The 1990's were the hey day of music video channel MTV and the shameless cross promotion between the record companies and Movie Studios. The era when a catchy song, stylish video, and charismatic artist could take a song from a hit movie all the way to the top of the pop charts. Hollywood had a formula that that worked, and at the time it didn't include the brown skin son to Indian immigrants from England...signed to the competition. So the geniuses at the label came up with a solution, it was a half baked idea, but it just might work. The blizzard continues in "Murder Love (B-side)" In the summer of 1993 there was no reggae song making people dance like the hip hip infused dancehall club banger titled Informer, and no reggae singer tearing up the international pop charts like a 24 year old white reggae rapper form Toronto Canada Darren Kenneth O Brian, better known as Snow. When the label decides to produce the follow up album in Kingston, The stage was set for an Irish hoodlum and his gang of thugs to descend onto a 3rd World country to wreak havoc. Enabled by managers and record companies willing to give him anything, and do whatever it takes to get a hit. The question is what is Henry K willing to do? This week we are joined by a legend, an empress, an icon of reggae. In an industry dominated by male voices, Marcia Griffiths is about to enter her 60th year as a trailblazing vocalist, songwriter, performer and collaborator. You may know her from early hits like “I Feel Like Jumping,” or her work with the great Bob Andy. She also collaborated with another important Bob — as a Bob Marley backup singer with the I Threes trio. And if you've ever done the Electric Slide, you have Marcia Griffiths to thank for that, too. Her 1983 hit “Electric Boogie” gave birth to the global dance phenomenon which simply refuses to quit. And, thankfully for us, Marcia Griffiths herself refuses to quit. She will be performing as part of the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! summer concert series in Prospect Park on July 15. In the Season 6 Debut, Henry K explains the meaning and importance of "owning your masters" and why it's the catch phrase for a new generation looking to take creative control not only over their work, but over their lives. "Owning your masters," it even sounds powerful, like reckoning or reclamation, and it kind of is. It is the reason why 30 years ago the revolutionary singer Prince, wrote the word slave on his face, and changes his name to unpronounceable symbol. It's why even today, an unlikely rebel named Taylor Swift is re-recording and re- releasing her entire early catalog, of songs she signed away the rights to when she was just a starry eyed teen. Season 6 Preview of Rootsland: This Season Henry K explores the record industry's obsession with finding "The Great White Reggae Super Hero", and the endless supply of suburban kids ready to step into the role. Both the Grateful Dead and Reggae have evolved from music into movements, communities centered around Love, Respect, Unity, and Awareness. Perhaps the most overlooked connection boils down to one Word "Rebellion," The Grateful Dead and Reggae were both born out of separate counter cultures embroiled in the same universal struggle, the fight against the status quo, against injustice and intolerance. In this episode "Who Feels it...Knows it," Henry K experiences the fight first hand and learns, what so many of his friends and colleagues have endured in the music business. By 1994 Henry K had started to earn his stripes in the business, after spending years as a foot soldier patrolling the streets and lurking the studios of Kingston town. in addition to hustling "Henry K"records out of the trunk of his Neva, he partnered up with friend and producer Delroy "Dr. Marshall" Harrison, Gussie Clarke's hotshot young engineer to form a dancehall label called "One Up Music." However, Henry's greatest accomplishment was a co-production that occurred outside the studio, and would change his life forever. Deadly Headly was a Sniper. A musical sharpshooter, that was called in when "Sir Coxsonne Dodd "needed a killer in the studio. For just a few English pounds Headly "the hired gun" along with his partner Trombonist Vin Gordon, always brought the heavy artillery...Writing, arranging, and recording timeless hit horn phrases like raindrops from the Jamaican skies. Headly was happy for the work. He loved making music and though he wasn't able to save much, he was able to pay his rent and stock his pantry. Being somewhat naive and very trusting, Headly never realized when he was getting his meager checks, what he was actually giving up. When Henry & Sia visit him in Negril, they find out....Rootsland is produced by Henry K Productions Inc. in association with Voice Boxx Studios in Kingston, Jamaica. Negril was originally named Xtabi: "The meeting place of the Gods," by the Arawaks one of Jamaica's native Taino Tribes. Cut off from the rest of the island by wetlands, and tidal marshes with dense waterlogged soil. Xtabi was a secluded paradise , where the Arawaks lived in harmony with "the land of Wood and Water..." a land they inhabited for thousands of years and felt a deep spiritual connection with. Then the foreigners came...and destroyed it all. Will history repeat itself? Rootsland is produced by Henry K Productions Inc. in association with Voice Boxx Studios in Kingston, Jamaica. When people think about Country Music, they think of Music Row in Nashville, Punk Rock the lower east in Manhattan and 80''s metal hair bands it's the Sunset Strip in LA. Cities that reflect and project, the music created on their turf, in their clubs, garages and studios. When it comes to reggae music it's the fabled Orange Street in Downtown Kingston, a sacred strip just north of parade that has been accurately referred to as “Beat Street.” Rootsland is produced by Henry K Productions Inc. in association with Voice Boxx Studios in Kingston, Jamaica. Grants Pen has been called a "depressed area, where death is disseminated with unfeeling frequency," not the kind of neighborhood you want a tire blowout out at 3:00 AM. This the time the night scavengers come out , and when fiends desperate for their next fix emerge unnoticed from the shadows. The Armor Heights Crew would get a ride out of dodge but not without a cost, they would break the cardinal rule of the streets...and leave a soldier behind. Dancehall culture and the street dances that inspired it can be traced back the 1950's to poorest and most marginalized areas in Kingston. Attended by residents who lived on gully banks and sustained themselves by sifting through garbage dumps people so broke couldn't afford to go out on the town, and frankly weren't invited . or wanted at the party. so they threw their own inner city street dances that became safe spaces within the concrete jungles where underprivileged youth could converge and express their individuality through music fashion art and, dancing free from a judgmental middle class and popular culture that looked down on the ghettos viewed them a depraved underworld on the fringes of society. . Once the phone started ringing at Brian & Henry's "Dread & Breakfast" their quiet spot in the hills became the Kingston base for dozens of reggae tourists from all over the globe. Music business people, journalists, singers, musicians. Most of them very dedicated to the genre looking to contribute music's international growth and brand, others, Not so Much. These were selfish, self cent “so called” artists, who were all about themselves, traveling to the island in search of fame and fortune and willing to do whatever it took to achieve it. This was the new dancehall "mix tape" generation that grew up on a cliff note version of the music and new nothing of the genres history This Chapter contains language that may be offensive as it depicts actual events that occurred with real people, and is meant to be as realistic as possible.
