Andrew C.M. Cooper: The Ethical Imperative Andrew C.M. Cooper is an executive leader and apologist for compassionate business practices. He led as a history-making first Millennial and Black executive to serve as General Counsel of UPS Airlines, the world's largest logistics airline with over 20,000 employees. His team was essential to the success of Operation Warp Speed, the United States' pandemic vaccine relief effort. He's the author of The Ethical Imperative: Leading with Conscience to Shape the Future of Business*. We all know the power of relationships to help us grow. However, we don't always seek out some of the non-traditional relationships that might help most. In this conversation, Andrew and I discuss three types of people we often overlook that will help us grow. Key Points Many of us invest in organic, traditional relationships. Those are important, but not sufficient in such a dynamic world. Invest 30% of your time into relationships that will add skills, knowledge, or insights you can't develop yourself. Shifters observe well, read between the lines, and help us adapt in uncertain and changing situations. Connectors will help your expand professional affiliations. Having a connector in your corner can be as helpful as being a connector yourself. People who first appear as sharks may be benevolent antagonists. Listen for what others around them say to determine who might challenge you in healthy ways. Andrew C. McKevitt is John D. Winters Endowed Professor of History at Louisiana Tech University. His latest book, Gun Country: Gun Capitalism, Culture, and Control in Cold War America, explores how guns came to occupy a curious place between “constitutional right” and “consumer good,” as the Cold War provided a cultural, political, and material framework by which guns could become the hottest item of the late 20th century. In this conversation, McKevitt shares some of the highlights of his research and provides historical context for the often simplistic “gun control” debate. Andrew C.M. Cooper is the author of the new book, The Ethical Imperative: Leading with Conscience to Shape the Future of Business. He is also an Associate General Counsel and Head of Patent Acquisitions at Meta. While he didn't write The Ethical Imperative as a Meta person, it is still intriguing that one of Zuckerberg's lawyers should be writing a book about corporate ethics, especially since he told me that corporations “should be in the business of social engineering”. But I'm not convinced. In my opinion, the business of social engineering should come from government. The ethical imperative of corporations is serve their investors & customers; while the ethical imperative of government is to serve their citizens. Should we accelerate into the AI future or proceed with caution? Do we even have a choice? From deep-tech disruptors to policymaking under time pressure, a battle over the fate of human civilization is now being waged on multiple fronts: Closed vs. Open, Hardware vs. Software, Safety vs. Ethics: in sum, Order vs. Chaos.Foundation for American Innovation and 8VC hosted a live recording of a conversation with Andrew Côté (Hyperstition founder, a16z scout) and Guillaume Verdon (Extropic founder, effective accelerationism creator), moderated by FAI Senior Economist Samuel Hammond. Andrew, Gil, and Sam discussed their visions for the future, the tradeoffs between centralized and decentralized AI, and the incentives facing founders, technologists, and government regulators.

There's this joke that fusion is always 30 years away. 50 years ago, it was 30 years away. 20 years ago, it was still thirty years away. Today, though… we might be within a decade. We spent the first half of the season on nuclear fission, and the last episode on many of the other energy sources that will play a role in meeting humanity's growing energy demands and building an Age of Miracles. All of them will be critical. But there's a growing chorus of people who believe that if we're going to meet the demand for 3-5x the amount of energy we use today, and do it with clean energy, we're going to need clean energy. And that as we climb the Kardashev Scale – the framework for measuring a civilization's level of technological advancement based on the amount of energy it can use – fusion is going to be our ladder. In today's episode, we'll cover the basics of fusion energy – what it is, how it works, why it matters, how progress is measured, and what the main approaches are. The United States has more guns than people – a condition that is “unprecedented in world history.” Scholars often focus on gun culture, the Second Amendment, or the history of gun safety, duties, and rights. Often, people assume that the number of guns is a natural state – the guns were always there. But were the guns always there? What caused the drastic boom in firearms, and when did it happen? In Gun Country: Gun Capitalism, Culture, and Control in Cold War America (UNC Press, 2023), Dr. Andrew McKevitt investigates how and when the guns arrived – and why so many people bought them. McKevitt argues that what Americans refer to as “gun culture” in the 21st century “emerged out of the intersections of the Cold War and consumer capitalism in the 1950s and 1960s.” A booming consumer market following World War II coupled with a surplus of cheap firearms readily available for American entrepreneurs to resell to citizens laid the groundwork for rampant firearm distribution in the country. War made the United States into a “gun country” but US gun politics – “interwoven with struggles over race and gender” cannot be detached from consumer politics. Gun safety and gun rights organizations both demand consumer regulation and protection. Dr. Andrew C. McKevitt is the John D. Winters Endowed Professor of History at Louisiana Tech University. His previous book, Consuming Japan: Popular Culture and the Globalizing of 1980s America (2017) was published by the University of North Carolina Press and he received the Stuart L. Durba is an artist that lives and creates in the Mission San Jose District of Fremont. She had her first experience with art as a child in India; but like many others like her, she pursued another direction in her early adult years. However, as a young adult, she rediscovered her love of art through the encouragement of her husband and a teacher she visited in India. Today, Durba creates with various mediums and even offers art lessons for local children. She enjoys geometric abstract painting. Beginning April 1 (and this is not a joke), Downtown Niles will have a new and greatly improved Farmers' Market. Fremont has had a few regular and irregular farmers' markets around the city. Previously, the Niles market, which has been open on Saturday mornings and early afternoons, has been a little lacking. Although, it had produce options and local artisans each week, it needed something more. The Niles Main Street Association saw that this was a need and found a solution. They brought in an organization that is a family business with experience and a good repoire in other communities for hosting wonderful markets. The NMSA was able to secure this Bay Area family organization so that we can have an amazing market in Niles now too. This conversation is the introduction of a new podcast in Fremont called the Niles' Podcast. It is led by Krysten of the NMSA and the Flying A. She talks with the owners and operators of the new farmers' market. This conversation should inspire you to make definite plans to come and enjoy the new Niles Farmers' Market. Following in her father's footsteps, Mickelina has been racing cars for the last two years and is looking forward to her third season. Mark Monico started racing when he was very young and even enjoyed racing go-karts at the historic Baylands race track here in Fremont. Years ago, Mark was diagnosed with cancer, and it was through that experience that he saw the need to raise money to help fund ongoing research in that field of study. Mark started Race for Research several decades ago and has been very successful in his fund raising endeavors. For various reasons, Mark found racing to be unsustainable as a way of life and the opportunities to raise funds for St. Jude research became more unrealistic as well. However, in the summer of 2022, Mickelina brought new life and energy to Race for Research and it was reborn. Race for Research will be hosting a special Celebrity Waiter Dinner to again help raise funds for St. Judes and cancer research. Jim Garrity reports on this troubling conduct and surmises that it happens a lot more than many realize.
