It's election season in the US, the time when we citizens exercise our rights—rights that were hard-won by warriors on the field of battle, and which have been fought for and maintained through the valor and sacrifice of more warriors on more battlefields. And like our rights, those battles have come with a cost. For many warriors, the cost has been Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSd). Of course, PTSd is not limited to veterans, however. It can come from any life-threatening event, and it is accompanied by physical effects on the body and brain. The stark reality is that 7-8% of people will experience PTSd at some point in their lives. This means that we as Christians need to learn what the Bible says about it, and how to find hope and healing in the midst of it. To guide us toward a biblical perspective on PTSd is former USMC Infantry Officer Jeremy Stalnecker. Jeremy is the Executive Director of the Mighty Oaks Foundation, dedicated to helping America's military warriors and their families who are suffering from the unseen wounds of combat such as PTSd. He is an Iraq War veteran, former pastor, public speaker, husband to Susanne and father of four. Today he "works to reach the hurting and provide the healing found in Christ." Welcome back! On this episode of the Cameron-Brooks podcast, I interview Jim Marek. Jim spent over 7 years as a USMC Infantry officer before transitioning to Corporate America. When Jim came to his Career Conference in January 2016, he received multiple employment offers in roles focused in Consulting and Professional Sales. He ultimately chose to start his business career at H-P Enterprises. Since making his transition, Jim has worked at three different companies so the thrust of this conversation is focused on career management. Our conversation begins discussing Professional Sales and why JMOs have a misconception about this career field. Jim likens it to being to an Infantry Platoon Commander or the owner of a battle space. As a Sales Professional he made sure to understand how his customers go to market, so whatever he sold would help them cut costs or drive revenue. Jim worked to understand the financial, contracting, legal, marketing, delivery, product development and operations - basically every aspect of his customers business. We also hit on the topics of choosing a geographic location, getting an MBA while working and going through a merger with another company before focusing on navigating your business career. From there, we get to the heart of the discussion which is managing your own career. After delivering results in his initial role, Jim saw an opportunity at a different company to get to the next professional level and took the leap. I think that sometimes when people go multiple companies is a short amount of time they are viewed as indecisive. Jim is not indecisive - he is focused on growing his business career and experience. Be sure to tune in as Jim shares some interesting advice in regards to career management. Episode 023 is Part One of Jimi Letchford’s conversation with Jason and Rich about his life in service. Jimi is the former Director of CrossFit International and a Marine Infantry Officer. This part focuses on Jimi’s early life and then career in the military. He explains how wrestling and a well-placed jet led to a single-minded focus on the Naval Academy, and then injury derailed his dreams of becoming a SEAL and a chance meeting turned his focus to the Marine Corps and becoming a Lieutenant in the Infantry and tip of the spear in Iraq. Hear about his 9/11 story, training and mentors, pre-deployment wedding, a rather harrowing “wake-up call” to stay vigilant, loss, getting news about his first daughter’s birth while in Iraq, and how the “gung-ho” award winner uses his military lessons and training to approach leadership through giving and subordinate leadership. Jimi is a father of 5, Naval Academy Graduate, class of 2003, and was a friend of Travis Manion’s, whose family carries on their son’s legacy at the Travis Manion Foundation. He is currently the in the reserves at 4th Force Reconnaissance Company based out of California. Episode 024 (Part 2 of this conversation) is focused on Jimi’s work for CrossFit creating strong community bonds in addition to building the brand globally. On this episode of the podcast, I interview Austin Welty about his Conference preparation experience. Austin is a former USMC Infantry officer who attended the January 2019 Career Conference. After the conference, he launched his career as an Operational Team Leader at PACTIV. Austin has been a long-time listener of this podcast. As a result, he suggested we do an episode about Conference preparation from the perspective of someone who recently attended a Career Conference. So, we did just that with Austin. Austin shares his first-hand Conference experience by walking us from weeks before the Conference up to the present. He talks about his journey from admitting he wasn't sure of his transition options to explaining the interest he received at his Career Conference interviews, and finally to where he is today. It's great perspective for anyone in the process of transitioning and preparing for a Career Conference. Enjoy! Pete
