On June 9, 1912, a midnight massacre would change the town of Villisca, Iowa,  forever, creating harsh divides between classes, races, families and churches. After attending Sunday service, the Moore family returned home with guests Ina and Lena Stillinger, where they shared a plate of milk and cookies before retiring for the evening. An unknown assailant waited in the wings and gruesomely butchered all six of the Moores and the two Stillinger children. The killer's identity remains a mystery, but he left behind tell-tale signs of someone who'd done this before, making the string of axe murders plaguing the Midwest one of America's first serial killings. We'll look at three possible suspects and analyze the implications their guilt had on Villisca. This is not a story with a happy ending, but we'll try to bring some levity with Halee's incredible Dead Velvet Cake. Happy Haunting!

This week, Hadley shares the tale of the Villisca Axe Murder House in Villisca, Iowa, and unpacks the true crime event that turned the domestic symbol of the American dream into a nightmare. A quaint farmhouse built in 1868, the home is forever marked by tragedy after a family of six and their two young house guests were murdered on a June night in 1912. After reviewing the details of the unsolved case, the co-hosts discuss the current state of the home and the reports of strange occurrences from visitors and current owners. Spooked by the familiarity of this story's setting, Alyssa and Hadley bring on production designer Jerry Wanek, who brought the sets to life on The CW's Supernatural, to learn more about how once-friendly houses like the Villisca Axe Murder House have influenced television shows and films (41:27). Wanek shares anecdotes from the Supernatural set, including the inspiration behind the show's quirky motel rooms (51:53) and where his team sourced the best vintage props (55:11), as well as a spooky encounter he had while staying in a Los Angeles apartment previously inhabited by Elvis (59:48). TW: Sexual assaultCONTRIBUTORSHost/Producer: Alyssa FiorentinoHost/Producer: Hadley MendelsohnProducer: May TsehaySound Engineer: Josh Caldwell

In this Halloween week episode of Criminology, we're discussing two horrific and infamous ax murder cases. In 1912, in Villisca Iowa, eight people were murdered in the Moore family farmhouse. All six members of the Moore family were killed along with sisters Lena and Ina Stillinger who were staying the night. In 1922, at the Hinterkaifeck farm in Bavaria, Germany, 5 members of the Gruber family and their maid were brutally murdered. These are two very infamous unsolved cases of massacres carried out with some type of ax. And even though the two incidents occurred years apart, and far away from each, there are many similarities between the two cases. Some have theorized that they were both carried out by the same person or persons. The other thing that ties these two cases together is that they both involve a little bit of the supernatural. Ever wonder what it would be like to direct a film about a Hollywood legend or try to divide your passions equally between being an actor, cinematographer, director and singer? Not many of us have, but Lonnie Senstock does exactly this on a daily basis! He is a regular raconteur, and has been hired to tell the story of the legendary screenwriter and mega television producer Lew Hunter called Once in a Lew Moon. Lew has taught in the Writer’s Master program at UCLA and who has been known to host 20 hopeful scriptwriters in his home at a time coaching and teaching them the secrets to writing a successful script! Hunter has been the mastermind behind some great programming catapulting societal entertainment into a new era in the 60s and 70s including Bewitched, Little House on the Prairie, Quincy among so many others. Lonnie will tell you stories about Lew and his unique contributions to the world of entertainment and about the many renowned actors, writers and directors in his film such as: Oliver Stone, Patty Duke, Paul Castro, to name a few... Lonnie is beginning work on a film about the story of Julia Arnaz, Lucille Ball’s estranged granddaughter with Whitney Perry in the lead. Whitney’s career began in modeling but is proving to be quite talented in the acting department! Lonnie has also created the song for Once in a Lew Moon with his lovely Partner, Jamie Shelton. Lonnie was also the cinematographer for the movie "Lucky" about lottery winners which has just been selected for the Sundance Film Festival and nominated for the Grand Jury Prize. Lonnie is also featured in a film currently showing over seas called "Haunting Villisca" about the true ax murders of 1912 of Villisca Iowa. Tired yet? This is not all he is doing.. so much more to come in the show… learn about what it takes to multitask, and be multi-talented in the world of art and entertainment... and how to pick and choose your passions... www.onceinalewmoon.com
