had time to reflect on his career and the fine art of goalkeeping. Simon Smith is the ultimate glovesman. He's worked with one of the most solid No1 and No2 duos the Premier League can ever boast in Shay Given and Steve Harper, he's travelled the globe to expand his understanding of the position and he possesses a bank of knowledge and experience not many others can lay claim to. This is the first part of a lengthy chat with the affable ex-Newcastle United man, who was kind enough to invite us into his home up in Tynemouth. A shorter Part Two - focusing more on a few stories of those he's coached over the years, plus his time with Sir Bobby Robson - will come next week.

Simon Smith is the CEO and Founder of Excalibur.FM - the decentralised podcasting/audio platform. Simon has had a career that has included many things. Starting out his career, working for a bank as a systems developer, he managed to escape the corporate world in 2004 and start making a living as a private trader in the futures market. He also became an Angel Investor in early stage tech and has been running the two investment strategies successfully alongside each other for the last 19 years. Having had multiple exits for the start ups he invested in and ridden out some very hairy investment cycles, he has achieved financial freedom, but still continues to work hard. Simon started investing in Crypto in 2013 and took a deep dive down that rabbit hole over the years to get a really good understanding of the technology and what it can do for us all. Bringing together his understanding of economics, finance, technology and the psychology of human incentives, he holds high hopes that decentralized systems can create a revolution in money, media applications and governance structures. He now runs a team of developers that he funds from the money that he has made out of crypto investing. They are building user applications on top of the block chain. The main application they are working on right now is Excalibur.FM, a decentralised audio application that enables creation of NFTs of their audio content. The one and only Jesse Thorn (Maximum Fun, JJGO, Bullseye) takes a spin today! Jesse shares his thoughts on the little things (e.g., Rit Dye) that make Famous Folks' humanity shine through. And of course we talk about his celebrated interview with Randy himself a few years back. This is a situation akin to Married With Children's "Meet the Man Who Met Andy Griffith", and boy is Dan glad he didn't think of that reference while he had Jesse on the line. Jesse makes a compelling case for music inherently being not funny, but I'm sure yours is the exception, gentle listener. We bounce through a lot of songs - Simon Smith, My Life is Good....., before finally settling on God's Song (That's Why I Love Mankind). Jesse's take on it is surprisingly optimistic. Then the WHEEL responds with a classic, and Dan drops some Morrissey on your butt.
