While studying music at Belmont University in Nashville, she released her EP Stories Told. Ritter then cut her teeth on the cruise ship circuit, releasing her debut album, Coffee Every Morning in 2018.After winning NashFM 105.5's regional Nash Next competition, she represented the Florida Panhandle in the finals, beating out over 800 contestants to be named the 2018 Nash Next winner. She gained national recognition and a record deal with Big Machine (home to heavy-hitters like Taylor Swift and Florida Georgia Line) making her label debut in May 2019 with the single "Nothing But You.” She then swept the 2019 Northwest Florida Beachcomber awards taking home eight titles including: Musician of the Year, Album of the Year, Best Original Song, Best Country Artist, Best Singer/Songwriter, Best Solo Artist, Best New Artist, and Best Female Vocalist. He also just happens to be the son of a country music legend, a combat veteran, any Army helicopter and fixed wing pilot, a firefighter, a civil servant, a computer engineer, a musician, a small business owner, comic book collector, board game nerd, rodeo lover, horse lover, a whiskey drinker and a pretty darn good guy....oh and he some how finds time to be a father and husband.John has been a part of the music business for years and only recently decided to jump back in after some encouragement from friends in the music industry. John started out working for his dad every summer as a kid. Working his way up from roadie to road manager. He played in a few different bands for fun while pursuing his other interests outside music like finishing his Bachelors of Science in Computer Information Systems and his Masters in Military Strategy and Diplomacy. To top it all off he is married to his wife Samantha,a combat veteran, and together they are raising three wonderful girls. Flying planes and helicopters, working with computers at IBM and raising a family just wasn't enough for him though, he missed the road and music.

Season 1, Episode 18: Will Carpenter / Ships Have Sailed Dan Sterenchuk and Tommy Estlund are honored to have as our guest, Will Carpenter from the band, Ships Have Sailed. Since their inception, Ships Have Sailed have always struck a balance between exuberant pop and substantial alternative rock. Their debut EP ‘Someday' (2014) was well received throughout the US, Canada and the UK, catalyzing a Northeastern US tour and landing the band showcases at SXSW, CMJ Music Marathon, Canadian Music Week, & NAMM in 2015. They took home accolades from ISC and Unsigned Only that same year, furthering the band's impetus for the release of their first full length album, ‘Moodswings'. The eleven song studio effort earned glowing reviews from Blackbook, Wild Honey Pie, and The 405, again receiving notice from ISC, Unsigned Only and The John Lennon Songwriting Competition, and spawned a sister release ‘Re: MIX', whose tropical house remixes seemed in perfect step with the evolving music climate. An invigorated 2016 began with Ships Have Sailed's acoustic EP, ‘Whispers'. The band spent the summer touring the West coast and set out on an East coast tour in late fall. In November, ‘Drive' received Best Alternative Song at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards, a massive feat and a testament to the group's ability to translate their own momentum into a pulsing, universal anthem about love, longevity and forward motion. Along with the success and progress achieved over the past year, for which they have been unwaveringly grateful, Ships Have Sailed also saw the inherent challenges of unexpected events and unpredictable variables of their continuing journey. Coming off the road on the final leg of their 2016 tour cycle, and in a particularly reflective and somewhat exhausted moment, a new idea was born. In his own words, the group's spearhead, songwriter and producer, Will Carpenter says “[In] a moment that was both happy and sad, reflective and hopeful, satisfied but still hungry, I tried to muster up the words to convey the mix of emotions that this year had evoked. At first it was a thoughtful process, but once the grain of the idea took shape, the music just kind of poured out…and it was incredibly cathartic.” The result will be heard in the band's new single, ‘Up', which Carpenter sees as a call “to those of us with a dream that, however long the odds, is something we're willing to fight for.” ‘Up' was released on February 3, 2017 and is available everywhere digital music is sold or streamed. On this week’s episode of SMI Radio, I catch up with Unsigned Only’s Ben Short to gain more insight to how UO works, how it got started, and the unique opportunity that it offers unsigned, emerging artists. You will also hear some tracks from past UO winners, Lara Johnston and Laura Steel. UO is still accepting song entries. Contestants interested in submitting songs for the competition can do so here. Specific days and runtimes of this week’s episode are available by scrolling down… In the second half of the show, Tacoma native Vicci Martinez is back on SMI Radio. Vicci dials in from the road, as she makes her way back to to the Northwest to play several dates, which include a show in Bellingham on Thursday, May 14 and a special St. Patty’s Day show on Sunday, March 17 at her old stomping grounds, Jazzbones in Tacoma. Tickets for that show are available here. Vicci is also in town to make her first video, which will include several friends and associates as extras. She’ll drop some hints on the concept of the video. Her single, Come Along, which she recorded with Cee Lo Green, has gotten a second life, thanks to her constant touring and radio airplay. You can get it on iTunes, Amazon.com and Bandcamp. Although Vicci has been spending the last couple years in LA, based on our conversation, her heart still remains in the Northwest.
