All Home Care Matters and our host, Lance A. Slatton were honored to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of AlzAuthors with the founding members and more.   About Marianne Sciucco:   Marianne Sciucco is a founder of AlzAuthors and the author of Blue Hydrangeas, an Alzheimer's love story. She's also co-producer and host of their podcast Untangling Alzheimer's and Dementia.   About Deb Bunt:   Deb took early retirement from her role in the youth offending service in London and moved to Suffolk seven years ago. As well as acquiring four grandchildren since she's been in Suffolk, she has also built an enduring friendship with Peter. This friendship Peter has given Deb a new lens through which to view her life.   Peter has enabled Deb to fulfil one of her life's ambitions – to be a published writer – and she now spends her time with Peter raising awareness of the condition or cycling insane distances around the county. Without question, Peter has enriched Deb's life.   About Tanya Ward Goodman:   Tanya Ward Goodman is the author of the award winning memoir, “Leaving Tinkertown.” Her essays and articles about travel, art, and the challenges and rewards of caregiving have appeared in numerous publications including The Washington Post, Orange County Register, Luxe, Premium Magazine, Atlas Obscura, and Variable West.   About Vicki Tapia:   Trained as an educator, Vicki Tapia has a proclivity for caring, spending over 30 years working as a Lactation Consultant teaching mothers and babies the art of breastfeeding.   When both her parents were diagnosed with dementia (Alzheimer's and Parkinson's-related) within a few months of each other, she took on the role of caregiver. As a coping mechanism, Vicki kept a journal detailing the many challenges her family faced along the way. Over time, her diary became a roadmap of sorts, morphing into the award-winning memoir Somebody Stole My Iron: A Family Memoir of Dementia.   About Dorothy Horne: Dorothy Horne is an author, speaker, and a former award-winning blogger for the Longview News-Journal. She was honored to be named a “Star Over Longview” in 2016. Dorothy is a member of AlzAuthors, “a global community of authors writing about Alzheimer's and dementia from personal experience to light the way for others." She has served on the board of the East Texas Alzheimer's Alliance and facilitated several Alzheimer's support groups. Dorothy is a retired first grade teacher. One of her greatest delights is being "Dot-Dot" to her four grandsons. She lives in East Texas and enjoys photography and traveling.   About Susan Landeis:   Susan is a member of the AlzAuthors management team and Board of Directors. She became a featured author on the AlzAuthors website in 2020, and team member later the same year. Her roles include Graphic Designer, Curator of Custom Caregiver Collections, and LinkedIn Manager.    Susan is the author of her memoir, In Search of Rainbows: A daughter's story of loss, hope, and redemption and she also penned Optimal Caregiving: A guide for managing senior health and well-being.   About Jean Lee:   Jean Lee wrote lesson plans for 22 years as an elementary school teacher. She had no aspirations to write a book, however when both parents were diagnosed on the same day with Alzheimer's, her journey as their caregiver poured out on paper through Alzheimer's Daughter. After the sadness of her parents decline, life brought her comfort and healing through the formation of AlzAuthors.com, cofounded with Marianne Sciucco and Vicki Tapia. What started as a one-month collaboration has now taken on a thriving life of its own for a decade.   About Carol Bradley Bursack:   Carol Bradley Bursack was a caregiver for an older neighbor and seven aging family members, all of whom are represented by first-person vignettes in Minding Our Elders: Caregivers Share Their Personal Stories. However, Carol wanted to do more than tell her own stories. She wanted to give other caregivers a chance to do the same.   About Christy Byrne Yates:   Christy is an expert in navigating the challenges and opportunities in life including living in the “Sandwich Generation” — that time period of raising children while also caring for an aging loved one. Her book, “Building a Legacy of Love: Thriving in the Sandwich Generation” recounts her journey and learning as a working mother of two who also managed the care of her parents, both of whom had some form of dementia. She incorporates meditation, mindfulness and other evidence based mind/body practices into her work to support growth, resilience, and a pathway to living life fully.

Vicki Tapia is a founder of AlzAuthors and the author of Somebody Stole My Iron: A Family Memoir of Dementia. In this replay of a recent Aging and Amazing book club discussion, Vicki shares profound insights from her personal experiences. She discusses how caring for two parents with dementia placed a considerable strain on her personal support system. A long-distance caregiver, she found the challenges of managing her parent's concerning behaviors and medical needs from 200 miles away daunting. Their rural community and limited medical resources confounded the situation as well. Her only sibling's chosen absence from the situation was another stressor. Newly married, she was reticent to lean on her supportive physician husband too hard. Her adult children were also supportive but lived far away, making it difficult to ask them for help. A lifelong journaler, she resolved her feelings and worries by putting pen to paper, eventually coming to the realization that she had written a book. Initially, she hesitated to publish her book due to privacy concerns but was encouraged to do so by positive feedback. Her decision to publish was also influenced by her desire to help others navigate similar experiences. Somebody Stole My Iron was published in 2014 and was a finalist for the High Plains Book Awards in 2015. Each chapter ends with "Lesson Learned," imparting valuable insight and inspiration to caregivers. Three Key Takeaways 1. Finding Humor in Hardships: Vicki emphasizes the importance of finding humor in difficult situations, which can provide emotional relief and resilience. 2. The Necessity of Self-Care: Vicki's guilt over taking a trip is a common sentiment among caregivers. Her mother's philosophy, "life is for the living," underscores the need for self-care and balance, reminding caregivers to also focus on their own well-being. 3. Patience and Kindness: Through her experience, Vicki learned the crucial caregiving virtues of patience, respect, and kindness. She advises new caregivers to meet their loved ones where they are and to let go of guilt and expectations. Learn more about Vicki at AlzAuthors.com. All Home Care Matters is honored to welcome Author and Co-Founder of AlzAuthors, Vicki Tapia.   Trained as an educator, Vicki Tapia has a proclivity for caring, spending over 30 years working as a Lactation Consultant teaching mothers and babies the art of breastfeeding. Whether fretting over her mother's false accusations that she was stealing their money to travel or coping with her father's missing eyebrows, Vicki writes with honesty and humor, offering both encouragement and insight. She shares the many lessons learned on the journey, bringing hope to those whose lives have been intimately affected by dementia, letting them know that they are not alone.   She is also the author of two other award-winning works, both historical fiction: Maggie: A Journey of Love, Loss and Survival based on the life of her intrepid great-grandmother, and her latest release, Harry and Grace: A Dakota Love Story written about her grandparents, who lived on the North Dakota prairie in the early 1900's.   Vicki is a founder and a director of the all-volunteer nonprofit, AlzAuthors.com. An ever-growing global community of over 350 authors, they share their personal stories, united in an effort to reduce the stigma and silence surrounding dementia.   AlzAuthors also produces an award-winning podcast Untangling Alzheimer's and Dementia: An AlzAuthors Podcast and most recently unveiled its newest initiative, the Custom Caregiver Collection. This collection brings table-top lending libraries, custom-filled with quality books, to places where people impacted by dementia gather.

When both of her parents were diagnosed with dementia, Vicki Tapia, a lactation consultant who had coached around 10,000 mother-baby pairs, found her energies redirected to the other end of life. A lifelong writer, she soon began journaling as an outlet for the stress and strain she encountered as their long-distance caregiver. Over time, this journal became a book-length work, a memoir detailing her family's rocky road through this devastating disease. She was inspired to seek publication after many friends told her that reading her words helped them on their own dementia journeys. Her story was then published by Praeclarus Press as Somebody Stole My Iron: A Family Memoir of Dementia. It became a finalist in the 2015 High Plains Book Awards and was named "One of the best Alzheimer's books of all time" by Book Authority. Vicki is a co-founder and manager of AlzAuthors, happily serving as treasurer, acquisitions editor, and whatever else is needed. She's a lifelong traveler and has been all over the globe and the United States. When she's not busy writing, you're apt to find her out walking her dog or off on an adventure with her husband on their tandem bicycle. In this episode, we discuss the dilemma of being a long-distance caregiver to two parents with dementia at the same time, the trauma of moving her parents not once but twice, and how journaling helped her keep her sanity. Fading Memories: Alzheimer's Caregiver Support

Remember & Memory Issues led to Vicki writing a book. We've all had the experience of not remembering. As we age some of us dismiss this as part of aging and some of us fear it's the first sign of Alzheimer's. How do we know who is right? Experts say that mild memory loss is normal as we age. Occasional forgetfulness does not mean you're developing Alzheimer's. If we're concerned about developing the disease, have normal memory lapses we easily focus on what we're forgetting.  Knowing the difference between normal memory issues and memory loss we should worry about is tricky. Our brains are capable of creating new brain cells at any age so significant memory loss is not normal. Brains are like muscles and need to be kept strong just like the rest of our bodies.  Lifestyle can have a huge impact on the health of our brains. What we eat, and drink, how much exercise we get, how well we sleep are all important factors into brain health. The other is to regularly challenge our brains by learning something new. Anything that forces you to "think hard" or forces you to really concentrate are good for your brain. Normal Forgetfulness VS Dementia Occasional lapses in memory are normal, not a warning sign of Alzheimer's or dementia. If you find yourself with some of the following memory issues you'll want to get checked out immediately. Forgetting names of people you just met or calling one person by another name? Do you occasionally forget where you left things like glasses or car keys? Occasionally forgetting an appointment or walking into a room and not remembering why? Are you easily distracted or have trouble remembering what you just read or the details of a conversation? More frequently being unable to retrieve information that's on "the tip of your tongue" It's time to consult a doctor when memory lapses become frequent enough or sufficiently noticeable to concern you or a family member. This is not the time to pretend all is well.  Early intervention may allow you to have more good years than not so call the doctor and have a FULL workup scheduled. The traditional pen and pencil memory test which usually takes less than 10 minutes may not be sufficient to detect a problem. Reversible Causes of Memory Loss Memory problems don't automatically mean you have dementia. There are many reasons why you may be having cognitive problems. Some reversible causes include stress, depression, poor sleep or even vitamin deficiencies.  Some prescription medications may also have side effects that cause memory issues. This is why seeing your doctor is so important. The 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer's On this episode of the podcast I talk to Vicki Tapia about acknowledging when our parents need help  Her experiences as a caregiver to her parents and how she coped led her to writing a book. "Someone Stole My Iron" offers useful information from experts in the field of Alzheimer’s research, personal lessons learned along the way, and ideas/tips for managing the day-to-day ups and downs of dementia. It is a story of holding on and ultimately learning to let go, transcending the pain and turmoil to discover love and compassion.  "Someone Stole my Iron" chronicles her Mothers determination to navigate the confusing and terrifying world of memory loss. You'll find our conversation full of personal struggles that are universal and our approach to them educational.  Together we cover a lot of ground on caregiving challenge. My Favorite Things Page
