Kyle Maggart of Brothers Music in Shawnee joined me for Episode No. 155, and I enjoyed the heck out of our conversation. His joint can be found at 12206 Johnson Drive, and they can be reached at 913-766-3869, or followed on Instagram as @brothersmusickc.We talked about growing up, getting into music at a young age, starting a business, and collecting a ton of vinyl.Naturally, we talked about a few of Kyle's favorites, which were these:Blue Train (1958), John ColtraneThe Band's Music from The Big Pink (1968)There's No Place Like America Today (1975), Curtis MayfieldToots & the Maytals' Funky Kingston (1976)Graceland (1986), Paul SimonUGK's Too Hard to Swallow (1992)I'd be remiss if I didn't give shouts out to the late, great Patrick "Potshake Dubwise" DuBois, and his fantastic KDUR FM radio show, Roots, Ragga, Radio, out of Durango, CO's Fort Lewis College (Go, Skyhawks!). Patrick was as kind as they come, and I'll always be grateful to him for both that and for showing me a few corners of the college/community-radio ropes.I'd also be remiss if I didn't give Kyle props for saying that Southern American Gospel might be the next frontier. One of the cooler collection of words spoken to date on the podcast. Please consider paying Brothers Music a visit if you're in the area, and give them an Instagram follow. Thank you to Kyle, and to everyone who tunes in.Cheers.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples contained within this episode. Sign Up for the Boston Listener Meet Up Joe Boyd was there when Dylan went electric, when Pink Floyd was born, and when Paul Simon brought Graceland to the world. But far from being just another music industry insider, Boyd has spent decades exploring how the world's musical traditions connect and transform each other. His new book And the Roots of Rhythm Remain, is seventeen years in the making, and is in Tyler's words “the most substantive, complete, thorough, and well-informed book on world music ever written.” From producing Albanian folk recordings to discovering the hidden links between Mississippi Delta blues and Indian classical music, Boyd's journey reveals how musical innovation often emerges when traditions collide. He joins Tyler to discuss why Zulu music became politically charged in South Africa, what makes Albanian choral music distinct from Bulgarian polyphony, what it was like producing Toots and the Maytals, his role in the famous "Dueling Banjos" scene in Deliverance, his work with Stanley Kubrick on A Clockwork Orange, his experiences with Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd, how he shaped R.E.M.'s sound on Fables of the Reconstruction, what really happened when Dylan went electric at Newport, how the Beatles integrated Indian music, what makes the Kinshasa guitar sound impossible to replicate, and how he maintains his collection of 6,000 vinyl LPs and 30,000 CDs, what he'll do next, and more. What's reggae without a little (a lot) of soul? We wouldn't know, because this week's episode has soul to spare!Toots and the Maytals were the people's champs of Jamaica; a sound whose roots represent the common man. Toots won a national song contest three separate times!Funky Kingston is a strange mish-mash of two previous albums, with a single thrown in for good measure. It's got a tried and true rock cover, some Americana adapted for Jamaica, and plenty of fantastic vibes. This record is a brilliant snapshot of a country in transition. Toots was able to dictate some of that cultural movement by churning out an album that continues to inspire today. Thanks for listening! The first-ever collection of Addicted To Noise founder and former Rolling Stone senior writer Michael Goldberg's photographs, Jukebox: Photographs 1967-2023 (Hozac Books), features an impressive array of underground figures and outcast luminaries captured in their natural habitat, most seen here for the first time anywhere. Bridging the gaps between the late ‘60s psychedelic era, primitive first-wave ‘70s punk and soul & reggae, as well as never-before seen images of country & folk iconoclasts and rule-breakers across the spectrum of all that is captivating, and even including some modern artists still making waves, Jukebox is a riveting photography collection that truly feels as good as it looks. The photos in JUKEBOX are drawn from the thousands he's taken over the years. Included are photos of the Sex Pistols, Crime, the Ramones, the Avengers, Devo, the Nuns, the Clash, Tom Verlaine, Lou Reed, John Cale and the Dils as well as Tom Waits, Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile, Janis Joplin, Ben Gibbard, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Muddy Waters, Toots and the Maytals, Patti Smith, Bettye LaVette, the Who, Neil Young, Jonathan Richman, Townes Van Zandt, the Flamin' Groovies, and many many more. Photos from JUKEBOX will be on display from July 25 through September 22, 2024 at the Haight Street Art Center in San Francisco, where the exhibition, We Are the One: San Francisco Punk 1970s & 1980s, curated by Goldberg, will also be featured during those two months. Oh, and bonus! We play the latest in a series of world famous O3L games, "Record Rack of the Mind." Proud members of the Pantheon Podcasts family. Learn more about your ad choices. It's been almost a year, and the time has come. In August of 2023, Ian was incorrect about something. More incorrect than we usually are about things on this podcast. And so, we attempt to set things right by giving ska its due. Our ska education starts with Al and the Vibrators' "Merry Christmas", followed by Toots and the Maytals' "Christmas Feeling Ska". The ranking music in this episode is "Polka Face" by Weird Al Yankovic. (For the record, Ian chose this.)

Vacation for the Imbalanced History team means 5 classic, never-before-repeated, episodes from 2021, through the month of July!!! When Markus and Ray first talked to Steve Hackett, he and his wife Jo were in Covid lockdown, early in the pandemic. The reality of Covid is part of the discussion, but we've edited the original discussion, for current purposes. Still, the story of how this amazing album, Under A Mediterranean Sky, came to be, comes through, as the guys and Steve dig into the music, and its sources. Here's a handy link to purchase any of the albums/videos we discuss via Hackettsongs.com! A couple notes: this episode was originally episode #107, and our sound quality then, isn't what it is these days. Begging your pardon, but the interview & music make it worth it! Week One of five, for Week two, next Monday: Do The Reggay with Toots & The Maytals!!! All episodes, any time on our web site! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The madness comes in for a landing with this, the tenth episode of Regarding Roger. Masters of Digression Chaz and Wolfie go all out in this drain-bamaged diversionary listen-through of the epic classic rock radio track Eclipse, the last track on Dark Side of the Moon. Redux follows suit, and thus we conclude the heavy lifting of season two, listening to Dark Side of The Moon Redux for the listener, so the listener doesn't have to. Join our hosts as they meander through Spotify rankings of Pink Floyd versus so many other artists we forget how many are covered. Chaz raves on and on about Live From Daryl's House, the internet show of Daryl Hall, and convinces Wolfie to get hooked in with Daryl and his friends like Smokey Robinson, Sammy Hagar, Allen Stone, Fitz and the Tantrums, Tommy Shaw, Rick Nielson, Kenny Loggins, CeeLo Greene, Darius Rucker, Train, Rob Thomas, Joe Walsh, Howard Jones, Chromeo, KT Tunstall, Ben Folds, Grace Potter, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Toots and the Maytals, Nick Lowe, the Bacon Brothers…and so many more. Wax nostalgic with Chaz about having Kyra Sedgwick walk across his blanket at a Bacon Brothers concert. Ah, the memories. And yes, we get back to listening to the redux version of Eclipse. We wrap up this listen season with comparisons to season one, what Lulu had going for it that Dark Side of the Moon Redux did not. If there had been more coverage, better press, more content, and greater context shared by the artist would it have been better received? If Roger hadn't tried to sing, if he hadn't added poetry and voiceovers, would it still be something you can listen to? The main question persists…why Roger, why? When the hosts start pining for the improvisational stylings of Metallica and Lou Reed, you know it's about time to wrap it up. Rather, the guys draw it out, going further out on a Rocket to Uranus than they ever have before. New heights in digressionary diversion and pointless nonsense, this episode really captures the essence of our final adjudication of Dark Side of the Moon Redux. Hearing Eclipse delivered with a James Hetfield staccato is worth the price of admission alone. We wrap it up with a bow – here's the message: life ain't all dark. That's the big epiphany of this album – that and we've determined that the answer to life, the universe and everything really is 42. Thanks, Roger, here's your towel. Now…what would Daryl do? Roger – listen to Daryl, he is the king of Redux. Find out for yourself – tune in at Live From Daryl's House.

There are some pop movies that capture the appeal of an entire genre. Such was the case with Perry Henzell's The Harder They Come, a crime drama that was such a hit it essentially popularised reggae in the United States. Such things are possible only with a star of the calibre of Jimmy Cliff, plus soundtrack and screen appearances from the likes of Toots and the Maytals and Prince Buster. This week, Aidan rejoins Graham to talk about Henzell's film, and uncover the reason why he might be the ultimate Pop Screen director. We also talk about Chris Blackwell's Island Records, whose film division was launched by this very movie. There's also discussion of the film's real-life inspiration, the "original rude boy" Ivanhoe Martin, its possible subtexts and the white-knuckle experience of watching that bus swerving all over the place during the opening credits. If you want to keep us from plying our trade as door-to-door gardeners, you can donate to our Patreon and get a monthly bonus episode of this show, plus two exclusive podcasts not available anywhere else - From the Video Aisle, which is currently working its way through the Mr. Vampire series, and the completely unclassifiable Last Night... Reggae #music is one of Jamaica's most distinctive and influential cultural exports. It emerged in the late #1960s as a fusion of ska, rocksteady, and Rastafarianism, and soon became a global phenomenon that inspired countless artists and genres. Some of the greatest reggae hits from the past are songs that reflect the social, political, and spiritual realities of #Jamaica, as well as the joy and resilience of its people. These songs include Bob #Marley's "One Love", which is a universal anthem of peace and unity; #Jimmy Cliff's "The Harder They Come", which is a defiant statement of survival and resistance; Burning Spear's "Marcus Garvey", which is a tribute to the national hero and pan-Africanist leader; and Toots and the Maytals' "Sweet and Dandy", which is a celebration of rural life and culture. These songs and many others have shaped the history and identity of Jamaica, and have influenced generations of musicians and listeners around the world.

Sean Barrette is an author who has since written a book "Heartstrings - First Guitars" Heartstrings – First Guitars, is a collection of memories from a variety of musicians, famous, semi-famous, up and coming, anonymous, or otherwise, about the guitar they learned on, the first guitar they bought with their own money, the first “good” guitar they owned, or the beloved first-line guitar that accompanied them on first songs, first shows, first tours, or first recordings. These short, narrative pieces, tied together with first-time author Sean Barrette's memories of a life and career spent immersed in music, tell a story that demonstrates that, no matter the guitar player, they all have this first guitar story and love to tell it. It's the thread that ties all guitar players together, but these stories also provide insight into the very beginnings of many of the musical artists we love. It may even provide insight into the guitar player who lives with you. Or encourage someone to pick up a guitar and get playing themselves. With first guitar stories by: Gordon Lightfoot, Bruce Cockburn, David Knopfler, Colin Linden (Blackie & the Rodeo Kings), Johnny Hickman (Cracker), Rob Baker (Tragically Hip), Paul Langlois (Tragically Hip), Gord Sinclair (Tragically Hip), Tom Wilson (Blackie & the Rodeo Kings), Kevn Kinney (Drivin & Cryin), Liona Boyd, Leeroy Stagger, Moe Berg and Kris Abbott (The Pursuit of Happiness), Blair Packham (The Jitters), Rik Emmett (Triumph), Finny McConnell (The Mahones), Ron Hawkins (Lowest of the Low), Dave Genn (54-40), Skye Wallace, Alun Piggins, Mark Stuart, Stacey Earle, Chris and Eleanor Masterson (The Mastersons), Preston and Alan Glass, Barney Bentall, Sean Kelly (Crash Kelly), Mr. Zero (The Kings), Jaimee Harris, Andrew Hyatt, Terry Draper (Klaatu), Dan “Chewy” Mongrain (Voi Vod), Sal Costa (My Darkest Days, Bonds of Mara), Michael Mckenzie (Lowest of the Low), François Lamoureux, Jordon Zadorozny (Blinker the Star), Ed Ringwald (Gordon Lightfoot), Joel Plaskett, Neil Osborne (54-40), Carl Harvey (Toots & the Maytals), Don Ross, Mike Turner (Our Lady Peace), Darrell Scott, Stephen Fearing (Blackie & the Rodeo Kings), Ethan Ives (Car Seat Headrest), Jeffrey Trott (Sheryl Crow), Julian Taylor, David Pulkingham, Brian Howes (DDT), Gary Lee Connor (Screaming Trees), Johnette Napolitano (Concrete Blonde), Pete Yorn, Gordie Johnson (Big Sugar), David Baerwald, Pete Droge and Elaine Summers (The Sinners), Serena Ryder, Myles Zuniga (Fastball), Jim Cuddy (Blue Rodeo), Hayes Carll, Stuart Cameron (Crash Test Dummies), Myles Goodwin (April Wine), Brian and Bruce Good (The Good Brothers), Adrian Eccleston (Drake, The Weeknd), and many more. We also chat about Elvis impersonators, call BS on broken bones, and do a deep dive into all things leather jackets. Well, actually we spend a little more time focusing on leather zipper masks if that gives you a hard four. Then at (1:12:00) the pressure drops when we cover The Harder They Come soundtrack, starring Jimmy Cliff. We discussed how this album paved the way for the popularity of reggae music in the United States, Toots and the Maytals on SNL, and the best titular tracks from movie soundtrack albums. Today's episode was sure to test your loyalty, but if you feel the love you should join us next week when we become the best Kendrick Lamar podcast, and discuss his Pulitzer Prize winning album, Damn.

This is part one of a two-part focus on Reggae music. The heart of Reggae music has always been politics and spirituality. In this two part episode, you'll learn about some of the musical and political forces in Jamaica's colorful past that all contributed to the music that we celebrate as reggae today. From Marcus Garvey, the modern-day prophet who had a vision for the black people living in the new world, and Ethiopia's Emperor Hailie Salassie, whose formal title included "Lord of Lord, King of Kings, and Conquering Lion of Judah", and claimed to be a direct descendant of King Solomon and the Queen of Shebah, to great early reggae musicians like Derrick Morgan, and Desmond Dekker, to the firey Peter Tosh, and the brilliant reggae, who brought reggae to the rest of the world, Bob Marley - they're all here and you'll learn their stories, hear their music, and understand the major forces that fused to create a brand new genre. In this latest episode of American Song, you'll see how a tiny Spanish colony developed to become Jamaica as we know it today, and how Reggae was instrumental in helping Jamaican culture 'conquer the world'!In This EpisodePaul Simon - Mother and Child ReunionThe Flying Lizards - Money (That's What I Want)Bob Marley - Redemption SongBob Marley and the Walers - 400 YearsBurning Spear - Slavery DaysSly Mongoose - Count LasherThe Folkes Brothers - Oh CarolinaToots and the Maytals - 54-46 Was My NumberMarcus Garvey (Political Speech)Derek Morgan - Forward MarchErnest Ranglin - Below the BasslineDerrick Morgan - Tougher than Though (Rudie's in Court)Desmond Dekker - 007 ShantytownDesmond Dekker - IsraelitesStephen Marley (with Ziggy Marley) - Selassie is the ChapelPeter Tosh - Let Jah be PraisedCulture - BeholdSonjah Stanley - (Academic discussion)Third World - 96 Degrees in the ShadePeter Tosh - AfricanThe Skatalites - The Guns of NavarroneMutabaruka - (Jamaican Poet; Dis Poem)Bob Marley and the Wailers - No Woman, No CryPeter Tosh - Steppin' RazorBurning Spear - LionContinue the experience online:Visit the American Song Podcast facebook page.

In 1972, director Perry Henzell set a gritty crime thriller in Jamaica's exploding, politically charged music scene, and came up with THE HARDER THEY COME—the cult-movie spark that started reggae music's slow burn around the world.Host Rico Gagliano tells the story of a film and a soundtrack that inspired rebels and rockers from the Clash to Willie Nelson. Guests include Henzell's daughter Justine, UK music writer Lloyd Bradley, and Paul Douglas—drummer and bandleader of reggae legends The Maytals. The third season of the MUBI Podcast, titled “Needle on the Record,” dives into the unifying power of movie music and tells the stories behind some of cinema's most renowned “needle drops”—moments where filmmakers deployed pre-existing music instead of an original score. Each episode explores an iconic marriage of song and image that's become part of pop culture. Toots Hibbert was a titan of Jamaican popular music. With his harmony group the Maytals he indelibly changed the island's music scene in the early 1960s by infusing ska with gospel and went on to captivate overseas audiences by blending blues and funk with reggae, becoming one of Jamaica's best-known performers. Never Grow Old: A Salute To Toots And The Maytals is an homage to Toots, whose incredible career only ended when he tragically died of Covid-19 in September 2020, aged 77. On this show, producer David Katz will trace his evolution, using select archive interviews with the man. APWW #861
