The relationship metaphor, a bridge period, and the point of entry. Justin Sullivan (Nightshop, Flatworms, The Babies) Night Shop "The Beloved Returns" LP- https://www.salinasrecords.com/products "Night Shop is the songwriting project of Justin Sullivan. Sullivan has worked as a touring drummer for the past twenty years with a half dozen DIY punk bands, including Ringers and an early incarnation of Worriers. In 2009, he joined The Babies alongside Kevin Morby and Cassie Ramone. When the band went on hiatus in 2013, Sullivan moved to Los Angeles with Morby and continued working with him as a staple of the live band and playing on all of Morby's studio albums. In the meantime, Sullivan also formed the fuzz punk outfit Flat Worms, with Tim Hellman of Oh Sees and Will Ivy. But in the middle of a tour in August of 2016, Sullivan realized the rigors of the road had grown to be too much. He made the decision to take a full calendar year away from touring and focus, for the first time, on writing his own music. Like most of Sullivan's projects, the album is a family affair. His former touring and recording partner in the Kevin Morby band, Meg Duffy (Hand Habits) plays bass on several of the songs and sings backup vocals on a few as well. Flat Worms cohort Will Ivy plays lead guitar on some, while Mare labelmate and soon-to-be touring partner Anna St. Louis sings backup on two songs. The album was engineered by Jarvis Taveniere of Woods and mixed by Drew Fischer who previously worked with Sullivan on Morby's first two records and The Babies second album Our House On The Hill. “For the past twenty years, Justin has been guided by music, moving through the world one song at at time. No matter the project, he has always been seen less as a drummer and more as the yin to the songwriters yang, with his defined ability to help craft a song into exactly what it should be. He is a secret weapon – the thread that runs through many people's favorite records. And so it is here that he steps out from behind his kit for the first time and to stage center as Night Shop. When I think about this record, a lyric from “A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall,” comes to mind. It's the line where Dylan sings, “I'll know my song, well before I starting singing.” In The Break is the product of someone who has had a lot to say and has waited for the perfect moment to say it.” -Kevin Morby" Excerpt from https://woodsist.com/product/night-shop-in-the-break-lp/ Nightshop: Bandcamp: https://nightshop.bandcamp.com Instagram: @nightshopband Website: https://www.nightshopband.com Records: https://www.salinasrecords.com/products Merch: https://nightshop.bandcamp.com/merch Flatworms: Bandcamp: https://flatwormsmusic.bandcamp.com Instagram: @flatwormsband Records: https://www.dragcity.com/artists/flat-worms Merch: https://www.merchbar.com/rock-alternative/flat-worms The Babies: Instagram: @thebabiesforever Records: https://kevinmorby.merchtable.com/the-babies/?

I had Dan Rincon on to discuss the 1985 movie 'The Return Of The Living Dead'. Hell yeah.

It's time again to set the controls for the heart of the sun and celebrate our co-host: Robert Harrison's birthday! Space out with us as we absorb a collection of songs that evoke the essence and vibes of his favorite band: Pink Floyd. While not obscure at all (they have 2 albums that are diamonds!), we shine on with snippets of similar sounds and themes by somewhat more modern bands from the 90s until today. What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. Robert is usually forced to test his endurance, but this week is all about songs firmly in his big bang zone. Our hope is that we turn you on to something that was lost on your ears, even with this collection of great dance songs sounding similar to one of the biggest selling rock acts of all time.Songs this week include:The McBroom Sisters – “What Do You Want From Me”from Black Floyd(2020)Porcupine Tree – “The Jokes On You” from Up The Down Stair (1993) King Buffalo – “Mammoth” from Regenerator (2022)RPWL – “Masters Of War” from The RPWL Experience (2008)Thee Oh Sees – “Carrion Crawler” from Carrion Crawler / The Dream (2011)North Atlantic Oscillation – “Ceiling Poem” from Grappling Hooks (2010)Anathema – “Your Possible Pasts / Goodbye Cruel World” from Alternative 4 (1998)Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uIf you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Follow Mixtapes With Mike on Instagram here...https://www.instagram.com/mixtapeswithmikepodcast/ This week I sat down with artist Craig Davison. I first discovered his work in a little gallery in a retail village called Swinfen Hall. There were a fair few chintzy gift shops selling stuff your mum would love and an overpriced coffee shop but there was also a gallery. I was blown away by the style of his paintings, he essentially paints kids pretending to be their heroes with the shadow of that hero looming over them in the ether. There were also some pencil sketches, one of which was of Robin Williams which I still regret not buying there and then. Doing this podcast has been so much fun and recently I've been lucky enough to speak to some bonafide heroes of mine, I never thought in a million years I get Craig on and he was such a lovely bloke to talk to. If you enjoy listening half as much as I liked making this, please pass it on, leave a review and help me reach more people. This week on TBP's new music show: Andy Cooper from Ugly Duckling has no egrets, Osees, Oh Sees and/or Thee Oh Sees are caught by the fuzz and James Williamson and Denis Tek are offering Two To One on their album sounding like Stooges-meets-Birdman 40 years on (get on at that price). Also: old grooves, inexplicably big in Europe, personal commissions, even more still hungry, coffee shop sugar theft, grime guests, fixating on the seventh-best Beatles album at the expense of listening to anything released in the last decade, west coast Beasties, insufficient Patreon tierage, washed dads, writing about your lived experience, Do Not Want, interestingly weird vs unlistenably weird vs just weird, amplifiers full of gravel, where are we going and why have we taken so many drugs, hinging off ancient runes, our Blues Explosion classic albums ep, driving through mud, Sydney nightlife: it always sucked, some working parts, second divorce Guardian boomer energy, wandering off into the countryside, #DocReadsBios, Harry Styles styles, sick as a parrot, no we have no idea what Doc is saying either but we're very very sorry and last week tonight. Next week: Elderbrook, Didirri and Frankie and the Witch Fingers. Current and recent review albums are in our album review playlist on Spotify, along with our full archive of earlier review albums from 2020 and our long-awaited mixtape of our favourite tracks from therein.

I just heard a new band called the Osees. No, not Thee Oh Sees, or Oh Sees, or OCS, Osees. For the past 20-plus years, John Dwyer has been a musical chameleon appearing in several bands, half of which have a very similar sounding name. He's the musician Keith has seen live most often and no matter the venue or the band around him, he puts on a stellar show. We tell you all about it here. Alas, during these chaotic and troubling times, there are no concerts and a livestream is all we have to look forward to. Until then, please enjoy the various guises which has been worn by our man of the (not quite half) hour.New album rehearsal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u73AGFGipA8Pink & Brown live in Brooklyn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aqwzweFqjcZeigenbock Kopf https://vimeo.com/7974470Extreme Elvis https://vimeo.com/7974466Sex with a Man - zeigenbock kopf https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6ooQdr-98IBlack Pearl - Pink & Brown https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0caFIIAqiETunnel - Pink & Brown https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvX98wEQiYYSupport the show (https://teespring.com/stores/the-new-dad-rock)
Bee Bee Sea - "Daily Jobs," a 2020 single on Wild Honey Records. Italian garage punk act Bee Bee Sea abide by a succinct mantra: “When there's no good shit around, you better form a band.” That spirit exudes through the ramshackle, PA system shaking riffs the band has been churning out since releasing their self-titled debut in 2015. Their latest single, “Daily Jobs,” shrieks and howls like a sugar-rushed younger sibling demanding you give up the controller and give them their turn on the Super Nintendo. Jagged riffs mutate into wobbly, brain-twisters, and stabbing rhythms akin to the visceral tones of bands like Oh Sees and Together Pangea. In the frantic fury of the song are endless melodic hooks that will rattle in your skull and fuel your own rebellious spirit. Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show.

Whether you call his band Thee Oh Sees, Oh Sees, or OCS, there's no denying John Dwyer's prolific musical output. From garage bands in Providence to noise rock in San Francisco to his current jam in Los Angeles, John has been doing it his own way, including the creation of his own music label, to churn out an abundance of albums. John talks with Marc about the music he makes, Ty Segall, Mitch Hedberg, Cuba, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, rock and roll drug casualties, and what it was like to play a concert where a hole opened up in the floor.
