The Anderson Shelter, the pop-up sheds distributed to millions of Londoners during the Blitz was first erected on February 25th, 1939 - in the garden of Mrs. Spong, in Carlsbad Street, Islington. Devised to protect civilians from Nazi air raids, and handed out free to those who earned under £5 per week, the shelters were dug four metres into the ground and covered with earth, provided cramped but potentially life-saving cover for families during bombings. In this episode, The Retrospectors reveal why, nonetheless, millions of Londoners sought refuge in Underground stations; discover the creative external decorations proud homeowners adorned to their shelters; and consider how such terrifying experiences transmuted into fond memories for so many survivors… Further Reading: ‘How to construct an Anderson Shelter' (The National Archives): https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/education/resources/home-front-1939-1945-part-one/how-to-construct-an-anderson-shelter/ ‘How Britain's abandoned Anderson shelters are being brought back to life' (The Guardian, 2018): https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/aug/21/how-britains-abandoned-anderson-shelters-are-being-brought-back-to-life ‘Your Anderson Shelter This Winter' (British Pathé, 1940): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHyxP3epU-w This episode first aired in 2024 Love the show? What is the Body Roundness Index (BRI) and could it replace BMI?

What's a quick measure of how healthy you are? Most people would say Body Mass Index or BMI. But increasingly, experts have come to the conclusion that BMI has several limitations. Why? For one thing it was made using data from 19th century Europeans and does not work well across different populations. For another, it does not tell you the composition of your weight, or crucially, where that weight is located. Indians are genetically predisposed to putting on more weight around the abdomen region, and it is this fat that puts at risk of various diseases including diabetes. And this where another index comes in – the Body Roundness Index or BRI. Devised in 2013, studies over the last decade have now shown that BRI may be a better predictor of what health risks you may face. BRI, unlike BMI, takes your waist circumference into account, essentially letting you know if you are too round, and therefore unhealthy. How does the BRI calculation work? What has research about it shown so far? And is it a better metric for Indians to use? Guest: Diana Thomas, the mathematician who devised BRI. Ten of the country's most promising tech entrepreneurs have completed the first Furthr Foundry Accelerator Programme, Ireland's latest Pre-Seed Accelerator. The intensive 12-week programme concluded this week at the Guinness Enterprise Centre (GEC). On the final day, the participating start-ups took part in investor pitches and had one-on-one meetings with leading Irish VCs and Angel Investors. During these meetings, each start-up engaged in detailed discussions about their business plans, received valuable feedback, and sought investor perspectives. The ten high-potential start-ups who completed the Pre-Seed Accelerator Programme will now be seeking to raise a combined pre-seed capital investment of up to €4m. Winner of the 'Most Investable Start-Up' award announced on the Finale Day as voted for by the panel of investors, was Safely, founded by Jack Manning. Safely serves commercial vehicle fleets in the US, UK, and Ireland by offering a driver safety solution that has been estimated to reduce claims by over 50 per cent. In addition to being recognised as the 'Most Investable Start-Up', Safely also received a cash prize of €3k, sponsored by Growing Capital, the leading provider of pre-seed private investment in Ireland. Commenting on the Furthr Foundry Accelerator Programme and what the "Most Investable Start-Up' award recognition means for his company, Jack Manning, founder of Safely, said: "It's great to have won! It's validation that all the hard work to date is worth it. And it really does make me believe that I can grow this business, get the investment I need to really scale it to the level I want to scale it to. So, it's unbelievable validation, great to have won it. But the job's only really starting I suppose." Commenting on the programme and the engagement with the participating start-ups, Gianni Matera, founder of Growing Capital, said: "If the aim of this pre-seed accelerator is to prepare start-ups for their pre-seed round, then I believe it has been successful. Many start-ups are now ready to apply for a PSSF, and some are even poised for an HPSU round." The panel of investors attending the finale event included representatives from some of Ireland's most active Venture Capitalists and Angel Investors, including Sure Valley Ventures, Elkstone Private Partners, Growing Capital, Furthr VC, Delta Partners, Enterprise Ireland, Seedrs, ACT Venture Capital and Furthr Investor Network. Speaking to the Start-Ups on the Finale Day for the Furthr Foundry Accelerator Programme, Martin Murray, CEO at Furthr, said: "Today's final part of the Foundry Accelerator Programme culminating in the finale day, is hopefully only the beginning of our journey in supporting your growth and in realising your ambitions for your respective businesses. Our success will be measured by supporting our clients to become 'investor ready' to take on their first institutional investment and myself, along with our business and investor mentorship teams, look forward to working closely with you to make this happen." Devised by Furthr, the country's leading business innovation centre, in conjunction with the programme's key partners including Growing Capital, Microsoft's Founder Platform and the Guinness Enterprise Centre, the Furthr Foundry Accelerator Programme sets out to support, prepare and deliver 10 investor ready high potential start-ups who will take on pre-seed investment following their successful completion of the programme. Companies participating in the inaugural Furthr Foundry Accelerator programme included a wide range of diverse tech empowered businesses and industry sectors, leveraging some of the fast emerging technologies to enable digital transformation for many businesses, including artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, EdTech and biotech. The ten companies who successfully completed the first Furthr Foundry Accelerator Programme were, Allocator Training Institute, Biovit Technologies, Co-Swipe, Decision Analytics, Sa...

“What's wrong with grade 2?” In many cases, nothing. It strikes a good balance between compactness, readability and lack of ambiguity. However, in some cases, a code which is even more compact than grade 2 is extremely advantageous, especially when information needs to be written down at speed. The Braille Shorthand Code was one attempt at creating such a system. Devised and used in the UK, it was last updated in 1959 and still has a loyal following. In this event, we were joined by Dr Norman Waddington, a prolific user of the Braille Shorthand Code for many years. Norman explained the principals behind the Braille Shorthand Code and took us through some examples of some typical shorthand phrases. He also talked about the equipment which was traditionally used to produce braille shorthand and discussed who would benefit from using the Braille Shorthand Code. Carolyn coined the term Groundhog Day Drinker after recognizing in herself that she was tired of waking up on day one of her goals each time she drank. Throughout the process of redefining her relationship with alcohol, she determined three pillars to her success: personal support, brain spotting, and embodied truth. Now, she works to share that experience and information with others who find themselves in a gray-area of drinking. Key Takeaways:  - Consider your habits as a relationship versus a math equation - What works for others may not work for you, but that does not mean you are the problem https://www.carolynrobistow.net/ https://www.facebook.com/Carolynrobistow https://www.instagram.com/carolynrobistow/ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/compassionate-climb/message

The Biden government has been leaning heavily on a law initially designed to fortify national security, to implement its economic strategies, particularly in promoting green energy projects and boosting the production of certain goods to rectify economic matters. Once again, the Defense Production Act (DPA) was brought into action by President Joe Biden in late November. Devised initially in 1950 amid the demands of the Korean War, the DPA empowers the president to regulate domestic industries indispensable for national security. This recent invocation was to channel $35 million towards domestic manufacturing for certain medical components to tackle supply shortages, as the White House explained. The repeated usage of the DPA is not without precedent. The previous administration under President Donald Trump expanded the use of the act during the coronavirus outbreak for increasing production of items essential to national health. There has been a rising worry among economists about the frequent, expanded deployment of the DPA, as it seems to magnify executive power and extend government influence over areas not directly linked to national security.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Barrels are one of those inventions that change the course of human history. Think I'm overstating it? Devised by the Celts and proliferated by the Romans, barrels have carried everything from water to fish to oil and whiskey in the last two millennia. They're (ideally) leak-free, can store things for long periods of time, and are easily moved by one person despite weighing hundreds of pounds. Today, we think of barrels almost exclusively in the realm of whiskey and spirits, but a far richer history is behind them. John Cox, founder and cooper at Quercus Cooperage in New York, learned cooperage the old-fashioned way, taking apart barrels from multiple other cooperages and putting them back together, studying the few texts available, and experimenting with 19th century tools he got from a museum in Canada.  This is truly a from-the-bootstraps story, and a fun one at that. John will also be leading a cooperage demonstration at Kings County Distillery on November 10th. If you can't make that one, follow Quercus Cooperage at the social links below for his next lecture and demonstration.  _________________________________________________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: Ad-free listening is now available to $5/month patrons and above! Over the next decade – and especially during the most acute phase of the Greek debt crisis in 2015 – that all changed. Devised in the 1990s as an informal body without decision-making powers, from 2010 onwards the Eurogroup assumed political authority for negotiating and approving bailout loans and making sure the conditions for those loans were met. By then, finance ministers from countries using the euro had been meeting in this format every month for ten years but – as Joscha Abels writes in The Politics of the Eurogroup: Governing Crisis and Conflict in the European Union (Routledge, 2023) - “the group had been almost invisible to the public". Many memoirs have been written about these fraught years – including duelling books by former Eurogroup president Jeroen Dijsselbloem and short-lived Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis – but Abels has written the first book-length theoretical and institutional assessment of the Eurogroup itself. Joscha Abels is a research associate and lecturer in political economy at the University of Tübingen. Educated at Mannheim and Oslo, he completed his PhD at Tübingen with a dissertation on the role of the Eurogroup. His most recent research work is on infrastructure policy and geoeconomics. His new paper - Does the current crisis mark the end of the EU's austerity era? - published in Comparative European Politics (Volume 21, Issue 2, April 2023) can be found here. *The author's own book recommendations are The Political Economy of Geoeconomics: Europe in a Changing World edited by Milan Babić, Adam Dixon, and Imogen Liu (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022) and Butcher's Crossing by John Williams (first published 1960 - Vintage Classics, 2013). Tim Gwynn Jones is an economic and political-risk analyst at Medley Advisors, who also writes the Twenty-Four Two newsletter on Substack and hosts the In The Room podcast series on EU history from the inside. Who is The Fox? I am The Fox! In 1966 Peter Sellers made a film which this podcaster considers one of his top five despite it being commercially and critically underwhelming. It rarely gets spoken about in the same breath as some of the actor's other movies such as Dr Strangelove, Being There, The Pink Panther or The Ladykillers yet is a highly entertaining international romp featuring a standout performance from Sellers as Aldo Vanucci (AKA 'The Fox') and his co-star the wonderfully ebullient Victor Mature, who sends himself up something rotten as faded Hollywood star Tony Powell. Devised and written by Neil Simon and directed by Vittorio De Sica and also featuring Sellers' then-wife Britt Ekland as Gina, Vanucci's sister, After The Fox centres around an attempt by The Fox and his gang to smuggle stolen gold bullion into Italy by posing as a film crew. Naturally things do not go according to plan! Joining Tyler to discuss it is film lecturer and writer Graham Rinaldi and both struggle manfully to rid themselves of the catchy Hollies theme tune earworm.

Devised in the wake of the September 11th Terror Attacks and subsequent 9/11 Commission casting much of the blame on the lack of interjurisdictional communication between law enforcement, fusion centers have continued to operate in the shadows and outside the realms of the public eye, and even elected officials, ever since. Yet instead of foreign and domestic terrorists, these multi-million-dollar surveillance hubs monitor and collect data about everyday people exercising their constitutional rights to protest, assemble, speak out—or even simply snap a photo in the proximity of something as ubiquitous as a bridge. There's at least one fusion center in every state, 80 in all, with hundreds of ancillary support agencies forming a complex network of local and federal law enforcement agencies—and private corporations—stretching every community across America, with dubious results.  News Beat is a multi-award-winning podcast brought to you by Morey Creative Studios and Manny Faces Media. Site-specific performances have the possibility to truly make all the world a stage.
