Discussing the documentary “What Haunts Us”
It's not spooky houses. It's not scary campfire tales. What Haunts Us is a traumatic look at the strange history of suicides at the acclaimed college preparatory, Porter Gaud in Charleston, SC. A bad seed and the administration that allowed him to flourish--at the expense of innocent lives. https://linktr.ee/alldocdup Make sure to follow the podcast on Twitter (@alldocdup) & Instagram (@alldocduppod) for funny memes, nonsense and clues/clips of the documentaries we plan on reviewing! Eddie Fischer was a charismatic teacher who ruled the halls of an elite prep school in Charleston, South Carolina. He also harbored a terrifying secret that left shame and heartbreak in his wake. Director Paige Tolmach was a student at that school. Three decades later, Tolmach decided to tell the story of how Fischer shattered so many lives without being detected. Her film, "What Haunts Us," was released in 2018 and earned an Emmy nomination for Exceptional Merit In Documentary Filmmaking.
Today's guest is a former attorney who spent his career representing victims of sexual abuse in civil litigation. David Flowers wrote Taming the Lion Tamers about the South Carolina case of convicted pedophile Eddie Fischer, and the people who protected him for decades. David Flowers is a former attorney who spent his career representing victims of sexual abuse in civil litigation. David wrote Taming the Lion Tamers about the South Carolina case of convicted pedophile Eddie Fischer, and the people who protected him for decades. It’s a powerful story, and is the same case on which the Emmy-nominated documentary film What Haunts Us is based. David fought for victims for decades, using story to their advantage. Now he works to hold people in power who protect perpetrators responsible for their part in these stories. Eddie Fischer was a teacher at Porter-Gaud, an elite private school in Charleston, South Carolina, for ten years. He was also a serial pedophile. Shortly after he was hired, administrators at the school learned about his sexual interest in young boys but did nothing to stop him. Fischer molested dozens of boys at the school. When they were finally confronted by the parents of a victim, the administrators allowed Fischer to resign quietly and then recommended him for employment at other schools in Charleston where he went on to molest more students for another fifteen years before he was finally arrested. This is the true story of how Fischer was finally stopped and the determined efforts by some of Fischer’s victims to expose the truth about Porter-Gaud’s role in enabling, supporting, and advancing Fischer’s criminal career which spanned four decades. Utilizing court transcripts and first-hand accounts, David shares the innovative and unconventional strategies, coupled with the remarkable courage of the victims, which exposed and defeated the arrogance of the school and its grossly negligent administrators. With the daily breaking news about mogul Harvey Weinstein and the growing charges of sexual harassment that has now permeated his life and the nation as a whole, this film is even more important. WHAT HAUNTS US tells the real story behind a town whose silence lead to the suicides of a disturbing number of victims. This film is a cautionary tale for parents and their children and a horrifying example of what happens when one stays quiet about sexual abuse/molestation. WHAT HAUNTS US tells the story about the 1997 class of Porter Gaud High School in Charleston, South Carolina that graduated 49 boys. Within the last 35 years, six of these boys committed suicide. Filmmaker Tolmach graduated from Porter Gaud, and now she digs deep with this film in discovering the dark secrets that have lingered and haunted this community that she so loves. The six boys that committed suicide featured in the film didn't have to die if they would have spoken out and not remained quiet about what had happened to them. However, the shame associated with this nightmare often weighs more on the victims - only to keep them silent. WHAT HAUNTS US is not a new story, but it is the continuing common tale of sexual abuse, molestation, shame and a community's silence so that "no one rocks the boat" rings all too true to this day. Until, we as concerned people speak up, these crimes against innocent victims will continue. WHAT HAUNTS US is directed by Paige Goldberg Tolmach and produced by Frank Marshall and Matt Tolmach. It is one of the new non-fiction films coming from THE KENNEDY/MARSHALL COMPANY DOCUMENTARY DIVISION. WHAT HAUNTS US will be screening at DOC NYC on November 13th at the IFC CENTER
