Welcome the great guitarist/singer/songwriter/producer PAPA MALI! Based in NOLA for the past dozen years, Papa Mali is a certified rock n' roll troubadour, having lived several musical lives in numerous locales across the past half-century. An artist for art's sake and rad to the core, Malcolm is an old-school bluesman, reggae devotee, soul/R&B aficionado - he's at home with funk, folk, and gutbucket piano joints too. The man is a living breathing chameleonic musicologist in our midst. A conversation brimming with detailed ruminations and colorful pointifications. In addition to the Crescent City, Papa Mali reflects on nascent days soaking up culture in his Shreveport childhood, before wandering onward to Little Rock, Kingston Jamaica, Austin, and eventually New Orleans, with a plethora of potent points between. The lifelong soundtrack to these travels, trials, and tribulations is a terrifically-tasty gumbo on the transistor radio station. Episode 070 starts with a short message from your host, a moment of reflection and prayer for peace. Followed by a brief tribute to the dearly departed NOLA drummer/icon RUSSELL BATISTE JR. Papa Mali begins our conversation with a lengthy, touching tribute to fallen friend and collaborator, an Austin legend, bassist BRAD HOUSER. 3:15 - a word from our sponsor iamavl 6:00 - a brief acknowledgement of current events 9:30 - The Upful Update 16:00 - Celebrating the life of Russell Batiste Jr. 21:30 - Russell Batiste Jr. talks about Frenchy 23:15 - introducing PAPA MALI 27:15 - INTERVIEW w/ Papa Mali (108 mins) 2:15:30 - afterglow & Vibe Junkie JAM Please check out our sponsor IAMAVL Papa Mali interview topics include: Remembering Brad Houser, discovering/absorbing music as a kid, Howlin' Wolf, Rolling Stones, Johnny Slim Campbell, a wide-eyed, shape-shifting 1977 sojourn to Kingston, Jamaica at the apex of political gangland warring, getting adopted by rastas in the bush, moving to Austin, acclaimed American reggae band Killer Bees, the death of co-founder Michael E. More overstaying migrants have been found to be living in inhumane conditions. Several overstayers have been found in a backyard shantytown in West Auckland, living in makeshift sheds and a dilapidated caravan. The Migrant Exploitation Relief Foundation has since filed a complaint about this case to Immigration New Zealand- and Auckland Council plans to investigate. Foundation trustee Casey Costello says it's important that these cases of migrant exploitation are being brought to light. "The circumstances are sad and tragic, but we have this underbelly to our workforce that is here illegally - we're not trying to protect the fact that there's illegal conduct going on - but we also want to get these investigated." French authorities begin demolition of vast Mayotte shantytown by Radio Islam
It is one of Europe's largest shantytowns. Canada Real in the Spanish capital Madrid is just 15 kilometres away from the landmark square Puerta del Sol. A side of the city few tourists see. Conditions were already poor in much of the neighbourhood and then, in October 2020, the electricity was cut off to thousands of residents, including many young children. Many believe the authorities want to drive them out of the area. Report by Céline Schmitt, Armelle Exposito and Sarah Morris.

On this episode of the Innocence Redeemed podcast I will be sharing a dream-vision I had on the morning of 9/19/2022 where I appeared to be in a desolate land with shanty-towns intermittently scattered and those in these were doing unsavory things just to stay alive or doing what they had to do just to survive. The dream indicates what the tribulation judgment will look like if the misled church in addition to unbelievers alike, do not find their salvation/repentance. It's not a pretty picture. Verses as they pertain to this episode may be found on my blog: https://www.innocenceredeemed.blog/2022/09/19/dream-new-podcast-the-whole-world-will-become-a-shanty-town/
Pacific Paradise by Kurt CarlsonPacific Paradise is the tale of two coming-of-age stories, one of a small island-nation, and the second of a young girl, the daughter of the nation's president. While citizens of Sumonajob battle between isolationism and an open country welcoming tourism, Mimi must decide which side to choose as her relationship with American businessman Jason Richards grows from hatred and misunderstanding to friendship and alliance.Among the subplots of the story include the European colonization of the island, the separation of political factions on the future of Sumonajob, and the various characters who show up throughout the story.Whether it's the weeklong crab races, the deadly trip down to Shanty Town, the abduction of Richards's secretary on their second day on the island, or the comings and goings of Luana and Jeanie, the story twists unexpectedly at every point.Kurt Carlson was born and raised on Long Island, New York. He spent 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, having spent approximately 14 of those years in the Pacific Theater of Operations.Carlson was stationed in the Philippines, Thailand and Okinawa, Japan. It was while on Okinawa that the idea for this story began to develop. The island-nation of Sumonajob is a compilation of all these countries where Carlson was stationed. Some of the events were loosely based on world events which happened during the time frame that Carlson was there. After retiring from the military, Carlson settled in Winter Haven, Florida. He has a son living in Massachusetts, one step son and one step daughter, both in North Carolina, and a fiancee, Jo Anne, making her own adventures in the Middle East.https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08NFMKZFR/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1https://www.kurtcarlson.net/http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/5522pmg.mp3
"Margaret “Molly” Brown: Unsinkable"This season of Holy Donors features socialite, Titanic survivor, and philanthropist, Margaret “Molly” Brown. Let us be clear from the start, Molly Brown is not so much a nickname as a fictional name, one that worked better in song lyrics in the musical comedy about Margaret Brown's life. Margaret Brown is the real world subject of this season's Holy Donors podcast, and we invite you to join us to learn more about Margaret, her life, and her philanthropic endeavors.Margaret was born in July 1867 in Hannibal, Missouri as Margaret Tobin. She grew up in a large family of poor Irish immigrants in a post-Civil War political climate. The poverty and political struggles of Margaret's childhood likely greatly influenced her future philanthropy. The bulk of this initial episode shares stories of Margaret's young adult years in Leadville, Colorado. Leadville was a popular, prosperous silver mining town when Margaret arrived with dreams of finding and marrying a wealthy man. It was in Leadville that Margaret met her future (not wealthy!) husband, J.J. Brown. Margaret and J.J. had a few happy years as newlyweds in Leadville, but in the early 1890s the price of silver fell dramatically, the silver mines in Leadville closed, and most residents became unemployed. At this point, Margaret and J.J. are on the verge of losing everything, but a rare and unexpected opportunity comes for J.J. Tune in next week to find out if and how Margaret and J.J. find success after the price of silver crashes.---Recommended reading: "Molly Brown: Unraveling the Myth" by Kristen Iversen---Holy Donors is brought to you by Petrus Development (petrusdevelopment.com) in cooperation with RED-C Catholic Radio (redcradio.org).For more about Holy Donors please visit our website at holydonors.com or find us @HolyDonors on Instagram and Facebook.Holy Donors: Bringing you inspiring stories of radical generosity that have changed the world.
When data is treated as technology, what inevitably happens is the business no longer feels like they own it—and it starts doing its own thing. Now, rather than having a centralized depository of company data, you have a shantytown of data across your organization with everybody grasping onto their own departmental shards of information. How do you escape a data shantytown? In this episode, Anand Pandya, Chief Data Officer at Curinos, explains why treating data as a business-owned asset will help you break free of the dreaded data shantytown. We discuss: The benefits of a consultative approach Why data needs to be seen as a business-owned asset Why a CDO's job is to answer the question, “now what?” The importance of tying data professionals into the lifecycle of data Join the In:Confidence Community. Evictions and housing insecurity aren't new issues in this country; since the beginning of European colonization of the Amerikas, displacement, forced encampment, and enslavement have been critical to sustaining the wealth of a small number of white male settlers. The foundation of this U.S. occupation has always rested on the practices of extraction and expansionism, building over anyone who dares to challenge the corporate elite's gross mismanagement of the land. The call to “free the land” is not simply about grass, water, or territory; it's a call for reclamation: of culture, autonomy, and community control. This week on Race Capitol, co-host Nomi Isaac sits down with Haitian-born Pan-African theorist, organizer, and author of the book “Take Back the Land: Land, gentrification, and the Umoja Village Shantytown,” Max Rameau. We discuss the links between policing and housing--and reflect on how a small community of housing insecure people launched a 6-month long occupation to protest against gentrification in FL. In the spirit of Black August, we open the show with words + a call to action from New Afrikan prisoner, Shaka Shakur.
In part 3 of our series “Was Keisha Lance Bottoms A Good Mayor” we wrap up our look at her criminal justice policies by looking at the crime statistics ourselves. We tell Buckhead to chill out a little, and we give our opinions on whether Keisha was a good mayor when it came to crime and policing.

An Australian tourism spokesperson says comments by our Tourism Minister are understandable, but limiting.Stuart Nash this morning suggested Kiwis travel in New Zealand rather than going to Australia. He told Mike Hosking: "Why would you go to Australia when you've got the Franz Josef Glacier, when you've got Hokitika, when you've got Wanaka, when you've got Shantytown, all these fantastic things. "Don't go to Australia, come down to the West Coast."South Australian Tourism Marketing executive director Brent Hill told Andrew Dickens both countries offer unique opportunities."It is expected from people in that sort of position, but I think it is probably a little narrow-minded. I think both of us have got a lot to offer, and I think it's a great thing both countries are travelling each way." LISTEN ABOVE

The eternal Free Bird, Ronnie Van Zant Ronnie Van Zant, In Concert Ronald Wayne Van Zant was born on January 15, 1948. His father Lacey, was a long haul trucker and his mother Marion, nicknamed “Sister”, was a part time doughnut shop employee and the fundamental caregiver of the family's six children. Even as a young person, Ronnie had ambitions to escape the lower middle class enclave he grew up in which was literally known as “Shantytown.” Lynyrd Skynyrd, 1973. Ronnie Van Zant is second from the right. Ed King is to his right, Gary Rossington to his left Typically, warmup bands for the Who were booed off the stage and even pelted with debris. But, limited to a 30 minute set, Lynyrd Skynyrd won the crowd over and even prompted demands for their own encore. Watching this performance, the Who entourage and their manager Peter Rudge were impressed. Nothing of this nature had ever happened before and Rudge, who managed both the Who and The Rolling Stones, took note. Hell House Kooper was immediately impressed by the band's preparation and focus, all business once they entered the recording studio. This came from years of rehearsals at the band practice space at a location dubbed “Hell House.” This shack, in the middle of nowhere on the outskirts of Jacksonville was an un-air conditioned, uninsulated dwelling that made for extremely unpleasant conditions, especially during the humid, 90 plus degree days of summer. The location, on a 90 acre plot of isolated property, was an alternative to suburban spaces that usually were subject to local resident complaints and police interruption. 12 hour days at Hell House made the relative luxury of a professional recording studio a welcome alternative. How many people can say they spent nine years as the former president of South Africa's body guard? Nope, not us either. But Chris Lubbe is so much more than his 'headline' suggests. The youngest of 10, whom experienced apartheid first hand and spent years of his life vehemently campaigning for his and his countrymen's freedom. From witnessing police brutality at the age of 8, becoming a wanted man at 18, to being tortured and waterboarded within seconds of death - he has seen the very worst and the very best in all that life has to offer. Chris came to work with Nelson Mandela by complete coincidence - beginning a new career as a bodyguard - mainly because the revolutionary was fascinated with the fact he was 6ft3 and wears size 14 shoes! Now an inspirational speaker and coach living in the UK, he continues to inspire others to take action and bring about change within their personal lives and communities. During his conversation with #FIMpod host Clare Freeman, Chris talks of hope, justice and forgiveness. All themes he believes are important even today, when the world continues to remain divided over Donald Trump, racism, religion and war. Presented and produced by ASFB Productions. Music by Thomas Ragsdale.
The Celebrity Link: #1 songs by Jamaicans reaching UK Singles National Chart The incidence of Jamaican recordings reaching the United Kingdom charts and impacting British culture has become commonplace. Millie Small's 1964 remake of Barbie Gaye's 1957 R&B hit, My Boy Lollipop set the trend when it climbed to No. 2 on the British charts. It effectively opened the floodgates for a deluge of Jamaican recordings to flow incessantly onto the British charts. Earlier, others like Laurel Aitken and Dandy Livingstone created an initial impact, with Aitken's Boogie in My Bones and Little Sheila in 1957 becoming the first Jamaican-made recordings to be distributed in England. A couple years after Millie Small's hit, ska legend Prince Buster burst onto the UK music scene with the ultimate rude-boy song, Al capone Guns Don't Argue, which established his career in Britain. The year 1967 saw the biggest Jamaica-UK hit of that period, when Desmond Dekker's 007 (Shanty Town) found its way to the No. 14 slot on the charts. Dekker, who had ushered in a more conscious form of Jamaican rocksteady, revealed to the outside world, through the recording, the condition of ghetto dwellers and gun-toting hoodlums in a society going through a transition: Two years later, Dekker and the Aces would return to register Jamaica's greatest impact on the UK charts and the first Jamaican record to hit the No. 1 spot there — Israelites. Although few could understand its lyrics, it became a timeless masterpiece, merely on the strength of its intense reggae beat, reaching the top in April 1969.http://www.herald.co.zw/jamaican-music-rules-uk/ 661-467-2407 www.crsradio.com

Together with his backing group, The Aces (consisting of Wilson James and Easton Barrington Howard), he had one of the earliest international reggae hits with "Israelites" (1968). Other hits include "007 (Shanty Town)" (1967), "It Mek" (1969) and "You Can Get It If You Really Want" (1970).Desmond Adolphus Dacres was born in Saint Andrew Parish (Greater Kingston), Jamaica, on 16 July 1941. Dekker spent his early formative years in Kingston, the capital of Jamaica. From a very young age Dekker would regularly attend the local church with his grandmother and aunt. This early religious upbringing as well as his enjoyment of singing hymns led to a lifelong religious commitment. Following his mother's death as a result of illness, Dekker moved to the parish of St. Mary and then later to St. Thomas. While at St. Thomas Dekker embarked on an apprenticeship as a tailor before returning to Kingston where he secured employment as a welder. His workplace singing had drawn the attention of his co-workers who encouraged him to pursue a career in the music industry. In 1961 he auditioned for Coxsone Dodd (Studio One) and Duke Reid (Treasure Isle) though neither audition was successful. The young unsigned vocalist then successfully auditioned for Leslie Kong's Beverley's record label and was awarded his first recording contract.
