Elle était plutôt réservée aux noyés. Elle consistait à effet à souffler de la fumée de tabac dans le rectum de la victime.On le faisait au moyen de dispositifs variés. Ils étaient en général composés d'un tuyau souple, introduit dans l'anus du noyé. Ce tuyau pouvait être formé d'un fourreau d'épée, ou d'une gaine de couteau, dont on avait coupé le bout. À l'autre extrémité, on avait fixé un soufflet. On pouvait aussi souffler par la bouche.Ces machines étaient courantes, et faisaient même l'objet d'un véritable marché. On en trouvait souvent près des cours d'eau. C'est que l'insufflation de tabac dans le rectum était une pratique de réanimation très répandue.D'après les témoignages, elle semblait efficace. On pensait en effet que la chaleur ressentie par le noyé était de nature à lui faire reprendre vie. Sans qu'on sache précisément, d'ailleurs, comment cette méthode opérait.L'origine de cette technique de réanimation n'est pas précisément connue. Certains la font remonter à un pédiatre ayant vécu au XVe siècle ou même aux Indiens d'Amérique.Ce qui est sûr, c'est que certains grands esprits des Lumières, comme le physicien Réaumur ou le médecin Samuel Tissot se font l'écho de cette curieuse méthode de réanimation.Si l'efficacité de cette pratique n'est guère argumentée, elle témoigne de l'action thérapeutique qu'on prêtait alors au tabac. En effet, on ne l'utilisait pas seulement pour ranimer les noyés, mais aussi pour favoriser le transit intestinal ou calmer les douleurs abdominales.Si une telle méthode peut paraître étrange, les autres le sont encore plus.
