It's Rj's turn to pick a title to scratch off of his to-be-read list. This week power through yet another amazing title from Vertigo, Unknown Soldier by Joshua Dysart. The story takes place in a war-torn Uganda in the early 2000's and focuses on the crimes committed by Joseph Kony's Lord's Resistance Army. Trigger Warning: some of the subject matter of this book is fairly upsetting. Support Tales From The Short Box by joining our Patreon! patreon.com/BraveNewWorldsComics
We had the pleasure of sitting down and chatting with Joshua Dysart and Tomas Giorello as Bad Idea HQ during San Diego Comic Con 2024. There was plenty of talk about Odinn's Eye and how the collaborative nature of the project elevated the work from both creators. Also some hints at a possible sequel. Plus Tomas chats a bit about the upcoming Planet Death project he is working on for the publisher and Joshua teases his next project with art from David Lapham, Habitat.

Well Josh has been talking about comics since the beginning of this movie podcast, so it was only a matter of time before he hounded one of his favorite writers Joshua Dysart (writer for Harbinger, Goodnight Paradise, Unknown Soldier, Swamp Thing, Brood X and much more), to record an episode. Jesse tried his very best to join the recording for this week but for crazy fandom reasons that only a true fan of the arts would understand, Josh sabotaged him. Don't worry Jesse fan, he will return in another episode. This episode we get a feel for Dysart's taste in action and horror in general. His knowledge on the genres is truly impressive. Then after that we dig into the Abel Ferrara classic, Ms. 45. Trigger warnings for anyone not comfortable with movies that depict sexual assault. It's an important aspect of this story.Being a comic book nerd the episode will fall weave in and out of that medium, and we hope it'll entice you to check out some of the books mentioned in this episode. They're all work a read. Most importantly the two Josh's of this episode will figure out the most important question on everyone's mind... is Ms. 45... A BLOODY GOOD FILM!And remember...
Homelessness is a serious and complex problem around the world and at home. It's also a problem that we have some powerful solutions available to us. This week we reflect on the topic with seminary graduate, homelessness advocate, and recently published author Kevin M. Nye. His new book Grace Can Lead Us Home: A Christian Call To End Homelessness is now available to buy and read and the final sentence in it's Amazon description is: "This thorough and intimate book shows us that from the margins, Jesus has something to teach us all about grace--something that could change the landscape of homelessness entirely if we're ready to hear it." We hope this is eye-opening, challenging, and ultimately encouraging as we all seek to think and live more like Christ in how we see and love those around us who are experiencing difficulties! Dysart discusses his surprising first comic, his formative years, his atypical approach to typical stories, the terror of Swamp Thing, working on the B.P.R.D., artist collaborators, the greatness of Alberto Ponticelli, the origins of Unknown Soldier, respecting subjects, Odinn's Eye, the types of stories he wants to tell, his time at Valiant, Goodnight Paradise, the evolution of comics, and more.
This episode was originally broadcast on September 28, 2017. Charting Josh Dysart's career path in comics isn't easy. The writer has worked for a wide swath of publishers, from Dark Horse to Image to DC Comics to Vertigo to Valiant and points in-between, and gone where few other creators dare to tread, regardless of medium. Dysart has been all over the map, figuratively AND literally. So how do you pick just one topic to focus on when you get the chance to sit down with him? The answer to that question brings you today's episode: a chat that Greg had with Josh Dysart at this past weekend's Baltimore Comic Con. For the first time Joshua Dysart is discussing Odinn's Eye. Jace chats with writer Joshua Dysart about this upcoming project for Bad Idea. Set far back in a time even before most recorded history, Odinn's Eye tells the tale of a young girl who is beset by visions. Visions she believe are a message from Odinn himself that send her and her compatriots on an epic quest. Josh has been inspired by everything from classic fantasy to Sergio Leone westerns in crafting this story. He also mentions his desire to create a large story that feels grand in scope while exploring themes of belief and faith and how those beliefs can impact the real world. Incredible artwork from Tomas Giorello brings it to life, be sure you have pre-ordered so you don't miss it.

Robinson (Illustrator), Kyle Baker (Illustrator) THE FIFTH BEATLE is an award-winning, #1 New York Times best selling graphic novel and forthcoming TV event series recounting the untold true story of Brian Epstein– the brilliant visionary who discovered the Beatles in a cellar in Liverpool, nurtured, protected, and guided them to international stardom, but died painfully lonely at the age of 32. It’s a human story about the struggle to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds—Brian was homosexual when it was a felony to be so, Jewish at a time of anti-Semitism, and from Liverpool when it was just a dingy port town. It’s a story about staggering ambition yielding staggering success, through a desire to change the world by messages of love and peace. A story about being an outsider and trying desperately to belong. A story about speed, triumph, and tragedy. A story whose themes resonate deeply across generations, sexes, and sexual preferences. A story full of dreams and music… The greatest music of all time. Kelly Reichardt and A24's latest frontier drama centres on two friends who take a risk stealing from the wealthiest man in Oregon Territory to start a business and experience some hardship along the way. It's a critical darling that we have some good and bad things to say about, its use of genre and film-making techniques, and its thematic exploration of capitalism, masculinity, and the frontier. On today's episode, Greg chats with writer Joshua Dysart for the first time 'in studio'! The last time he was on the show, back in 2017, the conversation focused on his run as ongoing writer for Swamp Thing. But for this deep-dive talk, the topics range from his latest book with TKO Studios (Goodnight, Paradise), his Eisner-nominated work on Vertigo's Unknown Soldier, his relationship with both books' artist Alberto Ponticelli, how much fear and panic is a part of his work process then and now, why new publisher Bad Idea is actually a good idea, traveling the world, and why Jackie Chan is such a comfort in these trying times! WCA 2019: In Conversation with Joshua Dysart (recorded at WonderCon Anaheim, 30th March 2019) Comic-Con International's sibling convention, WonderCon, has over the years grown and developed into a truly epic event in the North America comic convention calendar, selling out over its entire weekend and bringing thousands of talented creators, publishers, artists, writers, cosplayers, actors and actresses and much more to Anaheim in California. WonderCon has developed and evolved from what was primarily a passive 'experience' delivering show into one which companies and creators can now bring new projects and share updates on brand new content - we have been lucky to have a couple of correspondents visiting the show as Press, catching up with a number of these fresh stories. One such correspondent is Dan Berry (@fatj00) who met up this weekend with esteemed and prolific, award-winning and best-selling comic book writer Joshua Dysart, someone who has had quite the career to date - and still it just keeps growing from strength to strength! He's currently working on TOYO HARADA for Valiant Entertainment, as well as GOODNIGHT PARADISE for fresh new publisher TKO Studios... and it seems that there's a lot more to come down the line. Here, in conversation with Dan, he talks about his current projects and teases about a couple of future books that have most certainly been a long time in the making... Thanks to Joshua for taking time out of his very busy con to talk, and also to Dan Berry for bring the interview to us. Intro Music: 'Punky', bensound.com

On this week's episode of the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER!, we sit down with writer Joshua Dysart to talk about his new book, Goodnight Paradise, from TKO Studios. Goodnight Paradise is a traditional murder-mystery set within the homeless community of southern California. From the book: "When down-and-out Eddie stumbles upon the body of a murdered teenage runaway, he vows to bring her killers to justice. His investigation brings him into the darkest truths of his beachside town, where he finds he may be the only one who cares enough to solve this murder." In our discussion with Joshua, we find out that this story has been years in the making. We get the insights into what brought this all together now. We learn how artist Alberto Ponticelli and colorist Giulia Brusco brought their incredible talents to this project. Now, if you are wanting to check this out, go to the TKO Studios site to pick up this story however you want to read it. You can get it as a trade paperback, as six individual issues, or as a PDF download. You can even read the entire first issue of this series (and all other TKO titles) for FREE! Seriously, try it before you buy it. How can you lose? In addition to our interview, we have our weekly Pick 3 selections for next Wednesday, January 16. We try to guess Cullen's pick this week, and make some interesting choices. We also have an exciting announcement for Planet Comicon coming up in March. This is the second part of this interview, and this part picks up where part 1 leaves off. Make sure to listen to Part 1 in addition to this one!
Joshua Dysart stopped by to discuss his entire landmark run on Harbinger from Valiant Comics. In this first of two parts, we talk about the beginning in Omega Rising, then the "Renegades", "Harbinger Wars", and "Perfect Day" story arcs. Josh talks about Harbinger with his usual insight, humor, and understanding. Our conversation was so massive that we broke it into two parts, so keep an eye out for part 2 next week.
If you have any doubt that Valiant Comics is the best, most fun publisher in comics, this episode will eliminate all doubt. We sat down poolside with the folks from Valiant to talk about their comics, have a drink, and have some fun. Joining us is Joshua Dysart (writer of Harbinger, Harbinger Wars), James Asmus (writer of Quantum & Woody), Hunter Gorrinson (Marketing Manager), Fred Pierce (Publisher), Atom! Freeman (Sales Manager), and Dinesh Shamdasani (CEO and CCO). There's a few slips of adult language and humor in this one as the drinks were flowing, so sit back and enjoy!
Jim Shooter chronicled the psionic tug-of-war between Peter "Sting" Stanchek and the enigmatic Toyo Harada for over 40 issues in the early 90s. Nearly 20 years later, Valiant Entertainment is back, and with it, an all new interpretation of Harbinger. We spoke to series writer Joshua Dysart about his new vision for the iconic struggle between two impossibly powerful men equipped with the full range of telekinetic abilities. In each new issue of the "Renegade" arc, starting with this week's Harbinger #6, latent fans will meet Peter's allies in the war against Harada's ubiquitous corporation and its legion of psionic warriors. We'll also see the Valiant universe as its never been seen before, rendered by a new artist each chapter. And, geez, what a sensational list of artists it is. Things are about to get mental. Writer: Joshua Dysart Penciler: Phil Briones Cover Artist: Mico Suayan, Matthew Clark $3.99/32 pages ALL-NEW ARC! From out of the ashes – RENEGADES! After a crushing defeat at the hands of his would-be mentor, Peter Stanchek lies critically wounded and the only person who can save him is the person that hates him the most – his childhood love Kris Hathaway. As Harada's Eggbreaker strike force closes in, the helpless Peter wonders if he is going to find forgiveness at Kris's door – or unbridled vengeance. But when Faith returns as the superhero she's always dreamed of being, the game is going to change for everyone involved… Music: "The Hive" Deus Ex: Human Revolution (Original Soundtrack) Michael McCann
