News Weakly – 24th August, 2024A weekly round-up of the top news stories in Australia, and around the world; punched in the head until they make sense.Written and presented by journalist & comedian Sami Shah.TOP STORIES OF THE WEEKBeyonce snubs the DNC!And, Labor belabours gendered violence reform! All that, and more, on News Weakly. This week on News Weakly, Sami Shah dives into: The Democratic National Convention wrapped up in the US with high expectations for star-studded appearances, but when Beyonce didn't show, Pink had to save the day. We dissect what this means for the Democratic Party and why Kamala Harris is being painted with whatever colors the media can find. And, Australia's government is making strides to end gendered violence—or are they? Locally, Sami looks at the National Plan to End Violence Against Women and Children, the lack of adequate funding, and why flashy announcements don't cut it. Sami makes a critical analysis of the government's insufficient efforts in combating gendered violence, the impact of rebranding programs, and the potential to redirect military spending towards meaningful social change. Plus, updates on gendered violence across the globe, from India's protests against systemic failures to the Taliban's continued oppression of women in Afghanistan, and how these issues echo the challenges faced in Australia.Quote of the Week:"Escape from New York is a dystopian science fiction movie starring Kurt Russell. Leaving New York is a sad character piece where an alcoholic Nicholas Cage realizes he should have gone to Vegas instead." - Sami Shah, on the government's ineffective rebranding of anti-violence programs.News Weakly is an ad-free listener supported podcast.Just go to patreon.com/samishah to support the podcast!Sami Shah is a multi-award-winning comedian, writer, journalist, and broadcaster. Welcome! Parenting in Hard Mode is a community and safe space for BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, neurodivergent, and differently-abled parents who are raising Gen Alpha kids (born 2010-2024) and nurturing social justice-minded families—all while taking care of our mental health. Allies welcome, too. Please subscribe to connect with fellow parents through empathy and compassion. Let's build our virtual village together.Growing up, I always felt like I was “different” than other kids. I don't know if it's because I'm an immigrant (my family came to the U.S. just after my 8th birthday), have a unique background (half Russian, half Cuban), or if even back then I had a subconscious understanding that I'm queer and neurodivergent. Or perhaps it's just a little bit of childhood trauma due to being parented by a narcissist who early on called me “weird,” the “black sheep of the family,” and often wondered why I couldn't be “normal.” As a teen, I rebelled against those labels thrown on me by the people who supposedly love me unconditionally (hint: not a possibility for narcissists) by instead embracing my weirdness, the things that made me unique, and constantly saying that normal doesn't exist. I even came out as bisexual to my family and friends when I was 16 years old in 2002, something that my friends embraced and my parents got angry about and then pretty much ignored. (I wouldn't know I'm neurodivergent until age 35.)Basically, all the positive things I said about the things that made me “different” fell on deaf ears at home, but I embraced them nonetheless. As soon as I could, I escaped my hometown of southwest Florida to go to college in New York City—and I found my people and myself there. Being different was a strength there, and finding community with other Latinx people, with other queer people, with other different people was easy. It's where I felt most at home and still do. But life circumstances took me out of the city that I'll always call home after 12 happy years, and it's now been eight years since I truly felt like I belonged where I lived. Leaving New York was the right decision but one that still pains me—especially because living in another big city isn't an option either. For a while, I lived in my suburb-without-an-urban-area-nearby hometown in Florida—where I met and fell in love with my husband and had our child—and now live outside of Denver. Close enough that it's not difficult to visit but far enough that going to the city needs to be planned out and, well, I kinda need a good reason to do. “I'm stuck in the burbs” is something I've often said to my closest friends, most of whom still live in NYC. Or “I'm in suburban hell” when I'm having a particularly frustrating day feeling not quite like myself. My feelings about leaving New York are still complicated and there are still many things I grieve about my life there—many of which involve the diverse communities I was a part of while living there. Whether it was singing karaoke at Marie's Crisis while spotting Danny Strong joining in nearby or attempting to try every single burger at Burger Bash during NYC Wine & Food Festival back when it was hosted by Bobby Flay or taking the N train through three boroughs to visit Flushing Chinatown and my favorite panaderia in Sunset Park all in one day, there is just something about the city that I haven't found anywhere else. And as I recently realized in therapy, NYC was probably a spectacular place to live in as someone with undiagnosed Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). There are a million things I can think of off the top of my head that made my life in my 20s pretty perfect for my ADHD brain—and almost all of those things are not possible in my life today. I don't regret where my life has taken me or the way my chosen family changed over the years, but I still miss the things that made me feel the most “me” back then. Even more so, I miss living in a place where I felt safe, loved, and understood for all of the things that made me “different.” It's places like this where belonging feels like a part of the city's DNA, and it seeps deep into your soul. Even for all of the hardships that come with living in one of the most expensive places in the world (and trust me, there are many), I left my heart in New York City. Parenting in Hard Mode is supported by readers like you. Become a paid subscriber to grow our community and nurture the connections we make in this virtual village. As I'm sure you can imagine, living in the suburbs in my 30s has been a completely different experience. It's not like it has been a nightmare or anything. But the older I get, the more I realize that the reason life has been just fine for me in the ‘burbs is because I can easily pass. I can pass as straight since I am in a heterosexual relationship. I can pass as white because I am a very light-skinned Latina. I can pass as neurotypical since I spent my entire life masking without knowing it. But after living so much of my life embracing all of my weirdness, passing as just another stereotypical white working mom living in the suburbs is just plainly killing my soul a little bit. I know that not everyone needs to live their truth, their identities, their life out loud, but I do. I didn't go to school for journalism, work my ass off for the last 18+ years as a storyteller, and leave the city of my heart in order to get (and stay) sober just to end up the black sheep of the family again. Which brings me to this shirt… I found this shirt a couple of weeks ago when I was browsing through funny Mother's Day gifts (yes, really). Lately, I've been discussing in therapy some of these issues related to me being triple marginalized and invisible on all sides, and today I mentioned this shirt to my therapist. “Well, you'll need to figure out if you want to work on adjusting to your current reality and where you live or if you want to work on integrating more of your unicorn self into your life in the suburbs,” they said. “Oh, I definitely want to be a unicorn in the suburbs,” I replied. I don't yet know what this'll mean or how I'll accomplish it, but one of the reasons that I started Parenting in Hard Mode is to connect with fellow parents who live “outside the norm,” those of us who are “different” (aka those of us who come from historically underrepresented communities) as we parent our kids—and especially as we help our kids grow into wonderful little human beings. Personally, I want to raise a little feminist who's anti-racist, queer-friendly, embraces neurodiversity, and generally is loving, kind, and accepting of the wonderful differences in all of us. To do that, I need to remember to show myself that love, kindness, and acceptance. And to do that, I need to also remember who I am and be proud of these facets of my identity—and for me, I feel the most proud when I can visibly and loudly express who I am. So… I guess I'm ready to be a unicorn in suburbia. That shirt's already on the way.Everyone's experience of living their identities out loud is different. How do you express yourself and your individuality/uniqueness at home, at work, in your community? I'd love to hear from all of you!Abrazos,Your friendly neighborhood bisexual Latina mom with ADHD raising a Gen Alpha kid Get full access to Parenting in Hard Mode at irinagonzalez.substack.com/subscribe

People often claim to know what it feels like for caregivers, but it is more than providing daily needs. It requires a lot of patience and understanding. As a former primary caregiver to her father and mother, Lynnda Pollio managed physical and emotional care, family dynamics, house maintenance, and financial responsibility. She is also a Consciousness Doula who helps people understand and connect to energy frequencies that expand self-awareness. Additionally, Lynnda is the author of the multi-award-winning best-selling novel, "Trusting the Currents," and the world's first Chief Consciousness Officer for a global futurist marketing consultancy. Lynnda shares her connection to insects, specifically dragonflies. She mentions her empathic ability, which helped her in the advertising industry. The transition she went through from her younger years to adulthood. Lynnda goes through the experiences of caregiving for her mother and father. The advice she would give to fellow caregivers. The difference between contraction and expansion of the soul. Her involvement in the Dying Well Movement. The different kinds of consciousness. I've sold my home. It's happening. I'm leaving my 16th floor apartment for a place that will require much more maintenance. No more locking-and-leaving. No more stunning sunrises. No more Keith Jarrett on the stereo, sitting in an armchair and watching the World revolve below me. No more Maungawhau. No more Hauturu. No more monitoring the motorway traffic in real time. No more whipping downstairs to the K Road cafes for a pastry and a flat white. I'm embarrassed to say it'll be the first time in my life when I'm responsible for mowing a lawn. I feel a mix of emotions. My apartment is the first and only home I've ever owned. At every stage when my housing has changed, I've felt a rush of sentimentalism. Each shift has marked a different peg in my life, far more meaningful than supposedly significant birthdays. Leaving home for my first shared flat. Leaving shared New Zealand flats for my first New York studio. Leaving New York, coming home, and buying for the first time. Leaving my apartment for something bigger, something without huge windows and a 16th floor balcony. Something child-friendly. I remember when I bought my place, the then Prime Minister John Key was asked for his advice to young people struggling to buy property. Get an apartment, he said! Low maintenance. Cheaper. Close to lots of amenities. He didn't need to convince me. I've always felt at least part of our housing crisis has been caused by a cultural reluctance to embrace high-density living. We associated all apartments with slummy 35-square-metre, tiny-windowed boxes. For many years, it was hard to find warm, bright, higher-end apartments with amenities. My place has a great gym, a big pool, storage lockers, and a billiards room. The walk from the lobby to K Road's rich variety of cafes and restaurants takes approximately 35 seconds. Apartments might have suited first-home buyers. I can confirm they don't necessarily make great investments. I almost certainly overpaid when I first bought my place – I didn't know the market well enough. You live and you learn, right? But I sold my home at a fair price. CV. After agent fees and everything else, I'll basically end up with what I paid for it. You could drive yourself mad by playing the what-if-I'd-bought-a-decaying-bungalow-instead game, and knowing my luck, the apartment market will probably double in the next six months. It's the land value that has wildly appreciated over the last few years. But honestly, I didn't buy my place intending to make money. I bought it as a home. And in serving that purpose, it's been perfect. I'm a big believer that high-density suits people at different stages of life. As well as young professionals, a lot of the people in my building are older. They've downsized. They've had kids and houses with backyards and gutters to clear. They've done that. But now they've reached a stage of life where they value lower maintenance living. They enjoy the communal aspect of living in an apartment building. They love the light and the views and being able to walk everywhere. I feel sad to be leaving the 16th floor. It's been a wonderful home. I'll start packing my moving boxes over the next few weeks. And as I look and leave for the final time, it'll make me happy to know that in 25 or 30 years… there's a good chance I'll be back.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Formerly a Community Health Worker in Dallas, TX, Joyce has an important perspective on health inequities and with the recent Supreme Court's decision related to women's health, some important thoughts on the state of women's health in Texas. Here's her YouTube channel!Bad news! The radio station's mechanism that records all the content failed halfway through the show and I lost the conversation with Chloe, Sari and Aileen about their uteruses, how they've impacted their lives and how the medical establishment has failed them. I wanted to share their backgrounds with you so that you can go out and get their memoirs which go into loads more details from what they shared during our conversation. We talked about how women's stories, now more than ever, are important to ensuring the truth about and support for women's bodies is shared with others.Chloe Caldwell is the author of three books: I'll Tell You in Person, Women, and Legs Get Led Astray. As Botton discovers, the wrong places famously include her own self-suppression and misguided efforts to please others (mostly men). In a series of candid, reflective, sometimes humorous essays, Botton describes coming to feminism and self-actualization as an older person, second (and third and fourth) chances—and how maybe it's never too late to find your way...assuming you're lucky enough to live long. Recorded May 1, 2022 Anna is off due to occupational obligations so I have invited North Carolina based Caps fan and Capitals Admin of the Freeze the Puck Hockey page on Facebook, Jacob Michael to join us. To be honest it was something of a disastrous ending to the season for Our Washington Capitals with all four games resulting in losses. No, not exactly the way to head into the Quest for the Cup for sure. Jake and I break down the past games (well some of them anyway) and get into some soul searching discussions not the least of which being the Caps' chances to get out of the First Round (SPOILER ALERT---IT CAN BE DONE!) as well as open debate on the worst contract currently on the team. Yes it's another long one but we at the Triple will always give you the most bang for the buck! Hang on tight fellow Caps fans, it's playoff time! #StanleyCupPlayoffs2022 #ALLCAPS #FreezethePuckHockey #SportsOTHP #PowerplayPointPodcast

Writer and editor Sari Botton has a long career in the publishing world — some would even call her a “legend.” Her essays have appeared in places like The New York Times and The Guardian. She was the longtime essays editor at the digital magazine Longreads, is now a contributing editor at Catapult and she edited two acclaimed anthologies, including Goodbye To All That: Loving and Leaving New York. Her latest venture is Oldster Magazine, and even though it's about aging it's not about being old. It's about getting older and it features articles and observations from people at every stage of life. Sari is a bonafide Gen Xer and Meghan was curious not just about the process of creating Oldster but also about the challenges of building something in the new creative economy after a long career in traditional media. They talk about what constitutes an “ideal” age, what it's like to get older when you don't “follow the script” of traditional family life, and why many aging people worry as much (if not more) about having enough money than about their health. (Pro tip: Sari buys lottery tickets.) Guest Bio: Sari Botton is a writer and editor living in Kingston, NY. She publishes Oldster Magazine, which explores what it means to travel through time in a human body, at every phase of life. Her writing has appeared in the New York Times, the Guardian, and elsewhere. She's a contributing editor at Catapult, the former Essays Editor for Longreads, and she edited the award-winning anthology Goodbye to All That: Writers on Loving & Leaving NY. Her memoir-in-essays, And You May Find Yourself... will be published by Heliotrope in Summer, 2022.

This is the year that parents must take back control of school boards, former Lt. Gov. of New York, Betsy McCaughey says—This is one crucial way that the torrent of critical race theory education can be turned around. This is happening in various places in America, she adds, but New York has it particularly bad. It's one of a number of issues contributing to the exodus from New York. “These teachers and superintendents are using a simplified, watered-down version of critical race theory that makes white children into oppressors black children into victims, and tells the story of American history as if the only thing that matters is the existence of slavery and the terrible crimes that were committed against African Americans.” Gov. McCaughey describes the ‘battle for school boards' as a contemporary ‘Normandy Beach.'—A battle, that if lost, could see whole generation of children fall victim to damaging indoctrination that reframes society in terms of oppressor versus oppressed. #BetsyMcCaughey #CDC #Pandemic

Við heyrðum hluta af viðtali sem sýnt verður í Kveik í kvöld við Ólaf Þór Hauksson, héraðssaksóknara, en í þætti kvöldsins verður sjónum beint að rannsókn yfirvalda hér og erlendis á meintum mútugreiðslum útgerðarfélagsins Samherja til háttsettra stjórnmála- og áhrifamanna í Namibíu. Við ræddum íslenskt mál við Önnu Sigríði Þráinsdóttur málfarsráðunaut, m.a. nöfn kóngafólks. Leaving New York is a tough choice for many artists, but it was a no-brainer for this week's guests. Returning to Texas allowed Tamara and Trey to realize their dream exhibition space, an outdoor sculpture park. Founded in 2018, Sweet Pass Sculpture Park is located on a one-acre lot in the rapidly gentrifying neighborhood of West Dallas, TX. Their program highlights emerging and mid-career artists from around the world. In our conversation, they talk about how they've built a pandemic-friendly art venue that has become a refuge for many and how "The Great Postponing" affected their exhibition program. These projects include Black Power Naps (Navild Acosta & Fannie Sosa), Ssalute (Marina Rosenfeld) for the 10th Aurora Biennial, The Staff of Aslecpias (Erik DeLuca) The Philosophy of Goo, their first collaboration that received an NEA grant in association with Wassaic Projects, and Tamara's solo exhibition How to Fold a Fitted Sheet all of which opened during the pandemic. Their ability to balance their vision for a "Socrates of the South" with their artistic practice and teaching positions is inspiring. In a post-COVID-19 age, when viewing art safely is not guaranteed, the need for more spaces like Sweet Pass will continue to grow. These two are true leaders and changemakers in the art world, and what Artroverted is dedicated to showcasing. This episode was recorded on October 30, 2020Find out more about Sweet Pass here: sweetpasssculpturepark.comOn Instagram @sweetpasssculpturpark @tamarajohnson @treyburns @ourmuttVisit www.ourmutt.com to purchase the Duchamp inspired dog bowl for the contemporary art lover who has everything. Sarah had a life in New York City that would lead any career driven person to jealousy. A full time job at an established company with nights and weekends off to dine at the best restaurants and skip out to The Hamptons in the Summer. But a reality not unlike the now famous one featured in, "The Devil Wears Prada" drove her away from the bright lights and straight for the hills...literally. And she's not alone. In fact, millions of Millenials are leaving careers in big cities that their parents prayed they would have and are moving closer to nature, thus accepting massive slashes to their income and a complete upside down flip of their current lifestyle. But why? Join Dana, Samantha, and Sarah for a unique journey in search of "the idea" and the mad, unapologetic dash towards what life is truly all about. R.E.M. - Leaving New York. Passenger - Hell or high water. Tónlist: Bryan Adams - Everything I do I do it for you. David Gray - Sail away. - Leaving New York. Not making it big on Broadway might have been frustrating for Baylen Leonard at the time but it was the UK’s gain as, despite having grown up in relative poverty in the Tennessee foothills, he’s now a well known radio presenter, DJ and broadcaster based in London, well known for having been an integral part of the popular Danny Baker’s team on BBC Radio London, and spreading the country music love around the world. He’s also on first name terms with Dolly Parton, now that to anyone is better than any Broadway part. #19 Rockhistorier elsker New York City, alle fem “boroughs”, dvs. bydelene Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens og Staten Island. Not gonna lie- and you can give us your feedback- but I think this conversation with Melissa is the best we've had yet on the podcast, ranging from writing, bodies as objects and bodies as sacraments, Woody Allen, grace, shame, mercy, and the eucharist as an erotic act. Melissa Febos is the author of the acclaimed Whip Smart and the new memoir Abandon Me.
