I've known When I Grow Up Coach Michelle Ward almost as long as I've been working for myself. So when she emailed me a couple of weeks ago to ask if she could come on the pod to talk about how she'd retired the When I Grow Up Coach brand and gone all-in on her 90-Day Business Launch program, I said: hell yeah! This is a story about wrestling with long-term success and the decision to go a different way. It's also a story about recognizing that, any time you make a big move, things like money and marketing won't magically stay the same. And finally, it's a story about recognizing abundant long-term opportunity over short-term consistency. Now, let's find out What Works for Michelle Ward! Michelle Ward, aka the When I Grow Up Coach, has literally made a career out of staying true to herself, and helping others do the same. Michelle's dream from childhood was to be on Broadway, but after graduating from NYU's Tisch School and going to audition after audition, she realized to her dismay that it was not likely to happen for her. She decided she needed to find something that worked for her—that was true to her creative spirit and fed her soul—and that she wanted to help others do the same. She joined me to tell her story and how it's led her to something unexpectedly perfect for her, and what she learned along the way, from the power of authenticity when auditioning to figuring out what else might meet her creative goals when acting fell through.

I met Michelle Ward (aka: The “When I Grow Up Coach”) almost 10 years ago via her newsletter. It caught my eye while I was stopped at a stop light one day. (bad jen!) After that email I became a fan, and when I moved to NYC (where Michelle lived) I got the chance to work with her in person, and even visit one of her ukulele shows! This lady is an encouraging bag of talents. She’s a business coach, an actress, she plays uke, she writes her own songs, and is the mother is the spunkiest little five year old you’ve ever met! AN EPISODE WHERE WE TALK ABOUT BOOBS...A LOT. Michelle Ward is perhaps one of the most inspiring guests I've have ever had on the show--and this isn’t hyperbole. I mean...I have the coolest off-the-cuff conversations with people so you know this one is good! Michelle is a two-time breast cancer survivor, business coach, and badass parent who uses her emotional and physical struggles with both breast cancer and fertility issues to see what really matters in life. In today’s episode, you’ll learn how Michelle coped with cancer and fertility issues, adopted a child, and began a business coaching other creative and inspirational women to live their dreams! MY THOUGHTS Two-time cancer survivor.Ukulele performer. Judge Judy fanatic. Business coach. Michelle Ward is a true survivor having survived a breast cancer diagnosis not once, but twice! Plus, I worked with her, so I know how awesome she is! Michelle gave her former Nine to Five job notice in the middle of the recession in order to start her own business-- and she never looked back. Her experiences with breast cancer along with her struggles with fertility help her recognize the important stuff in life, which is a lesson we all can learn from.  ARE YOU READY TO GO THERE? _____ MICHELLEWARD, PCC, has been offering dream business guidance for creative women as The When I Grow Up Coach since 2008. This week on the show, I’m super excited to have creative career coach Michelle Ward back as part of the Friendpreneur Series. Michelle has been on 3 times in the past, and we always have a blast (you can find links to the other episodes at the bottom of this post). I think you will love that we talk about some of the challenges of being an entrepreneur, and how she’s recently chosen to refresh and change her coaching offerings. In looking back over her clients and work over the past 10 years, it became apparent that the work she loved and got the most traction with clients is in the “discover, launch, build” season of beginning a creative entrepreneurial business. Here’s what I love about Michelle (and what she shares in this interview) – she’s wildly dedicated to helping entrepreneurs figure out the what and the how of launching a biz. Her passion is really about getting past the road blocks and limiting mindset of a person’s initial creative idea. So many entrepreneur hopefuls have big ideas, but get stuck, and stop, and it’s her mission to help people figure out the ways past and out of the places they are stuck. Knowing that this is the territory Michelle loves – we talked about it a lot. In this chat, Michelle Ward and I talk about: Her 10 years as an entrepreneur and creative career coach How she’s been craving change and got it Her methodology on identifying the foundational programs that she wanted to include in her business, moving forward Her new “Build Your Client Base” program that will be launching in mid-June How to avoid getting stuck in the analysis paralysis (set a timer for 45 minutes, research, make a decision The emotional mind / body connection of running the NY half marathon this year after a cancer diagnosis two years ago As an entrepreneur, you don’t need to reinvent the wheel – that’s why there are genres Lin-Manuel Miranda’s discussion with Sondheim, and why we should keep looking at the new angles on the things we love – it keeps us fresh, and it keeps our followers or fans engaged. Do you have a personal website, a personal business card or a folder of compliments you have received? If not, you should, says this week’s guest expert, Michelle Ward of When I Grow Up Coach. A person is more than their current job title. And often, personal projects and hobbies tell more of your story than your job description does. If you want to stay in the driver’s seat of your career, you should consistently keep up on what is working for you and any wins you have. Create a separate folder (online or on paper) and add any kudos or accolades you receive throughout the course of a year, and update your resume accordingly. This will save you time and frustration during your annual performance review and you will be ready in the event that an unexpected opportunity arises. These resources make it easy to: Track your accomplishments online with Evernote Share information about yourself with About.me Give hiring managers a reason to be interested in you with Branded.me Michelle also advises job seekers to create an elevator pitch about themselves. You are much more than your field of work. When someone asks you what you do, expound on your job title by adding your skills set. This is extremely useful if you are attending a networking event or conference. Remember, conferences are opportunities for learning and connecting. Don’t dread your work! It's my true honor and privilege to share episode 5 with you. It's an interview with Michelle Ward, aka The When I Grow Up Coach. She's a Brooklyn based creative career coach who helps women unlock their dreams and find work that feels like play. In addition to her work as a one on one coach, she has created two courses on Creative Live (Ditch Your Day Job and Create your Dream Career), leads a lively Facebook group, and is the author of the book "The Declaration of You." She's also one of the funniest, liveliest people I've ever met. Michelle and I have known each other for about 3 years, and it is always a total joy to get to spend time with her.  I was her client, and "graduated" from my work with her knowing that I wanted to be an entrepreneur at some point, but admittedly not altogether sure what that would look like. I knew I loved doing retreats and knew I wanted to do more of that, whatever that was. In this hilarious discussion, we chat about her early sparks of joy the 80s (yes, we talk about New Kids on the Block and Kirk Cameron), and a bit about her journey to become the When I Grow Up Coach, after having followed the dream of being in musical theater and graduating from NYU Tisch School of the Arts. Michelle graciously dishes some very solid marketing advice, and I think any entrepreneur will really love what she has to say about finding your niche, activating your own marketing gatekeepers, and being super authentic as you start to build a client base. In this episode we chat about: - Michelle's early love of Debby Gibson and New Kids on the Block - her time in a performing arts high school and getting early acceptance into NYU Tisch School of the Arts - her bridge job, aka the job she held while she was working on getting certified as a life coach and worked in the financial industry - Michelle's thoughts on having a niche and owning who you best work with - ideas on what it's like to be a new entrepreneur, and how to build a business - her recent experience in rebranding her own website - her thoughts on ways to jump start your own joy Related links: Michelle's When I Grow Up Coach website Donate to Michelle's "Avon Walk to End Breast Cancer" team Sign up to join Michelle's webinar coming up October 9th!
