Brett Johnson sits down with James and Terry of The Jukebox Romantics (Downstate NY) to talk about “The Walk to Heartwood” — a heartfelt standout from their 2025 full-length, This One Looks Cool.Equal parts punk gratitude and FEST devotion, the song is a self-described “love letter to Heartwood Soundstage” and the Gainesville DIY scene. Built around themes of chosen family, emotional return, and saying yes to the chaos, the track blends urgency and joy without a hint of sarcasm.James and Terry open up about writing from the heart, embracing vulnerability, and chasing authenticity over polish. From late-night singalongs to post-pandemic reconnections, this one's for the lifers.Follow The Jukebox Romantics:https://thejukeboxromantics.bandcamp.com/https://www.instagram.com/jukeboxromanticshttps://www.selltheheartrecords.comhttps://www.instagram.com/selltheheartrecordshttps://www.instagram.com/thefestfl/https://linktr.ee/thefestThanks for supporting B-Side Breakdown — where the song is just the start of the story.Brett JohnsonHost, B-Side Breakdownhttps://www.patreon.com/c/bsidebreakdownhttps://www.instagram.com/bsidebreakdownhttps://linktr.ee/bsidebreakdown#TheWalkToHeartwood #ThisOneLooksCool #TheJukeboxRomantics #bsidebreakdown #threecrowsclub #brettjamesjohnson #musicpodcast #FEST #punkrockfamily #HeartwoodSoundstage
In this episode of B-Side Breakdown, Brett Johnson sits down with Brad Gunnarson—better known around the Twin Cities as B-Gun—to unpack “Teenager,” a Deftones cover recorded under the project name Killing Stares. Originally appearing on White Pony, the song was reimagined for For the Song You Saved, a community-driven Deftones tribute benefiting Oasis for Youth. Brad talks through the long-held idea behind Killing Stares: assembling one-off lineups of musicians who don't normally play together and letting instinct guide the process. With Zac Boyd (johnnyrook) on acoustic guitar, Nick Larsen (ExactlyNo) on drums, and Callie from Dadbod on vocals, the track came together quickly and intentionally—sparse, emotional, and respectful of the original while still feeling personal. The conversation also traces Brad's decades in the Minneapolis–St. Paul music scene, his philosophy of “put out records with your friends,” and how this project reflects the power of community, timing, and doing things the right way.Follow Killing Stares:https://forthesongyousaved.bandcamp.com/https://www.instagram.com/killingstareshttps://www.oasisforyouth.org/https://www.instagram.com/cardinalsunrecordsThanks for supporting B-Side Breakdown — where the song is just the start of the story.Brett JohnsonHost, B-Side Breakdownhttps://www.patreon.com/c/bsidebreakdownhttps://www.instagram.com/bsidebreakdownhttps://linktr.ee/bsidebreakdown#KillingStares #Teenager #BradGunnarson #BGun #Deftones #WhitePony #ForTheSongYouSaved #OasisForYouth #TwinCitiesMusic #CommunityOverCompetition #BenefitCompilation #BSideBreakdown #BrettJamesJohnson #MusicPodcast
In this episode of B-Side Breakdown, Brett Johnson sits down with David Jarnstrom of Minneapolis post-hardcore stalwarts Dead History to talk about “Through the Shadows,” a standout track from the band's 2025 album Departures. Built around an initial guitar idea from Matt Rezac, the song took a long and winding path to completion—nearly left behind before emerging as one of the record's most spacious, groove-driven moments. David walks through the tension between restraint and power in the song's arrangement, the intentional use of space and feel, and why it occupies such a unique place on the album. The conversation also touches on the song's impressionistic lyrics, personal interpretations shaped by life in post-George Floyd Minneapolis, and the sense of endurance and rebuilding that runs quietly beneath the surface. With Departures likely marking a closing chapter for Dead History, this episode reflects on creative maturity, community, and seeing something through—even when it's hard.Follow Dead History:https://deadhistorymn.bandcamp.com/https://www.instagram.com/deadhistorybandThanks for supporting B-Side Breakdown — where the song is just the start of the story.Brett JohnsonHost, B-Side Breakdownhttps://www.patreon.com/c/bsidebreakdownhttps://www.instagram.com/bsidebreakdownhttps://linktr.ee/bsidebreakdown#DavidJarnstrom #DeadHistory #ThroughTheShadows #Departures #MinneapolisMusic #PostHardcore #Shoegaze #CreativeProcess #BSideBreakdown #BrettJamesJohnson #MusicPodcast
In this episode of B-Side Breakdown, Brett Johnson talks with Johnny Laberda from Battery Eyes and Andrew Cahak of Unstable Shapes about “Upside Down,” a collaborative track that stretches beyond both bands' usual comfort zones.Born from a casual conversation at Minneapolis mainstay Mortimer's, the song evolved into one of the most anthemic and stylistically distinct moments on Battery Eyes' upcoming album zero three. The discussion digs into the song's “Frankenstein” creation process—written separately, then stitched together through trust rather than traditional co-writing—and how shared vocals were designed to blur identity and perspective.Johnny and Andrew unpack the song's central idea of reframing situations, looking at problems from new angles, and embracing found interpretation over fixed meaning. The episode also highlights the importance of scene-level collaboration, thoughtful studio production, and why “Upside Down” feels just as much about creative process as it does about the lyrics themselves.Follow Battery Eyes:https://batteryeyes.bandcamp.com/https://www.instagram.com/batteryeyesFollow Unstable Shapes:https://unstableshapes.bandcamp.com/https://www.instagram.com/unstableshapesFollow Cloudland:https://www.instagram.com/cloudlandtheaterhttps://www.cloudlandtheater.com/Thanks for supporting B-Side Breakdown — where the song is just the start of the story.Brett JohnsonHost, B-Side Breakdownhttps://www.patreon.com/c/bsidebreakdownhttps://www.instagram.com/bsidebreakdownhttps://linktr.ee/bsidebreakdown#JohnnyLaberda #BatteryEyes #AndrewCahak #UnstableShapes #UpsideDown #ZeroThree #MinneapolisMusic #Collaboration #CreativeProcess #CloudlandTheater #BSideBreakdown #BrettJamesJohnson #MusicPodcast
In this episode of B-Side Breakdown, Brett Johnson talks with members of Too Late, But Still about “Feedback City,” a standout track from their 2025 EP Night Songs. The conversation traces how the song came together organically in the room, shaped less by traditional structure and more by evolving movements and shared instincts. Lyrically, “Feedback City” pulls directly from lived experience—tour memories, found objects, small personal details, and moments of humor and reflection that give the song its emotional weight. The band discusses their collaborative approach, their preference for short, focused releases over full-length albums, and why each song feels like a Polaroid of a specific moment in time. The episode also touches on creative freedom, resisting algorithm-driven expectations, and how trust between band members allows the music to unfold naturally without forcing it.Follow Too Late, But Still:https://toolatebutstill.bandcamp.com/https://instagram.com/toolatebutstillThanks for supporting B-Side Breakdown — where the song is just the start of the story.Brett JohnsonHost, B-Side Breakdownhttps://www.patreon.com/c/bsidebreakdownhttps://www.instagram.com/bsidebreakdownhttps://linktr.ee/bsidebreakdown#FeedbackCity #TooLateButStill #bsidebreakdown #threecrowsclub #brettjamesjohnson #NightSongs #minneapolismusic #posthardcore #musicpodcast
A new video of left wing agitator Alex Pretti was released by the BBC and it shows Pretti spitting at federal agents, screaming eff you's, flipping the bird and kicking out the tail lights of their car. Peaceful protest indeed. Pretti, carrying a gun, was taken to the ground and according to CNN suffered a broken rib. Amazingly, the didn't see the gun and let him go. Agents drove away. It's no wonder these thugs think they can get away with anything. Bruce Springsteen has a new song for the people of Minneapolis and my inbox is filling up with listeners that are deleting him from the playlists. Mayor Q says on radio that he was listening to our reporting about the Royals on Tuesday and I"m actually very happy for him. If a mayor found a way to get baseball downtown without a public vote, he deserves a statue at the new park. Vahe Gregorian of the KC Star pens a piece on why he didn't vote for Bill Belichick for the Hall of Fame, the very first person to admit it. When you hear his reason, you will understand just how different liberals and conservatives are in the way they think. Adam Schefter reports Gardner Minshew is 100% healthy and never did blow out his ACL. That means something bad was going on with the Chiefs, or their doctors. And gentlemen, we're about to share something with you that isn't available anywhere but KC. Its a new concept called www.flexcaves.com and its a place for business, storing a car or boat or having your weekly poker game and smoking cigars in a condo-like storage unit. They break ground this year in Martin City and Brett Johnson is here to explain why he thinks his ideas will be a huge hit.

Brett Johnson sits down with Travis Omilian of Banquets (Jersey City, NJ) to talk about “Goodbye Before You Go” — a stirring track from the band's first album in over a decade, Petty Relics. What started in 2010 as a group of friends making melodic punk with a wink (a band named after a beer, a debut 7" titled This Is Our Concern, Dude) has grown into something far deeper. Across Top Button, Bottom Shelf and their self-titled follow-up, Banquets built a reputation for tight arrangements, anthemic energy, and lyrical introspection that lingered longer than the last chord. Now, after ten years of silence, Petty Relics marks not just a return, but a reckoning. “Goodbye Before You Go” is a standout — a meditation on love, loss, and letting go that captures the band's matured voice. Travis opens up about writing from a place of deep personal meaning, about what it takes to reconnect with your sound after a decade, and why this particular goodbye needed a melody. With lines like “Say I am better to have known” and “We won't catch lightning like you again,” the song delivers both a farewell and a benediction — a moment of gratitude wrapped in grit. There's a quiet ache beneath the melodic lift, a layered balance of hope, hurt, and reflection that few bands in this genre ever touch.Be sure to show your support on Bancamp Friday and connect with them on IG to stay connected. Programs like OhioMeansJobs Centers and Jobs Ohio's "Find Your Ohio" initiative are connecting veterans with job resources and employers—sometimes before they even separate from the service.• Supporting Underemployed Veterans: While veteran unemployment rates are typically low, underemployment remains a concern. Employers and workforce agencies are collaborating to ensure vets find roles that match their skill sets and leadership experience—not just a quick paycheck.• Empowering Through Local & National Resources: Ohio offers veteran services offices in every county, and there's an abundance of government and nonprofit support for veterans and their families. Can we build a home without becoming stuck there? In this episode, Brett explores the paradox of shelter - the tension between being grounded and being guided. God knows our need for a place to belong, yet He never meant for that place to become our prison. This conversation invites us to live in the “in between”: anchored enough to stay in the game, but free enough to follow wherever the road leads. What if the promise of “finding pasture on every barren hill” was not just poetic, but prophetic? In this episode, Brett unpacks God's assurance of practical provision in times of delay. Where does restoration begin? In this episode, Brett explores the first step of restoration: acquiring and stewarding capital. This is not only about money, but about recognizing all forms of capital and the resources already in our hands. To do this, we must jettison the wilderness mentality, the mindset shaped by scarcity and survival, and learn to live with the abundance of the Promised Land. Babylonian and Egyptian economics have no place in the Kingdom. Restoration requires a renewed way of seeing and stewarding what God entrusts to us. This conversation invites us to shift from fear to faith, from lack to stewardship, and from wandering to building. What happens to our faith when waiting turns weary? In this episode, Brett explores how followers of Jesus often cope during the long delay, and how some of those responses, while understandable, can quietly corrode faith. He identifies six “rotten responses” that surface when hope feels deferred. Each of these reactions reveals our struggle to stay anchored in trust when God seems silent. Yet Brett invites us to a more fruitful posture. This conversation calls us out of striving and back into surrender, where faith finds its strength again in the waiting. What do you do when God delays? In this episode, Brett explores the tension of the in-between, the space between what God has spoken and when it finally comes to pass. In a world that expects everything instantly, even small delays can test our patience. But what happens when the waiting stretches into years, when careers stall, dreams fade, and hopes for family or calling remain deferred? This is where delay can become dangerous. The long wait can birth a crisis of faith or a quiet theology of failure. Yet Brett reminds us that delay is not denial. It is often the University of the Desert, where God shapes character and refines trust. From Jesus' delay with Lazarus to the trials of those who have endured unbroken seasons of apparent failure, this conversation reframes waiting as holy ground. It is the place where faith matures and God's glory is revealed in His timing, not ours. What if the Kingdom dreamers are not the “white picket fence people,” but those whose souls have been salted by difficulty and marinated in pain? In this episode, Brett speaks to the ones who have carried God-given dreams through deep delays — the weary yet faithful, still believing in promises seen only “from a distance.” He cautions against mistaking the journey for a shortcut to success, reminding us instead that endurance is the language of faith. Set in an age of polarization and the orphanization of generations, this conversation revisits Hebrews 11 — the hall of those who worshiped, walked, worked, and waited with God through the unseen. From Abel to Moses, their stories remind us that faith is not fast, but formative.
