In this episode of Grow a Small Business, host Troy Trewin interviews Jason Kramer from Cultivate discusses his entrepreneurial journey, starting with a graphic design business before founding his current CRM strategy consultancy. He highlights the impressive growth of Cultivate, averaging 15 to 30% annually and expanding his team. Jason shares valuable insights into CRM strategy for nurturing leads and demonstrating marketing ROI, emphasising the importance of understanding your target audience. He also offers advice on key aspects of business growth, including hiring, the significance of work-life balance, and lessons learned from his experiences. Jason also touches upon the importance of good financial management and the "Profit First" methodology. Why would you wait any longer to start living the lifestyle you signed up for? Balance your health, wealth, relationships and business growth. And focus your time and energy and make the most of this year. Let's get into it by clicking here. Troy delves into our guest's startup journey, their perception of success, industry reconsideration, and the pivotal stress point during business expansion. They discuss the joys of small business growth, vital entrepreneurial habits, and strategies for team building, encompassing wins, blunders, and invaluable advice. And a snapshot of the final five Grow A Small Business Questions: What do you think is the hardest thing in growing a small business? According to Jason Kramer, the hardest things in growing a small business are finding quality people who are reliable, dependable experts with good communication skills. He also notes that juggling all the different aspects of the business can be difficult for some, though less so for him due to his organised approach. Reflecting on his early days, Jason would advise himself to seek out those who have experience and made mistakes to learn from them and accelerate success. What's your favorite business book that has helped you the most? Jason Kramer's favourite business book is "Profit First" by Mike Michalowicz. He states that this book has significantly impacted how they manage cash flow in their business using a system of multiple bank accounts. Are there any great podcasts or online learning resources you'd recommend to help grow a small business? Jason Kramer recommends Donald C Kelly's podcast, "The Sales Evangelist", for valuable techniques and ideas. He also finds Jeff Blanto's "Sales Gravy" sometimes interesting. Additionally, Jason's company, Cultivate, offers "Profit Path", a tool with coaching and ebooks for tracking leads and marketing ROI. The "Grow Small Business Podcast" itself, hosted by Troy Trewin, who interviewed Jason, is also a relevant resource, with a past episode featuring Mike Michalowicz, author of "Profit First". What tool or resource would you recommend to grow a small business? Jason Kramer recommends The Sales Evangelist podcast by Donald C. Kelly for practical, actionable sales techniques and Sales Gravy by Jeb Blount for insightful tips on business and selling. He also highlights the importance of mixing in some non-business content for balance, like Conan O'Brien's podcast, which he enjoys for its humor and engaging interviews. What advice would you give yourself on day one of starting out in business? Jason Kramer's advice to his day-one self would be: “It's going to be a hell of a ride, unexpected but worth it.” He emphasizes the importance of learning from those who've gone before — seeking out people who've made mistakes and grown from them, so you can fast-track your own success by avoiding common pitfalls. The Intuitive Customer - Improve Your Customer Experience To Gain Growth
Pricing. It's one of the most critical decisions your business will ever make, yet most people approach it like a finger-in-the-air guessing game. But what if you could tap into psychological principles to not just set prices, but make your customers feel they're getting a great deal? That's what this episode of The Intuitive Customer is all about. Join Colin Shaw and Professor Ryan Hamilton as they break down the fascinating—and sometimes hilarious—world of psychological pricing. From late-night infomercials and $400 bath towels to popcorn buckets and outrageous anchoring techniques, we explore why pricing is more than numbers on a tag—it's a story you tell your customers. Along the way, Ryan reveals the secrets behind charm pricing, scarcity cues, and the “decoy effect,” while Colin shares how early mistakes taught him the importance of understanding customer perception. (Spoiler alert: guesswork is not a strategy.) If you want to understand the psychology behind pricing—and how to use it to improve your bottom line—you'll love this episode. But be warned: you might never look at a price tag the same way again. Best Quote from the Episode: "The price isn't just a number; it's a conversation you're having with your customer. And if you're not telling the right story, someone else will." — Professor Ryan Hamilton Key Takeaways (But You'll Have to Tune In for the Full Insights!): Anchoring: The "Big Daddy" of Pricing Why giving customers a frame of reference can make your prices seem more attractive. Charm Pricing Still Works (But It's Changing) $0.99 vs. $1.00—what's really happening in the customer's mind? The Decoy Effect: Guide Them to the Right Choice How medium popcorns make large popcorns irresistible. Scarcity and Social Proof: The FOMO Effect The subtle art of using “only 2 left!” without annoying your customers. Price Elasticity: Know Who You're Selling To Some customers care deeply about price changes—others don't. Do you know the difference? Signpost Items: First Impressions Matter Why your pricing on milk, batteries, or even AA batteries can shape brand perception. Price Fairness: Handle with Care Overcharging can ruin trust, even if it makes short-term financial sense. Why You Should Listen: Whether you're pricing consulting services, running a retail store, or managing a SaaS product, this episode is packed with actionable insights that will make you rethink how you price—and how your customers perceive your value. Plus, it's full of funny stories, practical advice, and a healthy dose of British-American banter. Don't just set prices. Shape perceptions. To succeed in growing an eCommerce business, we need to get enough people visiting our websites, adding products to their shopping cart and checking out. And we need to do that without over-spending on advertising. However, getting traffic to our websites is harder and more expensive in 2025 than even just a year ago. This is partly due to technology advances in AI: for example, thanks to generative AI, most Google searches now offer up content within the search results themselves, resulting in far fewer clicks outside of Google. But getting website traffic at a profitable price is also being impacted by changes such as Meta's latest announcement where they are removing fact-checking on Facebook and Instagram, amongst other policy changes. All of which leaves many consumers wondering, what content is real and what is artificially generated? What is legitimate and what is a scam? It is harder than ever now for all of us to trust content that we see online - especially in ads. Which can severely impact conversion rates, driving traffic costs up even further. So today on the show, I'm going to share three practically free strategies that I'm using right now in my businesses, to quickly gain the attention and trust of the right people, that are generating huge spikes in website traffic and sales. Anyone can use these strategies, whether you're at an early stage in your business growth trajectory, or you're already at scale.
