One of my absolute favorites! This is the first of a three part interview I did with Dr. Ed Epperly about the notorious 1912 Villisca Axe Murders. (Original publish date 5/23/2022) On June 9th (or) 10th, 1912, America experienced of the most notorious crimes in its history - the brutal axe murders of Josiah and Sarah Moore, their four children (Herman, Katherine, Boyd and Paul) and Ina and Lena Stillinger, two neighbor girls who had the terrible misfortune of sleeping over that night. It's a case steeped in mystery, with a gruesome crime scene, puzzling evidence, twists and turns and compelling suspects. My guest - Dr. Edgar Epperly - has spent almost seventy years interviewing eyewitnesses and key figures and pouring over historical records related to the crime. He is considered the foremost authority on the case. The culmination of his decades of work is a comprehensive book on the subject published at the end of 2021, called "Fiend Incarnate: Villisca Axe Murders of 1912". This is an absolute must read for anyone interested in the case. Listener discretion is advised on this episode, as it contains adult themes and language. Choosing your career path can feel like a huge decision and lead to a lot of anxious thoughts. What if you don't enjoy the work as much as you hoped, or you find the culture at your new job doesn't suit you? Is it okay to switch industries, or will that mean you don't progress? There can be so many choices and expectations that it can be easy to feel pressured. This week on On Your Marks, we sit down with career coach Helen Tupper. She's the author of 'Squiggly Careers' and founder and CEO of Amazing If, an organisation that helps everyone feel more satisfied with their working lives. We dig into how to build a career journey that's right for you, from figuring out your values to what really matters to you in the workplace, and discuss practical steps we can all take towards feeling more confident in our career path. This week, we sit down with Professor Russell Foster from the University of Oxford. In this week's episode we're looking at the spread and normalisation of anti-LGBTQ+ hate online, and its dramatic, real-life consequences. The hysteria promoted by extremists around a so-called gay or trans agenda has led to a societal and legislative backlash for LGBTQ+ people in the US. And the hate has festered in the most mainstream of online spaces. We discuss some of the conspiracy theories against LGBTQ+ people, the link between online and offline violence, and what tech companies can do to protect this marginalised community.Archie Macfarlane is joined by Sarah Moore, the senior manager of news and research at GLAAD, a non-profit LGBTQ+ advocacy organisation, based in the US.You can read a transcript of this episode here. This is a special bonus episode of The Disagreement. In our most recent episode, nurse Megan Tucker and parent coach Sarah Moore talked about sleep training: specifically, the “cry-it-out” method (also known as the extinction method). It's a controversial parenting technique — one which Megan often advises, but Sarah Moore does not.We wanted to get into the alternatives, but didn't have enough time in the main disagreement. Sarah agreed to come back and talk about the other options available to parents — what she calls the more ‘gentle techniques.' Sarah Moore is a conscious parenting trainer and founder of Dandelion Seeds Positive Parenting. Sarah is Board Chair for the American Society for the Positive Care of Children, and the author of Peaceful Discipline: Story Teaching, Brain Science & Better Behavior. If you haven't listened to the original disagreement between Megan and Sarah yet, head over to our feed and take a listen. Or start right here and then circle back for the more comprehensive dive into the topic.

This week, we're all about finding what works for you. We all know that one of the awesome things about the ACCA qualification is its flexibility. From how many exams you sit at a time to whether you do self-study, or learn with a provider, there are so many routes of entry that it's rare for two people's journeys to look exactly the same. So this week, we sit down with Paul Kirkwood - ACCA UK's Regional Head of Education and Learning. He takes us through the wide variety of options available to support you on your journey, as well as give some inside tips on what ACCA's data shows makes a difference to exam results. Plus, we chat to Shaun Fenwick – he's recently passed all his exams and is now a qualified ACCA accountant. He shares his journey - including some stops, starts, and resits - and gives some stellar advice on how to keep going when the going gets tough. This is On Your Marks. Because you'll never know until you try. Hit follow now so you never miss an episode, and let us know what you think by leaving a rating or review. This week, we're kicking procrastination. We've all been there. You're settled down to do some revision, or write an important email, then the first thought creeps in… “What if I just checked my phone? Or… cleaned the kitchen? Or watched just half an episode of that new show…” And before you know it, 3 hours have gone by, you're tired, and it's too late to get started. Procrastinating on tasks, even ones we care about, is a normal, if painful, part of life for most of us. So this week, we sit down with Dr Julia Ravey. She's a neuroscientist, author, and self-confessed procrastinator. She's an expert in understanding what's happening in our brains when we put off tasks – from conflicts between the logical and emotional centres of our brains, to tricks for creating sustainable revision habits. This week, we're talking relationships. When we're pushing towards a goal, or just generally having a tough time, many of us will instinctively turn to our friends, family, colleagues, or even pets for support. But… why? What is it about our relationships that can help pick us up when we're feeling down? And why is nurturing those connections key to both our physical and mental health, and achieving our goals? This week, we sit down with Dr Anna Machin. She's an evolutionary anthropologist who's spent her career studying the science of close human relationships. From the neurochemicals underlying your tightest friendships to the best social activities for your brain when facing down deadlines, we're digging deep into how our connection with others helps us get where we want to be. Whether it's failing an exam you worked hard for, having to drop out of athletic training due to an injury, or just generally feeling down on your luck, we've all experienced loss or failure in some form or another. So this week, we sit down with entrepreneur Josh Wintersgill to dig into the topic of resilience. From tips for facing up to failure to an honest look at coping when we're feeling low, we're chatting strategies to keep us all going when the going gets tough. This is On Your Marks. Why, from a brain science perspective, do so many punishments end up failing or even backfiring; Is peaceful discipline for all kids, or just sensitive ones? What about strong-willed children? Why do we need to be parent-centric in how we approach behavior, rather than trying to modify our children's behavior? What does that look like? What about when peaceful discipline is hard for us? Do we have to parent this way ALL the time? What if parenting this way doesn't come naturally? What is story teaching?
