As MPs returned to Westminster after the summer recess, this week we're looking ahead to a crucial autumn for this government, packed full of potential pitfalls as they hope year two in office is an upgrade from a tricky first 12 months. But after a clunky internal Downing Street reset and distracting revelations about Angela Rayner's tax affairs, things have not got off to the best start, with a high-risk Donald Trump visit, party conference season, the ongoing smalls boats crisis and Rachel Reeve' sophomore Budget to deliver, things don't get any easier for Keir Starmer and his team in the coming weeks.Joining host Alain Tolhurst to discuss how Labour navigates its way through all of this are two of the party's MPs; Antonia Bance, the member for Tipton and Wednesbury, and Jess Asato, the MP for Lowestoft.Alongside them are Chris Hopkins, Political Research Director at the pollsters Savanta, along with Adam Payne, editor of PoliticsHome. To sign up for our newsletters click herePresented by Alain Tolhurst, produced by Nick Hilton and edited by Ewan Cameron for Podot
Today on the podcast... Chris Hopkins is failing to tell the truth over the lifting of the foreign house buying ban. Hip suggests foreigners will flood our shores buying all these houses. They won't. Just 0.2% of all sales last year were houses over 5 million. Just, just over a hundred. Stu Nash says his old labor colleagues are deluded and out of touch if they want to block rich foreigners coming into the country with their capital. Let me tell you what Chris Hopkins is busy doing to the Covid Inquiry. Let me tell you, when he says that the Covid Inquiry is providing a platform for those who have conspiracy theorist views, he is trying to undermine it, and he's doing that. So it doesn't matter what the outcome of the inquiry is, people have already written it off as a nut job investigation. I suspect Chippy already knows that he's not going to come out of this flash. Neither is Jacinda. Neither is Ashley. Neither is Grant. Because we already know what went wrong. We can see that the lockdowns went too long. We know that the border was done badly. We know how much money was printed, to name just a few things that they did wrong. It's kind of rich of Chris Hipkins to complain that the terms of reference have been deliberately constructed to achieve a certain outcome, because that's coming from the guy whose government did exactly the same with the original Covid Inquiry. They set up such a limited set of terms of references that we had to set up a second inquiry after they lost the election just to get to the stuff that we actually care about, which is the mandates and the Auckland lockdown, and so on. They set up an inquiry, deliberately designed their words to only learn lessons, not assign blame when actually blame, or you can call it just taking responsibility, is exactly what a lot of us affected by all of this stuff would like to see. But what really bothers me about what Chris Hipkins is doing is the continual demonising of conspiracy theorists. Now, look, I don't love a conspiracy theorist. They're a bit nutty. I've had to sit through lectures about the world order hours on end, trying to be polite and pretending that you care because you love the person, right? A lot of these people went down the rabbit hole because Labour forced to the jab on them, so they went off to do their own research and they came back a bit strange. They shouldn't be excluded. They may be conspiracy theorists, but they're still our friends and our brothers and our uncles, even if they're a bit slightly different at the moment. Conspiracy theorists or not, they were as affected by these decisions as everyone else, therefore, they get a say too. And whatever, by the way, happened to “they are us”? Or does that only apply when it suits Labour? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A panel of foreign policy experts joins host Alain Tolhurst to look at global affairs, the dangers the UK faces around the world, how the public feels about them, and what Keir Starmer's government can do to tackle the big security issues. Sophia Gaston, who works at the ASPI think tank, Tobias Ellwood, former defence committee chair, and Chris Hopkins, political research director at pollsters Savanta, discuss whether it's Russia and Ukraine, Israel and Gaza or China and Taiwan, if foreign policy will end up distracting Labour from their core domestic agenda fixing the country's public services and growing the economy. Later in the episode former Conservative defence secretary Grant Shapps, and the new chair of the foreign affairs committee, Emily Thornberry, both speak to Alain about those threats, and how the government can help the public feel safer in our increasingly dangerous world. As the new Labour government introduces its landmark legislation to nationalize the railways, host Emilio Casalicchio asks: How do we get the trains to run on time? He travels to Japan, where privatized high speed trains whiz passengers between cities at 300 mph and delays are measured in seconds not minutes. And he examines the nationalized rail system in Switzerland, home to a joined up transport network with passenger experience at the heart of the business. Former Transport Secretary George Young tells Emilio about the process of taking British Rail out of public hands and into the private sector — and says he still believes it was the right move for the U.K.'s railways. Rail boffins Chris Hopkins, Gareth Dennis and Christian Wolmar analyze the Japanese, Swiss and British systems — and weigh up the pros and cons of private verses public. And the experts also assess Labour Transport Secretary Louise Haigh's prospects for getting the U.K. train network back on track. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Some countries, like Canada and France, have bans on polling close to the election. Many figures on both sides of the campaign have been frustrated at how the media is consuming polling. What is a polling blackout, and why do some people want one? Megan McElroy speaks to Katy Balls and Chris Hopkins, polling expert and political research director at Savanta. Elsewhere, David Tennant has taken aim at Kemi Badenoch. She has, to little surprise, responded. With one week to go, does the electorate have any appetite for a culture war?

Chris Hopkins is organizing the Pella All-Original Music Showcase on Saturday, September 16th, with five bands performing their music from noon to 8 p.m.
The Korgis are a legendary British pop band whose music has resonated with audiences for decades. With their distinctive sound and heartfelt lyrics, they have left an indelible mark on the music industry. The band was formed by singer/guitarist/keyboardist Andy Davis and singer/bassist/guitarist James Warren, both of whom were former members of the renowned 1970s group Stackridge. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, The Korgis rose to prominence with their hit singles, "If I Had You" in 1979 and "Everybody's Got to Learn Sometime" in 1980. These songs showcased the band's ability to craft infectious melodies and introspective lyrics, capturing the hearts of fans around the world.Though the band experienced some lineup changes over the years, The Korgis of today continues to captivate audiences with their unique blend of talent and creativity. Founder member James Warren, the original vocalist, has remained a constant presence in the band. Joining him is John Baker, who has taken on additional lead vocalist duties since 1992. Al Steele, a member of The Korgis' live band in the 90s and their 2017 comeback, contributes his exceptional guitar skills. The band also welcomes multi-instrumentalist Danielle Nicholls, who adds her own flair on guitar, vocals, and percussion. Completing the lineup is the highly skilled studio drummer, Paul Smith. In a remarkable turn of events, The Korgis found themselves embarking on a unique musical journey intersecting with history. On July 21, 2023, the highly anticipated Christopher Nolan film, "OPPENHEIMER," was released. Coincidentally, The Korgis had been in the process of writing a song about the enigmatic figure known as the "Father of the A-Bomb" himself, J. Robert Oppenheimer.Oppenheimer's story is one of complexity and intrigue. While he played a pivotal role in the creation of the atomic bomb, he later dedicated his life to the pursuit of peace. The Korgis recognized the extraordinary nature of Oppenheimer's life and sought to honour his legacy through their music. Collaborating with songwriter Chris Hopkins (aka Exhibit-1) and Al Steele, James Warren spearheaded the creation of a song that would be anything but ordinary, just like Oppenheimer himself. The Korgis brought this ambitious project to life, infusing their signature sound with the profound narrative of Oppenheimer's life. With their meticulous attention to detail and unwavering commitment to musical excellence, they crafted a song that does justice to the complex story of J. Robert Oppenheimer. The Korgis' music inspires and captivates audiences, bridging the gap between generations with their timeless pop sound. Through their extraordinary storytelling and masterful musicianship, The Korgis have secured their place as one of the most revered British pop bands of all time. Hosted on Acast. Enter this iconic building to hear stories from those whose lives have been changed here. A place of architectural and cultural significance defining this Northwest seaside town. A magnificent Victorian engineering masterpiece. Blackpool Tower is one of Britain's best-known landmarks - 158 metres tall and inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris, when it was opened in 1894 it was one of the tallest freestanding towers in the world. The Tower is in fact an entertainment complex comprising The Tower, Tower Circus, the Tower Ballroom, and Roof Gardens. Recorded in ambisonic audio, listeners will be immersed in the sound and fabric of this building, moving from place to place with those whose stories unfold. Karl Bartoni, born and bred in Blackpool, remembers seeing the tower for the first time when he was three years old. In the summer of 1983, he became the first (and last) person to dangle from the top of the tower attempting to escape from a straight- jacket. Former trapeze artist Laci Endresz Senior and his family have been in charge of the Tower Circus for over 30 years across six generations of circus performers. As a ‘flyer', Laci once broke 17 bones during a stunt. We hear from a former delivery driver Chris Hopkins who taught himself how to play the Wurlitzer organ and landed his first gig playing at Blackpool Tower Ballroom. He now plays weekly to those who flock here to dance in the splendour of the Tower Ballroom. The gold, majestic ballroom designed by Frank Matcham, one of the most significant theatre architects of the 19th century, is where families have danced for generations. Marilyn remembers her parents dancing at the Tower in the 1930s and every time she steps inside the ballroom, she says it feels like home. After a high profile career designing, drawing and painting images for movie poster art in Hollywood — Return of the Jedi, Labyrinth, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom — Chris now feels driven to produce works which celebrate compelling stories of American perseverance — the Tuskegee Airmen, First Nations peoples of America's Pacific Northwest, and the Japanese Americans who were incarcerated during WWII. It's been an unusual career path, to say the least. Chris was a star on the Southern Oregon College wrestling team when he dropped out in 1974 rather than bow to the inevitable pressure to become a high school wrestling coach. He loaded up his '68 sky blue Camaro and hit the road, picking up jobs from southern California to Montana and living out of his car. After he ran out of gas in Boise, Idaho, he settled there for a year and a half and worked as a bouncer at the Bronco Hut (the college bar where he met his wife), a lift operator at a ski resort, and as an utterly unqualified counselor at a home shelter for troubled boys. All the time he created art — drawing behind the bar, sculpting unflattering portraits of ski resort personnel, and carving the bar's Billy club into a more appealing shape. Chris' older brother convinced him he'd soon be too old for this bohemian, aimless lifestyle and that he might want to apply to the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. He put together a crude portfolio, submitted an application and remembers “it surprised the crap out of me when I was actually accepted”. In the middle of the college program, Chris still hadn't figured out a painting system that he liked, so one weekend he locked himself in a room and refused to come out until he'd conquered it. In 1979, he graduated from Art Center with honors. A diploma from art school, so what next? Pouring and finishing concrete for foundations, walkways, driveways and most everything else that required concrete until he heard that legendary illustrators Charles White III and David Willardson were starting a studio and looking for young talent. Chris' persistence paid off and he was hired. After months of sketching he was finally assigned to paint the marquee art for The Mountain Men. Soon afterwards he discovered the airbrush and the whole process became fun, especially incorporating brushwork with airbrush techniques. He painted the clouds, skies, and water all from his Pacific Northwest childhood memories, and was known as The Sky King, a tribute to his unmatched ability to paint natural backgrounds After four years, Chris left Willardson and White ready for his next challenge — painting people. Yes, he learned to do that, too painting and drawing the comprehensive and finished poster and magazine promotional art for Return of the Jedi, Peggy Sue Got Married, Labyrinth, The Abyss, and who could forget the portrait of the studly Harrison Ford on the Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom theatrical advance poster art? In 1988 he picked up his family and relocated to the state of Washington where he's once again tackled a new, but classic, technique. Now he's brush-painting stories of American perseverance. Show Notes: Chris's early job experiences Working for Charles White III and David Willardson Traveling as an artist for the Air Force Chris's revolutionary work with airbrushes Painting the Tuskegee Airmen and The Japanese Incarceration “Hidden Heroes: The Nisei Soldiers of WWII” Future exhibitions Resilience www.artistdecoded.com www.chrishopkinsart.com www.instagram.com/chrishopkinsart
