Et pas seulement les compétences de son personnage, mais ses compétences propres, en particulier ses compétences sociales, et ses compétences cognitives. Galina Brok-Belsova, who just died this past August, was the very last known member Night Witches - the Russian female aviation regiments that helped to turn the tide of World War II. Certainly some of the bravest women we've ever covered on the podcast, the Night Witches struck fear into the hearts of German soldiers - and Galina was no exception. Enlisting at 16 and flying her first combat mission at 18, Galina would end up flying 36 combat missions and receiving the Order of Lenin and a personal thank you note from Stalin himself. Listen now to hear more of Galina's story! — A Broad is a woman who lives by her own rules. Broads You Should Know is the podcast about the Broads who helped shape our world! No A.I. voices are ever used in the show.IN THIS EPISODE: During World War II, a squadron of crop duster-style planes flown by Soviet female pilots were used as bombers to terrorize Nazi troops. They were so terrifying to the enemy they earned the nickname “Night Witches.” (The Night Witches) *** The jackalope is a mythical animal – so why do so many people claim to have seen it, even in modern times? (Horned Hares) *** There are places all over the world even today where, during a wedding ceremony, you might hear the reverend say the words, “Do you take this corpse to be your lawfully wedded husband?” (Beyond the Grave Nuptials) *** An old grudge between a detective and a reporter led to one of the strangest—and most damning—fake news stories of all-time. A story that nearly ruined Lizzie Borden. (The Lizzy Borden Newspaper Hoax) *** In 1948, sightings of mysterious green lights in the skies of Los Alamos, New Mexico and the Sandia atomic-weapons laboratories and other sensitive military installations had the U.S. Government extremely worried. That means they the green balls of fire weren't from America – so what were they? Transcript It is still designer commentary season on Dice Exploder, and today I'm talking with Jason Morningstar (Fiasco, Night Witches, a million other games) about Northfield: a game we co-designed about when Jesse James tried to rob the bank in my home town, we shot the hell out of him and his gang, and then we started an annual small town fair to celebrate our victory. You play as both a member of the James-Younger gang and as a person in the present day portraying your gang member in a reenactment. It's a weird little game, much like its subject matter, and surprisingly personal to me (Jason was not surprised). On this episode, we break down the process of our collaboration and how we feel about the results (very positively). More than any other designer commentary I've done, I hope you check out this game. I'm really proud of it. You can get it on the Bully Pulpit Patreon now for $5. Jason Morningstar is perhaps the iconic Indie RPG Game Designer in my mind. He is the legendary creator of Fiasco, one of my favorite games of all time, which continues to inspire me to this very day. He also created many other masterpieces like Night Witches, Durance, Skeletons and many others. He is also an educator, and, more importantly, he is generous, kind, and supportive with other in our community. This chat was only supposed to last for 1 hour but we managed to stretch it to a little over 1 hours and a half and I with we could have gone for another 2 hours, but I had to go. Good news is Jason enjoyed the chat and is willing to come back! We talked about process, art, creativity, curiosity, the constant impulse to find novelty, the search of the weirdness in the mundane. We talked about other games, creators, and art that inspires us. Jason also shared lots of stories and pieces of wisdom we can all learn from, which I am always seeking. This is one of my favorite episodes. I am a big fan of Jason's work. It was an honor to talk to him about it. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did so... Let's get weird with Jason Morningstar! On this episode, we celebrate Women's History Month with fiction and nonfiction about women's history, one of the prompts on the Winter-Spring 2024 Books & Bites Bingo reading challenge. From a graphic novel about Soviet women fighter pilots to a page-turning book about the evolution of female bodies, we'll show you that there's nothing dull about women's history. Michael's PickThe Night Witches is a graphic novel written by Garth Ennis and illustrated by Russ Braun. During World War II, the Soviet Union formed the 588th Night Bomber Regiment, recruiting women to fly night missions, bombing the invading Nazis as they cut deeper into Russia. The Nazis came to dub them the “Nachthexen” or “Night Witches.”The novel follows Anna Kharkova, a fictional Night Witch. It opens as Anna is recruited to join the 588th regiment with her friend and gunner, Zoya. If you're a World War II history buff or a fan of military history, you might enjoy this powerful story.Pairing: A glass of Kompot, homemade fruit juice enjoyed by many Russian and Ukrainian families. Carrie's PickEve: How the Female Body Drove 200 Million Years of Human Evolutionby Cat Bohannon upends popular and scientific belief to argue that female bodies have been the primary agents of humans' evolutionary change. Bohannon builds her case over nine well researched and lively chapters: Milk, Womb, Perception, Legs, Tools, Brain, Voice, Menopause, and Love.Pairing: Chocolate Covered Frozen Bananas in honor of our matriarchal primate relatives.Jacqueline's PickThe Lovely War by Julie Berry tells the love stories of two WWI couples through the frame of the Goddess of Love's own love story. She seeks to answer the age-old question: "Why are Love and War eternally drawn to one another?" but her quest for a conclusion that will satisfy her jealous husband, Hephaestus, uncovers a multi-threaded tale of prejudice, trauma, and music, revealing that War is no match for the power of Love.Pairing: The war-time treat Lemon Sponge Cake. It's made with rice flour instead of wheat, which was in short supply during World War I. He loves vanilla pudding, basketball, and sleeping. I gotta say that what got my attention to Paweł's work was Corp Borg and his critique to corporations and all the shit related to them. That immediately made a connection with me, and when I saw the way the book looked and the awesome and brutal stuff you get to do, I was hooked. And not to mention all the creators I've met from Poland so far are great people! On this chat with Paweł we get to know him a little bit better. We talk about his journey as a Game Designer, what dire circumstances lead him there, and how these turned into something unexpected. We talk about his previous experiences, works and how that all relate to the games he makes now. We talked about inspiration, other artists, the weird stuff that he likes, and how very little things makes him happy (but how valuable those things are as well). We've shared quite a bit about witches through history on this show, but there are also some incredible stories about more modern day witches that are very much worth exploring. In this episode we introduce you to The Night Witches, an all-female squadron of Russian bomber pilots who ran thousands of daring bombing raids with little more than wooden planes and the cover of night. It's an incredible story about a group of courageous and skilled female aviators who left an indelible mark on history during the 1940s.*Curious about how to liberate your inner witch and experience more pleasure, turn on and a deeper connection to life? On this week's episode of History Gap, Lucy and Jorja consider the role of magic and superstition during World War 2 as Lucy tells the story of Russia's ‘Night Witches' - an all-female air division who were feared greatly by the Nazi's and Hitler himself. The girls also discuss the sexism women experience during and after the war effort and theorise how these brave women must have felt.
Come join the new Wargames To Go (and Boardgames To Go) discord server https://discord.gg/vxEG9bMPdx One week ago I was at my first SDHistCon. I had a good time, would like to share that experience via this audio convention report...and still there manages to be a slender but worthwhile connection to my Wars of Scotland subject. For anyone who only found me for the convention report, I start with a brief overview of me & my podcast(s). Then I get into the convention itself, some of the great people I chatted with, and the remainder of the episode is a rundown of all the games I played. I'm covering them in roughly descending order of their wargame bona fides. So the first ones are the most traditionally wargame-y, followed by more & more titles that go from consims to general history games, ultimately finishing with a few light euro-style boardgames. The first game discussed happens to the one that connects to my current exploration on this podcast, the Wars of Scotland. Border Reivers is a game I could only experience at a convention, so I seized the opportunity. The next Wargames To Go podcast should have a lot more Scotland in it, some of those films I mentioned, and is expected to wrap up this topic. Then it will be time to look ahead to the next one. I've got some ideas. Thanks to the entire SDHist board that makes this event happen. Harold Buchanon may be the visible face of the organization, but I know he'd want to point out over a dozen board members, plus other advisors, that make it all work. Harold & I are getting a demo of Night Witches from designers Liz Davidson and David Thompson My new favorite Canadian, podcaster Grant Linneberg from Pushing Cardboard Another demo, this of Molly House. Taking a break from the heavy-hearted witch trial content for a minute - we revisit one of our favorite BYSK episodes about a different kind of witch - THE NIGHT WITCHES! Dubbed the nachthexen by the german troops who heard nothing but a WHOOSH before their camps went up in flames - The Night Witches were a hastily trained, poorly equipped, all-female Russian Air Force unit who struck fear into the hearts of Nazis and turned the tide of World War II. They were fearless and brilliant and their story will take your breath away. — A Broad is a woman who lives by her own rules. On this week's episode the team have decamped to Wiltshire but are no less hungry for the victory as they continue to chase the provenance of historical objects both real and metaphorical. On October 8th, 1941, with Stalingrad surrounded, Leningrad besieged, and the Nazis making new gains on Russian territory every day, Joseph Stalin ordered the creation of three new Air Force regiments... the first female aviation military regiments in world history. Led by famed civilian aviator Marina Raskova, these young women, most of whom were between the ages of 17 and 26, would have to transform from flight hobbyists to killer soldiers. The 588th Night Bombers Regiment would earn the nickname “the Night Witches” from the German soldiers they terrorized in the darkness. Flying no-frills wooden planes with ill-fitting uniforms and no parachutes, most runs would happen with three planes, the first two meant to draw attention and enemy fire, with the third being the one to drop the bomb. What made this so dangerous is the fact that the third plane, to avoid detection, would have to cut their engines and glide over their target as quietly as possible. Despite the danger, the Night Witches regiment alone would fly around 30,000 sorties and have 23 of their pilots awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union— and they would definitively help change the tide of the war against the Nazis. The badass story of the Night Witches and their female fighter counterparts, this week, on Timesuck. Want to apply for the Cummins Family Scholarship fund? Orna Merchant learns how, during World War Two, a desperate Soviet Union created three all-female aerial combat units. The most celebrated of these was the 588th Night Bomber Regiment. Using Polikarpov Po-2 wooden biplanes, as the aviators approached their target they would cut their engines and glide in to drop their bombs. The eerie sight and sound of this – added to the discovery of them having all women crews - led German forces to nickname them ‘Nachthexen' - the Night Witches.
