10 years ago Marlon James published 'A Brief History of Seven Killings' his bestselling novel which would go onto be awarded the Booker Prize. Born in Jamaica in 1970 his parents shared with him their passion for poetry and Shakespeare – but Marlon preferred to be in his room reading comics like X-Men...the mutant group who went onto inspire him to write his 'Black Leopard, Red Wolf' trilogy. For those who haven't already read it, A Brief History of Seven Killings' is broken up into 5 sections, each named after a different piece of music, and music continues to play a prominent role in his writing life. In his acceptance speech for the Booker Prize back in 2015 he heralded the likes of Bob Marley for championing Carribean voices saying he was: “The first to recognise that the voice coming out our mouths was a legitimate voice for fiction and for poetry”. With all that in mind we were fascinated to know what Marlon James's Inheritance Tracks would be.Inherited: 54/46 Was My Number by Toots and the Maytals Passed on: Equinox by John ColtraneProducer: Ben Mitchell

Nigel Woodberry is a son, a brother, and -- among many other things -- an awesome dude. He's also the host of the Beers with Nigel podcast, though, and he was kind enough to swing by and record Episode #68 with me.We talked a good bit about his podcast, a little bit about his background and his many lives, but we also talked about a few of his favorite records, and they are these:Van Halen's 1984 (1984)Spellbound, Joe Sample (1989)Babyface's Tender Lover (1989)Reasonable Doubt, Jay-Z (1996)Drake's Nothing Was the Same (2013)So, please check out our conversation, and please check out Beers with Nigel. PlaylisteBent Fabricius-Bjerre (f. 1924) Peggy Lee: The Alley Cat Song (1963)Juliette Gréco (f. 1927): Je hais les dimanches (1951)Ennio Morricone (f. 1928): Chi Mai (1971)Little Richard (f. 1932): Lucille (1957)Simeon Oliver Coxe III (f. 1938) Silver Apples: Oscillations (1968)Bill Withers (f. 1938): Lean on Me (1972)Tony Allen (f. 1940): Ise Nla (2005)Chad Stuart (f. 1941) Chad & Jeremy: Sunstroke (1968)Toots Hibbert (f.1942) Toots & The Maytals: 54-46 Was My Number (1973)Phil May (f. 1944) The Pretty Things: She’s a Lover (1970) Peter Green (f. 1946) Fleetwood Mac: Man of the World (1969)John Prine (f. 1946): Speed of the Sound of Loneliness (1986) Florian Schneider (f. 1947) Kraftwerk: Radioactivity (1975)Genesis P-Orridge (f. 1950) Throbbing Gristle: Hot on the Heels of Love (1979)Hal Willner (f. 1956) Elvis Costello: Weird Nightmare (1992)Andy Gill (f. 1956) Gang of Four: At Home He’s a Tourist (1979)David Roback (f. 1958) Mazzy Star: Fade into You (1993)Gabi Delgado-López (f. 1958) Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft/D.A.F.: Der Mussolini (1981)MF DOOM (f. 1971) Madvillain: All Caps (2004) Justin Townes Earle (født 1982, overdosis), 38: The Saint of Lost Causes (2019)

Follow Mixtapes With Mike on Instagram here...https://www.instagram.com/mixtapeswithmikepodcast/ This week I sat down with artist Craig Davison. I first discovered his work in a little gallery in a retail village called Swinfen Hall. There were a fair few chintzy gift shops selling stuff your mum would love and an overpriced coffee shop but there was also a gallery. I was blown away by the style of his paintings, he essentially paints kids pretending to be their heroes with the shadow of that hero looming over them in the ether. There were also some pencil sketches, one of which was of Robin Williams which I still regret not buying there and then. Doing this podcast has been so much fun and recently I've been lucky enough to speak to some bonafide heroes of mine, I never thought in a million years I get Craig on and he was such a lovely bloke to talk to. If you enjoy listening half as much as I liked making this, please pass it on, leave a review and help me reach more people. Thanks Check out Craig's work here...https://craigdavisonart.co.uk https://www.instagram.com/craigdavison_art/?hl=en Listen to Craig's mixtape on Spotify here...https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0HLu14oAP0cqUSm5WknlG4?si=mXrsp6H8QNaoHIhP0VfwsQListen to Craig's mixtape on Apple Music here...https://music.apple.com/gb/playlist/mixtapes-with-mike-craig-davison/pl.u-XkD03LEFvvWZ9Tracklist...Goons of Hazzard  4:25 Dead KennedysI Fell  4:14 The Handsome FamilyThe Daily Heavy  7:50 Oh SeesGoo Goo Muck  3:06 The CrampsDown the Coast Highway  4:24 Stan Ridgway Gigantor  2:30 The Dickies54-46 Was My Number  3:24 Toots & The MaytalsDudley  3:42 Yeah Yeah YeahsSome Mutts (Can't Be Muzzled)  4:23 Amyl and The SniffersSheep Tick  4:47 Young Knives Barbarians Alternative  0 2  As always the music discussed is played below the conversation as I believe that all musicians should be paid for what they do.
