HIDDEN SHADOWS #24 I was asked the other day to do a warm up set for Ziggy Marley and his band playing in Norway later this week. So for this Months Hidden Shadow I wanted to explore some of the records that have been luring around my bag for a while, looked for an opportunity to jump on the syncopated soul train. Before digging deep into minimal dubscapes from around the 44 minute mark, and a series of drum'n'bass classics and newbies (kickstarted by a rare 1999 Frédéric Galliano 10" from from around 1:05:30), let's establish a foundation of laid back, soulful reggae. Free assosiative eclectic mix, mostly on vinyl. Hope you like it. Hear music from the Burial remixes of Rhythm & Sound, Ernest Ranglin, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Stereotyp meets Tikiman, Lone, LTJ Bukem, The Mikey Dread Show Dubwise , Junior Murvin, Cedric Im Brooks and others.

Jamaican record producer Lee 'Scratch' Perry is widely celebrated as one of the most important creative figures to emerge in the late-20th Century. In 'I Am The Upsetter: The Sonic Innovation of Lee 'Scratch' Perry,' producer David Katz, who is Perry's authorized biographer, draws on archive interviews to explore his incredible career, which began in the early 1960s and continued until August 2021, only ending when Perry died, aged 85. One of Bob Marley's most important mentors, Perry's Black Ark studio used substandard equipment, but the innovative work he produced there with Max Romeo, Junior Murvin and others inspired a range of artists active in other genres, including Paul McCartney, the Clash, and the Beastie Boys. This is dub revolution.

*Trilha: Paralamas do Sucesso, “Selvagem” (Bi Ribeiro / Herbert Vianna); e The Clash, “Police & thieves” (Lee Perry e Junior Murvin).

JUSTICE FOR BLACK LIVES RVA: PART 2

The movement for Black lives and liberation is more than just a Chauvin verdict. Throughout the summer, calls for justice extended far beyond police convictions, this week on Race Capitol we revisit archived audio from the streets of Richmond in the summer of 2020 and ground ourselves in the fight for Justice for Black Lives. At a time where the Richmond City Council is considering giving the racist police almost $10 million more dollars in funding on top of salary raises when the community is demanding that the police be defunded and abolished….what does justice look like? Tune in as we explore this and speak to community activist Allan-Charles Chipman about the Richmond Budget and hear his thoughts on the implications of the George Floyd verdict for Richmond. As always, we kick off the episode with the latest local, national, and international headlines in our Race capitol reframe. As reggae and punk rock were colliding and coming together in the UK in the 70s, The Clash's version of Junior Murvin's "Police and Thieves" would create a cultural domino effect that would result in several iconic songs including Bob Marley's “Punky Reggae Party” which gave the new social phenomenon a name. It was also to serve as a direct influence on a young up and coming singer-songwriter named Declan MacManus.  He  would later change his name to Elvis Costello and write the first noir reggae song – Watching The Detectives.  The song was written during a 36-hour jag while Costello was hopped up on caffeine and who knows what else. He had been listening to The Clash's first album which he initially hated but which grew on him the more he listened, particularly “Police and Thieves.” If you've listened and received some value from this episode, then please help support the podcast for as little as $3 per month on Patreon. MUSICAL Genius Reggae Artist, Mad producer Lee "scratch" Perry the Black Ark

In 1973, Perry built a studio in his back yard, the Black Ark, to have more control over his productions and continued to produce notable musicians such as Bob Marley & the Wailers, Junior Byles, Junior Murvin, the Heptones, the Congos and Max Romeo. He also started the Black Art label, on which many of the productions from the studio appeared. With his own studio at his disposal, Perry's productions became more lavish, as the energetic producer was able to spend as much time as he wanted on the music he produced. Virtually everything Perry recorded in The Black Ark was done using basic recording equipment; through sonic sleight-of-hand, Perry made it sound unique. Paul Douglas mentions: Scratch had a particular sound and everybody was fascinated by his sound. He had this way of putting things together; it was just his sound and it influenced a lot of people. I've even gone to the Black Ark with Eric Gale for that Negril album; I remember myself and Val Douglas, we laid some tracks there, Eric Gale overdubbed stuff on there, but I honestly don't remember what happened to it Perry remained behind the mixing desk for many years, producing songs and albums that stand out as a high point in reggae history. By 1978, stress and unwanted outside influences began to take their toll: both Perry and The Black Ark quickly fell into a state of disrepair. Eventually, the studio burned to the ground. Perry has constantly insisted that he burned the Black Ark himself in a fit of rage.

London has always been a melting pot when it comes to music, culture and art, so there was never a more perfect place to host a carnival such as Notting Hill. An annual event in the Kensington and Chelsea borough since 1966, each year sees the streets ignited with a sense of pride, fun and inspiration, Don Letts has captured just a little taster of that famous vibe in this month’s podcast. The carnival takes place across two days over the August Bank Holiday weekend with over a million people attending from all over the world. Now it’s all about the celebration, but it began as a response to the race riots of 1959 and was originally held indoors in St Pancras and beamed across the BBC thanks to the mother of Notting Hill Carnival herself, Claudia Jones. Don Letts delves into the history of the event, how it came to reunite communities and his own personal memories from when he started attending in the 70s. From the sounds of Trinidad and steel bands, to taking the event on the road, you’ll get to listen to how it all happened. Alongside the history, expect to hear the musical timeline with some legendary tracks like “Bam Bam” from Sister Nancy, “Police & Thieves” by Junior Murvin and “Boxes and Amps” from the British Dub collective, Zion Train.

Perry was a pioneer in the 1970s development of dub music with his early adoption of remixing and studio effects to create new instrumental or vocal versions of existing reggae tracks. He has worked with and produced for a wide variety of artists, including Bob Marley and the Wailers, Junior Murvin, the Congos, Max Romeo, Adrian Sherwood, the Beastie Boys, Ari Up, and many others. After the demise of the Black Ark in the early 1980s, Perry spent time in England and the United States, performing live and making erratic records with a variety of collaborators. His career took a new path in 1985 when he met Mark Downie (Marcus Downbeat) with whom he worked on the 1986 album "Battle Of Armagideon" for Trojan. It was not until the late 1980s, when he began working with British producers Adrian Sherwood and Neil Fraser (who is better known as Mad Professor), that Perry's career began to get back on solid ground again. Perry also has attributed the recent resurgence of his creative muse to his deciding to quit drinking alcohol and smoking cannabis. In his earlier days, the act of producing for Perry was a frenzied and ritualistic one where he stated that "he blew smoke into the microphone so that the weed would get into the song. Perry stated in an interview that he wanted to see if "it was the smoke making the music or Lee Perry making the music. I found out it was me and that I don't need to smoke

Perry was one of the pioneers in the development of dub music with his early adoption of effects and remixing to create new instrumental or vocal versions of existing reggae tracks. Perry has worked with Bob Marley and the Wailers, Junior Murvin, the Congos and Max Romeo.Perry broke ranks with Gibbs and formed his own label, Upsetter, in 1968. His first major single "People Funny Boy", which was an insult directed at Gibbs, sold well with 60,000 copies sold in Jamaica alone. It is notable for its innovative use of a sample (a crying baby) as well as a fast, chugging beat that would soon become identifiable as "reggae" (the new kind of sound which was given the name "Steppers"). Similarly his acrimonious 1967 single as Lee "King" Perry Run for Cover was likewise aimed at Sir Coxsone. From 1968 until 1972 he worked with his studio band The Upsetters. During the 1970s, Perry released numerous recordings on a variety of record labels that he controlled, and many of his songs were popular in both Jamaica and the UK. He soon became known for his innovative production techniques as well as his eccentric character. In 1970 Perry produced and released The Wailers track "Mr Brown" (1970) with its unusual use of studio effects and eerie opening highlighting his unique approach to production.

++ DEADLY DRAGON TRIBUTE TO JUNIOR "SOUL" MURVIN R.I.P. ++ This one goes out to one of our favorite singers of all time: Junior "Soul" Murvin who passed away this week. From the Rock Steady Cuts he did with Derrick Harriot to his epic Lee Perry produced tunes to the Digital Masterpieces he crafted in the 80s, Jr. Murvin carried a unique style that, no matter how ethereal sounded, was tied to the day-to-day experiences of the sufferers. This mix is not intended to be a "best-of" or anything like that, just a group of tunes we love. Everything on this mix was recorded live and direct with vinyl sweet vinyl but I tacked on the last tune - "Cross-Over" from Marmalade166's You Tube Channel because I couldn't find my copy of the tune! So enjoy the mix and Big Blessings to Junior Murvin for providing such inspirational music Playlist:Glendevon Special (Crystal - Reissue), The Hustler (Pre-release), Magic Touch (Crystal - Reissue), Super Love (Sounds of Monk), Flying High (Sounds of Monk), Super Cool (Sounds of Monk), Super Cool Pt. 2 (Sounds of Monk), Rescue the Children (Move & Groove), Roots Train (Upsetter), Roots Train Dub (Upsetter), Tedious (Mango), Police & Thieves (Mango), Philistines on the Land (Upsetters), Grumbling Dub (Mango), Bingo Kid Dub (Upsetters), Bad Man Possie (DATC), Bad Man DubWise (DATC 12"), Have Been Trying (Thunderbolt), Cool Out Son (Heavy Duty), Strikes and Demonstrations (Arrival), Apartheid (Live & Love 12"), Jack Slick (Live & Love 12"), Make It And Set It (Taurus Reissue), Dancehall Girls (Jammys), Cool Off Son (Jammys), On The LEvel (Jammys), Bounce Back (IUS), Have Some Mercy (Jammys), Puss and Dog (Mr. Murvin Music Maniac), Police And Thief(Ghetto Beat), Cross Over (Upsetters)

The Congos are a reggae vocal group from Jamaica which formed as the duo "Ashanti" Roy Johnson (tenor) b. Roydel Johnson, 1947, and Cedric Myton (falsetto) b. 1947,  later becoming a trio with the addition of Watty Burnett (baritone) b.early 1950s, have been active on and off from the mid-1970s until the present day. They are best known for their Heart of the Congos album, recorded with Lee "Scratch" Perry.Myton had previously been a member of The Tartans in the late 1960s (along with Prince Lincoln Thompson, Devon Russell and Lindburgh Lewis), and Ras Michael's group, and had recorded with Thompson's Royal Rasses in the mid-1970s. He formed the Congos, initially as a duo with Johnson, recording the single "At the Feast" for Lee "Scratch" Perry. Perry expanded the group to a trio with the addition of Burnett, this line-up recording the classic roots reggae album Heart of the Congos in 1977 at Perry's Black Ark studio. The album featured illustrious backing singers such as Gregory Isaacs, The Meditations, and Barry LLewellyn and Earl Morgan of The Heptones. The album has been described as "the most consistently brilliant album of Scratch's entire career".Perry's previous productions by Max Romeo and Junior Murvin had been huge commercial successes thanks to a deal with Island Records, but Perry was in dispute with Island at the time the Congos' album was finished, so it was released on his own Black Ark label, limiting its success overseas, and causing a rift with the group. www.crsradio.com call- 661-467-2407 caribbeanradioshow@gmail.com

DJ Tomas – Umoja Hi-Fi Sound Station "I’m A Rootsman, Part 1: Deep Roots Mix" A 73 minute selection of deeper roots reggae music from the 1970s and ‘80s. This selection focuses on slower, dubbier tracks with conscious themes and lyrics. I was trying to invoke the spirit of reggae radio in the ‘80s – be it pirate radio in the UK, college radio in the US or Dread at the Controls broadcasts in Jamaica. Another inspiration was DJ Andrew’s foundation/roots underground parties in Los Angeles in the mid-90s. A UK native and carpenter, Andrew would hold late night affairs in small after-hours bars on Fairfax Ave, focusing on strictly roots and culture selections. Honest Jons’ Dave Phelps would bring his 45s and Daz and Cokni would rope in. I & I hope you enjoy this set. More soon. Giving I-ses unto Jah I-tinually. Welcome to Episode 20 of the Reggae Lover Podcast, my first "dubwise" edition. This mix was specially requested by Ras Jamal in Savannah, Georgia and features the musical productions and performances of Lee "Scratch" Perry exclusively. One of the pioneers in the development of dub music and remixing in addition to numerous other innovations in production, Lee 'Scratch' Perry truly paved the way for the EDM, Hip-Hop, and Reggae movements of today. Show Notes. We start off in the 60 - 70 BPM range with The Upsetters' Curly Dub and move into a couple different dub versions of Satisfy My Soul featuring Bob Marley and The Wailers. The Upsetters' Super Ape is up next, leading into a "Vibrate On" medley. Augustus Pablo, Max Romeo, Hugo Blackwood and Dr. Alimantado are featured on the riddim alongside Perry and The Upsetters. A cool blend transitions from there into Bob Marley dub once again with "Live," a Lively Up Yourself dub version and then a Screw Face dub version entitled "Face Man." Junior Murvin can then be heard singing "Roots Train," followed by his massive hit tune "Police And Thieves." I selected 3 tracks from Perry's "Arkology" box set on the same riddim. The voices of Glen DaCosta and Jah Lion are featured in this set along with some wicked Saxophone and the masterful instrumentation of Lee Perry dubbing out on the board. For the next few tracks I go into the Jungle Dub album, my favorite album of Perry's work. The very heavy-weight Super Ape album, Ras Jamal's highest rated Scratch Perry album is also a focal point of this mix. Other noteable selections served up are "Bad Walking" with Tommy McCook and "I Chase The Devil/Croaking Lizard" with Max Romeo and Prince Jazzbo. Please email me (reggaeloverpodcast@gmail.com) if you want the full tracklist. My wish is that listeners will hear this mix and go looking for Lee Perry's music to purchase. Dub music should be a part of every reggae lover's music collection.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/reggae-lover/donationsWant to advertise on this podcast?
