The Book of Job: “The Question of the Ages—Why?” Lesson 4c: When Tragedy Strikes, How Should We Respond? Job 1:20-22 (NIV) – [20] At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship [21] and said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised.” [22] In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing. 1. Job grieves. 2. Job worships. 3. Job surrenders. a. Job believes God caused his loss. b. And yet he worships the very one he believes took everything away. Wow! c. Job’s falling down in worship is a sign of surrender and acceptance to the sovereign will of God. d. Job acknowledged that he came into this world empty-handed and will leave it the same way. 1 Timothy 6:7 (NIV) – [7] For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. e. It is true that the Lord gives, for ALL the good in our lives come from Him. James 1:17 (NIV) – [17] Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. f. God even shows kindness to the wicked. Matthew 5:45 (NIV) – [45] He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. g. While Job’s acceptance of the will of God is commendable, he is mistaken as to the identity of the one who has taken away these things from him. Romans 11:29 (AMP) – [29] For God’s gifts and His call are irrevocable. [He never withdraws them when once they are given, and He does not change His mind about those to whom He gives His grace or to whom He sends His call.] Hosea 6:1 (NIV) – [1] “Come, let us return to the LORD. He has torn us to pieces but he will heal us; he has injured us but he will bind up our wounds.” Hebrews 12:5-6 (NIV) – [5] And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons: “My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, [6] because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son.” h. In this case, God is the one who gave, but Satan is the one who took away. i. Satan is a liar and a thief. John 8:44 (NIV) – [44] “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” John 10:10 (NIV) – [10] The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. Ephesians 6:10-12 (NIV) – [10] Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. [11] Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. [12] For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. j. God did not cause Job’s loss, but He did allow it. k. God has the right to give, and God has the right to take away.
The Book of Job: “The Question of the Ages—Why?” Lesson 4b: When Tragedy Strikes, How Should We Respond? Job 1:20-22 (NIV) – [20] At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship [21] and said: “Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised.” [22] In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing. 1. Job grieves. 2. Job worships. a. Job falls down and worships God. b. Worship (shachah) means to bow down, to prostrate oneself, to crouch, to fall down, to humbly beseech, to do reverence, to worship. (Complete Word Study Dictionary) Exodus 4:29-31 (NIV) – [29] Moses and Aaron brought together all the elders of the Israelites, [30] and Aaron told them everything the Lord had said to Moses. He also performed the signs before the people, [31] and they believed. And when they heard that the Lord was concerned about them and had seen their misery, they bowed down and worshiped. c. Worship may seem like the most unnatural, insincere and unrealistic response to tragedy, but it is the best response. d. Job could worship God after these tragedies because worshipping God was Job’s custom. Psalms 95:6-7 (NIV) – [6] Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; [7] for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. e. Worship during crisis is the greatest expression of faith. Hebrews 11:36-39 (NIV) – [36] Some faced jeers and flogging, while still others were chained and put in prison. [37] They were stoned; they were sawed in two; they were put to death by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated—[38] the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and in caves and holes in the ground. [39] These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised. f. Worship isn’t about a PLACE of worship; it is all about an ATTITUDE of worship. John 4:21-24 (NIV) – [21] Jesus declared, “Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. [22] You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. [23] For a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. [24] God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.” g. God is not just seeking WORSHIP; He is seeking WORSHIPERS.

The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised.” [22] In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing. 1. Job grieves. a. Job tears his robe and shaves his head. b. This is the customary sign of intense mourning and grief for people of that day. Genesis 37:29, 34 (NIV) – [29] When Reuben returned to the cistern and saw that Joseph was not there, he tore his clothes… [34] Then Jacob tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and mourned for his son many days. Micah 1:16 (NIV) – [16] Shave your heads in mourning for the children in whom you delight; make yourselves as bald as the vulture, for they will go from you into exile. c. The process of grief is God’s gift of healing through tragedy. Ecclesiastes 7:3 (NIV) – [3] Sorrow is better than laughter, because a sad face is good for the heart. Ecclesiastes 7:3 (NLT) – [3] Sorrow is better than laughter, for sadness has a refining influence on us. Ecclesiastes 7:3 (MSG) – [3] Crying is better than laughing. It blotches the face, but it scours the heart. d. We grieve without losing hope. 1 Thessalonians 4:13 (NIV) – [13] Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. Lamentations 3:19-23 (NIV) – [19] I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall. [20] I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me. [21] Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: [22] Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. [23] They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. e. We are comforted to comfort others. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (NIV) – [3] Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, [4] who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. 2. Job worships. a. Job falls down and worships God. b. Worship (shachah) means to bow down, to prostrate oneself, to crouch, to fall down, to humbly beseech, to do reverence, to worship. One thing Laura hears quite often from parents after child loss is their discouragement of not hearing from God or feeling His presence in their place of deep darkness and grief. She also hears from those who have read her book When Tragedy Strikes who are frustrated because God doesn't speak to them the way […] The post 148: Why Can't I Hear from God? appeared first on GPS Hope.

Message Title: 2 Samuel 6:1-15 “When Tragedy Strikes” In this passage, it seems like everything is finally going right for both David and Israel. But in the midst of celebrating, a tragedy strikes. David finds himself questioning everything he knows about life with God. He goes through a time of being angry with God. He doesn't receive any real answer for the tragedy, but as life goes on he sees that God is still good and he chooses to continue walking with this God he cannot fully wrap his mind around.
