This week, CARICOM/Caribbean Community is meeting for their Bi-annual meeting Wednesday to Friday. Haiti & Guyana's Oil will be on the table. The discussions on The Neoliberal Round/in Caribbean Thought at Jamaica Theological Seminary are proving to be timely as Some CARICOM countries are open to intervening in Haiti by force, while Guyana's discovery of oil is being discussed as an opportunity for them to reinvent themselves. However, what's lacking is capital-intensive investments to boast capacity to operate around the final stages of production & unselfish unity. CARICOM MUST TAKES the lead NOT THE US/CANADA. This requires meeting with Haitians on the ground to find a workable solution, not making decisions about #Haiti that caters to one side without including all sides. Where's the #diplomacy? Intervention by force will fail. Haitians are opposed to any intervention by force. However, they need intervention that includes them, one that is led by them. Anything else that disempowers them/takes their pride of independence will be transient. The discovery of oil in Guyana and the investment and development in financial technology by young professionals may provide the answers the Caribbean needs to reinvent itself. Michael Manley and Edwards Seaga may have found a socio-political remedy through Capitalism/Marxism. Later Bob Marley their contemporaries promoted a new religious consciousness saying they look to a religious consciousness not one based in economics which led to his Rata Tafari. Then There were sports, arts, culture, Merlene Ottey, Usain Bolt, Jimmy Cliff /the Reggae Movement, Beenie Man, Louise Bennette, Rex Nettleford & the Jamaica Dance Movement. Yet, the prosperity still resided around servicing the tourist industry. However, through the years the Caribbean has redefined itself learning and reshaping while still building on its new self and prowess in the arts and culture since culture defines a nation. So that today young Jamaicans continue to display their indomitability & creativity carving out a future for Jamaica. People like Kevin Donaldson who had recently created Jamaica's own remittance company & unveiled a plan for the development of a huge corporate hub. However, work is becoming remote so how's this revolutionary? https://theneoliberal.com. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theneoliberal/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theneoliberal/support

Chris Blackwell, an inductee of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, is widely considered responsible for turning the world on to reggae music. As the founder of Island Records, he helped forge the careers of Bob Marley, Cat Stevens, Grace Jones, U2, Roxy Music, among many other high-profile acts, and produced records including Marley's Catch a Fire and Uprising. Blackwell currently runs Island Outpost, a group of elite resorts in Jamaica, which includes GoldenEye—the former home of author Ian Fleming. He produced Kiss of the Spider Woman and Stop Making Sense, and other films. He was location scout and production assistant for the Bond film Dr. No before deciding to devote himself to the music. He received the A&R Icon Award in recognition of his lasting influence on the music business. He is author, with Paul Morley, of The Islander: My Life in Music and Beyond.“The Harder They Come, that film was made by a very close friend of mine. And it was at a period where Jamaican music had started to really catch fire a bit. It was certainly selling in England. It was starting to grow, and there was interest in England and Europe. Not really in America. America wasn't interested in it at that period in time at all. But it was really decided to try and get this across. To do a film so you could get a feel for where this music was coming from. And a man called Perry Henzell, who was a very good friend of mine, he wanted to do a film. He called me one time and said there was an album cover of Jimmy Cliff, who was one of the other artists that I was working with from early on. And he said he's the guy I really want to be the leader of the film. And so I said, ‘Okay, that's great. Go ahead.' And so Jimmy Cliff really became the leader of that film. And that film really sort of expanded the whole image and point of view of Jamaican music and Jamaican life. That film was very, very important for getting Jamaican music known in the world.”www.islandoutpost.com www.simonandschuster.com/books/The-Islander/Chris-Blackwell/9781982172701 www.islandrecords.comwww.creativeprocess.info www.oneplanetpodcast.org IG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast

You know those movies that are about a young person full of promise, who comes to the big city in search of fortune and fame, but inescapable poverty and exploitative gatekeepers drive them to crime, oh and these movies also have a really good soundtrack? Well, this is one of those. And it's probably the best version of all them, thanks to Jimmy Cliff. *Come support the podcast and get yourself or someone you love a random gift at our merch store. Today's episode is The Harder They Come soundtrack, featuring Jimmy Cliff, Desmond Dekker, Toots and the Maytals and several others. I am personally writing the testimonial, but actually this is a mutual pick between the three of us. We love this album so much, it is the perfect introduction to the music of Jamaica in the late 60s/early 70s, and puts you in the best mood whenever you put it on. We played this record at Cabinista! before filming this episode, just feeling the good vibes and was so inspiring and uplifting, but also brought back strong memories from our collective past. It is one of our favorite albums of all time, and honestly surprised it took this long into the show before we talked about it! Enjoy the episode, and listen to this album at least once a year, especially if you need some cheering up and want to have a good time with your friends. James Joyce - Three on the Ones and Twos.

He has won The Guild Of Music Supervisors Awards in 2016, 2017, 2018 & 2020 respectively for Diary Of A Teenage Girl, 20th Century Women, Before I Fall and Native Son. Howard first worked in LA as a club creator/DJ/promoter. His work back then was known for developing emergent new music scenes particularly ska, mod and the paisley underground. His club, The O.N .Klub in collaboration with Sugarhill Records, was also the first locale to play a rap show in Los Angeles. Howard subsequently became an independent publicist representing clients including MTV, Ian Hunter & Mick Ronson, N.W.A., Jimmy Cliff, Eric Burdon, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Bunny Wailer and Michelle Shocked. Howard then went on to become Vice President, Media & Artist Relations at Polygram Records before transitioning to the role of Vice President, Soundtracks. In this role, he worked on many soundtracks including The Big Lebowski and Gregg Araki's Nowhere as well as creating opportunities for Polygram artists to write themes for TV shows including King Of The Hill and Ellen. Jacqui sits down with her sister friend and fellow British Jamaican, Odessa Chambers, lifestyle doyenne and daughter of reggae legend, Jimmy Cliff. Despite her father's fame, Odessa is a personality in her own right and has been involved in modern Jamaican pop culture from being involved in Jamaica's first cable tv channel and a pioneer in the podcast space, she lives and breathes lifestyle as a "music baby". Odessa has worked with Nick Cannon, 50 Cent, Beenie Man and numerous other celebrities as well as being a local producer for overseas crews of networks, shows and documentaries including VICE, the BBC, HGTV and America's Next Top Model. Odessa is pro Africa and an advocate for more collaborative links between that continent and the Caribbean. She shares why we should all add Ghana to our bucket lists, eat fish and chips in England and encourages visits to Negril and Kingston while staying in Jamaica. Editor's Note: Better late than never! There were technical challenges and the much delayed season finale is here. Host, JuicyChef also apologises in advance for the amount of "you know's" she drops in the introduction, she had a good laugh about it in post production with her sound engineer Roel. Now that explanation is out of the way, enjoy the season finale. Look forward to connecting with you for Season 4. One Love! “Cuando” Adam Topol doesn't sit behind a kit the size of Alex Van Halen's or Chad Smith's, but he's equally as mighty. Topol is like Charlie Watts in the sense that he just kind of sits in the pocket and holds it all down. Like Watts, his style looks super laid back, but looks are deceptive because laid back appearance aside, big work is getting done. Topol is a subtle player who's inventive, tasteful and intuitive and he plays with a blend of finesse and muscle—he's one of the best drummers on the planet. Subtlety aside, the Lake Tahoe born Topol was reared on punk rock and his teenage years were spent listening to bands like Black Flag and the Adolescents. The young drummer pounded away on his kit to the loud stuff, but he was also equally smitten by the quieter stuff like the music of Cat Stevens. Educated at USC and the Berklee College of Music, Tool's formal education quickly gave way to knowledge that can only come from outside a university campus. In other words, real life. And in his real life, Topol soaked the world up. A fan of jazz and Afro Cuban percussion, Topol spent time in Cuba studying the discipline of drums. Although Topol might be best known as the longtime drummer for Jack Johnson, he's sat behind the kit for Alana Davis, Ziggy Marley, Eddie Vedder, David Gilmour and Jimmy Cliff. He's played in a band with Joey Santiago of the Pixies, been a part of the Culver City Dub Collective and put out great solo albums like 2019's Cuando, which showcased his talents as a singer-songwriter. Adam is a practitioner who plays with fine drawn precision, rhythmic smarts and musical intuition. He's a fabulous player and a very cool guy www.adamtopol.com www.adamtopol.bandcamp.com www.bombshellradio.com Stereo Embers www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenonline.com IG: @emberspodcast

A collection of this week's Witness History programmes, presented by Max Pearson. The guest is Dr Emily Zobel Marshall. She explains the rise of festivals around the world celebrating Caribbean culture. In 1962, Nigerian man Phil Magbotiwan opened a brand new nightclub in Manchester, UK. In part because of his own personal experiences of racism, Phil wanted to create somewhere where everyone would be welcome – Manchester's first racially inclusive nightclub. The Reno was born. Phil's youngest daughter, Lisa Ayegun has been speaking to Matt Pintus about the venue. This programme contains descriptions of racial discrimination. We also hear about how an Israeli solider was brought back home after spending five years in captivity in Gaza, the fall of Slobodan Milosevic and how a low budget film staring musician Jimmy Cliff brought reggae to the world. In the latest episode of Retrosonic Podcast, Steve from Retro Man Blog and Buddy Ascott of The Fallen Leaves are on location at the excellent Eel Pie Island Museum in Twickenham in the company of museum curator Michele Whitby and music historian Pete Watt. We discuss the rich musical heritage of what has become known as the Thames Delta and the birthplace of 60's British Beat and R'n'B, focusing on the legendary Eel Pie Island Hotel and some of the famous acts who played there. From it's opening night in 1956 and the Trad Jazz of Acker Bilk, Chris Barber and George Melly to the last show in 1970, the Hotel hosted gigs by many hugely influential bands and artists. There were shows by the leading importers of American Blues and R'n'B such as Alexis Corner, Long John Baldry and John Mayall, the originators Howlin' Wolf and John Lee Hooker and of course, their young acolytes such as the Rolling Stones, The Artwoods and Downliners Sect. That's not to forget Soul acts like Jimmy Cliff and Geno Washington and even the later incarnation when the Hotel was transformed into Colonel Barefoot's Rock Garden and started putting on Heavy Rock and Psychedelic acts such as The Who, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Joe Cocker and Black Sabbath. One of the most fascinating aspects is discovering all the now legendary names who made early pre-fame and fortune appearances at the Eel Pie Hotel including David Bowie with The Manish Boys, Jeff Beck with The Tridents, Ian McLagan with The Muleskinners and Eel Pie audience regular, Rod 'The Mod' Stewart with Steampacket. Join us for this fascinating journey, not only around the Eel Pie Island Museum itself but on a magical trip through years of local music history. The episode is soundtracked by choice cuts from Downliners Sect, Rolling Stones, The Who, The Manish Boys, The Steampacket, Georgie Fame & The Blue Flames, The Artwoods, The Muleskinners and Geno Washington. For full track listing, photos from the museum, further info and links please check out the feature at Retro Man Blog at the link below:https://retroman65.blogspot.com/2022/09/retrosonic-podcast-eel-pie-island.html

Ahead of Jamaican Independence Day, Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode immerse themselves in one of the island's greatest exports, The Harder They Come, marking the film's 50th anniversary. The Harder They Come was a sensation, but it took a while for its vibrations to be heard around the world. In 1972, the premiere in Kingston brought the area to a complete standstill. Outside of Jamaica, the film helped introduce reggae music to millions, thanks to its Jimmy Cliff-driven soundtrack. Exploring the film's continuing legacy, Ellen hears from one of its stars, Carl Bradshaw, and the film's publicist Barbara Blake-Hannah, for whom the movie was so life-changing that she left the UK and moved to Jamaica where she later became a Member of Parliament. Mark speaks to DJ, broadcaster, musician and filmmaker Don Letts, whose film Dancehall Queen is a homage to The Harder They Come. Mark also talks to music supervisor Ed Bailie who worked closely with Steve McQueen on his Small Axe films, including Lovers Rock which also owes a great debt to this cult classic. Ellen and Mark also look at what The Harder They Come did, or did not do, for the Jamaican film industry, and the films that followed it - including Rockers, Countryman, and Babylon. Join hosts Scott Murphy and Kyle Hintz as they continue their 90s Seagal journey with a plot breakdown of the 1990 movie "Marked for Death." In this one, Seagal single-handedly takes out the Jamaican Posse gang problem! What is that? Political incorrectness ahoy, you say! Well, you would be right, although this film is definitely 100% not racist. How do we know? Well, the movie regularly reassures it is very much not at regular intervals. Look, as Seagal enjoys reggae music and Keith David patronisingly accepts the Jamaican people. Heck, there is even a Jimmy Cliff cameo, so there! Elsewhere in the episode, Scott and Kyle celebrate Basil Wallace's excellent villain performance and Seagal's best on-screen buddy partnership (with the aforementioned David). They also try to work out what Joanna Pacula's character Leslie is actually a professor of, marvel at Seagal's ability to shoot with his eyes closed and mark out for the greatest villain death in any Seagal film (and one of the best in '90s action cinema to boot!). The California band Cracker would have its greatest success with its second studio album, Kerosene Hat. Cracker is David Lowery on lead vocals and guitar, Johnny Hickman on lead guitar and vocals, Davey Faragher on bass and vocals, and Michael Urbano on drums. The name of the album comes from a time when Lowery and Hickman lived together in an old run-down house whose only heat source was a pair of kerosene heaters. They had to walk to a nearby gas station to buy more kerosene and would bundle up with a wool cap that came to be known as the kerosene hat. While the group considered themselves more drawn to roots rock or country, the album went platinum during the days of grunge as an alternative rock sound. It definitely does not follow the over produced "hair band" sound that was beginning to wane in the early 90's. Much of the album was recorded in an abandoned sound stage in Pioneertown, California, in a location so run down that the group had to round up old mattresses from junk yards to provide insulation on colder days. The band holds a music festival there each year. Wayne leads this expedition into the early 90's rock scene. LowThis single only reached number 64 on the US Billboard Hot 100, but it was number 3 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks. Lowery claimed that the song was not about drugs, and that the lyric is not "like being stoned," but "like being stone." Other lyrics like "a million poppies gonna make me sleep" make this claim seem a bit more dubious.Get Off ThisThe second single from the album is a response to former fans who accused Cracker of selling out to make more mainstream music. The response is obvious from the chorus: "So let's get off this, and get on with it. If you wanna change the world, shut your mouth and start to spin it."Lets Go for a Ride This deeper track is well described by the title - it is a driving song. "So, drive real fast through the underpass, and if we die or if we crash, well, I'd be flattered to be buried right next to you." Euro-Trash Girl This is a bit of a "hidden track" on the CD (coming in at #69), and is a favorite of serious Cracker fans. It was originally released on the EP "Tucson" It tells the story of a lonely guy in Europe who suffers through a series of break-ups. The band wrote this as a group, partly based on things the members had experienced, and some made up situations. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:I Can See Clearly Now by Jimmy Cliff (from the motion picture “Cool Runnings”)The appearance of the Jamaican national team in the bobsled event for the 1988 Winter Olympics inspired this movie staring John Candy. STAFF PICKS:Sober by TOOLRob brings us a grunge song from the Los Angeles band Tool. The song is off their debut album, but it was most known for its creepy stop-action video. Similarities to Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" have prompted a number of mash-ups. The lyrics were inspired by a friend of the band whose creativity only came out when he was under the influence.Hey Jealousy by Gin BlossomsThe song Brian features was written by guitarist Doug Hopkins about his former girlfriend. Hopkins was fired for unreliability associated with his heavy drinking, but the song propelled the Gin Blossoms to success. Hopkins became depressed and committed suicide in December 1993. Perfectly Good Guitar by John HiattBruce's staff pick is a minor key blues number from a singer-songwriter who has worked with a tremendous amount of artists. This song from his eleventh studio album laments the way that rock stars get attention by smashing up perfectly good guitars.Bad Thing by Cry of LoveWayne's staff pick is a deeper cut. Cry of Love is out of Raleigh, North Carolina, and has a sound reminiscent of Bad Company. It was a throwback to solid 70's rock during a time when that genre of music was out of favor. Band members would go on to perform with other groups including the Black Crowes and Lynyrd Skynyrd. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Leave That Thing Alone by RushThis instrumental from the Counterpoints album is a bit of a continuation of the "Where's My Thing" instrumental from Rush's previous album.

Brooklyn-based musician Max ZT has been called the “Hendrix of Hammered Dulcimer” and is widely regarded as one of the instrument's most prolific and innovative performers. In this episode, he joins Alex to explain the origin and design of the instrument, which he describes as the predecessor to the piano, and demystifies how to play it with some detailed examples. Max tells Alex about discovering the instrument at an early age, and the two discuss the importance of being present and judgment-free when playing. You'll also hear clips from the jam session that happened during the recording.Taking his roots from Irish and American folk music, Max has transplanted his compositional techniques to both Senegal, where he studied the Mandinko technique with the Cissoko griot family, and to India, where he received the prestigious American Institute of Indian Studies Fellowship grant to study under the world-renowned santoor master Pandit Shivkumar Sharma. His fresh perspective and bold experimentalism have been the backbone to beautiful, complex, and genuine compositions, while his unorthodox playing style has been a pioneering force in revolutionizing dulcimer techniques.Max ZT and his band House of Waters have been called “One of the most original bands on the planet,” by NY Music Daily, and have shared the stage with some of the most influential international musical leaders of the century including Pt. Ravi Shankar, Tinariwen, Jon Bon Jovi, Jimmy Cliff, Bela Fleck, Karsh Kale, Snarky Puppy, and more. Max's debut solo album Daybreak will be released on April 8.
