Did you know that women have a higher risk of dementia? Nearly twice as many women have Alzheimer's disease as men. Alzheimer's disease also worsens more quickly in women.  Also, did you know that heart disease can raise the risk of getting Alzheimer's disease? Other conditions that cause heart disease such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and deficient diet are all links to a higher risk of getting Alzheimer's disease. Whatever the gender or the cause, once dementia (Alzheimer's disease) happen, it forces families to change their lifestyles. Dementia is always a very stressful and worrying time. Today, we have with us someone who live this life, walk this path, learn from her experiences, and now she has made her life mission to help others with dementia families who are going through this journey, Vicki Tapia. When Vicki's parents were both diagnosed with dementia within a few months of each other, she became their caregiver. Out of that experience came her first book "Somebody Stole My Iron: A Family Memoir of Dementia." What began as a journal to help her cope with the many challenges her family face, morphed into a roadmap for others. Her work shares encouragement, insight, and lessons learned along the way. It is named one of the "Best Alzheimer's Books Of All Time" by Book Authority. Vicki's memoir brings hope to those whose lives had been intimately affected by dementia, letting them know that they are not alone. She's also a founder and a director of the non-profit AlzAuthors, an evergrowing global community of over 250 authors united to light the way for others with the vision to lift the silence and stigma surrounding Alzheimer's and other dementias through sharing of personal stories. Hey Everyone, Angela Bowen her, the host of She's A Small Wonder: A Small Wonder Podcast. Today, I covered S1E24: The Grandparents, which aired on May 17, 1986. In this episode Grandma and Grandpa Lawson learn about Vicki. Ted's father takes this news especially hard because he was fired from his job and replaced by a robot. This episode cleared up something for me that I thought in my original viewing of this episode back in 1990 when I was 8. When Vicki mentions Gonzo of course at the time I thought she mean't Gonzo from The Muppet Babies, when she actually meant Gonzo from the TV Show Trapper John M.D. It's so weird, I went a good chunk of my life thinking she was referring to Gonzo from the Muppets because at the time that's the only Gonzo I knew, only to be corrected 30 years later. See, I learn so much from rewatching these 80's sitcoms I grew up on. Ted's father actually tells Harriet he wished that she was his granddaughter because she's real. Oh sir, if you only knew and much a pain in the a$$ Harriet and her family are. I'm looking forward so much to the adventures of Vicki and the Lawsons's coming in 2021 when I start Season 2. Now starting in January instead of one episode a month I will be covering two episodes in one podcast episode a month. That's double the Vicki. I figured this way I wouldn't be spending two years covering one Season. Here are the two episodes coming in January: Small Wonder S2E1: Chewed Out, which aired on September 13, 1986. In this episode Jamie and Reggie, learns a sobering lesson by, smoking cigarettes and chewing tobacco to elevate their freshman status in junior high. I remember this episode from back in the 90's when I watched it in a rerun but it will be interesting to see if I view it differently now that I'm older, being a kid at the time this felt like one of those serious episodes because it dealt with kids and cigarettes. and S2E2: Money, Money, Money which aired on September 20, 1986. In this episode Jamie tries to buy the love of a pretty classmate. This damn bitch Jessica is back, WTF Jamie! Didn't you learn your lesson from last Season? We'll see what happens! See you all in 2021!

Have you ever felt that you don’t belong where you are because you aren’t qualified enough? Have you ever felt like there aren’t opportunities for you because there aren’t enough jobs? These feelings are normal and we call them Imposter Syndrome and Scarcity Mindset.   I’m excited to share this discussion and Q+A with my good friend, Dr. Vicki Johnson. In this episode of GradSchooled, we discuss how to confidently pursue the professional opportunities you desire. You will gain insights on breaking the barriers of Imposter Syndrome when applying to and excelling within competitive fellowships and jobs.    Dr. Vicki Johnson is Founder and CEO of ProFellow, the world's leading online resource for information on professional and academic fellowships. She is also the creator of Fully Funded, an online course and mentorship program that teaches the strategies to achieve full funding for graduate school and professional development. Vicki is an award-winning social entrepreneur, top PhD scholar and four-time fellowship recipient.    Show Notes: [1:40] - Vicki introduces herself as the founder of ProFellow.com and the creator of the Fully Funded course and mentorship program for graduate school and fellowship applicants. [3:00] - These mindsets can either be a positive fuel and a negative fuel, but are most often referred to in the negative light. [3:40] - A layman's definition of Imposter Syndrome is the feeling that you do not belong and feeling like you are a fraud. [4:27] - This is a lack of acknowledgement, ownership, and internalization of your true achievements and skills. [5:09] - Fatimah says that people feel the effects of Imposter Syndrome at different points in their lives and gives examples of when they could pop up. [6:17] - High achievers tend to feel Imposter Syndrome. Fatimah says this is because most high achievers are perfectionists and compare themselves to others. This causes people to feel like they aren’t qualified when in reality, they are very qualified. [7:32] - Fatimah gives an example scenario of how we do ourselves an injustice when we compare our path with someone else’s path. [8:47] - People see the result of your hard work and don’t always see the steps it took to reach that result. [9:29] - Vicki didn’t experience Imposter Syndrome when applying for fellowships because she felt like she didn’t have anything to lose. However, she did feel it when setting up her organization. [10:31] - When Vicki stopped caring about what other people’s expectations were and started focusing on what she loved to do, she began to feel more at ease as she built her business. [10:56] - Entrepreneurship is so broad and when we settle into our own experience, we can focus on moving forward. [11:43] - Fatimah works with highly educated people who are looking at a career pivot. These people experience Imposter Syndrome when they realize they have to network with new people in a new space. [12:46] - You don’t have to explain yourself or justify yourself if you know that your idea is powerful to you. You can bring something to the table if you know your why. [14:31] - A broad definition of Scarcity Mindset is feeling like there is not enough of something to do what you want to do. Fatimah gives examples on how this could present itself. [16:21] - These competitive application processes for fellowships and jobs are an opportunity in and of themselves. Even if you don’t get the position, you are meeting new people and getting your name out there. [17:38] - You have to be willing to see the abundance. Most opportunities that are out there are not created by others. They are actually things that you create. [18:51] - Fatimah uses an example from her own experiences to demonstrate how opportunities may be dormant. She took the time to step back and wound up following her network and finding a hidden opportunity. [20:27] - Knowing what you desire and what you are working towards and having that clarity for yourself instead of the track will help you in your search for the right opportunities for yourself. [22:37] - The Genius Retreat is an opportunity for high achievers to reflect on this year and look forward and plan for 2021. [25:02] - Vicki discusses how and why she took the opportunity of getting her Ph.D. Academia was never on her radar. [26:58] - People who are finishing their degrees may feel the Scarcity Mindset as a response to the job market. [28:34] - Many times, graduates with a Ph.D. lead a very narrow and specific search for a job, but when you dig deep into your core skills and the core values of what you really want out of your career, you will find different opportunities that are a better fit for your path. [30:03] - You need to constantly look for the abundance of what is available to you throughout the process. You need to also think about how much abundance you can bring to the field as well. [30:50] - Fatimah and Vicki discuss the phrase “fake it till you make it.” [32:03] - Look back at your resume. Your resume will remind you of who you are. [33:05] - One of the features of the Professional Pathways Planner is the Career Success Pledge. What this does is creates your affirmations at the time when you have the least drive to do that yourself. [34:55] - We need a clear vision on where we want to go. [35:48] - How do you want to use your time and energy? What do you want next for yourself? Ask yourself these questions instead of “What is possible for me?” [37:01] - It is important to explore different types of work because you may be surprised by what opportunities will present themselves. [38:31] - When we listen too much to what society says, we lose out on a lot of creativity. [40:22] - Things were uncertain before COVID. Fatimah says to not let the Imposter Syndrome and Scarcity Mindset hold you back. [41:27] - Moments of uncertainty are ripe for innovation and creativity. [42:56] - Don’t try to force yourself into opportunity and change your approach.   Hang out with Dr. Fatimah Williams Instagram | Facebook | LinkedIn Beyond the Tenure Track   Resources: Free Planning Tool Kit Professional Pathways Planner Register for The Genius Retreat ProFellow Fully Funded Course by Dr. Vicki Johnson   Looking to make a career pivot?  Learn more about Options for Success and sign up for the waitlist. In episode forty two of the Glow Journal podcast, host Gemma Watts sits down with the co-founder of The Jojoba Company, Vicki Engsall. As I record this, in 2020, just about everyone I know has an understanding of what jojoba is or, at the very least, has at least heard of it- but this wasn’t always the case. I sincerely believe that so much of what we know about jojoba is thanks to Vicki. Despite a long standing interest in the skin, Vicki Engsall grew up wanting to be a teacher- and so she became one. It wasn’t until she was trying to fall pregnant that business ownership looked to be a possibility. Little did Vicki realise, however, that the seeds that grew to become The Jojoba Company had been, quite literally, planted many years prior. I’ll leave the storytelling up to Vicki, but the events that lead to Vicki leaving her teaching role and launching her skincare company are perhaps the best example of serendipity that has ever been told on this podcast. When Vicki co-founded The Jojoba Company with her father in 2008, very little was known about jojoba. Today, thanks largely to Vicki’s background in education, jojoba is one of the most in demand ingredients in the world. Of course, this interview was recorded remotely, and I think now is particularly good time to be spotlighting local businesses like The Jojoba Company. In this conversation, Vicki and I discuss what she has dubbed the “oil revolution,” what an “ingredients claim” is and why they can be so dangerous, and how to bring the skin’s lipid profile back to how it was at the age of 22. This episode is great if you have, had or plan on having kids! My guest Vicki Hoefle is a beast; she’s easy going yet clear about both the general philosophy for how to be successful as a parent while giving specific advice for how to handle a number of challenging circumstances. I loved this conversation for a number of reasons but a couple things stood out: Of course, her wisdom is relevant for parents — or those who engage with children but also for engaging anyone else. When Vicki talked about kids’ (human’s) natural compulsion toward independence, freedom … autonomy and their desire to be “left” to do their thing and even show you that they can be independent and do good things — which every great parent wants. I hope you enjoy Uncompromised Vicki Hoefle!
