“The purpose of the lawsuit is to fully expose the bank's willing support to groups that are killing Americans—and others—overseas.” This announcement by attorney Nicholas “Deke” Deketomis sets up the gladiatorial arena between Big Banking and a team of well-meaning activist lawyers. The Iraq and Afghanistan Wars introduced the concept of IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices) and EFPs (Explosively Formed Penetrators) that seriously maim or kill. It appears that these bombs are still being made and utilized by terrorists overseas. Who is funding them? Could it possibly be a large global bank with a major branch in New York? Is a reverse money laundering scheme in place that allows money transactions to bypass Department of Justice sanctions? Deke and his colleagues—co-counsel Michael Carey and investigators Carol Morris and Jake Rutledge—set out to uncover the deceit and bring the white collar criminals to justice. With the help of Michael's friend and war veteran, Joel Hartbeck—who first blows the whistle against the bank—the Deketomis team quickly discovers that they may have tackled more than they bargained for. A dangerous right wing paramilitary group might be involved in protecting the bank's interests, and Hartbeck soon goes missing. As Deke's lawsuit progresses, the sudden appearance of IEDs and EFPs on US highways cause death and destruction. General Bolger's expertise guides us through the operational mazes of Afghanistan and Iraq, spotlighting the contrasts between conventional warfare and the guerrilla tactics that have shaped today's insurgencies. A detailed analysis of the challenges faced by American forces and the Afghan leadership paints a stark picture of the strategic missteps and the vital lessons that emerged amidst the dust of conflict. As we conclude, General Bolger urges a contemplative approach to understanding the strategic failures in Afghanistan, akin to the thorough British Chilcot Report. General Bolger's seasoned perspectives, drawn from a storied career and a keen historical lens, offer an invaluable masterclass in the art of war and the weighty decisions of those who lead nations into battle. In this episode of his "Thinking Out Loud" series, Double D discusses the hollowing out the the United States Military Industrial Complex, as well as how the U.S. Military and its defense contractors are riddled by corruption.Opening the video, Double D touches on rising tensions between the United States, Russia, and China. He views these tensions through the lens of the new Cold War, and suggests that despite the U.S. potential for power projection around the world, industrial and systemic trends in the U.S. may show that U.S. military might is not as all-encompassing as may be believed.Double D reads excerpts from an article from "Foreign Affairs" which examines the decades long trend of the hollowing out of the U.S. War Industry. He analyzes how in the past, war production was handled by Government Owned-Government Operated or GOGO plants, and that the U.S. used a vast bureaucracy to handle production and to pursue oversight for private contractors. He shows how gradually this system was dismantled, and the doors were thrown open for private investment, leading to today, where 88% of all military procurements are commercial.Moving on, Double D examines the rise of the Big Five Defense Contractors, Boeing, Raytheon, Northrup-Grumman, Lockheed-Martin, and General Dynamics. He shows how over a series of wars, these corporations were able to conglomerate in to massive entities that are responsible for the vast majority of domestic defense procurements. He shows how, through this process, these war corporations were also able to buy up what little oversight remained in defense contracting, establishing ties between the corporations and the highest points of power within the U.S. military apparatus. He also shows how defense contractors have forsaken practical production contractors for implements such as rifles, artillery shells, and ammunition, favoring instead experimental weapons systems which are tied to an endless reserve of government R and D dollars.Double D also examines the process of deindustrialization and offshoring of defense production. Highlighting the fact that only three plants manufacture military planes, only five plants produce missile systems, and only one plant had produced the black powder necessary for ammunition production until it exploded several years back. He shows how the contemporary U.S. Military is completely dependent on off shore production and foreign contractors. He also analyzes how the United States no longer has the skilled labor pool necessary to produce weapons of mass death, citing the reality that higher education as well as skill certification is locked behind a paywall that most Americans are unable to bypass; he contrasts this present day situation to the 1950's, where the U.S. government heavily subsidized education in the fields of science and technology.Moving on, Double D examines the culture of corruption that exists within the U.S. military itself. He cites several examples of theft and fraud that persisted through the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. He quotes a veteran who covers military corruption who said: "The amount of theft going on is worse than when I was a young soldier in Vietnam." Double D suggests that a culture of gangsterism, as well as the inefficiency and bottomless well of dollars which exists in the military, have created an organization where corruption has become the norm.Double D also examines the long history of Defense Contractors being involved in fraud and negligence. He cites examples from the Securities and Exchanges Commission, including cases against Halliburton, 3M, Boeing, and many more. He shows how the modern day military industrial complex has become another example of a gamified economic system, where efficiency and cost to value production no longer matter, having seemingly been replaced by a culture of graft and profit by any means necessary.Double D rounds off the video by suggesting that these trends sig

In this episode of his "Thinking Out Loud" series, Double D explores the increased cash bonus program being initiated by the U.S. military.Double D outlines the requirements for the military's increased cash bonuses, citing that not all enlistees will receive the maximum dollar amount, and clarifying that these bonuses do not equate to a lump sum, but rather an increased stipend divvied out week by week over the course of a four year enlistment period.Double D then jumps into another military enlistment scheme, a student-loan-forgiveness program that will write off up to $65,000 in debt. Double D plays a clip from @BreakThrough News featuring Mike Prysner of the @Empire Files , who discusses the stipulations surrounding the student-loan-forgiveness program. Prysner notes that only a few jobs provide for the maximum amount of student-loan relief: a laundry and shower specialist, a supply chain specialist (one of the most dangerous jobs in the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars), and a Mortuary Affairs technician; responsible for matching up body parts and shipping dead servicemen and civilians back to their families.Double D ruminates on the half truths and outright lies being peddled by the U.S. military, designed to get poor and desperate working people in the door of the recruitment office by offering them paltry sums of cash and debt relief which pale in comparison to their amount of time and energy spent with the military. He touches on the U.S. military's policy of preying on young people in the poorest school districts in America, namely rural rust belt areas, and deteriorated inner cities populated by people of color.Switching gears, Double D examines the Pentagon's new 'E-Sports' program, which involves recruitment officers using games like Fortnite, Call of Duty, and Battlefield to discuss military service with children as young as twelve years old. He touches also on the Intelligence Community's long history of involvement with Hollywood and mass media, citing their advising entrees in games such as Call of Duty in order to perpetuate a positive propaganda narrative around the United States military.Rounding off the video, Double D reads from the 'Young Marines' website, a community organization whose sole purpose is to groom children as young as eight years old for future military service.Double D closes the video by divining on the nature of American capitalist empire, stating that the U.S. has been responsible for the deaths of millions upon millions of people around the world, and touching on the sick reality of propaganda and child grooming that keeps America's War Machine well oiled and lethal.

The 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour, the Great War came to an end through the signing of the Armistice Agreement. On this day each year throughout the Commonwealth, we stop and remember those that lost their lives through the aggression of nations or power-hungry men looking to expand their country, resources and personal fortunes. In America, the same date is observed but with a different name, it is called Veterans Day. On November 8th, we commemorate our Canadian Indigenous Veterans. It is with sadness and gratitude we remember the men and women willing to fight in far off lands for the freedoms we enjoy today and will tomorrow. A great many families have been touched by the wars. Although the November 11 date was specific to World War 1, it has been expanded to included World War 2, the Korean War, the Vietnamese War, Iran Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. The November 11 date is of interest as 11: 11 holds much mystical meanings. The choosing of that date and time had to have been for reasons we are not privy too, but it is doubtful that this date was used because there was an opening in someone's calendar! The number 11 is a master number in numerology. It signifies new beginnings and new energies. It can signal angelic communications, or a spirit presence. But many see it as an indicator of an increasingly powerful ‘call to consciousness' that is occurring all over the planet. The depth of the 11:11 connection would appear to be synchronized to our level of awareness and understanding of how fundamental the connection that exists between the physical and spiritual worlds. There are many interpretations of the 11:11 phenomenon but all agree that it is always a positive outcome whatever the interpretation.

November 8, 2020 – The federal government should spend more on mental health treatment for returning veterans than bombs, an advocate working to reduce veteran suicides said Sunday. Veterans Administration figures show that 17 U.S. veterans commit suicide daily, about 7,300 a year, more than the number of soldiers killed in the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. Troy Yocum, founder and president of the Kentucky non-profit, Active Heroes, stated on the weekly Retail Politics Podcast with Gerry Shields that the suicide number has climbed to 20 per day since COVID. Soldiers returning from battle should decompress being sent home, said Yocum an Iraq War veteran. Returning veterans are asked whether they need therapy upon their return, he said. “I know if I check mark that box yes, I’m going to be on that base three more weeks,” Yocum said. “If I check mark that box no, I’m on my way home tomorrow.” Yocum’s World War II grandfather committed suicide, he said. His family attended a retreat to deal with the death, he said. Yocum realized that military families cannot bear the costs of participating in such retreats so he built his own near Louisville, Ky. The organization trains peer mentors to talk to veterans who may be struggling war horrors. Many veterans – stretching from World War II to Iraq – don’t share their battle experiences, Yocum said. Yocum encouraged all Americans, particularly fellow veterans, to connect with sufferers through email, text or just inviting them out for coffee to help them unburden themselves. Yocum’s uncle served in Vietnam. “He didn’t speak much about it until I came home from Iraq,” Yocum said. “It was almost like I passed a test.” The leading causes of veteran suicides include depression, survivor’s guild, substance abuse and war head injuries, Yocum said. The Veterans Administration has prioritized the issue by including allowing veterans thinking of killing themselves to press a number when they call, directing them to a crisis center. Veterans Administration hospital services now match the quality of private hospitals but getting into the system remains a hurdle, Yocum said. Frustrated, Yocum purchased private health insurance. “I waited seven months of filing paperwork to get into the VA system,” Yocum said. “There is always going to be more spent on bombs than healthcare.” Yocum drove an Army truck through Iraq roads littered with hidden explosives, resulting in endless anxiety, he said. “It’s not like something happens every minute that you’re there,” Yocum said. “But there is always the fear.” # # # Gerry Shields is author of the new book The Front Row: My Jagged Journey Recording American History from Reagan to Trump. Last Friday marked the 19th anniversary of September 11, 2001 — the atrocious terrorist attacks that changed America forever. In this episode of New Ideal Live, Onkar Ghate, Elan Journo and Ben Bayer sit down to discuss the legacy of the U.S. response to 9/11 and the lessons we should have learned from it. Among the topics discussed: The historical significance of 9/11; Why America’s failure to understand the ideological nature of its Islamist enemies crippled its response to the attacks; ARI’s philosophical, principled response to the attacks, and its policy recommendations; Why the morality of altruism is to blame for the failed American foreign policy; The reasons why the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars are “unwinnable.” Mentioned in the discussion are Dr. Leonard Peikoff’s essay "End States Who Sponsor Terrorism," Onkar Ghate and Elan Journo’s book Failing to Confront Islamic Totalitarianism (get a free copy here), and Elan Journo’s Winning the Unwinnable War. By the time you listen to this episode, COVID-19 will have likely killed more than 100,000 people in the United States—more Americans than the Revolutionary, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan Wars combined. Experts say the real tally is much higher. It's a devastating moment in a crisis that has already destroyed families, pushed nearly 40 million Americans out of work, revealed a government crippled by feeble leadership, and thrown daily life into chaos. How do we recognize that behind each death was a unique human life? How do we honor individual victims amid the tsunami of grief? It's hard. We don't have easy answers for you. But we do have some ideas. Rebecca Makkai, best-selling author of “The Great Believers", an epic about the AIDS crisis, discusses how she depicts the long tail of grief, and outlines lessons from one pandemic for another. Also on the show, scholar Elizabeth Outka, whose book "Viral Modernism: The Influenza Pandemic and Interwar Literature" traces the impact of the 1918 flu on 20th century literature, describes how American culture was utterly altered by that tragedy, and provides cues for how art can help memorialize the dead during this one.
Glenn Haughton OBE was the First Army Sergeant Major for many years and is now the SEAC - The Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chiefs of Staff Committee and is The Armed Forces Mental Health and Wellbeing Champion. .I absolutely LOVE this interview. Glenn is SO fascinating. What a lovely, inspiring man. Itching to start at 13 he finally was allowed to join the army from 16 and enjoyed a 32 year career in the army with the last 2 years being in defence - a career he is SO passionate about. His many life changing experiences range from being deployed to fight in the hardest battlefield situations in the Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan Wars to receiving an OBE from the Queen and we discuss it all. .Not only that, but can you believe that even HE - a man who you would imagine is the toughest of them all, the bravest - has also experienced his own mental health lows - and not from battlefield trauma, like you would first imagine (although he obviously knows clearly how this pain can affect and talks as an expert in this area) - but from a 'mental burnout' as he describes it in which he totally broke down and fell in to a tough period of depression. He opens up about this period and discusses his daily '1-10 Mantra' that he uses religiously that I URGE you to try for yourself. What a great idea and one of the best daily toolboxes for mental health I have ever heard..Glenn Haughton OBE - SEAC- on what he has learnt from his amazing life in the army, mental health, mindfulness and thriving in lockdown. Thanks again to Matt Keel for this intro - the best photographer ever - and yes Glenn agrees ;-).Also on youtube - link coming shortly / head to Alexandra Legouix youtube

Prospect today publishes an exclusive podcast interview with John Sawers, head of MI6 from 2009-2014. Sawers raises deep concerns over the security and intelligence consequences of Brexit. He says: “My concern on the intelligence and security front is over the exchange of data. Data is now central to the way in which security services in particular monitor threats. Track people who might pose a threat to UK security—and the rules on exchange of data are going to be set in the EU and we won't be round the table with our voice with our weight stressing the vital importance of these data exchanges to our national security.” On Theresa May, Sawers says: “I don't think she's a natural at engaging on these big political issues with foreign leaders.” On Britain in the world: “We have made less impact in the world in the last ten years than we did in the 30 years before that.” Sawers goes on to discuss the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars, Britain's failure to intervene in Syria, Russian meddling in western elections and relations between Britain and the US.
