Since so many of our T.REX folks are military veterans and first responders, we're always eager to find out more about groups than can assist these individuals with their very specific struggles. In this episode, Jeremy Stalnecker, Executive Director of the Mighty Oaks Foundation, talks about his transition from Marine Infantry Officer to civilian life, and what his organization does to help others.https://www.mightyoaksprograms.org/
We talk a lot about the struggles of transitioning out of the military – losing that sense of purpose, the steady paycheck, and the tribe you trust. But what we don't highlight enough is the flip side: how that transition can be a launchpad to an incredible career or business and a life you design. In this episode, I'm sitting down with Brendan Aronson, a Marine turned entrepreneur who's all about creating pathways for veterans into leadership roles. From his time in investment banking to building a company that connects vets with high-growth careers, he's got a front-row seat to what works and what doesn't after you hang up the uniform. We're covering: Top challenges for transitioning service members Why venture capital isn't always the answer for startups Networking tips to kickstart your civilian career Balancing the veteran community with the wider world Brendan is a former Marine Infantry Officer. He's a U.S. Naval Academy Graduate and a Wharton MBA Alumnus. He is a serial entrepreneur and built TheMilVet, which is the Nation's premier executive search firm focused on landing veterans jobs in high-growth companies. He's a co-founder and Managing Partner of The Valhalla Group, which invests in U.S. National Security. https://milmo.co/podcast/navigating-into-civilian-life For more MILMO, follow at: MILMO.co ItsMILMO on YouTube @itsmilmo on X @itsmilmo Instagram @itsmilmo LinkedIn @itsmilmo Facebook
Ron Lasorsa, a former Marine Infantry Officer and Wall Street trader, has created the Victory Litigation Fund to seek justice and compensation for veterans affected by toxic exposure. He is challenging the legal industry and redirecting funds back into the veteran community. Ron is currently involved in the Camp Lejeune toxic water litigation, where he has filed a lawsuit against the lawyer responsible for the special interest bill that limited veterans' eligibility for compensation. He plans to audit the docket and expose fraudulent claims, potentially recovering $7.5 billion for veterans. Ron envisions using the funds to invest in companies, provide legal services, and establish an alternative healthcare system for veterans. Ron Lasorsa discusses his determination to fight for justice for veterans affected by toxic exposure at Camp Lejeune. He explains his plan to audit the docket as a special master and lobby Congress to change the law to make it easier for veterans to receive benefits. Lasorsa also discusses his vision for using the funds from the Victory Litigation Fund to support veteran entrepreneurship and address critical issues in the veteran community. He emphasizes the importance of veterans supporting each other and creating a cohesive community. Jack joins host Chuck Randolph to discuss:How his time in the Marines has influenced his leadership style. The evolution in training for crisis response in high-risk environments. How to understand the needs of the customer or protectee and build a strategy around it.The best ways to add value in a crisis (hint: it's not a knee-jerk reaction).Key takeaways:[12:29] Jack Stradley: The main thing I realized when I was COO of an organization was that security has so many different definitions. I worked with a company that did strictly bomb blast mitigation on buildings and then I had a bunch of EP guys that ran around with surveillance kits who thought about motorcade tactics — and those two people never talked to each other. One of the things the Marine Corps taught me was the “combined arms team.” You know that you don't fight in a silo — you bring your artillery, logistics, and your air power and you all work seamlessly together.[14:01] Jack Stradley: Today there are tremendously talented people with skills who apply those skills to do security or protection or analysis. Is really kind of easy. It's bringing all the pieces together and then showing value — making people understand the value because security for security's sake is not necessarily valuable. Security is when you can quantify or articulate its value.[14:50] Jack Stradley: It's important to remember the risk and the reward for what you're doing and there are no perfect solutions. You know you can't live inside Fort Knox and never leave. That's not a realistic approach so there are always trade-offs. There's always a risk tolerance that has to be understood. That's the ongoing struggle because risk tolerance for each one of us is different. [24:35] Chuck: You're involved when many things go south for organizations. How do you help organizations or what's your recommendation for maintaining a presence of mind? [25:23] Jack Stradley: I think that most people react in a crisis and that's the last thing you want to do. You want to take a beat — now that beat can be a microsecond but you take a beat and you evaluate. You look, you listen, you think, then you act — act deliberately, don't react. Before you have to commit to a course of action and you should take as long as you have but no longer to evaluate things and then make a conscious decision and then continue to evaluate because if it's not working it's maybe time to change course.[31:10] Jack Stradley: We are inundated with information and that's not a revelation to anyone out there. The hard part is to just you know, be able to see through the noise in the chatter and try and get to the fundamentals in the foundation. Understand — what does this mean to me and how does this affect me and my plans? That's part of what we try to do for people is help them with that.
(Lab 2 Begins at Min 4:38) In Lab 2, join Gary Hess, Tyler, and Jose for a profound and powerful exploration of Gary's wartime experiences and his journey out of darkness. Learn about his life mission to lead others towards healing through non-western approaches, such as medical marijuana and psychedelics. This conversation is a game-changer for veterans and trauma communities who no longer have to rely solely on the western model of medicine to find paths to recovery, stability, and post-traumatic growth. Delve into the concepts of balance, alignment, and reconnection as the trio discusses the true nature of trauma – it's not what happens to us, but what remains inside of us. Many veterans never truly make it home, with painful, unprocessed emotions causing disassociation, isolation, and avoidance. This perpetual state of fight or flight can lead to chronic conditions, broken homes, and suffering families. The pharmaceutical strategy, aimed at treating mental and physical conditions, often only suppresses symptoms without addressing the root cause. This can lead to dependency, substance abuse, addiction, and even suicide. With staggering statistics – over 200,000 veterans and service members lost to suicide since 2001 – it's clear that real options for healing are desperately needed. Jim received a Bachelor of Science degree from California State College and a Juris Doctor degree from Thomas Jefferson University School of Law. He was selected to attend the first Southern California Key Executive MBA program introduced by Pepperdine University. While attending undergraduate school he was the first and only student to volunteer for service in the USMC during the Vietnam War. As a Marine Infantry Officer he was decorated for Valor in combat and led over 200 patrols and ambushes against the enemy. After Vietnam came a tour at Camp Lejeune where he was in charge of a Rifle Training Company while attending US Naval Justice School. He was then assigned to Camp Pendleton as a Reserve Liaison Officer with the objective of rejuvenating Marine Corps Reserve Units because of a massive reduction in Active Duty personnel that had taken place. Jim was then appointed General's Aide-de-Camp to General Hugh Hardy and General Paul Godfrey. He medically retired as a Captain after serving 12 years on active and reserve duty. While attending Law School Jim helped initiate the Veterans Outreach Program at San Diego State University (the first of its kind) helping downtrodden veterans who were discharged from the military without an Honorable Discharge due to drug/alcohol abuse or psychological reasons. Jim felt strongly about these veterans who came home to a divided country and wanted to help them achieve a General or Honorable Discharge status so they could be eligible for government educational and vocational benefits. Jim earned two American Jurisprudence Awards in Torts and Trial Practice. He was selected as President of Nu Beta Epsilon, the prestigious National Legal Honorary Society. Jim's passion of honoring Military heroes and remembering their sacrifices led to his short story, “In Search of Heroes.” This story has led to two Off Broadway Productions–“In Search of Heroes” and “The Remnant.” He has expanded his passion to include motivational talks to the younger generation of Americans to learn about these TRUE American Heroes. Jim is a member of First Marine Division Association, Third Marine Division Association and Disabled American Veterans. James Kyle has over 40 years of experience in Venture Capital for Commodity Trading, Corporate Finance and Real Estate Development. His ability to disrupt standard industry procedures has been the key to his success in providing capital to many ventures. From his initial interest in the volatile Commodity Futures market; he was instrumental in the formation of the first Managed Commodity Trading Funds of the 70s. By setting aside the standard of management fees and retail commissions he introduced Trading Funds that only charged their clients a percentage of the profits! This disruptive change led to raising capital for some of the most successful Traders in the Managed Commodities market. Pivoting from the commodity market to high-risk business ventures in the 80s was a natural step for him by applying his disruptive standard to raising capital for startup companies. His clients would be introduced to ventures that believed in the stockholder first. Kyle's mandate–No salaries, no perks, no compensation for the principals /owners until the company was profitable. He continues to bring his passionate disruptive change standard to his current Advisory and Director positions. Bryan Rhode is the CEO and Founder of ACUMEN (www.ShopACUMEN.com) a revolutionary clothing line, designed to help men look sharp throughout the day. It truly is an amazing idea which was inspired by Bryan's service as a United States Marine Corps Officer. Though the idea of the ACUMEN is incredible, what we enjoyed most is Bryan's journey from his military days to becoming a attorney, getting into politics, and finally becoming a entrepreneur. If you think you have to do what you've always done, listen to Bryan's story, and you'll be inspired to take action on your dream! Bryan and Eric, two marine corps brothers, had a great time on this episode of Lead Sell Grow - The Human Experience Podcast. What was most fascinating about Bryan's story is how he continues to pivot in new directions. It's almost as if he's fearless. We discussed his journey of becoming a Marine Infantry Officer and then later on going to school to become a lawyer. He then ran for public office, and when that didn't work out, Bryan went into corporate law. It's truly amazing to see someone try so many things in their life. After seeing men struggle with keeping their shirts neatly tucked in, Bryan developed a revolutionary clothing idea, inspired by the shirt stays marines wear to look "sharp" in their uniforms, and brought the idea to life with ACUMEN.If you're looking to improve your self esteem, be sure to check out our episode with Dr. Shad HelmstetterIf you enjoy the episode, please be sure to subscribe and leave a review here. Mettle of Honor: Veteran Stories of Personal Strength, Courage, and Perseverance
Scott A. Huesing is a retired USMC Infantry Major with over 24 years of service, both enlisted and as a commissioned officer. His career spanned 10 deployments and he conducted operations in over 60 countries worldwide. During his numerous deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Horn of Africa he planned, led, and conducted hundreds of combat missions under some of the most austere and challenging conditions. As a Marine Infantry Officer in 2006 Scott had the privilege to command Echo Company, 2d Battalion, 4th Marines as part of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), Special Operations Capable (SOC) while attached to 1-9 Infantry Battalion ("Manchu"), 1st Brigade Combat Team (1 BCT “Ready First”), United States Army (USA) as part of the Surge Strategy in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. In his book, Huesing transports readers to the deadly streets of Iraq in this visceral, gripping portrayal of urban combat. Bound together by honor and surrounded by chaos, they battled on the frontlines of a war without rules against an elusive, ruthless enemy who wore no uniforms and showed little mercy. Page after page, Huesing brings the resilience and bravery of the Marines brilliantly to life and shows how the devastation and terror of combat that left indelible scars on these heroes' bodies, psyches, and souls. Like earlier classics about men at war--Helmet for My Pillow, We Were Soldiers Once and Young, and Generation Kill—Echo in Ramadi is an unforgettable portrayal of war that will leave readers amazed and, at times, moved by the author's masterful way of capturing the experiences and emotions of combat. What's going on everyone, Welcome to another edition of Confessions of a Native Son, I'm your host Mike Steadman. I'm a Marine Corps Veteran, Entrepreneur, and Aspiring author, who enjoys thought-provoking and engaging dialogue about race, culture, and business. In this episode, I chop it up with another brother from another mother, Mr. Nate Jester. Nate is an African-American Naval Academy Graduate and Marine Infantry Officer, who recently graduated from Harvard Law School. Nate relocated to his hometown of Atlanta Georgia, in order to leverage his human capital in the community that raised him. Nate's passion is to uplift oppressed people in the United States and utilize his newly acquired legal knowledge as a force for good. Harvard Law school has given Nate the words to describe the issues of education, crime, and poverty he witnessed growing up and an understanding of the legal and political systems that perpetuate those issues. To be quite frank, Nate is one of the smartest people I know. He double-majored at the Naval Academy in Political Science and Economics, maintaining nearly a 4.0 average the entire time. I brought Nate on the platform to better understand his experience of being young, black and educated. He shares insight into how his giftedness was almost overlooked an early age due to culturally bias aptitude testing, growing up in all black school system, the challenge of maintaining his blackness at the Naval Academy and in the Marines, and why it's problematic when black people let other determine our value and worth. Nate is done dumbing down his greatness and is comfortable fully expressing himself as an unapologetic black man. As always, I truly appreciate you for sharing your time with me, and I hope you enjoy today's show.

Episode 023 is Part One of Jimi Letchford’s conversation with Jason and Rich about his life in service. Jimi is the former Director of CrossFit International and a Marine Infantry Officer. This part focuses on Jimi’s early life and then career in the military. He explains how wrestling and a well-placed jet led to a single-minded focus on the Naval Academy, and then injury derailed his dreams of becoming a SEAL and a chance meeting turned his focus to the Marine Corps and becoming a Lieutenant in the Infantry and tip of the spear in Iraq. Hear about his 9/11 story, training and mentors, pre-deployment wedding, a rather harrowing “wake-up call” to stay vigilant, loss, getting news about his first daughter’s birth while in Iraq, and how the “gung-ho” award winner uses his military lessons and training to approach leadership through giving and subordinate leadership. Jimi is a father of 5, Naval Academy Graduate, class of 2003, and was a friend of Travis Manion’s, whose family carries on their son’s legacy at the Travis Manion Foundation. He is currently the in the reserves at 4th Force Reconnaissance Company based out of California. Episode 024 (Part 2 of this conversation) is focused on Jimi’s work for CrossFit creating strong community bonds in addition to building the brand globally. #012 On Today’s show we have John McCarthy of the Postmodern Patriot Podcast on the show. John is a former Marine Infantry Officer who is obsessed with individual performance in the realms of health, wealth, relationships, and the intersection of all three. He recently became a father last year, and like most dads, he was under a lot of stress. Not only was John dealing with the stresses of becoming a father, but he did so in the midst of transitioning out of the military, graduating with his MBA, finding a new job, moving back to his home state of New Jersey, buying a house, and transitioning back into civilian life with his then pregnant wife. As you might expect, these compounding stresses caused John to gain a ton of weight in the midst of early fatherhood - poor sleep hygiene, no time to workout, ate whatever he wanted, etc. But as a former CrossFit coach with his L1 and L2 he knew what he had to do to get back into fighting shape. He just needed to get clear on his why first before he could come up with the how. Throughout our conversation, you’ll here: How John used CrossFit to get him into good enough shape to get into the Marine CorpsHow quickly he fell out of shape once the stressors of life came crashing downAnd how he got clear on his goals and took immediate action to lose all the weightYou’ll want to stick around to the end of the show where we discuss how focusing on nutrition is one of the key pillars to achieving your fitness goals. Eric is now the Founder and CEO of The Program, a leadership development and team building company that works with corporate teams and leading collegiate and professional athletic organizations around the United States. “everyone is going to tell you that right now is a bad time to start your business, don't believe them. Number one in a recession or in a tough market it's a great time to start a business because in a recession or in a tough market you will very quickly find out what your core business is because you won't be able to sell anything else other than what you are the best in the world at because there is just not money out there being put towards it. Second on that same point though… And that it's not the right time to start a business that is like is there a right time to get married, is there a right time to start a family? If you are waiting for the right time chances are you will wait forever. Instead if you think you want to do it then go and do it, just go and do it and then be prepared to work really hard in making that decision the right decision. Number one. Number two he told me don't ever talk yourself into believing that you are worth less than what you are. Most people do… Things aren't cheap or expensive it's a question of value. Okay it cost a lot of money but I'm giving you that value that is signified by that price. Believe in it because what you are saying is you are believing in yourself. You are providing that value. Too many people talk their own personal value down. Don't, don't do it ”…[Listen for More] Click Here for Show Notes To Listen or to Get the Show Notes go to https://wp.me/p6Tf4b-7ft

Dan Burton is the Founder and CEO of DroneBase, the largest global drone operations, which provides businesses with stunning aerial information to make better, real-time decisions about their most critical assets. Under Burtons vision and leadership, DroneBase has become the trusted, go-to drone platform for aerial images and data for worldwide enterprise clients. As a result, the company has grown its global pilot network 10x year over year, has completed 100,000 commercial flights, and has raised capital from top VC firms including Union Square Ventures, Upfront, and SkyFund (the joint venture between Accel and DJI). Dan Burton – Drones in the Business World Before founding DroneBase, Dan Burton analyzed industries for global corporations on Goldman Sachs Technology, Media & Telecom Group. He initially became a drone enthusiast during his service as a Marine Infantry Officer in Iraq and Afghanistan from 2007 - 2011. While in the Marines, the drone industry was just getting started and he watched it grow from the likes of the first desktop computers to iPhones. Burton started his career as a Special Projects Assistant in the U.S. Senate. Burton has an MBA from Harvard Business School and a Bachelor of Arts from New York University. “For any veteran, the transition may be under-appreciated; that’s a difficult thing.” – Dan Burton Quick Transition The transition from the Marine Corps to Harvard Business School definitely came up quick for Dan. He loves the USMC and everything it stands for. Dan lived in New York during September 11 and saw it all happen. As a result, the events of 9-11 caused Dan to take a deeper look at his military training. Consequently, he realized that in the USMC their drone technology was second to none. “Drone technology that was miniaturizing and computerizing; I really believe that it would transform the business world.” – Dan Burton Starting a Business Dan initially left the finance world with no income and no healthcare to start his business. Hence, the clock was ticking but he was passionate about his belief drone technology could transform the business world. He sought out anyone who was doing commercial drone operations including veterans who had worksites and started doing work for free to put his company out there. “It’s really hard to start a business; I would only recommend doing it if there is a problem you really want to see solved.” – Dan Burton Don’t forget to leave us a 5-star rating and review if you enjoyed the show. There have been some guys in the veteran community who have made a really successful transition out of the military and into doing comedy that plays on their service. Mat Best comes to mind of course, and so does this guest, former Marine Infantry Officer, Donny O'Malley. Donny is not only a YouTube sensation, but he authored the book "Embarrassing Confessions of a Marine Lieutenant." We hear about his time captaining a wounded warrior battalion after college, as well as a hilarious anecdote from his failed attempt at being a teacher. Donny talks about his initial vision getting into comedy, and where it is now with his own company and subscription service, Vet TV. Donny's website is DonnyOMalley.com, and you can follow him on all social media platforms @DonnyOMalley. Jason and I also talk about the Alabama Senate race of Roy Moore VS Doug Jones (you'll hear whose prediction was correct as we recorded this the night of the election,) Dennis Rodman asking President Trump for a formal role as North Korea envoy (you know I like to seize on any opportunity to talk about The Worm,) and of course the failed terrorist attack on Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City.
