“If a person is entrusted to care for a building and decides to tear it down, there's a moral imperative to disclose whether there are people inside. There are 20.6 million people and 566,000 children living inside PEPFAR.” PEPFAR is the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. And as of March 25, 2025, its congressional reauthorization has expired. For more than two decades, its website states, “the U.S. government has invested over $110 billion in the global HIV/AIDS response, the largest commitment by any nation to address a single disease in history—saving 26 million lives, preventing millions of HIV infections, and accelerating progress toward controlling the global HIV/AIDS pandemic in more than 50 countries.” Now, some estimate that over 20 million people will lose access to antiretroviral drugs, which may result in up to 1,650,000 deaths over the coming year. In this episode, Mark Labberton speaks with Mindy Belz, an award-winning journalist and longtime war correspondent, to explore the urgent moral and humanitarian implications of PEPFAR's uncertain future. Drawing on Belz's deep reporting experience in conflict zones and her time covering global health efforts, their conversation traces the remarkable legacy of the U.S. government's investment in HIV/AIDS relief, the stakes of congressional inaction, and the broader questions this crisis raises about American moral leadership, Christian charity, and global responsibility. Together they discuss: Mindy Belz's background as a journalist and war correspondent The significance of PEPFAR in the global battle against HIV/AIDS The pivotal leadership role the U.S. government has played in supporting AIDS relief efforts for the past two decades The devastating impact that losing PEPFAR would have on human life around the world, particularly in Africa And, perspectives on charity, moral conscience, and faith in American Christianity Helpful Links mindybelz.com Mindy's Article about PEPFAR: “1,650,000: How killing a global program to fight HIV/AIDS kills”: “PEPFAR contracts ended under Trump mean 20 million people on treatment now face HIV disease again. Without more reinstatements that could lead to a death toll of 1.6 million in a year's time.” About PEPFAR, the “President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief”: Through PEPFAR, the U.S. government has invested over $110 billion in the global HIV/AIDS response, the largest commitment by any nation to address a single disease in history – saving 26 million lives, preventing millions of HIV infections, and accelerating progress toward controlling the global HIV/AIDS pandemic in more than 50 countries. For over two decades, she has covered wars and victims of conflict in Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, Sudan and the Balkans. She recounts some of her experiences in a 2016 award-winning book, They Say We Are Infidels. Her work appears in The Wall Street Journal, Plough Quarterly, and other publications. The New York Times calls her “one of the bravest and best foreign correspondents in the country.” Mindy currently is editor of the 2024 Christianity Today Globe project. Her news roundup, Globe Trot, is read by thousands each week and available on Substack. She speaks internationally and has taught journalism courses in Uganda, India, Hungary, and the United States. She is the former senior editor at World Magazine. A mother of four and grandmother of three, Mindy was married for 40 years to Nat Belz, who died in 2023. She lives in North Carolina. Show Notes Mindy Belz: A Journalist in the Trenches Mindy Belz and her career at World Magazine Mindy's coverage of the AIDS pandemic in East Africa and the war in Sudan The rise of Islamic extremism, Al-Quaeda, and crossing the Tigris into Iraq Her early experiences in journalism and what drew her to war reporting How she came to report from the Middle East and other conflict zones The challenges Mindy faced as a woman journalist “We've all experienced some of the conflict in the world. We've all experienced some terrorism and violence … this is a part of life in a broken and fallen world, and so learning from women, from men, from children incredible resilience in the face of terrible breakdowns is that I just consider a real privilege of my work.” Working with a Sudanese NGO—finding starving people, barely surviving “For Americans, we always get to walk away. I'm really aware in whatever hard situation I'm in, there's little voice at the back of my brain that's saying, ‘Don't forget you get to go home.'” What is PEPFAR? “ President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief,” developed by George W. Bush in 2003 Trendsetting program to battle HIV/AIDS Anti-viral drug program to prevent the spread (but not cure) the disease “We still don't have a real cure for HIV.” “You have 20 million people who are currently taking antiretroviral drugs that are funded under PEPFAR and most of those people just suddenly could not have access to their medicine and, and that means that we are watching even now the disease grow.” “The Trump administration has basically shuttered the program and they have done so without the oversight of Congress.” Nicholas Kristof's NYT March 15 article estimates that 1.6 million people could die over the next year. Link: “Musk Said No One Has Died Since Aid Was Cut. That Isn't True.” “The scale of the devastation is mind-bending.” What can we do? “Congress is not exercising its oversight responsibilities right now.” “If a person is entrusted to care for a building and decides to tear it down, there's a moral imperative to disclose whether there are people inside. There are 20.6 million people and 566,000 children living inside PEPFAR.” What is the role of our government? “I've also seen PEPFAR working and working incredibly. I routinely and in lifesaving ways.” Understanding moral conscience “We are needing to call our nation not to a Christian identity, which I think is the, the false attempt of Christian nationalism, but to a moral identity. That people of faith, little faith, no faith, other faiths, can enter into and share. And I think some element of that has been operational in the United States for a very long time. And now all of that is being dismantled and being labeled, as you say, by a really cheap word like charity, as though there's no wider frame than simply compassionate sentimentality, as opposed to something that's really taking the moral realities of the world and all of their urgency seriously. And not pretending that we need to be (as we've sometimes tried to be as a nation) the healer of the nations, but to say that we should actually be a force for taking these issues with great national seriousness, and not just repudiating it because it's not inside the boundaries of our own country.” “Use the influence and the economic force of the United States to fund local programs.” “ We have the resources to go and make a difference in this situation. And by doing that we set an example for others to do it.” “We  have adopted an attitude of scarcity.” The impact and efficacy of antiretroviral drugs to improve the lives of people with HIV/AIDS—”To suddenly cut them off is an act of cruelty.” “This is a system, not just medication.” “If we're suddenly saving $5 billion a year, what is that going to be used for?” ”If these things are all happening by executive decision, and Congress does not have a meaningful role, then essentially the people are cut out of the conversation.” “People who become sicker with HIV will become more likely to have tuberculosis, more likely to be suffering from other diseases than side effects of the virus itself.” Where Is God in All of This? “It's a dangerous world. Go anyway.” “We have to trust that the hand of God is there and that it will meet us in the midst of those hard situations.” Production Credits Conversing is produced and distributed in partnership with Comment Magazine and Fuller Seminary.

Her memoir, Gay with God, Reclaiming My Faith, Honoring My Story has just been released! Her podcast, GAY with GOD! can be found wherever you stream your podcasts. Midge specializes in helping her LGBTQIA+ community in their coming out and faith journeys. Her main focus is to stop gay suicides by educating people wounded by the church that they can be in relationship with the God of their understanding and that God does and has always loved us, just as we are created to be. To that end, Midge is very involved in her parish, The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. Midge and her wife, along with their fur babies, enjoy spending time at their mountain cabin, hiking, and being with their friends.  Today I focus on how my understanding of God has been skewed with a belief from childhood that led me to fear God. Do we need to fear God and is God angry and arbitrarily whacking us when we mess up? Today, I focus on comments and wisdom from the Bible Project Podcast regarding the Character of God and how we are active participants in our lives and our choices. In today's episode I focus on the events of Hurricane Helene and the question many of us ask during times of devastating trauma, "Where Is God?"  As a country is devastated and lives are lost and we  know it will take a hard time to recover, where is God?  How do we move forward and handle  our own trauma? There is a special section of this podcast dedicated to anyone who has or is feeling suicidal. Bravely asking about Employee Engement Survey results in an all-salary staff meeting.  2 Moving to Wichita (family followed) 1. Making some life choices to have a chance at things working out up to marry Ashley 3. Moved a lot in past 10 years: Shreveport to Wichita worked for a ministry 2. Quitting job and going full-time with Trussell media. 1. Marrying Hannah - quickly  3. Joining the Marine Corps - 2006  2. Marrying Audrie 1. Platoon leader as a young corporal tried to court martial, culpable inefficiency  3. A Good Word from Troy Album title → culpable inefficiency  “Do it so youdon't miss out." Calculated Esther: Background, Overview, and Application December 17, 2023   1. Who wrote Esther? We don't know. Some say Mordecai 2. Is the book of Esther true? Some say it is fiction. Why? It is written like a movie plot. Herodotus: Greek historian. “father of modern history” several corroborating events. 1.     Historian Herodotus describes Xerxes I as being susceptible to women and in the habit of making extravagant offers to them, just as he did to Esther ("up to half my kingdom"). Herodotus mentions that the Persian empire stretched from India to Ethiopia and also refers to the magnificent royal palace in Shushan (Susa), corroboration of what is stated in the Book of Esther. In addition Herodotus mentions an assembly of Persian nobles called by Xerxes to advise him on the proposed war against Greece. Although Herodotus does not give the location of this assembly, the date – "after Egypt was subdued" – corresponds to Xerxes' third year when Esther records an assembly of Persian nobility at a feast. (Histories VII.8)(Histories IX.108) Herodotus relates this occurred in the tenth month of his seventh year as king – the same time Ahasuerus was choosing beautiful women for his harem (Esther 2:16). 2. Annals from the reign of Xerxes 1 mention an otherwise unattested official by the name of “Marduka”, which some have proposed refers to Mordecai, as both are mentioned serving in the kings court.   3. What historical context does the book of Esther find itself? Jews in Babylon under Nebuchadnezzer. Ezra, Nehemiah, Zerubbabel. Some return, some stay. Some say the events of Esther falls between Ezra 6 and 7.   4. Where are we? Iran. Capital of Persian empire. (Babylon was in Iraq. Jews all over middle east. 5. Now it is time to explore the story of Esther. 1. Xerxes or Ahasuerus fueled from India to Egypt. Interestingly, we see that Mordecai tells Esther NOT to inform those around her of her people and heritage: Now when the virgins were gathered together the second time, Mordecai was sitting at the king's gate. Esther had not made known her kindred or her people, as Mordecai had commanded her, for Esther obeyed Mordecai just as when she was brought up by him. (Esther 2:19-20)   Now, the REASON for this matches what we read in Ezra, that there had been an accusation against the Jews that was written to the king at the beginning of the reign of Ahasuerus, who we call Artaxerxes: And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem. (Ezra 4:6) That's a funny little detail that only makes sense in the context of all that is going on.   12. WHERE IS GOD????? Esther's story is much like ours. We don't have angelic messengers. We don't hear God's audible voice. The “finger” of God is woven throughout the book of Esther. Events are divine only after we see the full picture and look back. Let this be an encouragement to you. 13. What happens after this? DEATH/MURDER How long did Esther live? An historical approach to the biblical account may, however, reveal an unexpected twist to the lives of the main characters. If we accept the scholarly consensus identifying Ahasuerus with Xerxes I, we know he came to the throne in 486 BCE and met an untimely and violent death in 465 BCE as a result of a court revolution. This was instigated by one of his own ministers, Artabanus, with a view to enabling Artaxerxes — Xerxes's son by his first marriage to Vashti — to succeed to the throne. The resulting war between Israel and Hamas has exposed rabid Jew hatred worldwide and especially in the U.S. and Britain, where thousands of college students publicly support the Palestinian terrorist group. Barack Obama's henchmen have directed Joe Biden to visit Israel tomorrow, but the weak fake president continues to disappoint those looking to the U.S. for leadership during this crisis. However, the left is still propping up Biden as the best candidate for the 2024 presidential election because his presence allows Obama to pull the strings behind the scenes. [45:50] Where Is God? Today on Bold Steps … Pastor Mark Jobe begins a new message about the timing of God. In life we all have “drama”. We have problems and pains that we wish would simply go away … and yet often times, our situation seems to remain the same. But we’re reminded in the Bible over and over that GOD’S timing in dealing with our problems is not OUR timing. We’re going to look at a powerful example of that found in John 11 and the story of Lazarus. We're asking the question, Where IS God in the middle of my drama?!Support the show: https://www.moodyradio.org/programs/bold-steps-with-dr-mark-jobe/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

(Questioning Faith)Embracing Divine Assurance: Why God Says You Should Not Be Troubled!Introduction:In a world filled with uncertainties and challenges, it is easy for us to be overwhelmed and troubled. However, many spiritual traditions, including Christianity, offer guidance and solace for those seeking comfort. The Bible, as a timeless source of wisdom, provides numerous verses that remind us why we should not be troubled. In this article, we will explore the reasons behind God's message of assurance and the biblical verses that reinforce this profound truth.God's Unchanging Nature:One of the fundamental reasons why God encourages us not to be troubled is rooted in His unchanging nature. In the book of Malachi, it is written: "For I am the Lord, I do not change" (Malachi 3:6). This verse assures us that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Amidst the turbulence of life, we can find solace in the unwavering nature of our Creator. God's constancy gives us confidence that He will remain with us, providing strength and guidance through every trial.Divine Providence:The Bible consistently emphasizes God's providence and care for His creation. In Matthew 6:26, Jesus reminds us, "Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?" This verse teaches us that if God takes care of the birds of the air, how much more will He provide for His beloved children? Recognizing God's loving provision can alleviate our anxieties, knowing that our needs are in the hands of a caring and attentive Father.Trusting in God's Plan:The Bible encourages us to trust in God's plan for our lives, even in times of uncertainty. In Jeremiah 29:11, God reassures His people, saying, "For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." This verse reminds us that God's plans are filled with hope and a purpose that extends far beyond our present circumstances. When we surrender to His divine will, we can find peace, knowing that God's plans for us are ultimately for our benefit. The Gift of Peace:God offers us the gift of peace, a peace that surpasses all understanding. In John 14:27, Jesus says, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." These powerful words of Jesus assure us that true peace is found in Him, transcending the troubles of the world. By placing our trust in God, we can experience an inner calmness, regardless of external circumstances.Eternal Perspective:Lastly, God calls us to maintain an eternal perspective. In 2 Corinthians 4:17, the apostle Paul writes, "For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all." This verse reminds us that our present troubles, no matter how distressing, are temporary in the grand scheme of eternity. Keeping our focus on the eternal rewards awaiting us can help us overcome anxiety and find strength in the face of adversity. Conclusion:God's message of not being troubled resonates throughout the Bible, assuring us of His unchanging nature, divine providence, and ultimate plans for our lives. By embracing these truths, we can find solace in the midst of life's uncertainties. Let us trust in God's unwavering love, embrace His peace, and maintain an eternal perspective. America's midterm elections were yesterday. It wasn't the huge win for Republicans that many were predicting, although many races are still undeclared. What did we learn about America? How does this fit with biblical prophecy and God's plan for the nation? China uses strict authoritarian measures against its people within its own borders. But a new report shows that it has established “overseas police stations” in 54 foreign nations, in which they are cracking down on dissent far outside Chinese territory. Europe is moving away from cash and toward a digital euro. The centralization of power over buying and selling and commerce points to an important biblical prophecy. And we conclude with some practical advice on a very important question: How can you know which church to attend? We study Jesus' teachings about carrying our cross and following him in order to be his disciple. What does it mean to take up my cross? We see that our beliefs need to be inline with Jesus and our will has to be aligned with his. We have to fully embrace the great commission and we must accept Jesus' mission as our own as we are called to follow him. What does a life of full surrender look like for you? Where are your beliefs and will in light of Jesus' teachings and desires? Are you following Jesus for comfort or for the cross?
