My guest this week is Academy Award nominee actor, Gary Busey. Filmed live in my home, Gary was generous to share Highlights from his career, personal life and his wonderful "Buseyisms". Please enjoy the vignettes and stories with Gary Busey. In 1966, Gary Busey left Tulsa Oklahoma, to make it big as a singing drummer in Hollywood. The band acquired moderate success playing gigs along the Sunset Strip opening for Sly and the Family Stone and various other bands. His band, Carp, was signed to Epic Records and was given a moderate signing bonus to cut their album. When the band broke up, Gary didn't give up and went on to audition for television and film roles after studying with James Best in Studio City. Gary's tenacity landed him roles as guest stars in such television shows as Gunsmoke and Baretta. Gary's standout performance in A Star Is Born got the attention of Dustin Hoffman who hired him along with his son Jake for the film Straight Time. On the heels of hype, Gary landed the second lead in Big Wednesday, now a cult classic surf film and immediately after, he landed the lead role in The Buddy Holly Story, which garnered him critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for best actor in 1978. His pivotal performance as a villain in Lethal Weapon earned him the attention of a new generation, and the concept of being hired to play villains.Watch the Podcast on YouTube | Read the DiariesHost, Author of Diary of an Actress,. For this episode, I and Todd Liebenow of Forgotten Filmcast, had a great time discussing two films in which ex-cons try to go the straight and narrow…or do they? Join Ethan as he breaks down the Denver Nuggets incredible comeback win tonight against the Los Angeles Lakers 101-99. Jamal Murray hit a beautiful buzzer-beater over Anthony Davis to complete the comeback over the Lakers. For someone who was having as poor of a game as he was, the team had complete trust in Jamal Murray to take some big shots in the 4th quarter and then take the biggest shot of the game. There was no doubt that when Jamal Murray took that shot, it was going in the second it left his hand. His poor shooting game goes out the window with that shot. The Nuggets improve to 2-0 in the series as they head to Los Angeles attempting to improve to 3-0 on Thursday. The Lakers actually played really well tonight, with Anthony Davis scoring 32 points, LeBron scoring 26 points, and Russell scoring 23. So their big three combined for 81 points tonight, but it just was not enough. Even with a poor shooting game for the Denver Nuggets, it did not matter. The Denver Nuggets absolutely broke the Lakers with this win tonight. It's a bonus episode! In this second edition of Special Features, Felicia is joined by Darragh McGrath, who you might recognize as the show's very first guest (Ace In The Hole). They discuss the way in which Ulu Grosbard allows the actors performances to lead the story, but following them with static camera movements, and never forcing the audience into a specific emotion. Felicia also mentions how she first managed to come across this film, and Darragh may or may not be offended by it. In and out of jail is the latest theme. Robert Mitchum, a show favorite, once again does not disappoint in "The Friends of Eddie Coyle" (1973). Mitchum is supported by a stellar cast and a tight script. "Straight Time" (1978) is a little known Dustin Hoffman movie with him.a different kind of role - a man fresh out of prison who soon realizes that the deck is stacked against him. Any film that has M. Emmett Walsh, Harry Dean Stanton and Gary Busey in it has to be good, right? Nuclear Annihilation is the theme this weak. First, "On the beach provide a yawning stare into oblivion. We suggest some ways it could be spiced up (hint/: Ava Gardner is involved). Next up, Sidney Lumet's "Fail Safe" manages to do a lot with just old guys talking in rooms (26:34). Probably not in Lumet's top 5, but it entertains to the last scene. And we learn never to cross Walter Matthau. Next week: In and Out of Jail w/ The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973) and Straight Time (1978).Have your own recommendations? The fifth film in our Stranger Than Fiction cycle is Sidney Lumet's provocative bank heister, Dog Day Afternoon (1975).Special Guest: Good friend of the show and dedicated film nerd, Riley. Dog Day Afternoon is certainly a film you hear about before you ever see it. The film has had a stellar reputation since its release in the mid 1970s. It is considered one of Sidney Lumet's most important and best films. As we approach the film's 50th anniversary, we reappraised both what is on the screen and what happened in real life, not all of which is easy to reconcile with the aura of prestige surrounding the film. As we explore about how true life overlaps with fiction, Dog Day Afternoon becomes hornet's nest of contradiction, exploitation, and high art craftsmanship. Featuring stellar performances from Al Pacino and John Cazale, we face the question that always arises when great stories are told about terrible people: can we separate art from reality? For our chaser film, we reclaim a lost 70s classic, Straight Time. Dripping in 70s malaise and alienation, Dustin Hoffman plays a man on the edge of all things prudent.
