We've got some good news and some bad news. The good news is that we're talking to Cirocco Dunlap, the showrunner of The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy, easily one of our favorite shows right now. Season 2 just came out, and we talk to Dunlap about cute body horror, dealing with mental illness, and interspecies romance. Then contributing host Maggie Tokuda-Hall brings us some bad news. She talks to Kelly Jensen, who runs the newsletter Well Sourced, bringing us up to date on all the latest developments in book bans and library censorship in the United States. Madeline, Emilio, and Julian are joined by Julian's oft-mentioned cinephile cousin Sylvie for a standalone discussion about Andrzej Żuławski's singular film “Possession” (1981). Distinctly mixing a drama of romantic turmoil with elements of body horror, spy thrillers, and creature features, “Possession” centers on the alternatively broad and grounded performances of its two versatile lead actors, Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill, to deliver a film worthy of high accolades yet relegated to obscurity for many years, due to its transgressive content and difficulty to classify. The group break the film down through elements such as its dynamic cinematography and memorable secondary characters, in addition to finding notable comparisons to other films (the Cronenberg name looming large), considering what it's like to flail around in Berlin's U-bahn, and wondering what ever happened to calling people “Bob.”  If you enjoy our podcast, please rate and review us on your podcast platform of choice.  This really helps us find new listeners and grow!Follow us on IG and TikTok: @sleeplesscinematicpodSend us an email at sleeplesscinematicpod@gmail.comOn Letterboxd? We all have that one thing we just can't watch. For me, it's body horror -- the kind of horror where grotesque and disturbing things happen to someone's body, like in The Thing, The Fly, or The Substance. There is a long history of body horror as a form of social commentary and special effects showmanship. I respect the artform, but I can't stomach the art. So I decided to figure out why. I talk with Chioke l'Anson (horror fan and voice of NPR underwriting), author David Huckvale (“Terrors of The Flesh: The Philosophy of Body Horror in Film”) and author Xavier Aldana Reyes (“Contemporary Body Horror”) about how this subgenre taps into fundamental aspects of being human that we often try to put out of our minds. Plus, I speak with listener Lillie Andrick about why some transgender fans, like her, feel a special connection to body horror. This week's episode is sponsored by ShipStation. GUY GARDNER: WARRIOR #0 (1994)It is our first podcast guest in a LONG time as Shawn's brother -- the mighty Brian Marek -- joins us to talk about pivotal (to Shawn and Brian at least) 90's comic GUY GARDNER: WARRIOR. It is the Zero Hour issue that reboots Guy as a descendant of a race of peace-keeping aliens who have been traveling the cosmos in a quest to create the perfect, well, warrior. This all gets SUPER body horror pretty quick, with veiny cannon arms and flesh syringes. For the most part, we put this over pretty strongly because the Guy Gardner aesthetic from his era is totally 90s and totally pro wrestling and it's the best. All this plus we chat about the Ultimate Warrior's corpse running amok in the DC Comics offices, Power Girl's forgotten baby, Guy's Irish heritage and which foods you should NOT bring to an orgy.[ONE MORE THING — this podcast was recorded using Streamyard and may eventually come out as video on our YT channel. That being said, the audio does have some aberrations and skips that were unavoidable or skipped over so please bear with us. It was our first time recording the podcast in this format and will need to fine-tuned. On this edition of Parallax Views, Terrifier 2 & Terrifier 3's star final girl, Lauren LaVera, has a new fright flick, The Fetus, coming out on March 7th that'll combine comedy and body horror! And it'll also feature horror icon Bill Moseley, know for his roles as the brutal killer Otis Driftwood in Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses & The Devil's Rejects and the demented Choptop in Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, in a deliciously macabre role as a blind veteran with psychotic side. As you can probably surmise from the title, the movie will tackle pregnancy horror and creature feature thrills vis-à-vis a demonic baby. If you're a fan of 80s horrors like John Carpenter's The Thing or Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street, you'll be glad to know that the movie relies heavily on practical creature effects. It also promises to be a timely fright flick in light of the debates the rage on in American culture over abortion. Joining us to discuss the movie is the film's director, Joe Lam. We'll talk about the experience of working with Lauren LaVera and Bill Moseley, the long process of writing the movie, the influence of Orson Welles' Citizen Kane on Joe, the film's use of practical effects and the award-winning work of Alex Rojas on the creature effects, the decision to release The Fetus unrated and increasing obsolescence of the MPAA ratings system in the age of streaming, thoughts on Sean Baker's Oscar speech in which he made a call for defending independent film and movie theaters in an age where both are under threat, balancing comedy/humor and horror, the importance of story and character development in Joe Lam's approach to horror, and much, much more!

In this episode of No Film School, GG Hawkins sits down with Jérôme Eltabet, the editor of the Oscar-nominated body horror film The Substance. Jérôme shares his journey from assistant director to editor, detailing his work with director Coralie Fargeat to bring The Substance to life. He breaks down the editing challenges, the importance of sound design, and why cutting a horror film is all about creating an immersive experience. In this episode, No Film School's GG Hawkins and Jérôme Eltabet discuss: How Jérôme transitioned from assistant director to editor What it was like editing 300+ hours of footage for The Substance How sound design and score shaped the film's tension The massive changes from the first cut to the final version How the film's themes influenced its pacing and cutting style The collaborative dynamic between Jérôme and director Coralie Fargeat Memorable Quotes: “I do remember I gave a call to Coralie to say, ‘Oh, this movie is going to be very long.' And she told me, ‘Shh, don't tell anyone! We'll talk about this later in the edit room.'” (8:38) “We had maybe 150 different versions of some sequences because Coralie needs to have the kind of goosebumps to like it. It's not something you can explain—she just has to feel it.” (10:29) “Coralie didn't want any realistic sounds. Everything had to be slightly off. The world needed to feel unnatural, unsettling—like something was always wrong.” (13:14) “The first rough cut was three and a half hours. Coralie wanted a perfect edit, a perfect sound design, so we fought to get the movie as tight as possible without losing its impact.” (32:10) “As an editor, you are the first audience. You have to trust your instincts, because six months later, after watching the same footage over and over, you'll start doubting yourself.” (37:47) Guest: Jérôme Eltabet – Editor of The Substance, known for his precise, immersive approach to editing horror and psychological thrillers.
