This Week, Tony is joined by Gail Ryder to talk about The Fifth Beatle. by Vivek J. Tiwary (Author), Andrew C. Robinson (Illustrator), Kyle Baker (Illustrator) THE FIFTH BEATLE is an award-winning, #1 New York Times best selling graphic novel and forthcoming TV event series recounting the untold true story of Brian Epstein– the brilliant visionary who discovered the Beatles in a cellar in Liverpool, nurtured, protected, and guided them to international stardom, but died painfully lonely at the age of 32. It’s a human story about the struggle to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds—Brian was homosexual when it was a felony to be so, Jewish at a time of anti-Semitism, and from Liverpool when it was just a dingy port town. It’s a story about staggering ambition yielding staggering success, through a desire to change the world by messages of love and peace. A story about being an outsider and trying desperately to belong. A story about speed, triumph, and tragedy. A story whose themes resonate deeply across generations, sexes, and sexual preferences. A story full of dreams and music… The greatest music of all time. Winner of the Will Eisner Comic Industry Award, Best Reality-Based Work Winner of two Harvey Awards, including Best Original Graphic Album Lambda Literary Award Finalist, Best LGBT Graphic Novel Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Library and Archives Permanent Collection American Library Services Association Great Graphic Novel for Teens Winner of National Cartoonist Society Reuben Award (Art by Andrew C. "A gay Jew walks into a bar..." Far from being the setup for a tasteless joke, this is actually the start of how the world was introduced to The Beatles. Brian Epstein, a gay Jewish man from Liverpool, saw the young band playing in a basement club and knew right then and there, before anyone else, that they had something to give to the whole world and that he was the man who make that happen. Brian's story became the subject of The Fifth Beatle by Vivek J. Tiwary, Andrew Robinson, and Kyle Baker. This episode gave Greg the chance to follow up with Vivek from their talk last September, and go into further detail about the graphic novel, the film, and comics in general. Find out which cartoonist Vivek studied for guidance on turning music into comics, what an Indian father told him during his trip to Comic Con India in Hyderabad, the thing his historical mentor taught him not to do, which movie was the first Beatles biopic to have actual Beatles music, the comic that taught this only child what having brothers was like, and so much more! Robots From Tomorrow is a weekly comics podcast recorded deep beneath the Earth's surface. You can subscribe to it via iTunes or through the RSS feed at RobotsFromTomorrow.com. You can also follow Mike and Greg on Twitter. This episode is brought to you by Third Eye Comics. Enjoy your funny books.
