If you listen to the podcast, you know a thing or two about crime. You may like the following questions: Why did they do it? How did they do it? Why this victim and not someone else? No matter why you listen, I bet you can remember a case from childhood that left a mark, changed how you looked at humanity, or made you lose your innocence. For me, this is that story. I had just turned 11 years old and I still remember the look of shock on my mother's face when she was talking about this. The call came through just before dawn on Thursday, October 23, 1980. A dispatcher's voice crackled over the radio, summoning officers and an ambulance to Pope's Cafeteria at 12450 Manchester Road, inside West County Center in Des Peres, Missouri. If you are local, you may call it the White Dove, at least we did growing up. When officers arrived, they were met with a small crowd of employees, still in their uniforms, visibly shaken. Some clung to each other for support, their faces pale with shock as they pointed officers toward the inside of the restaurant. Whatever had happened, it was bad.Join Jen and Cam of Our True Crime Podcast on this episode, “Pope's Cafeteria Massacre.”Listener discretion by @octoberpodVHSMusic by @theinkypawprintSources:Murder At Pope's Cafeteria by Ronald Martin. https://www.newspapers.com/article/st-louis-post-dispatch-thomas-selvey-an/21186652/https://www.newspapers.com/article/st-louis-post-dispatch-byrd-guilty-of-f/16608221/https://www.newspapers.com/article/springfield-leader-and-press-byrd/80560580/https://www.newspapers.com/article/st-louis-post-dispatch-byrd-1/80560921/https://www.newspapers.com/article/st-louis-post-dispatch-dairy-queen-murd/17396419/https://www.newspapers.com/article/st-louis-post-dispatch/48854693/https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-springfield-news-leader-maurice-osca/16349748/https://www.newspapers.com/article/st-louis-post-dispatch-oscelious-green/20674092/"Byrd". Lawrencia Bembenek's beauty was both a blessing and a curse. To some, it was a key that unlocked doors. But to others, it was the perfect tool for shaping a narrative—a narrative that framed her as a modern-day femme fatale. The press depicted her as “a former Playboy bunny,” yet Laurie had worked only three weeks as a waitress at the Lake Geneva Playboy Club and never posed for the magazine in her birthday suit. The closest she came to being a centerfold was fully clothed in a Schlitz beer calendar. This story was eaten up by the public and often distorted by the media. There were public rallies cheering her on with cries of “Run, Bambi, Run,” the name the press gave her and the name she hated. People could not get enough of this case, which brings me to the whole reason I decided to cover it today, as it may sound a bit familiar to another case in the headlines today. Take a listen and see what you think. Was Laurie set up? For years, Robert Brashers had managed to evade justice, slipping through the cracks repeatedly. But on January 13, 1999, his luck finally ran out in a modest motel room in Kennett, Missouri. What began as a routine police search quickly escalated into a tense, life-or-death standoff that would forever change the lives of those involved. Who was Robert Brashers? A man who his wife and children loved. What could have driven him to such a tragic end? The entire truth would remain hidden for years, with whispers suggesting that there were more victims out there. In the early hours of July 17, 1997, Denise Wolff, 39, had just finished her overnight shift as a card dealer at the President Casino on the Admiral. It had been a good night, and Denise, feeling optimistic, climbed into her brand-new Chrysler Cirrus LX. She had a new job, a new car, and even a new man in her life. Things were finally looking up for her. On her way home, Denise stopped at a drive-thru on Hampton Avenue to grab a bite before returning to her house on Bancroft Avenue. The streets were quiet at this time which was good since South St. Louis had a predator, known as the South Side Rapist, who had been lurking in the area. Ever cautious, Denise had installed a motion-activated floodlight near her driveway, ensuring she would be seen if anyone approached. But tonight, something felt different. Denise usually pulled straight into her garage, never exposing herself to the darkened street. But tonight, she parked her car on the street. She stepped out and walked toward her front door, but never made it.Join Cam and Jen on this Our True Crime Podcast episode entitled ‘Shots in the Dark: The Murder of Denise Wolff.'Listener discretion by @octoberpodVHSAll music by our E.P. @theinkypawprintSources:https://www.firstalert4.com/2022/02/16/this-was-weirdest-case-absolutely-crazy-puzzling-south-city-murder-remains-unsolved-decades-later/https://www.firstalert4.com/news/st-louis-unsolved/https://www.riverfronttimes.com/news/see-no-evil-2472783https://www.riverfronttimes.com/news/now-you-see-it-now-you-dont-2472870https://www.firstalert4.com/2022/02/16/this-was-weirdest-case-absolutely-crazy-puzzling-south-city-murder-remains-unsolved-decades-later/https://www.safehorizon.org/get-informed/domestic-violence-statistics-facts/https://slmpd.org/homicide/unsolvedhomicides/https://uncovered.com/states/missouri-cold-cases/st-louis-mohttps://www.bonterratech.com/blog/domestic-violence-statistics
Today, we are going back in time; let's rewind the clock to 1969, the year the world got slightly brighter—because Jen and I came into being. But hold on tight because we're about to dive into the scene's heart. A place where the music's alive, the air's thick with good vibes, and the soul just flows. We're talking about The Scene, man. Now we meet Steve Paul, the cool cat that operates The Scene, and let me tell ya, this joint on West 46th Street in the Big Apple is where at. Every night, you'll find the grooviest cats in town—hippies, musicians, artists, and just free spirits all jammin' out together, sharing a little bit of magic, and yeah, passing around that sweet, sweet devil's lettuce.By February 2003, the glory days of the once vibrant nightlife hub and gritty hustle had long since faded into the past. The building's remaining tenants—sex workers, drug users, and the forgotten souls of the neighborhood kept a few apartments in the building. The storefronts, once home to The Scene, had cycled through several different faces since its closure: a pornographic video shop, a seedy dive bar, and now, a restaurant eager to convert the basement into a walk-in freezer. Demolition made way for a shiny new Riu Hotel, which was not completed until 2016. On February 10th, construction workers stumbled upon something strange while tearing down what was left. Behind an aging coal furnace in the basement, they noticed a raised concrete slab six feet wide, five feet long, and about a foot high. One worker took a sledgehammer and struck the slab. Once he was inside, a human skull rolled out of its resting place.Join Jen and Cam of Our True Crime Podcast on this episode entitled ‘Buried for Decades: Discovery of Midtown Jane Doe.'Listener Discretion is by @octoberpodVHSAll music is by our editor @theinkypawprintSources:https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/true-crime-mystery-murder-the-scene-new-york-1235156741/https://people.com/midtown-jane-doe-new-york-woman-identified-patricia-kathleen-mcglone-8641422https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=434347589384178&id=100064771266307https://nypost.com/2024/04/28/us-news/midtown-jane-doe-finally-idd-20-years-after-remains-found-cemented-in-former-nyc-hot-spot/https://vocal.media/criminal/midtown-jane-doe-identified-after-50-years-using-dnahttps://www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/1cfjvaq/midtown_jane_doe_2003_identified_as_16yearold/https://www.facebook.com/FOX5NY/videos/who-was-midtown-jane-doe/3012225785594168/https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2024/04/30/patricia-kathleen-mcglone-midtown-jane-doe-cold-case/73515200007/https://www.cbsnews.com/news/patricia-mcglone-midtown-jane-doe-murder-victim-identified-cold-case-dna-911-victim-nypd/https://r.search.yahoo.com/_ylt=AwrFY0w.4Npn3Gwj.gYPxQt.;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny/RV=2/RE=1742426302/RO=10/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.cnn.com%2f2024%2f05%2f01%2fus%2fmidtown-jane-doe-death-ring-cec%2findex.html/RK=2/RS=EJ_.ELaYzd69r4SyrsnD98NHxmk-https://www.doenetwork.org/closed/articles/337UFNY_article.pdf
It is November 6th, 1990. The air was crisp, the Belt Parkway humming with the usual New York traffic. Among the cars was Eddie Lino—an old-school Gambino enforcer, a man whose name carried weight in the city's underworld. He'd spent years dodging the law. But this time, the flashing red and blue lights in his rearview weren't just another routine hassle. As the unmarked car closed in, Lino must've felt it—something was off. Before he could react, gunfire rang out. The ambush was clean and professional in a city where power shifts with a trigger pull; Eddie Lino's time was up. For a man who had made a living by the gun, there were only two ways out: a prison cell or a body bag. Lino avoided the first. And he paid his dues in full on that Brooklyn highway in 1992. Dirty cops and the mob—nothing new in New York. But this case? This was different. Two high-ranking NYPD detectives weren't just looking the other way; they worked for the Lucchese crime family, pulling jobs and covering tracks for over a decade. They didn't just take bribes—they were on the payroll.Join Cam and Jen on this episode of Our True Crime Podcast entitled ‘Mafia's Finest: Stephen Caracappa and Louis Eppolito.'Listener discretion by @octoberpodVHSMusic is by our editor @theinkypawprintSources:Mafia Cops Interview - Louis Eppolito on the Sally Jesse Raphael showhttps://www.amazon.com/Mafia-Cop-Lou-Eppolito/dp/1416517014http://www.nydailynews.com/news/crime/mafia-cops-louis-eppolito-stephen-caracappa-sentenced-life-prison-article-1.366777https://www.justice.gov/archive/usao/nye/pr/2009/2009mar06b.htmlhttps://www.reddit.com/r/OldSchoolCool/comments/15ygama/louis_eppolito_on_sally_jesse_raphael_1992/https://nypost.com/2005/07/07/victims-mom-fingered-mafia-cop-from-tv-talk-show/https://www.justice.gov/archive/usao/nye/pr/2005/2005mar10.htmlhttps://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/07/nyregion/louis-eppolito-dead.htmlhttps://www.silive.com/news/2017/04/report_mob_cop_with_staten_isl.htmlhttps://web.archive.org/web/20170412190201/http://gothamist.com/2017/04/12/nypd_cop_turned_mafia_hitman_dies_i.phphttps://caselaw.findlaw.com/us-2nd-circuit/1532561.htmlhttps://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/nyc-crime/ny-mafia-cop-louis-eppolito-dead-20191105-55tnkoq4f5amvm5555qcp3fb34-story.htmlhttps://www.justice.gov/archive/usao/nye/pr/2009/2009mar06b.htmlhttp://www.ipsn.org/indictments/caracappa_indictment/caracappa_indictment_newest.htmhttps://web.archive.org/web/20060111191537/https://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/01/05/60minutes/main1180833.shtmlhttp://www.ipsn.org/indictments/caracappa_indictment/caracappa_indictment_newest.htm
The night of April 19, 1997, was like any other Saturday at Tony's Pizza in Hardyston, New Jersey. The dinner rush had come and gone, and as the clock neared 10:45 p.m., Jeremy Giordano, 22, and Giorgio Gallara, 25, prepared to call it a night. But first, there was one last order to deliver—two pizzas bound for 196 Scott Road. A routine run. A simple transaction. They had no idea they were driving straight into an ambush. As Giordano pulled up to the curb, a car sat waiting in the darkness. Gallara, the restaurant's owner, rolled down the passenger-side window and called out, “Sixteen-fifty,” expecting a quick cash exchange. But instead of a wallet, one of the waiting men reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol. The first shot shattered the quiet night. Then another. And another. The gunman emptied the chamber. His accomplice, unwilling to be a spectator, drew his weapon and joined in. Shots ripped through metal and glass, through the inside of the vehicle. The car lurched forward, rolling off the road before finally coming to a stop, its frame riddled with bullet holes. But the horror wasn't over.Join Jen and Cam on this episode of Our True Crime Podcast entitled “Thrill Killers: The Murders of Jeremy Giordano and Giorgio Gallara.”Listener discretion by @octoberpodVHSMusic and EP by @theinkypawprintSources:https://www.njherald.com/story/news/crime/2017/04/19/1997-thrill-killings-2-pizza/4127116007/https://r.search.yahoo.com/_ylt=AwrNP7BkJLZnNZ0g9w0PxQt.;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny/RV=2/RE=1740018917/RO=10/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.njherald.com%2fstory%2fnews%2f2015%2f04%2f19%2fslain-son-s-memory-still%2f4043273007%2f/RK=2/RS=z03AcPdo0uYot7mkSYhG4z7H0eM-https://www.nytimes.com/1997/04/22/nyregion/2-held-in-thrill-killings-of-pizza-men.htmlhttps://www.njherald.com/story/news/crime/2019/08/09/convicted-killer-pizza-deliverymen-can/4321608007/https://law.justia.com/cases/new-jersey/supreme-court/2001/a-22-99-opn.htmlhttps://www.nytimes.com/1999/12/25/nyregion/mother-apologizes-to-families-of-deliverymen-slain-by-her-son.htmlhttps://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2000-feb-26-mn-2826-story.htmlhttps://www.nj.com/news/2010/07/former_sussex_county_man_convi_1.htmlhttps://law.justia.com/cases/new-jersey/appellate-division-unpublished/2010/a1697-07-opn.htmlhttps://horrorobsessive.com/2022/05/13/the-pizza-murders-the-story-of-a-random-double-murder-that-shocked-a-small-town/https://www.alamy.com/file-jason-vreeland-17-from-vernon-township-nj-is-seen-in-this-high-school-yearbook-photograph-vreeland-and-thomas-j-koskovich-18-from-franklin-were-charged-with-the-murders-of-two-pizza-delivery-men-saturday-night-in-franklin-ap-photodaniel-hulshizer-image543056317.htmlhttps://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/world-news/chilling-case-baby-faced-pizza-31912103

Nestled in the small, unassuming town of Stella, Missouri, in the heart of the Ozarks, nine-year-old Rowan Ford lived a life like any kid would. She shared a modest home in Newton County with her mother, Colleen Munson, and her stepfather, David Spears. 25-year-old David Spears had a long-standing friendship with 32-year-old Christopher Collings, a man who wasn't family by blood but had become close to the family over the years. Collings moved into the Spears household during the summer of 2007, living in the basement and being looked up to by the young Rowan, who fondly called him “Uncle Chris.” But by late October, Collings left the Spears home and relocated to a farm in Wheaton, Missouri, where he had a trailer parked on the property. On the chilly evening of November 2, 2007, Nathan Mahurin, another friend of both Spears and Collings, joined the two men at the Wheaton farm. The trio stopped at a local liquor store to stock up on malt liquor before returning to Spear's home to drink and play pool. Michelle was a mother to five children: 17-year-old Kyle, 15-year-old Demi,8-year-old Brandon, 7-year-old Lacie, and the youngest, 3-year-old Lia. Michelle was their protector and rock. But on this fateful morning, she was about to find herself in a battle for their lives, a battle she would lose.Join Jen and Cam of Our True Crime Podcast on this episode entitled ‘Revenge and Ruin: The Pearson Family Arson.'Listener discretion by @octoberpodVHSMusic and Editing courtesy of @theinkypawprintPromo by our own @rett1214 and her new podcast Mystery, History and Crime. It was a cold November evening on the 26th, 2004, in Van Buren, Missouri, when the events that would soon unravel in the small, unsuspecting town began to take shape. Two men, Lance Shockley and his sister-in-law's fiancé, Jeffrey Bayless, embarked on an innocent enough drive in Bayless' truck. But as they made their way, something went wrong. Under Shockley's control, the vehicle careened off the road, plunging into a ditch. But it wasn't the crash that would raise the most questions—it was what happened afterward that would haunt everyone involved. As the investigation unfolded under Highway Patrol Sergeant Carl DeWayne Graham, Jr., the small town would see another person lose their life. Listener warning: this case is extremely disturbing. It is our final day of the 12 Nightmares Before Christmas. In May 1981, on the outskirts of Chicago, a hotel maid went to work like she did every day. For the most part, the day was uneventful, except when she noticed a horrible smell. The Moonlit Hotel wasn't exactly a five-star place to stay. It was known as a place for drug deals and quick sex. Even so, the maid had never noticed a smell like this before. This was something new. And all day long, she tried to find the source of the stench but never found it. She returned to work the next day, and the smell was even worse. It is a medical fact that women have a better sense of smell than men. They are also better at identifying a specific odor. And what the maid smelled that day was death. Her gut told her that something was dead on the hotel premises, but no matter how much she looked for the source, she couldn't find it. The stench was making it almost impossible to work. Finally, she went to the hotel manager, who said that, yeah, now that she mentioned it, he smelled something, too. She told him that she'd already checked all the rooms, so the manager began to search the grounds. The manager came upon a gruesome discovery in an empty field behind the hotel. This would not be the final victim, but the biggest shock was yet to come. We are on day ten of the 12 Nightmares Before Christmas. On a freezing cold night in December of 1977, two women in their mid-thirties were leaving the Forker's Café at 64 Union Street in Newark, Ohio. At 2:30 a.m., Joyce Vermillion, a barmaid at the café, and Karen Dodrill (dod-rill), a patron and friend of Joyce's, were preparing to call it a night. Karen had been out celebrating her birthday and had offered to give her friend Joyce a ride home. Since it was minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit, Karen went out to warm up her car first and was headed back into the bar when she was gunned down by a person waiting in the bushes. Since there was a homemade silencer on the gun, Joyce had no warning of any danger and walked out of the building and was shot and killed as well. (Some sources say they were walking across the parking lot when they were gunned down.) When Joyce failed to return home from work, her husband notified the police. No one knew that there was not just one killer at work; there were two, and they were related.Join Jen and Cam of Our True Crime Podcast as we discuss ‘Ohio's 22 Caliber Killers: The Lewingdon Brothers.'Thank you to our team:Written and researched by Lauretta AllenListener Discretion by Edward October from Octoberpod AMExecutive Producer Nico Vitesse of The Inky PawprintSources:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_and_Thaddeus_Lewingdonhttps://mail.crimelibrary.org/serial_killers/partners/lewingdon_bros/4.htmlhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/288325368/?match=1&terms=Joyce%20Vermillion%20Karen%20Dodrillhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/288325794/?match=1&terms=Joyce%20Vermillion%20Karen%20Dodrillhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/288326901/?match=1&terms=Joyce%20Vermillion%20Karen%20Dodrillhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/288331767/?match=1&terms=Joyce%20Vermillion%20Karen%20Dodrillhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/989648304/?match=1&terms=%22Robert%20McCann%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/601876460/?match=1&terms=%22Robert%20McCann%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/844598598/?match=1&terms=Robert%20Mickey%20McCannhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/406055736/?match=1&terms=Jenkins%20Joneshttps://www.newspapers.com/image/406055736/?match=1&terms=Jenkins%20Joneshttps://static1.squarespace.com/static/5054b15de4b02b42cb2ebd87/t/58aef25a17bffc1271928016/1487860323271/HistTimes201401.pdfhttp://wiki.lickingcountylibrary.info/Murders_and_Homicideshttps://www.newspapers.com/image/863804609/?match=1&terms=%22Claudia%20Yasko%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/825445876/?match=1&terms=%22Claudia%20Yasko%22%20confessedhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/903090856/?match=1&terms=%22Gerald%20Fields%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/297373789/?match=1&terms=%22Gerald%20Fields%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/288468878/?match=1&terms=%22Gerald%20Fields%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/296336484/?match=1&terms=%22Jerry%20Martin%22%20%20Marthahttps://www.newspapers.com/image/288494235/?match=1&terms=%22Jerry%20Martin%22%20%20Marthahttps://www.newspapers.com/image/287438136/?match=1&terms=%22Joseph%20Annick%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/157391755/?match=1&terms=%22Joseph%20Annick%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/295929917/?match=1&terms=%22Claudia%20Yasko%22%20https://www.newspapers.com/image/287557372/?match=1&terms=Lewingdon%20organized%20crimehttps://www.newspapers.com/image/296705157/?match=1&terms=John%20Vodhanel%20chargeshttps://www.newspapers.com/image/1065476941/?match=1&terms=John%20Vodhanel%20chargeshttps://www.newspapers.com/image/719952673/?match=1&terms=Christine%20Herdmanhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/406056639/?match=1&terms=Christine%20Herdmanhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/395561556/?match=1&terms=%22Jerry%20Martin%22%20obituary
It is day eight of our 12 Nightmares Before Christmas. At 5:45 a.m. on May 12, 2005, Michael Ross woke up and got out of bed as usual. It was a partly cloudy morning in Somers, Connecticut, and the day would be warm and pleasant. At 6:00 a.m., Michael had oatmeal for breakfast, then watched television and read the newspaper. After reading for a while, he received communion from a Catholic priest. The day was going well—pretty typical for him, actually. He visited with family and friends in the afternoon for a few hours. The only thing unusual about Michael's dinner of turkey a la king, rice, fruit, mixed vegetables, and white bread was that it would be his last because, a few hours later, Michael Ross was executed by the state of Connecticut. It was the first execution in the state of Connecticut since Joseph “Mad Dog” Taborsky was electrocuted in 1960. As we start this episode, it is day seven of our 12 Nightmares Before Christmas. On Sunday, February 16, 1997, around 9:45 to 10:00 a.m., an employee arrived at Captain D's restaurant on Lebanon Road in Donelson, Tennessee, ready to start another routine day. But as he approached the establishment, an unsettling sight greeted him: the doors were firmly locked, which should not have been the case since two other employees were scheduled to open earlier. He went to a neighboring restaurant to call Captain D's, and when he received a busy signal, he felt relief. After a few minutes, he tried again, but the phone continued to ring this time. He knew something was wrong. Concerned for his colleagues, he contacted another employee whose father served as a Metro police officer. When the employee's father arrived at the scene, they entered the restaurant between 11 a.m. and noon. What they found was shocking. In an instant, the routine of a Sunday morning was replaced by an unspeakable tragedy, and the community would soon grapple with the aftermath of this horrific crime. Sadly, this was just the beginning. It is day six of our 12 Nightmares Before Christmas, and we are headed to Germany. After World War II, Germany was divided into four Allied occupation zones, with the Soviet Union controlling East Germany and East Berlin, while the United States, France, and the U.K. managed Western Germany and West Berlin. By 1949, Europe had transformed dramatically, symbolized by the creation of two Germanies. Initially, movement between the two regions was unrestricted, but as East Germans fled westward in droves, the border was sealed in 1961, culminating in the Berlin Wall, a defining emblem of the Cold War. In Plauen, East Germany, young Volker Eckert grew up in a Communist city near the Czech border. As a child, Volker developed a fixation on hair, playing with his sister's dolls and mother's wigs, which sparked sexual fantasies he kept secret. By age 14, his obsession with hair escalated into violence. On May 7, 1974, he strangled his classmate Sylvia Unterdörfel in her home under the pretense of needing help with homework, driven by an uncontrollable urge to feel her hair. Fearing exposure, he killed her and staged her death as a suicide. Sadly, Sylvia would not be his only victim. In fact, there would be many more. For the fifth day of our 12 Nightmares Before Christmas, we are headed north to Anchorage, Alaska, where we meet 52-year-old Mindy Schloss. Mindy had moved to Anchorage back in the 1980s by accident. Mindy came for a visit and never left. Mindy worked as a nurse practitioner in Fairbanks' psychiatric department. The commute from Anchorage to Fairbanks was a long one-hour flight, but Mindy had to make the trip twice a month. Her good friend Gerri would care for her cat Willy while she was gone working. The friends would meet up before Mindy left for work, so when Gerri didn't hear from Mindy, she called and left a message with Mindy checking in, but Mindy did not return the call, which was unlike Mindy. “Maybe she is just busy' her friend thought. Mindy's other friend, Bob Conway, her on-again and off-again boyfriend, reached out to Mindy as well, and when he could not leave a voicemail due to a full mailbox, he knew something was wrong. Bob called Gerri to inquire if she had heard from Mindy. When Gerri said no, they both felt something was wrong. It is day four of our 12 Nightmares Before Christmas, and we are headed to the Midwest. Every city has trouble with crime. Just watch the news for an hour, and it's pretty evident that violence occurs even in small communities, no matter how many disbelieving residents claim otherwise. However, some cities statistically have a higher crime rate than others, and many reasons and factors contribute to that. According to the U.S. News Real Estate website, Kansas City, Kansas, located in the middle of the United States, has a slightly higher crime rate than the national average. In 2001, Kansas City had 10,909 violent crimes. Among those were 92 murders, 945 rapes, 7,449 assaults and 2,423 robberies. But, oddly enough, there was no category for “Death by Vampire Cannibal.”Join Jen and Cam of Our True Crime Podcast on this episode entitled ‘The Kansas City Vampire: Marc Sappington Day.'Thank you to our team:Written and researched by Lauretta AllenListener Discretion by Edward October from Octoberpod AMExecutive Producer Nico Vitesse of The Inky Paw PrintSources:https://youtube/Hv3ISDg811U?si=DtrujPt8oYKO-Lcwhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marc_Sappingtonhttps://murderpedia.org/male.S/s/sappington-marc.htmhttps://www.crimelibrary.org/serial_killers/weird/sappington/1.htmlhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/686892606/?match=1&terms=%22Marc%20Sappington%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/686883369/match=1&terms=%22Marc%20Sappington%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/686887661/?match=1&terms=%22Marc%20Sappington%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/686895681/match=1&terms=%22Marc%20Sappington%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/686894452/?match=1&terms=%22Marc%20Sappington%22https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/1977/06/11/schizophrenic-episodes-linked-to-the-drug-pcp/647db04d-f0c2-4a1e-aee5-2cdc458aa203/https://www.newspapers.com/image/686817896/?match=1&terms=David%20Mashakhttps://caselaw.findlaw.com/court/ks-supreme-court/1066394.htmlhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/687193968/?match=1&terms=%22Marc%20Sappington%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/687337700/?terms=%22Marc%20Sappington%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/688165754/?match=1&terms=%22Marc%20Sappington%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/688165754/?match=1&terms=%22Marc%20Sappington%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/688172334/?terms=%22Marc%20Sappington%22https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWDDcDGiGaA&ab_channel=KMBC9
It is day 3 of our 12 Nightmares Before Christmas. In December 1995, 19-year-old Conan Wade Hale and his accomplice, Jon Susbauer, unleashed a wave of terror in Oregon. It began on December 4, when they ransacked a woman's home, stealing valuables worth thousands and slashing furniture before fleeing. Days later, on December 16, they drove a stolen silver Chevrolet Suburban through Eugene and encountered two teenagers, Kara Krause and Jesse Jarvis, parked on a desolate road. After Susbauer posed as a property owner to engage the couple, a masked figure armed with a machete emerged from the darkness, forcing the teens to strip before sexually assaulting Kara. Both survived and later identified Susbauer as the "property owner," though only Jesse tentatively linked Hale to the attack. The duo escalated their spree on December 19, burglarizing another home to steal valuables, including a rabbit-fur jacket and a .38-caliber revolver, leaving behind more vandalism. By December 20, cruising the streets in the stolen Suburban, they crossed paths with Hale's 15-year-old ex-girlfriend Kristal Bendele and her friends. These young teens would not be as fortunate as those before. We are headed west on day two of our 12 Nightmares Before Christmas. It was pitch black on a gorgeous night in the middle of the Arizona desert in October 2003. There was not a cloud in the sky, but billions of stars were observable by the naked eye because Bumble Bee Road is in the middle of nowhere. In every direction, there was nothing but 90,000 acres of rolling hills dotted with Saguaro cactus spikes. Brandon Rumbaugh, age 20, a personal fitness instructor, and his girlfriend, Lisa Marie Gurrieri, a nineteen-year-old secretary for the Salt River Project, were celebrating their one-year anniversary. They had initially wanted to go to Disneyland to commemorate the occasion, but it was too expensive. The couple had been discussing marriage, so they didn't want to spend much money. So, instead, they thought it would be romantic to go back to the Arizona desert and do some stargazing as they did on their first date. This time, though, they decided to camp out under the stars. Lisa had never been camping before, and the couple didn't really have camping equipment either, so they asked Lisa's mother, Paula, if they could borrow her brand-new white F-150 truck, and they would just sleep in the back of the vehicle with some sleeping bags. Paula wasn't thrilled about them taking the truck since it needed an oil change, but in the end, she gave them permission. Lisa also borrowed her mother's video camera. Then, Lisa made another request; she asked her mother not to tell her Uncle Mike where they were going because she knew that he'd be upset and worried about them. The area had become known as a “party destination. Unfortunately, it would turn out that Uncle Mike had every reason to worry.Join Jen and Cam of Our True Crime Podcast on this episode entitled ‘The Bumblebee Road Murders: Brandon Rumbaugh & Lisa Marie Gurrieri.'If you have any information about this case, please contact the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office or Silent Witness at 480–948–6377.Thank you to our team:Written and researched by Lauretta AllenListener Discretion by Edward October from Octoberpod AMExecutive Producer Nico Vitesse of The Inky PawprintSources:https://www.youtube.com/watchv=Vy0TYqOo_sg&ab_channel=RachelShannonTrueCrimehttps://www.findagrave.com/memorial/22764900/lisa-marie-gurrierihttps://www.newspapers.com/image/125512144/match=1&terms=Paula%20Gurrieri%20https://www.newspapers.com/image/125512236/match=1&terms=Paula%20Gurrieri%20https://www.newspapers.com/image/125513123/match=1&terms=Paula%20Gurrieri%20https://www.newspapers.com/image/125454864/match=1&terms=Paula%20Gurrieri%20https://www.newspapers.com/image/125254509/match=1&terms=Paula%20Gurrieri%20https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/205289317/brandon-keith-rumbaughhttps://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/azcentral/name/brandon-rumbaugh-obituary?id=27815392https://www.newspapers.com/image/125516344/match=1&terms=Lisa%20Gurrieri%20https://www.newspapers.com/image/125255612/match=1&terms=Lisa%20Gurrieri%20https://www.newspapers.com/image/125503770/?terms=Lisa%20Gurrieri%20https://www.newspapers.com/image/125503785/match=1&terms=Lisa%20Gurrieri%20https://www.newspapers.com/image/125583182/?match=1&terms=Lisa%20Gurrieri%20 (Rusty Rankin)https://www.newspapers.com/image/126708234/?match=1&terms=Lisa%20Gurrieri%20 (Sonoma Ca couple)https://www.newspapers.com/image/125478691/?match=1&terms=Lisa%20Gurrieri%20https://www.newspapers.com/image/361287432/?match=1&terms=Lisa%20Gurrieri%20 (14 years later)https://www.newspapers.com/image/619647478/match=1&terms=Lisa%20Gurrieri%20https://www.abc15.com/news/crime/nearly-20-years-since-the-murders-of-lisa-gurrieri-and-brandon-rumbaugh-in-yavapai-countyhttps://www.9news.com/article/news/local/murder-suspect-dies-after-police-standoff/73-344894944https://darrensrides.blogspot.com/2011/09/crown-king-arizona.htmlhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/125583750/?match=1&terms=%22Rusty%20Rankin%22https://www.12news.com/article/news/crime/true-crime/scottsdale-couple-murdered-camping-trip-2003-unsolved/75-6cc84714-3ffc-49d5-9a06-5ba344db75f0 (image of the last photo taken on the camera)https://www.oxygen.com/crime-news/brandon-rumbaugh-lisa-gurrieri-cold-case-could-camera-hold-cluehttps://www.newspapers.com/image/125496399/match=1&terms=Michael%20Villershttps://the-m-files.medium.com/double-homicide-on-bumble-bee-road-4fa16a21d71https://www.nps.gov/aboutus/mortality-data.htmhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/125503785/match=1&terms=Crime%20Bumble%20Bee%20
On the first day of our Seventh Annual "12 Nightmares Before Christmas," we are heading just north of us to Fairfield, Iowa. On November 2, 2021, the community of Fairfield, Iowa, was devastated when beloved Spanish teacher Nohema Graber, 66, went missing. She hadn't been heard from since she set out for her daily walk in Chautauqua Park. Just one day later, on November 3, her badly beaten body was discovered—mere hours after she was reported missing. Authorities found her remains concealed beneath a tarp, a wheelbarrow, and railroad ties. The police confirmed that Graber had suffered significant trauma to the head. This cruel act shattered the peace of a close-knit community, leaving residents not only devastated but grappling with a haunting question: what could drive someone to commit such an unthinkable act of violence? The answer would emerge just days later, but the age of the perpetrators and the motive behind their actions would leave the community speechless.Join Cam and Jen of Our True Crime Podcast to discuss “The Brutal Murder of Nohema Graber.”Special thank you to Abby Stout, who suggested this case to us. We're heading to Hinckley, Utah—a remote place tied to one of the most heinous crimes in Utah's history. It was October 14, 1979, a crisp autumn afternoon in Salt Lake City, when four-year-old Alonzo Daniels was last seen playing in the courtyard of his apartment complex. When his mother checked on him, he was nowhere to be found. Alonzo had simply disappeared. Desperation set in as relatives and neighbors combed the grounds and nearby streets; their search turned up nothing. Police arrived, questioning residents door-to-door. One of the first to be interviewed was Roger Downs, a neighbor who lived directly across the hall from the Daniels family. Downs denied knowing anything about the boy's disappearance, his demeanor was calm, and his answers were routine. Leads poured in, but each one proved fruitless. Alonzo had seemingly disappeared into thin air, leaving a community haunted by unanswered questions. What no one knew was that little Alonzo had already been murdered as his mom continued her search for him. The killer was hiding in plain sight and was far from being done.Join Cam and Jen on this episode of Our True Crime Podcast entitled ‘I'd Do It Again: Arthur Gary Bishop.'Listener Discretion by @OctoberpodVHSAll Music is by our Editor @theinkypawprintProudly sponsored by sleepcreme.comThe World's Original and Finest CBD Topical for SleepOrder your bottle at sleepcreme.com. The Memorial Day weekend brought swarms of tourists to Niagara Falls, eager to celebrate under the sun. Just an hour away, a group of local teens gathered at Wayne Fleet Quarry, diving into the water and marking the unofficial start of summer. Alison and her friends, thrilled to leave the school year behind, decided to up the ante by jumping from an old bridge spanning the quarry. But as they reached the top, something unusual in the water caught their eye: a large, bulky bag emblazoned with "US" in bold, black letters. Curiosity piqued, they made their way down to inspect it. But the water around the bag turned red before they could haul it to shore. This wasn't discarded junk—junk doesn't bleed. Panicked, the teens scrambled up the road, frantically waving down a passing car, whose driver quickly called the police.Join Jen and Cam of Our True Crime Podcast on this episode entitled ‘A Body in the River: The Murder of Dr. Paul Campagna.'Listener discretion is by @octoberpodVHS.All Music is by our Editor @theinkypawprint.This episode is proudly sponsored by Yaman.Welcome to Yaman the very latest and greatest in J-Beauty innovations Listeners can visit YA-MANUSA.com/discount/TCP for a 20% discountAlso proudly sponsored by sleepcreme.comThe World's Original and Finest CBD Topical for SleepOrder your bottle at sleepcreme.com. In the heart of Albuquerque, Pastor Greg Griego often stood before the fire department and the local jail, sharing his powerful testimony of redemption. Once entangled in the world of gangs in California, he had found a new path through faith, a transformation that resonated with those who listened. He was well-known and well-liked in the community. Greg Griego. Once a soldier in the 82nd Airborne Division, Greg had led a life marred by drugs and gangs. However, during a stint in jail in California in the early 1990s, he experienced a profound transformation, finding faith and embracing Christianity. This pivotal change set him on a path of redemption, ultimately leading him to serve others. While his wife, Sarah, dedicated herself to homeschooling their ten children in their modest home in the semi-rural South Valley. Greg had five children before he met his wife, Sarah, with whom he had five more. Greg turned their backyard barn into a sanctuary for released prisoners. Most would agree that Greg and Sarah were strict parents. They prohibited their children from playing violent video games and meticulously monitored their television choices. It is January 8, 1981, and we going to Lassen County, California, where we encounter 21-year-old Kevin Thorpe. After completing high school, Kevin enlisted in the Navy, serving for three years before returning to his hometown of Ridgecrest, California. Upon his return, he met a young woman named Laura Craig at a social gathering. Laura, a mother to a young child, captivated Kevin, who was undeterred by her circumstances; his affection for her was profound. Their relationship developed quickly and intensely—an embodiment of the adage, “When you know, you know.”Eager for a fresh start, Laura and Kevin packed their belongings into Kevin's white Ford Elite, towing a utility trailer, and left Ridgecrest for Oregon, where they hoped to be closer to Kevin's brother. They made the bittersweet decision to leave their baby, Treena, with Laura's mother until they settled in. As they took the scenic backroads north on Highway 395, a sudden jolt signaled trouble: the trailer had a flat tire. They decided to press on to Madeline, where they encountered a seemingly helpful man who offered assistance and invited Laura to warm up inside with his wife. Just as they began to fix the tire, three other men arrived, discussing plans to meet women in Oregon. Though Kevin wanted to continue their journey that night, little did they know, that the warmth of the cafe would soon be overshadowed by a chilling darkness, as their lives would be forever altered by the intentions of those they encountered.Join Cam and Jen on this episode of Our True Crime Podcast entitled ‘Real Life Boogeymen: The Murders of Kevin Thorpe and Laura Craig.'Listener Discretion by @OctoberpodVHSAll Music is by our Editor @theinkypawprintThis episode is proudly sponsored by Yaman. On the morning of January 7, 2018, at 9:25 a.m., a chilling call was made to the 911 dispatch in Belgrade, Montana. A distressed woman reported that her neighbor had just come to her home in a panic, explaining she had returned to her residence to discover her two roommates had been shot. One roommate, she believed, was gravely injured but still clinging to life. Terrified, the neighbor had fled the scene and sought refuge, desperately asking for help. Law enforcement officers were immediately dispatched, though they had no idea what they were walking into. The initial report indicated that one female was dead and another, a 30-year-old, was wounded and unconscious. Recognizing this may be a difficult scene, the first responding officer requested backup as he approached the scene. Upon arrival, the officer was met by a visibly shaken woman—the roommate who had gone to her neighbor for help, now standing before him, clearly distraught. She was the third resident of the home, the one who had just witnessed the aftermath of what appeared to be a horrifying crime within her own home. On Sunday, August 23, 1992, Tammy Jo Zywicki, a 21-year-old college student, had just dropped off her 19-year-old brother, Daren, at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. The siblings had been traveling from the East Coast, and Tammy was eager to return to college. During their journey, the car, a white 1985 Pontiac T1000, had been experiencing issues, requiring frequent stops to add oil or water. After staying the night, Daren advised Tammy to monitor the vehicle closely on her journey back to college and pull over to a rest area if it acted up, especially given the day's heat. Tammy would never make it back to college.Join Cam and Jen on this episode of Our True Crime Podcast entitled ‘Who Killed Tammy Zywicki?Listener Discretion by @octoberpodVHSMusic by our E.P. @theinkypawprintThis episode is proudly sponsored by sleepcreme.comUse code “OTC PODCAST” (all one word) at checkout to save twenty bucks on the first order!Sources:https://iowacoldcases.org/case-summaries/tammy-zywickihttps://patch.com/illinois/joliet/people-magazine-investigates-seeks-solve-1992-zywicki-murderhttps://www.fbi.gov/wanted/seeking-info/tammy-j.-zywicki/@@download.pdfhttps://www.live5news.com/2022/08/23/who-killed-tammy-zywicki-sc-grads-death-remains-unsolved-30-years-later/https://patch.com/illinois/across-il/tammy-zywicki-slaying-still-unsolved-30-years-laterhttps://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/local/2024/03/23/killing-of-grinnell-college-student-tammy-jo-zywicki-remains-unsolved-over-30-years-later-cold-case/72879354007/https://www.cbsnews.com/chicago/news/who-killed-tammy-zywicki/https://www.fourstateshomepage.com/news/national/30-year-cold-case-iowa-college-students-body-found-in-mo/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1hkl8CLmFwhttps://www.foxcarolina.com/2022/08/23/who-killed-tammy-zywicki-sc-grads-death-remains-unsolved-30-years-later/https://patch.com/illinois/across-il/tammy-zywicki-slaying-still-unsolved-30-years-laterhttps://m.facebook.com/notes/who-killed-tammy-zywicki/previously-published-names-of-persons-of-interest-in-the-murder-of-tammy-jo-zywi/10156737632236921/https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/crime-and-courts/2020/05/08/illinois-police-clark-perry-baldwin-not-suspect-1992-slaying/3101500001/https://www.wyff4.com/article/memorial-ride-for-tammy-zywicki/41137145https://people.com/crime/tammy-zywicki-murder-case-people-magazine-investigates/
It is May 24, 2000, and we are going to Tuscarawas County in Ohio to New Philadelphia. It is exactly what you think of when you say small-town America, with lots of farmland and friendly people. Elizabeth Reiser who goes by Liz is a 17-year-old high school student who is looking forward to graduating and finding out all that life has to hold for her. Her good friend 18 year old Brandi Hicks asked Liz to come over and stay the night with her. On this day Brandi who was in the school choir was going to the choir banquet and wanted Liz to go with her. Even though it was a school night, her mother relented and said yes. That evening, the two friends visited a video store in New Philadelphia after the choir banquet to rent some videos for a movie night. When they left the store and started to get into the car, a man approached them. The man claimed he had no means of getting home and asked the girls for a ride, telling them he lived nearby. The girls hesitated and told them they really needed to get home. The man then offered them $20 as an incentive. The girls did not want to give this stranger a ride, but he urged them to, and they relented. They were young, naive, and always looked for the best in people. After all, he only needed to go across town and then they could go back and watch the movie they had rented. Neither Brandi nor Liz would ever get to watch that movie. It is just after 10:30 p.m. on June 3, 1999, and we go to 23-year-old Bobby Bornt's home in Perry, Oklahoma. He sleeps on the couch, and his 9-month-old baby boy sleeps in a nearby room. Suddenly, a loud noise startled him awake. Three men entered the house after kicking in the front door. The three strangers beat Bobby mercilessly, but not all were strangers; Bobby recognized 23-year-old Clayton Locket as the tattoo artist who had recently done some artwork on him. The other two men were 26-year-old Shawn Mathis and Clayton's 17-year-old cousin Alfonzo Lockett. Clayton wielded a shotgun, which he used to strike Bobby repeatedly. After the brutal beating, the attackers bound Bobby's hands behind his back with duct tape, gagged him, and left him on the couch. They then proceeded to ransack the house in search of drugs. What started as a “teach him a lesson” would end with a vicious murder on not just this warm June night but yet another murder in 2014 in what some experts would deem the most inhumane. Today's case takes us to Mason City, Iowa. It's July 25, 1993, and like most school-aged kids, summer is the reward after being stuck in a classroom for nine months. Six-year-old Amber Duncan was no different. After an afternoon of playing on a Slip 'n Slide with her best friend, Brittney, Amber headed home around 3 PM, still wet from a day of fun in the water. As the little girl waved goodbye to her best friend, no one could have known it would be the last time she'd be seen. But Amber wasn't the only one to go missing. What followed were years of agonizing questions and desperate searches. This is one of the most disturbing cases I've ever covered, and the man at the center of it all is a real-life Walter White. Det Bruce Jordan takes the call and arrives on the scene to find two people savagely murdered. The first victim, 74-year-old Carl Collier, was located in the kitchen, which had blood spatter everywhere. Walking through to discover the next victim, investigators see a small bloody barefoot print on the floor. The print would lead them to the basement stairs. Detectives make their way down the stairs, where they see the second victim, 73-year-old Sarah Collier, at the bottom of the staircase. The scene was bloody and brutal. It was clear that the perpetrator was violent and skilled in murder. Today's case takes us to Marietta, Georgia. The book centered on this case was one of the first true crime books I had read, and it has always stuck with me. The book Secrets Never Lie: The Death of Sara Tokers- A Southern Tragedy of Money, Murder, and Innocence Betrayed is by R. Robin McDonald. It is November 29, 1992, and Thanksgiving weekend has just ended. 39-year-old Sara has been visiting with her parents and her sisters in Bradenton Florida for the holiday weekend but it was time for her and her two boys, 6-year-old Ricky and 4-year-old Mike load up the Toyota SUV to make the 9-hour trek back home to Marietta Georgia, an affluent suburb of Atlanta. After the three had departed, Sara's husband Fred called the parent's home to inquire if they were on the road yet. Fred, who had been there earlier, had departed earlier as he had a meeting with a client that he couldn't miss. Sara's father, Dr John Ambrusko had answered the call from Fred and told him they they had just departed. It was almost 10 pm when Sara and the boys pulled into her garage. Sara started to unload the car as one of the boys had fallen asleep in his car seat. As she was unloading, a strange man came out of the darkness. The man, who was carrying a sawed-off shotgun, forced Sara and little Ricky back into the car. What happened next is what nightmares are made of, what mothers fear most and is proof that true evil exists. Former Dauphin County Chief Detective Thomas Brennan's phone rings between 3 am and 4 am from a responding officer requesting assistance on a crime scene. When the detective arrives, he notices a car pulled close to a ditch. Brennen, who received training at the FBI Behavioral Science Unit during his tenure with the state police, knew immediately what he was dealing with when he arrived at the Conrail crime scene. After Brennan asks the officer for details, the officer explains that a Conrail train security guard had stumbled onto a man attacking a woman. The man was startled and he ran off. Thankfully the victim was injured but alive so he called for police and waited with her until help arrived. Detective Brennan noted that the vehicle's trunk was open and inside was what many would call a “kit” such as rope, and duct tape, as in things to help someone kill or at least bind another person. Outside the car on the ground were plastic mats, seemingly to cover the ground inside the ditch. It was now clear to Brennan that this man had planned to kill his victim, put her in that ditch, and drive away. What was also clear to the detective was that this was not this man's first time killing someone, he had done it before and he knew what he was doing. On August 7, 1995, in Aroma Park, Illinois, 9-year-old Christopher Meyer approached his mom, Mika Moulton, asking for permission to visit the Aroma Park boat launch by the Kankakee River. Christopher, who spent his summers with his mother but resided with his father, Jim Meyer, in Walla Walla, Washington, during the school year, was eager to explore. Mika permitted him to go but set a curfew, instructing him to return home by 5 pm. When 5 o'clock came and went, Mika began to worry. She went out to search for Christopher but was unsuccessful so she returned home to phone the police and report Christopher missing. At the time, no one knew it but Christopher was not this person's first victim. In the early hours of May 14, 1983, two California Highway Patrol officers pulled over a suspected drunk driver on the San Diego Freeway in Mission Viejo, California. Instead of staying in his vehicle, the driver jumped out, pouring the contents of a beer bottle onto the road as he exited. His disheveled appearance caught the officers' attention as he approached their patrol car. The officers asked for the man's driver's license, and he readily admitted that he had been drinking beer, but he claimed to be sober. Sergeant Michael Howard approached the vehicle and noticed a man slumped in the passenger's seat, partially obscured by a jacket, with empty beer bottles strewn around his feet. A folding knife was visible on the driver's seat. Howard tapped on the window, but there was no response. The man was unconscious and had no shoes on. His pants were unzipped, with his genitals hanging out of his pants. The officer attempted to find a pulse, but there was none. A closer look at the man indicated that the man had been strangled. This standard DUI arrest just changed to murder, but this is far from the only murder this man would commit. Commerce City, Colorado, is a working-class community with a higher-than-average crime rate. On March 17, 2013, Nate Leon embarked on a journey to Domino's Pizza around 10:45 a.m. Nate, a devoted father of three and a full-time employee at IBM, also worked weekends at Domino's to supplement his income. On that particular day, Domino's received a call requesting a pizza delivery to an unspecified intersection. The employee informed the caller that an exact address was needed for delivery, prompting the caller to hang up abruptly. Minutes later, the caller phoned back, asking for a pizza delivered to a truck stop in North Denver. Although such requests were not their standard practice, the manager made an exception after the caller explained he was stranded at the truck stop, awaiting a tow truck. It is March 25, 1987, and police are about to enter a run-down home on North Marshall Street. Even though officers were told what they were about to encounter, there was no way anyone could ever prepare for what they saw. The smell hit them first before they even got into the residence. Officers were gagging as they made their way inside, trying desperately to concentrate on the task at hand. A sign outside the home indicated that it was a place of worship, claiming to be the United Church of the Ministries of God, but it was far from that: it was a severely demented man's torture chamber. Katie Eastburn had posted a classified advertisement in a local newspaper catering to the military community near Pope Air Force Base and Fort Bragg to sell their English setter, Dixie. At the time, Katie's husband Gary, an Air Force captain, was away attending a squadron officer's school in Alabama, leaving her at home with their three young children. The couple had met twelve years prior at a singles' softball game, and Gary vividly remembers her powerful impact on him, saying, "It was like somebody hit me between the eyes with a ball-peen hammer. I was madly in love with her." They tied the knot in 1975, and Katie became pregnant three years later. In 1983, the Air Force relocated Gary and his family to Pope Air Force Base, where he served as air traffic control chief. When Gary proposed the idea of moving to England, Katie had some reservations; however, her passion for horses played a significant role in her decision, and after Gary assured her that she and their daughters would have ample opportunities to ride in the English countryside, she agreed to the move. Gary typically made Saturday morning calls to check in with Katie while he was away, but when he tried to reach her on Saturday, May 11, she didn't pick up, and he wasn't overly concerned yet. He tried repeatedly that day to reach Katie, but the calls went unanswered. When a neighbor noticed the newspapers were piling up, he looked in a window and made a gruesome discovery. We are headed to Bemidji, Minnesota, where firefighters are at the scene of a mobile home fire where 35-year-old single mother Melissa Norby lived. As they worked to put out the fire, they noticed that windows had been blown away from the building by as much as 12 to 15 feet. They determined that the start of the fire seemed to be the primary bedroom. Once inside the home, in the bedroom they locate a gas can that had not burnt up in the fire. What else they find is much more disturbing. They find a body, but the body is underneath a mattress, and both the body and the mattress are severely burned. Furthermore, both were located in the middle of the home, not the bedroom. When firefighters noticed that the body had their hands taped and bound, they contacted the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Authorities rule it an arson, but it is clear that there is a homicide as well, but this is just the beginning of this twisted crime.Join Jen and Cam of Our True Crime Podcast as we discuss “Soul-Less: The Crimes of Jacob Kinn.”Promo is by British MurdersListener Discretion is by @octoberpodVHSMusic by our EP @theinkypawprintSources: https://wireofhope.com/prison-penpal-jacob-kinn/https://lptv.org/tag/jacob-kinn/https://www.kare11.com/article/news/jacob-kinn-sentenced-to-52-years-for-murder-kidnapping/89-452234228https://www.twincities.com/2017/06/26/bemidji-man-sentenced-for-raping-5-year-old-girl-strangling-her-caretaker/https://www.imdb.com/title/tt26761622/https://www.11alive.com/article/news/race-against-time-the-search-for-a-missing-5-year-old/85-516024729https://www.cbsnews.com/minnesota/news/jacob-kinn-murder-rape-sentence/https://www.crimeandinvestigation.co.uk/videos/jacob-kinn-monster-who-asked-unthinkable-interrogation-rawhttps://www.cbsnews.com/minnesota/news/search-warrants-bemidji-girls-kidnapping/https://www.bemidjipioneer.com/news/waiting-for-answers-family-of-slain-bemidji-woman-wonders-why-no-arrests-charges-in-her-deathhttps://www.valleynewslive.com/content/news/Doctor-finds-Bemidji-kidnap-suspect-competent-to-stand-trial-410952165.htmlhttps://www.kare11.com/article/news/warrant-babysitter-plotted-bemidji-kidnapping/89-312072440https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuDKw1_a5zk

Make sure to like, subscribe, and tune in each day.We made it to Day 12! We hope you've had a wonderful holiday season! Thank you all for such a great 2023! Most people have heard of the Green River Killer. Washington State's most notorious serial killer was hard to miss in the 1990s. His moniker and his horrendous deeds could be found in most major newspapers across America. But there was another serial killer preying on society's weak and vulnerable at about the same time in the exact same state. While Gary Ridgeway was killing women and dumping them on the western side of Washington, Robert Lee Yates Jr was doing the same thing just four hours to the east on the other side of the state. In fact, at one point, investigators thought that the Green River Killer had just moved his hunting ground. But after a few bodies showed up in Spokane with gunshot wounds and plastic grocery bags wrapped around their heads, they realized that the MO was totally different. With a growing sense of dread, investigators realized that the sex workers and runaways of Spokane were not the victims of the Green River Killer. They were the victims of an entirely different monster.
