What if I told you that for a short time, Tough Mudder had a huge focus on elite racing and gave away more money than any other race company? In 2017, TMHQ produced a timed morning wave, 8-hour overnight events, and Tough Mudder X, which they called "The Toughest Mile on the planet". All these events had cash prizes and broadcast deals. Here are snippets from press releases at that time. ..."Tough Mudder, the active lifestyle and media brand, has partnered with Facebook to deliver original, live event sports and fitness programming on Watch, Facebook's new platform for shows. Facebook will be the exclusive video platform for the new $50,000 Tougher Mudder Championship race series and Weekly Tough Mudder Bootcamp fitness studio classes" ..."The deal features the launch of the new sports event, Tough Mudder X, named “The Ultimate Race to Determine the Fittest and the Fastest Athletes in the World.” With the new agreement, all Tough Mudder television programming – Tough Mudder X, America's Toughest Mudder, and World's Toughest Mudder – will now debut on CBS. Encore presentations of the shows will air on CBS Sports Network in prime time" Like many other chapters in our book, the events were here, they were awesome, and then they were gone. On today's episode, Hunter and Beni interview Mack Roesch, who made nearly 100k from obstacle racing last year, and is aptly nicknamed "the Mack Truck." Mack Roesch is 215 lbs of 4% body fat shredded colby beef, and they get to talking about: -How all 3 of the people on this episode have competed on the Skullbuster of Steve Austins Broken Skull Challenge, Spartan Ultimate Team Challenge AND were top 10 finalists in Tough Mudder X... -How getting smashed to the point of crying over and over in pee-wee football turned him into the psycho competitor he is today... -Mack's favorite way to workout to stay jacked like a sweating onion yet insanely fast on the course... This week, Yancy Camp athlete Beni Gifford joins me on the podcast to talk all about The Warrior Race in South Africa, Tough Mudder X, and why the mental game is so important to your race. We start by talking all about the Warrior Race, from the format, to the obstacles, to why he considers it one of the most difficult races he's ever ran. He shares his experience and talks about his 5th place finish in the Black Ops race, what is what like to be the first international athlete to complete the course, and what the competition was like. We also go into Tough Mudder X: Beni tells us about his experience at the debut event last July, and we discuss what the future of TMX will look like as it opens up to the general public in 2018. Lastly, Beni talks about why he prefers short courses, which leads us into into a discussion about mental strategy and why it's so important to your race. The book Beni referred to is The Science of Running.
He seems to come out of nowhere, when people start to wonder where he's been, then like a wrecking ball, he destroys the competition. Tough Mudder recently released its CBS debut of the new format in OCR competition, Tough Mudder X coined as the toughest mile on earth and offered $25,000 in a winner take all event. Hunter made short work of the preliminary and then bettered his time by nearly a minute in the finals to take home the cash. Then on to The US OCR Championships and once again Hunter succeeded over a highly competitive field to win both the short and long course events.

As many of you fans are aware (if you follow the sport of obstacle racing), Tough Mudder came out of the box with a new product... Tough Mudder-X which was a stadium style short course, action packed, high intensity event. The field was tight and packed with stud and studettes from the OCR and Cross-Fit communites. The promo was relatively hush, hush but now that its done and the program is slated to air on CBS in August we can talk a little about it. Given the winners were posted all over social media, I think its safe to offer a congratulations to my friend and client, Hunter McIntyre for taking the win. Before you get too excited, this episode does not cover the race. It is an interview I did with Hunter a few months prior. I felt it might be interesting to revisit his mindset leading into this new event. Full disclosure: we knew of this event at the time of this initial broadcast.
