We had the pleasure of interviewing Haley Smalls over Zoom video! Toronto based singer-songwriter Haley Smalls recently release her latest single “Do Better . This single release follows a string of consistent singles over the last year from Haley, including Run-DMC influence track “Bass” that premiered with Hip-HopVibe & Rolling Out, as well asSummer 2021 buzz track “I Do.”. Haley's single “Do Better” is the build up to her currently untitled 5th project set for release in 2022. Lyrically, the core of the project centers around love: love of self, love of others, and the love of success and the money it brings. While the style of the project is rooted in R&B/Hip Hop don't be surprised to hear a country or rock influence come through as Haley works to make her sound uniquely diverse creating something that can be received by all, no matter their background or their age. Now, after inking a deal with industry veterans Jimmy Maynes & JoJo Brim at V Nation, along with her long-time management team from Ludacris' Ebony Son Mgt and music producers Poke and Tone from Trackmasters, Haley Smalls finally has the right team in place to release her next project in 2022. Haley started her musical journey at a young age when her parents recognized her unique talents and signed her up for singing lessons. Haley started booking studio time at age twelve, writing songs and working with producers in the U.S. and the UK. After years of grinding, it all came to fruition when she met her producer in 2013, the Grammy nominated multi-Platinum Megaman. Her 2015 debut This Is Me was a culmination of Haley coming into her own and shaping her identity. Following This Is Me Haley released a series of noteworthy projects, including 2017's Heart of Gold, 2018's The Cure II, and 2019's Summer Nights. She continued her momentum through 2020, releasing a series of tracks well into 2021. This next phase for Haley Smalls is unstoppable now that she finally has the right team around her, following her recent signing to V Nation. I've heard their music all my life.I Want Your Love is a song that comes from Chic's studio album C'est Chic (1978).Good Times is a song from their third album Risqué (1979).When I hear the music of Chic, it makes me think about dancing and the days when everybody was roller skating or at the club.The song I Want Your Love reached number one on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart in 1978 and number five on the R&B/Hip Hop songs chart in 1979. It also peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1979 and remained on the chart for 19 weeks.Good Times reached #3 on the disco chart. It reportedly sold more than 5 million copies, making it, at the time, the best selling 45 rpm single in the history of Atlantic Records. This Episode 57 was so great, so entertaining. We had an all-star panel of female DJs from all over the world. These beautiful ladies have all different experiences. Some have toured Europe, some have toured the Caribbean, some have made their name in the midst of the pandemic. All however are passionate about the art of Deejaying. We spoke about the challenges of being a woman in the industry to the sleep schedules of a DJ in demand. DJ BB Bad came with the dance moves while DJ Soca B played an uptempo mix. Together they had all of us moving. DJ Renee shared her experiences playing and living in Dubai. DJ Queen dropped gem after gem giving us timely motivation. DJ Chocolate Rocket showed us her dedication by sharing her experiences while actually being on location Deejaying at a night club. A truly remarkable Reggae Star Ian Sweetness & Dancehall Queen Junie Ranks. Junie Ranks, the only female dee-jay with "Ranks" behind her name, not to be mistaken for Lady Junie. Many fans often think that they are one and the same but they are not. Lady Junie has now changed her name to Junie Platinum. At a young age Junie Ranks fell head over heels in love with the dee-jaying fraternity of the reggae music industry and made constant strides to becoming better and better. Junie grew up listening to artists such as, Lady Ann, Sister Nancy, Jackie Statement, Sister Verna and Mama Liza.Junie did other tracks such as Big and Ready, Dibby Dibby Man, Naw Stop Ge Bun, Sweetest Girl a combination with Wayne Wonder, Lick Out 'Gainst De Man Dem and Sea of Love featuring John Mouse which went to number one in Canada in 1990, and give her the Female D.J. of the Year title in that country. She did tracks like Entertainer Party, Dream of Me with Jimmy London and the list goes on. Ian Sweetness is one of reggae music's current honey flavored singers. Ian Sweetness skillfully balances R&B/Hip Hop/soul with a lovers reggae groove.
The one-time president for the New York City branch of the radical black nationalist National People's Democratic Uhuru Movement, M-1 caused some controversy in the underground rap scene as a part of the critically acclaimed and ostensibly socialist Dead Prez twosome. While he and Stic.man were in between labels, each ventured out with his own solo project. M-1 was inspired to put together a solo album in part by doing production work for other artists, including Mississippi rapper David Banner, but also from collaborating with Italian jazz guitarist Fabrizio Sotti (who produced most of jazz diva Cassandra Wilson's 2003 Glamoured album). In March 2006, M-1 released the Confidential LP as a CD/DVD combination, with contributions from Ghostface Killah, Q-Tip, and Cassandra Wilson herself. The first single, "'Til We Get There," did fall below the radar of mainstream airplay, but not before the album reached the number 23 spot on the independent chart and 52 on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart. M-1, aka Mutulu Olugabala is an African rapper, activist and author known for his work as one half of the political hip hop duo Dead Prez along with his life long friend Stic.man aka Clayton Gavin. His choice of the name "M-1" is likely a reference to the semi-automatic rifle. The M1 Garand rifle is notable as the mainstay of American infantry in WWII, and Malcolm X held the M1 carbine variation in a famous photo printed in Life magazine in 1964. M-1's first solo album Confidential was released on March 21, 2006 through Sotti/Koch Records. Following Confidential M-1 worked on the album Can't Sell Dope Forever by Dead Prez/Outlawz. M-1 is also featured in the UK documentary, Guilty or Innocent of Using the N Word. He can also be seen acting in Chappelle's Show comedy sketches.
