“Stories of an Alternative Reality: The Parable of the Two Debtors”
Fr. Andrew Iskander- Homily for the 4th Sunday of Thout. A reflection on the parable of the unforgiving servant. Click the icon below to listen.
In this sermon, Pastor Kevin walks through Luke 7:36–50. Jesus contrasts the cold self-righteousness of Simon with the extravagant love of the forgiven woman to show that those who know they've been forgiven much will love much. In the words of John Newton, the gospel makes us "happy debtors" who live in gospel-motivated love, rest in the full forgiveness Christ gives weary sinners, and humble ourselves before Him rather than standing in self-righteous judgment of others. True Christian life flows not from duty alone but from the joy of being forgiven and the freedom of loving Christ in return.
It can be hard to admit you need some help. We live in a world that celebrates strength, independence and being the master of one's own destiny. In the words of the song made famous by Frank Sinatra, “I did it my way,” plays out at funerals almost as an anthem of defiance. Sticking it to The Man.But what if, rather than seeing the need for help in life as a sign of weakness, we saw it as a life-transforming gift to be received and responded to with unrestrained love.A message by David Toscano

Simon, a Pharisee, invites Jesus over for dinner. A sinful woman with a bad reputation arrives, lavishing Jesus with ointment and tears, and honoring Him. Simon is disgusted by this- but Jesus explains the experience of grace leads to love. She has been forgiven much, therefore she loves much. Simon, though, is self-righteous and doesn't think he needs forgiveness- and therefore misses out on a relationship with God.Application Questions: 1. In what ways do you see your own heart like Simon's?2. How does judgmentalism show up in your life? How does the gospel kill it?3. What does the woman teach you about how to have a relationship with Jesus?4. Do you see the depth of your need for forgiveness? Do you see the greatness of Christ's love and sacrifice for you?5. How can you worship Christ this week like the woman?
This week, Kristina Wenger and Elissa Bjeletich discuss The Parable of the Two Debtors, from Luke 7: 36-50. What is Jesus trying to teach us about forgiveness?

Perhaps one of the best measuring tools with which we can measure our discipleship is how much we love our Savior and how grateful we are for his redemption.

During the season of Lent, we've been reading through the Gospel of Luke (and preaching on stories/events unique to Luke). For the last two weeks, we've heard Jesus speaking in parables. Through them, He's been teaching about the danger of self-righteousness (Parable of the Two Debtors) and the importance of serving others - especially those different than you (The Good Samaritan). But, as a hearer of Jesus, you might ask Him: "Why?" Why should I do those things? What difference will it make in the end?In today's sermon, Pastor Kevin preaches on another parable of Jesus': The Rich Man and Lazarus. In this parable - Jesus gives us the "long view" of our day to day living and answers the "why" question. As you listen, consider for yourself: "Where are you heading?" May you discover the confidence that Jesus gives us for our destination, through His Word.

Presented at Curwensville Alliance on 3/9/25 by Pastor Steve Shields. Listen as Pastor Steve takes us through the Parable in Luke 7 about the two debtors. Let's set the scene for the lesson. Jesus is a guest of a religious professional. It is all a set up, put into place to trap Jesus. A woman with a bad reputation arrives. She heard Jesus teach on grace at some point, and she has a heart of gratitude for that grace. However, the self righteous Pharisee just doesn't get it. What can we learn from this lesson from Jesus? A need is a need regardless of the size. The amount is irrelevant since both are unable to pay. How can we develop a thankful heart? Find the effective way to deal with your guilt. Take your heart to the cross. Give your heart into Christ's hands. Find ways to honor Christ for what He has done for you. The love you act out doesn't cause you to be forgiven. Rather, it is evidence that you've been forgiven. Cling to the forgiveness you have received. Forgiveness is not a matter of what you feel. It is a matter of who you trust.

What if Jesus could read your thoughts about other people's sins? And what about your own sins? Do you have shameful secrets that seem too awful to even confess? In this episode, we're going to consider a story Jesus told at a dinner party where someone was comparing sin. It's a story that exposes our false narratives about sin, and invites us into a beautiful story of forgiveness.Tasha is an author, speaker, Bible teacher, and the host of the “Digging In with Tasha Calvert” weekly podcast.Guest: Tasha CalvertBible Passage: Story of the Two Debtors in Luke 7:36-50 CSBTeen Comparison Quizzes: ComparisonGirl.comMentioned Resources: Digging In Podcast with Tasha CalvertPrestonwood Women - studies and Bible teaching that Prestonwood makes available upon request.Prestonwood Women - resources on Youtube and Right Now MediaComparison Girl for Teens: Thriving Beyond Measure in a World That Compares by Lee Nienhuis and Shannon PopkinWorship the King by Chris TiegreenThe Gospel Primer by Milton VincentTranscript: Available hereMusic: Cade PopkinResound Media: Go to www.ResoundMedia.cc for more Gospel centered resources.Connect with Tasha:Website: tashacalvert.comInstagram: tistashcalvertPodcast: Digging In with Tasha CalvertShaped by God's Promises: Lessons from Sarah on Fear and Faith {buy now}Comparison Girl for Teens {buy now} Get our free "Pray God's Promises" prayer guide. Jesus tells a story at a dinner party that changes the whole mood of the night. This story highlights our view of God's love and forgiveness in a way that changes the whole perspective of our lives.
Grace leads to gratitude
Two people find themselves in the same room with Jesus: Simon, an intellectual and a religious man, and a woman, who we are told lived “a sinful life.” What happens with them? Why does one of them remain cool and detached, while the other one sees their life transformed and changed? In the parable of the two debtors, we see what happens when people come to Jesus with two different conditions, and how Jesus responds to each of them. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on August 16, 2008. Series: The Parables of Jesus (1992). Scripture: Luke 7:36-50. Today's podcast is brought to you by Gospel in Life, the site for all sermons, books, study guides and resources from Timothy Keller and Redeemer Presbyterian Church.
