Episode 48: What We Can Learn From AnxietyWe're accustomed to thinking of anxiety as something undesirable. But what if anxiety could actually be an effective tool, teaching us how to take appropriate risks, manage setbacks, and build resilience? That's the premise of Dr. Tracy Dennis Tiwary's book Future Tense: Why Anxiety is Good for You Even Though it Feels Bad.Guest: Dr. Tracy Dennis-TiwaryResources, Transcript, and Expanded Show NotesIn This Episode:“Anxiety is apprehension about the uncertain future. So what that means is that when we're anxious, we're not actually in the moment. We're actually becoming mental time travelers into the future. And what anxiety both signals and helps us do really effectively, is picture that future. There is potential threat or peril. That is, you know, that's why it feels bad. We're kind of sitting up and paying attention. But at the same time, when we're anxious, there is also still positive possibility.” (6:22)“You don't go from zero to a hundred. You start with little 10 pound weights. And it's the same for this emotional endurance. We have to think of not psychological or mental health so much as mental fitness. I just think it sets us up, when it comes especially to anxiety and major anxiety disorders, major depressive disorder, substance use disorders or these kinds of struggles. Let's think about fitness, because we can build these skills for people, we can help them. But you don't do it by going from zero to 100.” (17:57)“Part of, I think, the gift and the problem of the parenting space right now, if I may say, is that we have this sort of parenting advice industrial complex, right? Where I feel that, as wonderful as the advice out there is, it's created this culture in which we feel like we have to check off 100 out of 100 boxes on the good parenting checklist. And if we don't, we're a bad parent, we're letting down our kid.” (29:06)Related Episodes: 47, 35, 19, 18, 16, 11, 5, 3 Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The end of summer and the arrival of fall marks a time of transition. Vacation time ends and school begins. No matter your age, for many of us, these kinds of transitions mean change, and change can give rise to anxiety. We all have anxiety. It's part of being human. The question is whether we can transform that uncomfortable feeling of being anxious into a positive? To help us think through, and better manage, our anxiety, House Calls is re-sharing a conversation with Dr. Tracey Dennis-Tiwary.    Dr. Tracy Dennis-Tiwary, author of “Future Tense: Why Anxiety is Good For you (Even Though It Feels Bad),” and a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Hunter College, says harnessing our anxiety can help us shape the future, instead of making it something, well…to be anxious about. In this episode of House Calls, the Surgeon General and Dr. Dennis-Tiwary talk about concrete ways many people can get through anxious times with a slower pulse, and calmer mind, and a clearer vision. Dr. Dennis-Tiwary calls it The Three Ls and she says anyone can learn to do it.    (02:50)  What is anxiety and why does it exist?  (04:57)  Stress, anxiety, or fear: What's the difference?  (06:13)  Anxiety or anxiety disorder?  (07:58)  How does anxiety manifest?  (11:19)  Is mental health the health crisis of our time?  (14:13)  Managing anxiety with the Three L's.  (18:12)  Why should we befriend our anxiety?  (19:13)  How can we help children with their anxiety?  (31:27)  Can you become an emotional ninja?  (33:13)  What drives our anxiety?  (39:11)  Where do anxiety and social media intersect?  (45:21)  Can we prioritize mental health?     For more conversations, visit www.surgeongeneral.gov/housecalls.    We'd love to hear from you! We all experience anxiety as an emotion. It's part of being human. But can we transform that uncomfortable emotion into a positive? Doing so might require dispelling some common notions about anxiety and learning to counter our own gut reactions in those moments that induce sweaty palms or stage fright. Dr. Tracy Dennis-Tiwary, author of “Future Tense: Why Anxiety is Good For you (Even Though It Feels Bad),” and a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Hunter College, says harnessing our anxiety can help us shape the future, instead of making it, well…something to be anxious about. In this episode of House Calls, the Surgeon General and Dr. Dennis-Tiwary talk about concrete ways many people can get through anxious times with a slower pulse, and calmer mind, and a clearer vision. Dr. Dennis-Tiwary calls it “The Three L's” and she says anyone can learn to do it. (3:09) Why does anxiety exist? (5:16) Stress, anxiety, or fear: What's the difference? In your most anxious moments, do you find yourself stopping and saying, "Oh, my anxiety is back! What a useful and clarifying tool this is. I'm so grateful I feel this way right now!" While that sounds outlandish at best, you may reconsider your position after listening to this conversation. Dr. Tracy Dennis-Tiwary (anxiety researcher & author, psychology and neuroscience professor, and founder of Wise Therapeutics) is here to challenge the idea of anxiety-as-a-disease. That instead of treating anxiety like a sickness to be eradicated, we should look to it as an evolved advantage that protects us and strengthens our creative and productive powers. She backs her thesis with both the latest research and her personal experience, showing the power that can come from redefining what anxiety is and what it can teach us.

Dr Dennis-Tiwary is in praise of anxiety. She teaches people how to sit with the bad feelings that accompany anxiety by trying to listen to what it is telling us, leverage from the knowledge to understanding to find new solutions and then let go. For example, if you wake in the middle of the night, worried about something that happened during the day. Instead of lying awake and ruminating on these thoughts until they become catastrophic. Take a deep breath, listen to what the thoughts are, sit with the feeling, and then leverage from them. What are they telling you? For example, you may have not finished a task that needs completing or ignored someone that needs your attention. Try, coming back to the present tense and let go of these thoughts and take action on what they are teaching you. Dr Dennis-Tiwary insights offer a new lens about how to think about anxiety. Imagine leveraging anxiety to find a new approach to solve the underlying problems causing the anxious feelings. From Dr. Tracy Dennis-Tiwary website:Tracy A. Dennis-Tiwary, Ph.D. is a professor of psychology and neuroscience, Director of the Emotion Regulation Lab, and Co-Executive Director of the Center for Health Technology at Hunter College, where the mission is to connect researchers, community stakeholders, and technology innovators to bridge the healthcare gap. She has been featured throughout the media, including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, ABC, CBS, CNN, NPR, The Today Show, and Bloomberg Television.Future Tense: Why Anxiety is Good For You (Even Though it Feels Bad)Future Tense argues for the radical idea that anxiety is a feature of being human, not a bug. When we tap into our anxiety instead of attack it like an illness, we realize that human anxiety evolved to not only be protective, but to build our creative capacity to be productive. Anxiety achieves this by making us into time travelers, propelling us into future thinking, where we are smarter, more focused, and more hopeful in the face of challenge. This book details how – and why – we should adopt a new mindset about anxiety – a fresh set of beliefs and insights that allow us to use anxiety as information so we can leverage it rather than be overwhelmed by it. I share real-world examples and stories combined with the latest research in psychology, neuroscience, genetics, biology, and sociology. This book celebrates the lives of people who are using anxiety to their advantage and with the goal of making the world a better place. The best solutions in the world won't stick if our view of anxiety unintentionally accelerates it. Support the show

Anxiety. It is the only emotion my body believes is truly necessary for me to experience at three o’clock in the morning. To be sure I’d rather be sleeping. Usually how I respond to this experience is by listening to audiobooks or podcasts until I fall back asleep. I may get through more audiobooks that way, but it’s hard for me to look at that and imagine anxiety as anything other than a burden. I’ve recently been rethinking that relationship with anxiety. And in particular, one book has helped me start to change some of my beliefs about how anxiety works and what a healthy relationship to it might look like. That book is called Future Tense by my guest today, Tracy Dennis-Tiwary. Tracy is a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Hunter College, where she directs the Emotion Regulation Lab. She’s spent the last couple decades as a psychologist studying anxiety, particularly in clinical populations and children. In her book, Tracy argues that though anxiety is unpleasant it actually plays a crucial role in our daily lives. What exactly is the benefit of anxiety? Well, here’s how I’d put it: The majority of our emotional lives is concerned with the present moment. Our brains are designed to get what we want right now, not to delay gratification until some unknown future date. The tension here is that while our emotions tend to orient us toward the moment, so much of our progress as individuals—as a civilization—depends on doing hard work now so our future selves or generations can enjoy its benefits. Anxiety is the emotional bridge between our present selves and our future outcomes. It is the emotion that makes us care about what rewards or punishments will receive in the future and motivates us to take action now, in order to put ourselves in the best position for success later on. Without that emotional bridge, it’s a lot easier to disregard what’s going to happen in the future. Anxiety is the only part of our present selves that has a true emotional investment in how our future selves will feel. With this in mind, the appropriate relationship to have with anxiety is not to eliminate it, but to channel it. Anxiety can be incredibly motivating. And at a certain level, it’s healthy. Throughout this conversation, we talk about the give and take of anxiety—but we also talk about how this fits into a larger conversation about how we’re so often taught in modern life that what we should do is eliminate bad things. We should take the presence of bad things as a negative signal. We should be able to remove inefficiency, unhappiness, and all sorts of negative outcomes and emotions from our lives. (In my essay on Heart of Darkness, I call refer to this as “Being loyal to the nightmare of your choosing.”)But this is based on false model, an inaccurate story about how life works and what it means to be human. This is the story of anxiety that we cover in this conversation. Engaging with it and not running from it is part of the larger story of what Tracy called the “hard work of being human.”Tracy’s book is “Future Tense: Why anxiety is good for you, even though it feels bad.” It is out now. In today's episode Angela is in conversation with Dr Tracy Dennis-Tiwary, author of 'Future Tense.: Why Anxiety is Good For You (Even Though it Feels Bad). Tracy A. Dennis-Tiwary, Ph.D. is a researcher, entrepreneur, and author of the book Future Tense: Why Anxiety is Good for You (Even Though it Feels Bad), Harper Wave, 2022. She is a professor of psychology and neuroscience, Director of the Emotion Regulation Lab, and Co-Executive Director of the Center for Health Technology at The City University of New York, where the mission is to connect researchers, community stakeholders, and technology innovators to bridge the healthcare gap.  Tracy highlights that anxiety has got an (undeserved) bad press: because it feels uncomfortable, we should get rid of it. 'Anxiety as disease' - an idea that has been propagated by the mental health profession for years, is setting us up to failure and stops us from engaging with the useful aspects and gifts that anxiety has to offer us. There is evidence now that the  disease model of mental illness does not work. In the past everyone talked about stress; now we talk about anxiety.Tracy talks about parenting children effectively. Often parents assume that their children are fragile. The opposite is true: children have antifragility.  If you don't strain muscles they will atrophy. The same is true for emotions. Children need to learn the skills to sit with their anxiety and other emotions that they may struggle with.Tracy also discusses the difference between being a perfectionist and a pursuer of excellencism. Excellencism involves setting yourself high standards but not getting overly frustrated if these standards are not met. The conversation ends with Tracy describing the three key principles that you can take away from making anxiety your ally.As PAs Founder and CSO of Wise Therapeutics,  Tracy A. Anxiety is pervasive, but not all anxiety is bad.  That's what Tracy Dennis-Tiwary, Ph.D. has determined after 20 years of research.  Anxiety is not an illness to be avoided. Anxiety is an emotion that can serve us. That's why all the medications and self help books continue to fail us. (quick note - anxiety disorders are real, but anxiety is not the same thing as an anxiety disorder.)   LINKS: READ Future Tense: Why Anxiety Is Good for You (Even Though It Feels Bad) https://www.drtracyphd.com/future-tense More about Tracy Dennis-Tiwary, Ph.D. https://www.drtracyphd.com/   SPONSORS: Spartan Up podcast is brought to you by Wild Health www.wildhealth.com Wondering which diet is right for you? Anxiety used to be understood as something you felt, not something you had – at least that's how I understood it until the point in life where I just couldn't grasp the bigness of everything and couldn't shake the sense of impending doom. So I kept productive and outran those feelings, which made things better… until it didn't. Running can't solve those problems. As Dr. Tracy Dennis-Tiwary puts it, “The key to feeling good is knowing how to feel bad.” She's the author of https://www.drtracyphd.com/future-tense (Future Tense: Why Anxiety Is Good for You (Even Though It Feels Bad)), and if you're anxious about your anxiety then she's someone you need to listen to.
