It was the Golden Age of the Broadway Musical, and its last masterpiece was Bock and Harnick's Fiddler on the Roof from 1964. Greg Jenner is joined in twentieth-century America by Dr Hannah Thuraisingam Robbins and comedian Desiree Burch to learn all about singer and Hollywood actress Lena Horne. Born into a middle class Black family in New York, a young Lena Horne soon followed in the footsteps of her actress mother and made her début at the famous Cotton Club aged only 16. After making her name as a singer and performer – and following the end of her tumultuous first marriage – Horne transferred to the west coast and bagged a Hollywood contract with MGM. There, she appeared in a number of classic films, including Stormy Weather and Cabin in the Sky. Over the next several years, she would also perform for the troops in the Second World War, fall in love with and marry a white composer and arranger, undertake an international tour, and become one of the most popular nightclub performers of the post-war era. But the racism of segregation-era America would also shape and limit the career of the woman known as ‘the first Black pin-up girl', eventually leading her to the civil rights movement and Black activism in the 1960s. This episode traces Lena's journey from young dancer to Hollywood star and renowned vocalist, along the way exploring her connections with figures including Billie Holliday and Martin Luther King Jr., and the injustice she spent so much of her career fighting against. My podcast "Night Club Musical" is based off me mixing tunes to an imaginary Broadway Musical using the newest/latest "electronic" vocal tracks that try to tell a story.  "Developing Story" hits a little different.  It's a story as old as time. This is 15 loving and heartbreaking short stories told by amazing artists, but combined to tell a complete story using my vision.    Setting: Beginning with the early morning hours capturing the  tranquil and hopeful feeling of morning just before sunrise.  It's a new day full of potential.  Now you're stuck in the moment, remembering when love was new, and giving perspective to your memories and the lasting impact and experiences that new love gave us. I associate the beach with feeling carefree, laughter and love. That's why a lot of Carribbean sounds were chose for this mix.   I also used tracks with a bit of orchestral components for the dramatic effect- like swaying with the wind or going where the waves take you. It gives the overwhelming feelings of being in a passionate relationship and getting lost in the moment, where it makes it easy to be vulnerable- where you surrender your feelings hoping they see the real you, even if it means being exposed and screaming it from the mountaintop. You're on cruise control, but this is where the story takes a turn- think "The Last American Virgin" for those of us that are old enough to remember, but with a complete crescendo ending to the climax.  This mix was made over a one week time period between 3am- 5am.  I wanted to a have a clear mind so everyone could feel the beauty and soundscapes of electronic music and how it tells its Developing Story.

Olivia & Justin look back at a unique event in Elvis's posthumous legacy from 20 years ago - the EPE-endorsed 2005 Broadway show that utilized Elvis's music to tell the story of Chad, a 1950s motorcycling roustabout who travels from town to town bringing rock and roll and romance to small town America, Natalie, the mechanic who falls in love with him, and the numerous other characters brought to life in this show penned by writer Joe DiPietro. Crammed to bursting with more Elvis hits than you can shake a stick at, "All Shook Up" received middling reviews on Broadway at a time not particularly generous to jukebox musicals, yet has since become a standard for smaller theatre companies and schools to license... but how does the story really stack up, either to other musicals, or to Elvis's own musical films? Is Elvis's legacy represented well? Is his music used effectively? We sat down with a filmed version of the original Broadway production, the script and soundtrack album to try to figure it all out. We ran a bit long on Song of the Week so this is being split across two parts, breaking right in the middle of the discussion where the intermission would be in the musical itself. We sit down with David Armstrong — lifelong theater-maker, educator, and author of Broadway Nation: How Immigrant, Jewish, Queer, and Black Artists Invented the Broadway Musical. David's 40-year career as a director, producer, choreographer, and writer has been steeped in creative risk, from his 18 years leading Seattle's Fifth Avenue Theatre (where Hairspray began!) to hosting the Broadway Nation podcast and now teaching Broadway history at the University of Washington. His passion for illuminating the overlooked creators of America's most iconic art form is both inspiring and overdue.
