In this episode of Just Get a Real Job, we're joined by award-winning composer and songwriter Drew Gasparini. Known for his dynamic contributions to musical theatre and television, Drew's work includes the Broadway adaptation of The Karate Kid and the hit musical I Could Use a Drink. His latest show, We Aren't Kids Anymore comes to the Savoy Theatre on April 28th.We discuss:
Marc Summers believes that if he didn't have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), he wouldn't be where he is today. He looks back into the humble beginnings of his diverse career, his struggles with severe OCD, battles with cancer, and his resilience that ultimately defined his career journey. Marc highlights the unique aspects of “Double Dare”, how he landed the job, and his creative input in the physical challenges and the show's distinctive nose that's supposedly modeled after his own. His off-Broadway show, “The Life and Slimes of Marc Summers” written by Alex Brightman and featuring music by Drew Gasparini, showcases his life, including the various challenges he faced throughout, from a car crash where he broke every bone in his face to the stigma of having obsessive-compulsive disorder on his career. It also touched on his early career as a magician and comedian, his experiences at the Comedy Store alongside legends like Dave Letterman and Robin Williams, and the supportive role his wife played in his life and career for over 50 years. He discusses the show's exploration of overcoming obstacles and the theme of perseverance–traits that Marc takes pride in. Director Chad Rabinovitz and composer Drew Gasparini talk about their collaboration on "The Life and Slimes of Marc Summers", including the creative process and thematic elements behind bringing the show to fruition. Chad reminisces about his childhood admiration for Marc, his dream of participating in "Double Dare", and the journey from being a fan to collaborating with Marc, Drew, and Alex Brightman in creating and directing the show. Drew shares how a summer stock production of "Grease" brought him and Marc together, the immersive nature of the production, intertwining the nostalgic elements of "Double Dare" with heartfelt storytelling about Marc's life, and his unique perspective as the composer of the show. Marc Summers is a TV personality, comedian, game show host, producer, and talk show host known from the original “Double Dare” game show on Nickelodeon, and as the host of “Unwrapped” on the Food Network. He was the executive producer for Food Network's “Dinner: Impossible” and “Restaurant: Impossible', and now he has an off-Broadway, almost one-man show called “The Life and Slimes of Marc Summers” written by Alex Brightman, and with music by Drew Gasparini. Who's excited to hear our theme song, “STFU Alan" sung as an Aria!? Well, tune in because this week's guest, Lauren “Nightingale” Jelencovich does it and it's ah-maz-ing. She gives previous “STFU Alan” composers, James Harkness, Drew Gasparini, and Josh Breckenridge a run for their money, that's for sure! The incredible list of achievements Lauren Jelencovich has under her belt is, quite frankly, astounding! From winning Star Search to being the featured singer on tour with Yanni (where she earned the nickname “Nightingale”), this lady is the real deal. While still in high school, Lauren won the grand prize on Ed McMahon's Star Search. She is an incredible singer whose style is a mix of pop, musical theatre and opera. By age 20, she had performed at Carnegie Hall in New York and at the MGM Grand Las Vegas. She's performed privately for Andrea Bocelli, is world traveler having visited over 60 countries, has recently worked with Project Runway's Isaac Mizrahi, graduate from the prestigious Manhattan School of Music, and is currently on a world tour with Yanni as his featured vocalist. Once again, hosts, Heather and Alan have way more fun than should be allowed chatting with Lauren about the chance encounters she dove into, head first, and how they have helped her manifest the musical career of her dreams. The release of her new album is slightly delayed but keep an eye out for its release (we promise to update and share the information here as well). You can learn more about Lauren on her website and be sure to follow her on Instagram. She also has a killer TikTok game going (and a viral song!) so find her there as well. Hell, Lauren even has a Wikipedia page. Listen to Lauren perform with Yanni here. It's breathtaking! Make sure to follow this podcast everywhere you find podcasts, leave a rating and a review, and slip into our Instagram DMs at @wasitchance. More about Heather via @vickeryandco on Instagram, @Braveheather on TikTok, and listen to The Brave Files More about Alan via @theatre_podcast on Instagram and listen to The Theatre Podcast with Alan Seales EPISODE TAKEAWAYS If there's a song in your heart, listen to it! You never know what's going to happen. Throw your hat in the ring and try things. Try it all!!! If you have a unique talent, don't hide from it, put it out there. Lauren sings the most amazing rendition of STFU Alan - As an Opera Aria. Heather may or may not have turned it into her phone ring tone (ok. She did). You are not required to pick just one lane or specialty. Embrace all of your talents. Technology has made it possible for anyone with talent to put themselves out there and peruse their dreams. Don't hide your talents, share them with the world. Even the most successful people have limiting voices and fear that they must work through. I'd you never do “it” you'll never know if it was good enough. Open your arms to all of the opportunities Your “chances” increase when you have a wonderful network. Matt Doyle is a Broadway treasure. Is there anything worse than seeing the friends you grew up with not age at all, meanwhile you feel like you've aged 4 times faster than most humans?? That's how I feel when I saw Matt on the other end of this interview. I've known him since we were 12 and shortly after our adolescents he became a Broadway staple starring in shows such as Spring Awakening, War Horse, Book of Mormon, and so much more. He's about to make his return to Broadway in the highly anticipated revival of COMPANY! On this episode we play “Who would you Squid Game first?” - we play a rousing game of FMK, and we talk about the very wrong casting choices we were stuck with as teenagers. What lullabies did we listen to as kids? Do we remember how WEIRD the children's stories we were read as kids were? Does Tony nominee indeed have a dog fighting ring in her basement? Will I ever finally get Jonathan Groff to pay attention to the nonsensical beef I'm trying to start with him? WHO KNOWS! But we talk about all of this and more on this week's episode featuring guests Caitlin Kinnunen and performer/writer Ryan Bauer-Walsh. From our discussion about their upcoming project THE RAINBOW LULLABY to our heated exchange about whether we'd rather have fingers as nipples or nipples as fingers, it was a laugh a minute with these two. Last week we spoke to a student of mine. This week we are talking to a mentor of mine! An amazing man with a storied life and career in both the arts and corporate America. He's an entrepreneur and a business owner. He is the reason I am here writing musicals today because it was his support and believe in me that kept me in NYC… and now look at me! I'm hot shit! Today's guest is a little different than our typical lineup of household names from show biz. She is a 16 year old actor, singer, and writer who is just getting her start in the industry. She's not a household name YET, but mark my words, she *will* be. Her name is Elisa Martini and I've had the great privilege and honor of being her coach, teacher, and mentor over the last couple years. The reason I had her on the podcast was because there is something remarkable about her drive and passion toward all things “the arts.” I think it is important for young people and vets of the business alike to hear the goal setting, hard-working ambition of this young up and comer. It's INSPIRING! Listen up world, and get ready for a star on the rise! Ann is one of the most persevering artists in the business, and she time out of her vacation to talk to my dumb ass! It was a joy to catch, and it will be an even bigger joy to LISTEN! A great hang, an absolute bad ass, and someone I had the great privilege of speaking with! We all fell in LOVE with Lesli when she starred as Mrs. Wormwood in the hit Broadway musical Matilda, but did you know that this bi-coastal bad ass thinks me, Drew Gasparini, could be a musical theatre sex symbol?!?! "I only ever want to be Ben Harper famous." Drew Gasparini is an award winning musical theatre songwriter and performer. Currently he is writing the scores for a number of new stage musicals including the Broadway-bound adaptation of The Karate Kid, an adaptation of Night Shift for Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures, and an adaptation of the Ned Vizzini novel/film It's Kind of a Funny Story for Universal Theatrical Group (book by Alex Brightman), among others. Hall for Super Bowl LIII. He has released several of his own albums, and on January 13th, Drew launched his new podcast "Now We're Talking with Drew Gasparini" on the Broadway Podcast Network. Born and raised in southern California, his father a drummer and his mother a music teacher, Drew recalls that “music was like water, food, and oxygen” in his household. But it was ultimately his music teacher in high school who, after listening to some of his original songs (which he began writing when he was 12), challenged him to work harder and inspired him to dedicate his life to songwriting. Drew chronicles the journey which took him from living out of his car in LA, to writing his first musical and moving to New York City; where a few years later, he put up a concert of his songs starring Titus Burgess, Jeremy Jordan, and others. He shares that some of the best education he’s had has come from failing in New York, and reiterates that there are going to be down moments for all artists, but if you love it, you have to stick with it. Drew has signed 5 contracts for projects which were Broadway bound but never made it, which he says only makes him hungrier - “I want to write something that’s left behind in a big way.” This dream could just be on the horizon, as Drew recollects landing his current big project - writing the score for the Broadway bound adaptation of Karate Kid. We alllllll love Alex Brightman for the work he’s done in the industry. And yes, we toooootally get that he’s a two-time Tony Nominee for his roles in School of Rock and Beetlejuice on Broadway. But I bet you didn’t know where he grew up, or that his parents had to sit him down for some VERY blunt advice at a young age. Of course we love Alex for his work leading up to his Tony nominations in shows like Matilda and Wicked, but did you know that Alex Brightman and I spent 3 days together traveling cross country by Amtrak?! Like, I KNOW we can’t get enough of Alex’s appearances on TV collaborating with the likes of John Mulaney and Richard Kind, but why don’t we ever talk about his obsession with gambling, or the band he was in in high school?! Thankfully I was able to coax my buddy Brighty onto the podcast so we could deep dive into our friendship, his childhood, his unflappable younger brother Jesse, the ill-fated SitCom(s) we wrote during our formidable years, and MUCH MORE! Alex Brightman has been seen on Broadway in Glory Days, Wicked, Big Fish, Matilda, and has two Tony nominations for starring as the leads in School of Rock, and Beetlejuice. As a writer Brightman is currently developing two new musicals with Drew Gasparini entitled The Whipping Boy and It's Kind of a Funny Story (based on the novels of the same name). Brightman made an appearance on Impractical Jokers and In October 2019, it was announced that Brightman will be joining the cast of the Billy Crystal helmed comedy film Here Today. “The Dramaturg” premiered on February 19th, 2013. It was written by Larry Shaw, and directed by Bryan Goluboff, both newcomers to Smash as of season 2. The viewership was 3.29 million viewers, which was 1.16 million down from the previous episode two weeks prior. We saw new material from both of our up-and-coming shows this episode! We were treated to a brand-new song from Bombshell, called “Our Little Secret” written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Whitman, and a preview of a song from currently-unnamed-show-soon-to-be-known-as Hit List, called “Good For You” written by Drew Gasparini. The episode also featured Megan Hilty singing a cover of Robyn’s ”Dancing On My Own,” as well as snippets of The Wiz’s “Soon As I Get Home” sung by Jennifer Hudson, and Katherine McPhee’s mini-rendition of “They Just Keep Moving The Line.” Eileen demands that Tom and Julia meet with a dramaturg named Peter Gilman to make the quick fixes she thinks the show needs. Tom thinks Peter could be a shepherd for their play, but Julia is afraid dramaturgs are parasites especially when he reads her for focusing on DiMaggio instead of putting the sex appeal into Marilyn herself. Derek knows that new musicals take years to develop, but needs something now, something big. So he’s burning the candle from three ends: staging a Bombshell number for producers, scheming with Veronica Moore to get his job back at The Wiz and agreeing to meet Kyle and Jimmy about the plot that goes around their great songs. Ivy talks Smash’s real casting director Bernie Telsey into letting her audition for a revival of Liaisons, but feels like she has little chance of booking up again “real names” like Jen Damiano and Jessie Mueller. When she stops by Bombshell rehearsal to ask Derek for advice, she realizes that she needs to start “dancing on her own.” Tom helps her to realize the Liaisons role is more like Marilyn than she imagined, but the boost helps her win the part. Inspired or in spite of Peter Gillman, Julia writes a non-PG number for Marilyn and JFK called “Our Little Secret.” It loses Derek a job on The Wiz but Eileen calls it the perfect direction for Bombshell. Jimmy is his usual angry-white-man self, seemingly pissed off at every opportunity Karen and Kyle provide him to share their show with the world. When they finally meet, Jimmy describes the story of their show: a young man who hates the world but has a treasure trove of mind blowing music. Stealing his songs to catapult her to fame, a female fling gets addicted to the fame his music provides - and he lets her even though his love will destroy him. Derek is intrigued enough to pound beers with the team, and they begin their work on the new musical... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Drew Gasparini, a composer/lyricist/all-around awesome guy, joined Brian in New York City this past weekend to talk about song writing, musical theater and the creative process.Drew discusses the recent re-release party for his 2009 album, “I Could Use a Drink,” and what it was like to revisit songs he had written 10–15 years ago. How, exactly, did Simon's mom take that message in “I'm A Little Bit”?This leads to a greater discussion about the role of the writer in making their characters understandable, which dovetails into a long discussion about the musical adaptation of “It's Kind of a Funny Story” that Drew is writing with his collaborator and best friend, Alex Brightman. Drew discusses how he and Alex came to the project, what their writing process is like, and how you take a powerful novel like Ned Vizzini's and adapt it to the stage.Drew talks at length about his collaboration process, why he's so addicted to the creative lifestyle, and how he structures his work schedule to make sure his momentum is rarely broken.Drew GaspariniDrew on TwitterDrew on InstagramI Could Use a DrinkIt's Kind of a Funny StoryThe World Doesn't Require You by Rion Amilcar ScottA Dream About Lightning Bugs: A Life of Music and Cheap Lessons by Ben FoldsA Man Called Ove by Fredrik BackmanSubscribe:Apple PodcastsOvercastGoogle PlayRSS

Sonoma’s Transcendence Theatre Company opened its seventh season of “Broadway Under the Stars” in Jack London State Park with Stairway to Paradise, the first of four staged concert events scheduled this year. The company takes performers with Broadway, touring company, film and television experience and creates an original themed musical revue around them. This year’s theme is ‘Every Moment Counts’ and director/choreographer Tony Gonzalez has designed 20+ production numbers full of memorable moments. Along with Broadway show tunes, the Transcendence play list includes a mix of recent and past pop hits, classic rock, and specialty numbers. They’re all done ‘Broadway style’ and occasionally with a twist. It often works well, but sometimes it doesn’t. The first act ran the gamut from numbers from Sunday in the Park with George, South Pacific, The Wiz, and Victor/Victoria to “Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard” and “Feelin’ Groovy” by Paul Simon. Highlights included a recreation of the famous Judy Garland/Barbra Streisand duet of “Get Happy/Happy Days are Here Again” with Courtney Markowitz and Shaleah Adkisson, Christine Lavin’s popular “Air Conditioner” song, also done by Adkisson with Tim Roller, and a large-scale production number of “Blue Skies” with the entire company led by Joey Khoury singing and dancing to the Irving Berlin classic. In an amusing bit that allowed the performers (and audience) a break, the cast played a round of ‘Transcendence Family Feud’ with contestants pulled from the crowd. The act ended on a local note with a performance of “Everything”, a tribute song written by Sonoma County songwriters Mark Beynon and Joe Label and the Transcendence version of “Oklahoma!” which morphed the Rogers and Hammerstein classic into “Oh, Sonoma!” The second act included numbers from Cabaret, Into the Woods, and The Sound of Music mixed with Justin Timberlake, Van Halen and, in the evening’s one clear misstep, Don McLean’s “American Pie”. Sorry guys, but perky, Cheshire cat-like smiling performers singing “This’ll be the day that I die” just doesn’t work for me. It actually came off a little creepy. Things snapped back with a jaunty Michael Linden performing Drew Gasparini’s “A Little Bit” and large-scale numbers with Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling” and Van Halen’s “Right Now” before concluding with “Finale B’ from Rent. Dress in layers, pack a picnic, indulge in some wine or food purchased from local food trucks and vintners serving on-site, then sit back and enjoy a unique north bay entertainment experience. 'Stairway to Paradise' runs Friday through Sunday through July 1 at Jack London State Historic Park in Glen Ellen. Doors open for picnicking at 5pm; the show starts at 7:30pm. Have you ever seen someone perform and thought, "This guy is going to be a household name one day!" That was what I thought when I saw Drew Gasparini's tour de force show, "Crazy Just Like Me" at a community theater in Marin County in California. A songwriter of many genres, this quadruple-threat marvel wrote an outstanding musical score, co-wrote the book, and acted and sung in the lead role. I've seen him three times at Joe's Pub in Manhattan, where he's brought on more performers in a night than you've seen in a year, who bring his many songs to life. He plays piano and guitar like it's nobody's business, and his gorgeous little sisters and his mom are about as talented as he is. Trust me, you will be hearing a lot more from Drew Gasparini.
