The Warm Up Track is back! Season Two starts with a Jamaica Special. We're joined by Olympic 100 hurdles bronze medallist Megan Tapper, and reigning Commonwealth 400 hurdles champion, Janieve Russell. Why will this year's Worlds feel like a home from home for Jamaican athletes? Who was a Champs Legend? Who was on course to be an Olympic gymnast? Plus, who's always wanted to be a flight attendant? There's also more serious discussion about why Jamaica's outstanding female sprinters should have been celebrated more during the Usain Bolt years, not just in the years since his retirement. Devon Harris always had a passion for sport and dreamed of competing in the Olympics as a teenager. He spent his childhood in Haughton, a rural district in Saint Elizabeth, Jamaica, but moved to Olympic Gardens in Kingston, Jamaica. "The thing that I would say kept me sane was school. I loved school. ... I loved to play and guess where I could play? At school. So I discovered sports. ... The thing I loved about sports was regardless of what your situation was off the field or on the field, man, it's my heart against yours; it's me against you and what you can bring to the table." Harris said he was 15 years old when he had dreamed of being an Olympian. "It's 1979 and I'm 15 years old and it was a year before the Moscow Olympic Games and ABC Wide World of Sports — American TV — had a series called Road to Moscow, and they showcased athletes from around the world, different nationalities and disciplines," he said. "And what I saw in that series were these very average and ordinary people, but they had extraordinary dreams and they had an equally extraordinary desire to achieve those dreams." Before pursuing his dream to become an Olympian, Harris enlisted in the army and in 1987, he was asked to try out of the first-ever Jamaican bobsledding team. "We do this in Jamaica, called the Pushcart Derby, and two Americans who lived in Jamaica saw that and thought it looked like bobsledding," he said. "They came to the army looking for athletes, and that's when I initially heard and as I mentioned, I was not interested. ... I thought it was the most absurd, ridiculous idea ever conceived by a man and I remember saying nobody could ever get me to go on one of those things until my Colonel suggested that I try out for the team." With the idea in his head, Harris tried out of the team and earned one of four sports; he was going to attend the 1988 winter Olympics. "That day I was literally flying around the beach. I just like, 'Oh,' so I was like, 'Whoa, I'm on the team, right?' Not officially, but yeah, I really felt like Superman," he said. It was the Caribbean country's first Winter games, but hardly its last. In the years since, Jamaica has appeared at every Winter Olympics outside the 2006 Games in Turin, Italy. Team Jamaica will be competing in the 2022 winter games; it has qualified for the four-man bobsled and two other bobsled events in Beijing. On this episode of What happened to...? Harris describes his journey to the 1988 Winter Olympics and Erica speaks with the current Jamaican bobsled team, which is looking to build upon the success of previous teams. “I couldn't hear. I couldn't think. He was very matter of fact. He said, ‘You have a complete medial meniscus root tear. That means your meniscus tore off the bone. You need surgery — not today, but in the next couple days. Tokyo isn't an option.'” Professional Puma-sponsored runner Aisha Praught Leer was living every athlete's dream this summer. She'd secured her spot on Jamaica's Olympic team, and was training in St. Moritz with her Team Boss teammates Emma Coburn and Cory McGee. She was feeling fit. Fast. Ready to race the 1500 in Tokyo. But then, just a few days before boarding the plane to Japan, Aisha was warming up before a track workout when she felt a pop in her knee. That pop turned out to be a torn meniscus. ("Like meniscus fully dangling off the bone," Aisha explains.) In this conversation, Aisha reflects on that day at the track in Chiavenna, and talks about what it's like when all of your dreams are ripped away from you in an instant. She talks about her decision to race anyway, and talks about what she says was the hardest part of this injury. (It wasn't the race. It was calling her loved ones.) Plus, Aisha — who is now two weeks post-op — discusses her surgery, her recovery, and her big dreams for what's next. SPONSOR: Oiselle — Use code ONTHERUN for 15% off. We're marking Pride Month with Team Jamaica swimmer Michael Gunning, who's making waves not just in the pool but as a global advocate for LGBT+ rights. Gunning came out in 2018 on the TV show the Bi Life, two years after switching allegiance from Great Britain to Jamaica. In this special episode, he talks about the positive reaction to coming out, how it's improved his performances in the pool, and gives advice to anyone who's scared of being open about their sexuality:"Talk to someone", he says. "Once you tell one person it just gets so much easier and it's a massive burden, a relief that you just let go of." Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This Olympic love story is one of the greatest that will broadcast live during the postponement period of the 2020 Tokyo games. Although being participants of the friendly rivalry between Team USA and Team JAMAICA, these two Olympians still chose to unite as one under marriage. Shevon is a Jamaican 400 Meter Hurdler and a two time Olympian (Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008). Although she was injured prior the London 2012 Olympics, she attended the games as a Puma ambassador. Shevon subsequently retired in 2016. Jamie Nieto is a USA High Jumper and also a two time Olympian (Athens 2004 and London 2012). Patrick McDonald (The Parrothead Podcast, UCB Maude Night) tells the story of how he got to witness the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City as a middle schooler and collected some hella sick memorabilia (shoutout to Mitt Romney and Team Jamaica).
While on her Olympic journey, Professional Athlete Alicia Malcolm Anderson honored me with an interview about her quest to qualify and compete with Team Jamaica in Beach Volleyball for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. At 38 she decided to pursue her Olympic dream and shares what it means to be in pursuit of such an incredible goal at her age and the poignant source of the legacy of her determination. Qualifying for the Olympics though is paved with challenges; from managing her family in Canada while traveling all around the world, to competing hard to win the qualifying rounds with other Olympic hopefuls, while keeping pace with her considerably younger teammates, who no doubt, have less worldly responsibilities. It's the stuff that dreams are made of; moving and inspirational! This is journey of faith and belief is the model I have come to love and share with you in my podcast! When Alicia and I get down to business with some tough questions, it is her seasoned skill, wisdom and humility that really speak. On mastery~ "You don't have to be the best -just find your inner champion. It's about meeting the challenge, not being perfect. " Please listen in and stay tuned as this story unfolds!
