Google, in partnership with Enterprise Ireland (EI) and the Local Enterprise Offices (LEO), has today announced Lahinch Surf Shop as the overall winner of this year's You're the Business competition. Situated on the picturesque prom in Lahinch Co Clare, the family-founded business was selected for its innovative use of digital tools to grow and evolve its operations. As the top winner, Lahinch Surf Shop will receive a truly unique prize: a custom AI-powered advertising campaign developed by Google AI in collaboration with a team of AI experts. You're the Business programme In addition to the overall winner, 23 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from across Ireland, spanning a range of industries from print studios and food producers to bespoke cabinet makers have been awarded an exclusive, money-can't-buy prize as part of the You're the Business campaign. Those selected will receive a digital support package from Google which includes a one-year Google Workspace Business subscription with access to AI-powered tools like Gemini Advanced and NotebookLM and a one-to-one consultation from Google experts on how to get the best out of Google Workspace. Winners will also receive a You're the Business trophy and digital assets and are invited to attend a dedicated Winners event in Google's EMEA HQ in Dublin. Speaking about the competition Eileesh Buckley, co-owner of Lahinch Surf Shop in Clare said: "It's an incredible honour to be recognised as part of the You're the Business campaign. At Lahinch Surf Shop, we've always believed in leveraging the power of digital tools to connect with our customers in meaningful ways. Being selected for this bespoke AI-powered advertising campaign is an exciting step forward, and we're really looking forward to working with Google's team to take our digital presence to the next level." Cera Ward, Managing Director, Large Customer Solutions, Google Ireland said: "SMEs comprise 90% of all enterprises in Ireland. Businesses like Lahinch Surf Shop and all those we are celebrating today are an integral part of the economy generating employment and providing services across the country. Through You're the Business we want to help founders leverage a range of digital tools, including AI, to help them reach their growth potential. We've been proud to partner with Enterprise Ireland and the Local Enterprise Offices in the delivery of the programme and I want to congratulate all the winners announced today." Delivered by Google in partnership with Enterprise Ireland and the Local Enterprise Office, You're the Business is an online platform offering digital training and tools to businesses in Ireland free of charge. Now in its third year, the initiative has taken on a new AI-focus with the online platform offering new training modules where users can explore AI tools and learn how AI can help them prepare for the future. The competition element rewards businesses that have demonstrated a commitment to digital at different stages of their journey. Entrants were asked to submit a written entry telling their story around how they've utilised or enhanced digital skills in order to help their business grow or succeed online. Kieran Comerford, Chair of the Local Enterprise Offices, said; "The role of digital in the evolution and growth of any SME has never been so keenly felt than over the past number of years. Giving them access to Google's in-depth expertise through the You're the Business programme is a fantastic step to help these companies maximise their online presence. This programme along with the suite of online supports through the Local Enterprise Offices and Enterprise Ireland to help businesses digitise, is helping give them a competitive advantage both here and internationally. Congratulations to all the winners today and we look forward to continuing to support them as they grow over the coming years." The race for industry recognition is on at Nor-Shipping 2025, with today's launch of the prestigious Next Generation Ship and Ocean Solutions Awards. Nor-Shipping 2025 plans to gather industry leaders from across the globe to debate methods, share knowledge, showcase innovation, and build the necessary relationships to navigate toward a future of sustainable success. The accolades support the exhibition and event week's main theme of #future-proof, as leading global innovators compete against one another to showcase truly defining projects and solutions. Both awards, which hold extra significance coming in Nor-Shipping's 60th anniversary year, will be judged by expert panels, with Remi Erikson, Group President and CEO, DNV, leading deliberations for the Next Generation Ship jury, and Kjerstin Braathen, Group CEO, DNB, taking charge for the Ocean Solutions Award. The Ocean Solutions Award focuses on trailblazing ideas, products, and concepts conceived to address some of the most pressing challenges facing the maritime and ocean industries. The Next Generation Ship Award assesses breakthrough newbuild, retrofit and conversion projects, with all ship types given equal consideration, regardless of size or segment. 'Your time to shine' The Next Generation Ship Award winner will be revealed at the Nor-Shipping Opening Ceremony at Oslo City Hall in Norway on 2 June, while the Ocean Solutions Award will be handed out at Nor-Shipping's Ocean Leadership Conference the following day. "All eyes will be on Norway next June and, as ever, our winners will have a unique opportunity to showcase their ambition, dedication and innovation to a global audience of key decision-makers," said Sidsel Norvik, Director of Nor-Shipping. "As befits our anniversary, next time promises to be our biggest and best Nor-Shipping yet, so I think that elevates attention levels to a new high. Ambitious businesses take note… this is your time to shine, demonstrating how your projects and solutions are capable of helping steer our industry towards bright, prosperous and sustainable horizons. We wish everyone the very best of luck." Addressing challenges, identifying opportunities The Next Generation Ship Award assesses breakthrough newbuild, retrofit and conversion projects, with all ship types given equal consideration, regardless of size or segment. Entrants will have to impress an international jury across key criteria of energy efficiency, innovation, suitability and flexibility, technology utilisation, safety and security, and environmental sustainability. The lucky winner will join past title holders including Terntank, 2023's winner for its 15,000dwt Hybrid Tanker newbuild series, and Havila Voyages, which secured the 2022 accolade for coastal cruise ferry Havila Capella. The Ocean Solutions Award, meanwhile, shifts the focus to trailblazing ideas, products, and concepts conceived to address some of the most pressing challenges facing the maritime and ocean industries. Entrants, who should be participants at Nor-Shipping 2025, must prove their solutions are either currently available or near commercialisation to ensure industry impact. AlfaWall Oceanbird won in 2023 for its folding wing sail system, with the first retrofit due to take place early next year onboard Wallenius Wilhelmsen's vessel Tirranna. Agenda setting "Nor-Shipping has always worked to provide a platform for the ideas and organisations which help to set the ocean business agenda, and our awards are an integral part of that mission," notes Norvik. "We want to showcase how the most innovative approaches can turn challenges into opportunities, recognising and rewarding the players pushing boundaries to deliver unique commercial and environmental benefits. It'll be exciting to see who is competing to #future-proof our industry, and scoop these coveted awards, in 2025." Nor-Shipping takes place at venues across Oslo and Lillestrøm 2-6 June 2025. Only two weeks left for third-level students to apply for EirGrid's CleanerGrid Competition

Time is running out for third-level students across Ireland to showcase their vision for the future of the country's energy sector. Students are invited to apply for the EirGrid CleanerGrid Competition 2024, with applications due to close on Thursday 31st October. Now in its second year, the CleanerGrid competition, run by EirGrid, the operator and developer of Ireland's electricity grid, aims to foster innovation and creativity by encouraging students to showcase their skills in solving critical energy challenges, with a focus on sustainability, efficiency and clean energy technologies. With a top prize of €12,000 (€6,000 for the winning student team and €6,000 for the student's third-level institute), this year's theme asks students to "Present your vision of what the growing energy sector will need to look like in 2050 to have sustainably achieved net-zero emissions". Entrants should show how the grid will need to change to allow for more renewable sources and less synchronous generation; including what government policies will need to be in place, how the economy will be affected, how the grid will need to adapt, how technology can help achieve this goal, or any other relevant points they identify in order to create a resilient energy system for the future. Jack Brady was a member of the winning team for the 2023/24 CleanerGrid Competition and has now joined the EirGrid Graduate Programme. He encourages students from all disciplines to enter the competition. "The CleanerGrid competition with EirGrid is a great opportunity to take the skills you learn in college and apply them to a real-world problem. It is not just about the theory; you need to look at the practical aspects of your idea and how they would be applied. This is not exclusive to engineering students, we need to hear how the electricity system can be future proofed from a range of perspectives. "The competition gave me an insight into renewable energy and the grid, which I would not have had otherwise, and it inspired me to then apply for EirGrid's Graduate Programme following my graduation from TU Dublin. I would encourage anyone with an interest in sustainability, energy, renewables or just solving big world challenges to apply for the competition for the chance to showcase your abilities, and potentially kick-start your career." The competition is open to undergraduate and postgraduate students, below PhD level, from all disciplines at any third-level institution in the Republic of Ireland. Students can take part by signing up at EirGrid.ie/CleanerGrid as part of a team of up to six members. Applications close on the 31st October. The top entrants will be invited to EirGrid's head offices to present their innovations to industry experts including members of the EirGrid senior management team. A speech therapist said research which found too many children are starting school unable to speak coherently highlights how difficult it is for parents to access support. Research released from the Education Review Office shows teachers are seeing more new entrants starting school who are only able to speak in sentences of about four or five words. Teachers say Covid-19 and excessive screen time are to blame, but speech therapists say a lack of help is the real problem, Melanie Earley reports.

Dogs Are Smarter Than People: Writing Life, Marriage and Motivation

There are some things in the writing world that don't make a ton of sense in the world of regular humans. One of those things is pinch points. This podcast episode is going to be the start of a quick series of podcasts and regular posts about pinch points. The regular posts will be at our Substack LIVING HAPPY under the WRITE BETTER NOW publication. So, what are these little twerps called pinch points? They a way of thinking about novel or story structure that helps us keep the reader engaged. Pinch points are moments where the tension emerges again or is heightened. It's a place where you seductively say to the reader, “Hey, baby. Let's engage again.” Or maybe it's that they are saying, “Dear Reader, let me remind you what exactly is at stake here for our poor, dear, pathetic hero.” The pinch points are where the protagonist or hero of your story gets a little bit of pain. Ouch. So mean, us writers are so very mean. As Writing Mastery describes, “They rekindle the tension that may have waned by reminding us of the primary conflict and what it means for the characters. Without stakes, readers will quickly lose interest—therefore, pinch points are events of the plot that, strategically placed, keep the narrative from losing steam.” “In the traditional Three-Act Structure, the first act introduces the characters, setting, and conflict, while the third act culminates in the resolution. The second act, which constitutes the middle portion of the story, is often the longest and contains the rising action. Pinch points punctuate this act to create a sense of urgency and drive the story forward.” Pinch Points Are Not Plot Points So, here's the super important thing. Pinch points are not plot points. Yes, there is a lot of P-words in there, but to pinch is not to plot, though a dastardly villain might plot how to pinch. Plot points move the story forward are events connect the events of your story so it's not episodic. Pinch points Raise stakes or increase the conflict. Obstruct the hero from getting her goal, so often focus on the bad guy of the story or the antagonist and this is a big part of it, this is what makes it not a turning point Make the reader curious about what might happen, make them worried about what might happen, so keeps them reading Show us what our heroes are made of because of the extra pressure that these challenges create. As Writers Helping Writers writes, “New writers often concentrate on the Hook, Midpoint, and the big twist at the end. But without well-placed Pinch Points, the story will lose its sense of rising action, conflict, and tension. The quest cannot exist without an opponent, and the Pinch Points show the reader what that opposition is all about. “Pinch Points show how high the stakes are. They also set up the emotional change within the hero as they react to the new situation.” So, tomorrow on the blog, I'll be talking about where these babies go in your story. DOG TIP FOR LIFE Do not let the pinch points keep you from moving forward toward your goals. COOL EXERCISE Think about the bad guy in your story. Now write down: Their fetish What they'd buy at the grocery store What they'd buy at Wal-Mart What they could do to make things harder on the hero and easier on themselves PLACE TO SUBMIT River Styx The Castro Prize, named for our founding editor, Michael Castro, is a new prize awarded annually to exemplary works of poetry and fiction. River Styx editors carefully read and discuss contest entries and ultimately submit the strongest ten entries to the judges. For our 2024 contest, Christopher Castellani will judge fiction and Dg Okpik will judge poetry. We will award one winner for fiction and one for poetry, with one runner-up in each genre. The first-place prizes are $1000 each, plus publication in print and online. The entry fee is $20. Works of fiction should not exceed 5000 words. You may send up to three poems. Work must be previously unpublished. You may submit multiple entries but each work must be submitted separately. If the work is a simultaneous submission, we ask that you notify us immediately upon publication elsewhere and withdraw the piece via Submittable. Withdrawing a submission will not result in a refund of the entry fee. The contest runs from May 1, 2024 through September 30, 2024. The winners will be announced on January 1, 2025. All contest entries are read blind. The winner is chosen based on the strength and inventiveness of the writing, not on academic background, publication history, or any other accolades. Please do not include your name or any other identifying information on the work itself.
