*SURPRISE!* You might be asking yourself -- why are Julie And The Podcasters dropping a new episode on a random Friday?  Because it's our super special, Julie And The Podcasters After Hours Special: Marvel Edition, that's why!  Here's the (deep) dish: We finished recording our usual Julie And The Phantoms talk, forgot to hit the "Stop Recording" button, and kept chatting candidly about Kat's newfound journey into the MCU.  When Alicia began to edit our regularly scheduled programming, she realized this off-mic conversation would actually make a great bonus episode! So here we are with our first-ever After Hours Special. The conversation is casual, the topics a little more risque, and we are definitely at our most unfiltered.  We hope you enjoy this sassy little extra episode, and if you like what you hear and want us to talk about more things beyond Julie And The Phantoms, be sure to let us know on social media!  And, as usual, don't forget to TELL YOUR FRIENDS! The Coronavirus Quarantine seems to have a lot of couples struggling with spending so much non-stop time together. Ben from Arlington has written to Fitz for help with his girlfriend Alicia because he says she talks in baby talk. He says at the beginning of their relationship he thought it was kinda cute and flirty but now she does it all the time and he is uncomfortable and embarrassed. He claims she calls him “Benny-Wenny” and sometimes even does that in front of his friends. And now that they are both in the house all time, it’s really making him crazy. When Alicia comes on, it turns out she actually just has a naturally baby-ish voice so it’s not like she’s doing it on purpose. We all think Ben is way over-reacting until Alicia starts to get a little upset and suddenly someone’s got an owie! Do the P1’s think she is doing it on purpose, or is there something a little…different…going on?

What is a women's health physical therapist and do you need one? Why do women believe we must just put up with certain physical + medical issues after giving birth? And what information do we need about postpartum sex, the pelvic floor,  and leaking? Podcast guest, women's health physical therapist, and mom Alicia Willoughby gives us the scoop on the importance of understanding, caring, and getting professional medical help for your postpartum and menopausal body. Whether you had a baby last week, last month, or 30 years ago, you need to hear this episode about an aspect of women’s health you don’t hear much about.    How Alicia Got Started As a physical therapist, Alicia treated a pregnant woman with lower back pain and recognized that the treatment made a significant difference in the woman’s life. She realized there was a whole population of women not getting care. Physical therapists simply aren’t trained in women’s health; students receive one day of instruction on pregnancy and one lecture on the pelvic floor.  After undergoing extra training on pregnancy and post-partum to serve this underserved population, Alicia marketed herself to ob/gyns.  When Alicia had her first child, she felt like she was in a body not her own. While her daughter had recurring appointments to track her development and progress, no one guided Alicia into how to reconnect with her own body. Alicia went back to work at an orthopedic clinic and most female patients were mothers. She noticed that many experienced orthopedic issues because they never received postpartum care.  Now Alicia has her own practicing “treating it all,” and believes she’s filling a void in the medical system because postpartum is a really vulnerable time.    Why Women Think We Just Have to Put Up with Certain Medical Issues Alicia believes the reason women accept certain medical frustrations is multifactorial: Our medical system is not designed to care for moms.  Generations pass down their own experiences so we accept certain problems as  part of life.  The fitness community knows women leak when they do jumping jacks, but encourages us to keep going. Our peers reassure us that we’re all experiencing the same concerns so it must be normal. At six weeks, you are discharged by your OB-GYN into the world, but no one is watching out for you.   The Truth About Postpartum Sex For many women, postpartum sex doesn’t feel good, it hurts, or they’re anxious before they even try. Alicia says it’s important to reconnect to your body first.  In postpartum healing, we hear a lot about fitness and getting back to work, but we forgot what brings us joy and makes us feel like ourselves.    What’s Going on with Leaking? Leaking (or incontinence) is involuntarily losing urine, gas or stool. The pelvic floor holds back our bodily fluid so when we leak, this muscle group isn’t doing its job because it’s (1) weak or (2) it’s overactive. To determine the source of leaking, women must be evaluated by a pelvic floor physical therapist.  The more your muscles are stretched, the less likely they hold the fluid in. Leaking is common, but it’s not normal. Leaking is a yellow flag; it’s your body telling you things aren’t right.   Alicia Gives the Scoop About the Pelvic Floor The pelvic floor is a triangular group of 14 muscles that run from pubic bone to tail tailbone, and butt bone to butt bone. There are three layers to your pelvic floor: two are the “squeezers” and one layer holds up your pelvic bones and organs.  What an Appointment with a Women’s Health Physical Therapist is Like Alicia includes these elements in her exams: Posture assessment Balance exercises Full abdomen assessment Pelvic floor exam Prolapse check   The Medical System and How it Cares for Women Alicia sees in her patients that many women feel neglected and disappointed by the current system.  What we may think of as inconveniences are much bigger issues than we think they are.   Connect with Alicia Willougby: Website Facebook Instagram The Postpartum Wellness Solution To find a women’s health physical therapist in your area, go here. Do you remember when you first started your business? How about your first card? Do you ever go back and look at work you were doing in those early stages and wonder, what was I thinking?! I know from experience it can be cringe-worthy or just hilarious, but that’s the beauty of the business journey! Today on Proof to Product we’re welcoming Paper Camp alum, Alicia Heater of Slightly Stationery, to share her business beginning. When Alicia started Slightly Stationery, it was with the belief that women be encouraging and loving to each other through the timeless art of handwritten notes (Oh, and that these handwritten notes should make people chuckle, and also be super cute, too.) Today, continuing this spirit of mutual support, a portion of all Slightly Stationery proceeds go to the Malala Fund to help girls around the world receive a good education. On Episode 109, Alicia talks about how she started her first line, the changes she made along the way and what she learned at Paper Camp. We discuss the financial challenges of business and why giving back is a key  part of Slightly Stationery’s mission and values. Alicia also shares the importance of taking advice, not being afraid to start over, and what it’s like today to have cards in more than 400 stores throughout the U.S. including Paper Source and Anthropologie. We hope you enjoy this fun episode, and that it inspires you to look back at how far you’ve come in your business journey too!   ON TODAY’S EPISODE: What prompted Alicia to start her stationery line Why she pivoted from custom wedding invitations to greeting cards Following your heart and making decisions based on your strengths Starting from scratch Taking advice and knowing where to improve How to hone in on your audience When Slightly Stationery releases new product Mistakes Alicia made when she first started with wholesale Changes she made to her business after Paper Camp The importance of patience and persistence Differences between big and small company buying cycles    The steps Alicia took so she could start pulling a salary from her company   How she chose a philanthropic organization to give back to What Alicia is most proud of in her business KEY TAKE-AWAYS:   “I was doing a lot of custom work and not making any money on it, so I wondered is there's something out there that I can design one time and sell it a whole bunch times?”  - Alicia Heater “It's an experiment in those early years in business. How do I want to structure this? How can I make it sustainable for the long term? And profitable and make it my full-time gig.” - Katie Hunt “When you’re buying a card in a store, you're buying it because this is perfect for this one person. I had this thought of like I'm trying to design for everybody, so I wasn't designing those kind of cards.” -  Alicia Heater “I scrapped the idea of trying to design cards that are going to be so generic and good for everybody, because then they're not really special for any one person, and those are the ones that sell.” -  Alicia Heater “When it feels like you’re selling the same thing as everybody else, you need to really find what's unique about your products, and really promote that.” - Katie Hunt “When I turned that filter off of my ideas, it opened up a lot of things.”  - Alicia Heater “People will pick up a card for the way it looks, if it’s cute, but they'll buy it because of what it says.” -  Alicia Heater “I had no idea, so I went and did a bunch of Google searches on like how to sell wholesale and learned so much more about that when I did Paper Camp” -  Alicia Heater “Right after Paper Camp, I went out and was working harder at going to get more reps rather than going to get more stores, and it really empowered me to go do the right things. It was a chain reaction.” -  Alicia Heater “Now they're emailing me, and Anthropologie's like, ‘Oh, this card’s doing so well for us. Can we carry some more stuff, too?’ and I'm like, hmm. Let me think about that for a second. Yes!” -  Alicia Heater “Being able to have a business where I can do what I like doing, and it pays the bills, too, is really incredible, and I feel really blessed to have that, so I'm proud of that.”  - Alicia Heater “Even when you're not making much money, you can still give back.” -  Alicia Heater LINKS Website: http://www.slightlystationery.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/slightlystationery Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/slightlystationery/ Pinterest: http://pinterest.com/slightlypaper     SUBSCRIBE To subscribe on iOS, go to the iTunes page and subscribe to Proof to Product. While on her Olympic journey, Professional Athlete Alicia Malcolm Anderson honored me with an interview about her quest to qualify and compete with Team Jamaica in Beach Volleyball for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.   At 38 she decided to pursue her Olympic dream and shares what it means to be in pursuit of such an incredible goal at her age and the poignant source of the legacy of her determination.   Qualifying for the Olympics though is paved with challenges; from managing her family in Canada while traveling all around the world, to competing hard to win the qualifying rounds with other Olympic hopefuls, while keeping pace with her considerably younger teammates, who no doubt, have less worldly responsibilities.   It's the stuff that dreams are made of; moving and inspirational!   This is journey of faith and belief is the model I have come to love and share with you in my podcast!   When Alicia and I get down to business with some tough questions, it is her seasoned skill, wisdom and humility that really speak. On mastery~ "You don't have to be the best -just find your inner champion. It's about meeting the challenge, not being perfect. "     Please listen in and stay tuned as this story unfolds!

Today I have the pleasure of speaking with Alicia Cuello, a National Conference Speaker, a facilitator, and coach who specializes in non-verbal communication. She has spent over 20 years reading and interpreting body language and she is the host of the popular podcast series Body Language for Sales Success. She earned her Master of Human Resource Management degree from the University of Houston. When Alicia describes her unimaginable childhood it might make you think that she and her four sisters would never have amounted to anything. But when you see the businesswoman Alicia is today, you truly understand how resilient she is in every aspect of her life and career. In fact, she still uses some of the skills she learned as a young girl to propel her forward in her industry. Despite Alicia’s past, she has been able to overcome all obstacles with the help of women mentors early in her career. It was the first time someone cared about what she could accomplish and she bent over backwards to be the best that she could be, for them. Her goal is to make the world a better place through a combination of HR and body language. Playing Small Moment Alicia’s mentor, Lynn told her, “You remind me of myself but you are screwing it up.” Lynn was a Vice President and the head of nursing at her place of employment. She would meet with Alicia one-on-one and help her to get her act together. Alicia says “Lynn saw something in me. She made me believe I had so much more to offer.” Alicia’s small moment happened when she allowed Lynn to help her believe in herself. The Wake Up Call Alicia had spent 20+ years in Human Resources where the pay was good but the work was starting to crush her soul. She stayed a while longer, knowing she wanted out. So, she made the decision to get a business coach and with his help she started Underlying Communications and eventually left corporate America. Style of Leadership Alicia isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty. She steps back to observe and absorb how the game is being played before she makes a leadership decision. She believes power can be found in silence. When she is ready to effectively lead, she leads by doing. She feels more like one of the pack than someone who stands at the helm barking orders. Current Business Challenge Alicia says maneuvering through all the noise is her current business challenge. She has been sharing on all of the social platforms and even video-blogging for some time, but the time has come for her to create proposals and network herself and her business. She says the process is like an additional full-time job. What Are You Excited About? Alicia is excited about a new opportunity to give a presentation to two large, national HR organizations in San Bernardino. It gives her the opportunity to turn a bad situation into something that benefits people.
