Chet, Nick, Clara, Leland, Tor, Adam, and Romain. So many guests! This time, Tor, Romain, and Chet chatted with a few people on the Jetpack Compose team, about... Jetpack Compose!Compose hit Beta a couple of weeks ago (don't believe me? Check out the recent Android show on Compose Show!), so we took the opportunity to talk to some of the people that have helped build it. We talk about the current state of the library, but also about some of the design decisions that went into developing the APIs and functionality.(Note on the audio quality for this episode - it turns out that mixing so many people, all of whom recorded themselves separately using very different hardware and setups was... tricky. It's listenable, but maybe a tad below the level we shoot for. Blame the pandemic. I do.)Subscribe to the podcast feed or download the audio file directly.#TheAndroidShow: Jetpack ComposeThe Jetpack Compose site (overview, tutorial, docs, samples, and more)Chet: @chethaaseRomain: @romainguyTor: @tornorbyeNick: @craftyClara: @clarabayarriLeland: @intelligibabbleAdam: @adamwpThanks to our audio engineer, Dustin Elm, who has handled all of our audio mixingfor the last couple of years, including the tricky part of mixing all of our remote-recorded episodes, like this one.Dustin's moving on to (greener? softer? louder?) pastures, so we'll be usinga new, exciting process for mixing future episodes. Or even [pre-]ART History time!We didn't take a picture this time. Please imagine what we looked like. This time, Tor, Romain, and Chet were joined by Dan Bornstein, one of the early members of the Android team. Dan joined in 2005 to create a runtime for Android, which became Dalvik. We talked about some of the early placeholder VMs used while Dalvik was coming online, some of the design decisions for Dalvik (like its register-based vs. stack-based implementation), and nice techy details about runtimes, garbage collectors, and optimizations.Subscribe to the podcast feed or download the audio file directly.Chet: @chethaaseRomain: @romainguyTor: @tornorbyeDan: @danfuzzThanks to continued tolerance and support by our audio engineer, Dustin Elm.

Romain, Tor, and Chet talked with Jesse Wilson from Square. Jesse has worked on several popular open-source libraries, including OkHttp, Okio, and [Ok]Moshi. We talk about those libraries, and others, and about Android, library, framework and Kotlin development. And about that nasty habit some engineers have of turning a feature request or minor annoyance into a project of creating a new open-source library instead.Favorite quote, from Jesse:"I started with 2k. Paging2, using Kotlin, coroutines, and Flow for optimal implementation and APIs. (But note that there are also APIs for developers using the Java programming language and/or RxJava, so take your pick). As I mentioned Monday the countdown to Woodworking in America 2011 is on and in full swing. I hope you plan on attending the lectures or at least make it for the marketplace, it's like walking into the most amazing woodworking store ever! Imagine asking the tool makers themselves about the item you want to buy vs a sales person (no offense sales people LOL!) Today's episode is the second compilation of previously unseen footage I recorded. This time it's from the 2009 Design and Construction conference in St. Charles, IL. Again, I wish it could've been more, but that's not fair to the presenters and way to much to download. On Friday I'll post links to many of my previous episodes that were released each year, including the 2010 Conference. So come back to check that out. function recordOutboundLink(link, category, action) { _gat._getTrackerByName()._trackEvent(category, action); setTimeout('document.location = "' + link.href + '"', 100); } Help support the show - please visit our advertisers
The countdown to Woodworking in America 2011 has entered the final weeks. With about a month left on the calendar before woodworkers from all over the country (and even FROM other countries) flock to Cincinnati Ohio for what has become for many, THE WOODWORKING EVENT OF THE YEAR, I wanted to share a few of my favorite moments from WIAs past. I've been very privileged to be able to attend each year, and appreciate being invited back, so for those of you who can't make it for what-ever reason I always try to get as much footage as possible to give you a little taste of the experience. This whole week I'm re-posting links and footage from the last 3 years, along with a couple of videos of previously unseen content. While I'd love to post the entire length of the lectures, it's not fair to the presenters and quite honestly that's a lot of footage, so you'll have to enjoy these short snippets. Hopefully you'll be able to attend a conference in person, if not this year than maybe in upcoming years. Today's episode is the first of my previously unseen videos (actually the first snippet was seen, I've just re-edited it slightly) it's from the very first Hand Tool Conference in Berea Kentucky 2008. These snippets of various lectures are a great example of audience participation and the wide range of amazing experts and topics the shows cover. function recordOutboundLink(link, category, action) { _gat._getTrackerByName()._trackEvent(category, action); setTimeout('document.location = "' + link.href + '"', 100); } Help support the show - please visit our advertisers
JUNIOR ASPIRIN RADIO SESSION 13: EXERCISES IN STYLE 'It doesn't seem to me that anyone has discovered much that's new since the Illiad or the Odyssey'Raymond Queneau'The audience, which consisted largely of bikers, was unusually hostile, and Iggy, as usual, fed on that hostility, soaked it up and gave it back and absorbed it all over again in an eerie, frightening symbiosis. "All right," he finally said, stopping a song in the middle, "you assholes wanta hear 'Louie Louie' we'll give you 'Louie, Louie.'" JUNIOR ASPIRIN PODCAST 11: "EXPLAINING LIMBO"The UK is in limbo, frozen in time, being kept "alive" in cryonic support at −273.15°C. Andy Cooke presents a collection of tracks hanging in a suspended animation, a kind of activity schedule for purgatory. More or less pagan, but all virtuous, some of these cuts are noisy, some are contemplative - some will survive for minutes, others might keep well for centuries. The plan is to replace all the organic elements with synthetic hardware in preparation for a cybernetic crisis free future, probably without a banking system.PODCAST HEREAdd podcasts to itunes hereTracklisting: I'm So Depressed - Abner JaySix Feet (from my baby) - Zola JesusMax Ernst - Mission of BurmaFirst World of Bronze - CromagnonThings to Do (I've Tried) - David ByrneI Know - Need New BodyShawnee Tribe - Link WrayWheels Turning - Durutti ColumnBoat Woman Song - Holger Czukay The Other Four - Flying Wagon / Warmth FerryThe Talking Horse - The MelvinsDeath is Forming - Jay ReatardHappy Time - Daniel JohnstonPale Gallery - Amon Düül IITonight - Iggy Pop
