She explains that simply churning out words isn't enough. The focus should be on impactful, well-researched pieces that that resonate with audiences in 2025, Ann also discusses the role of AI in content generation, highlighting both its potential benefits and the inherent risks of losing the human touch. Overall, she stresses the need for a thoughtful approach to content strategy, ensuring that it aligns with organizational goals while engaging target audiences effectively.Key Takeaways Thought leadership is a critical strategy that goes beyond simple content creation and requires careful planning and execution. Thought leadership should be strategically integrated into communications campaigns, encompassing varied content types such as white papers, long-form articles, and social media. What do marketers and competitive bakers have in common? Quite a lot, actually. Both work amid time constraints, follow recipes for success, and have to express creativity under pressure.  And there's a lot marketers can learn from these competitive bakers, so that's what we're talking about this week.In this episode, we're taking B2B marketing lessons from Food Network's seasonal baking series, Summer Baking Championship.Together with the help of our special guest, the Director of Content Marketing at Splunk, Ann Smith, we talk about putting your own spin on a recipe, tasting what you bake, and not trying to do too much at once. About our guest, Ann SmithAnn Smith joined Splunk a year ago as the Director of Content Marketing, leading a team of content strategists and writers to produce award-winning, pipeline-generating, headline-grabbing content. Prior to Splunk, she led content marketing for Oracle and held senior marketing roles at technology start-ups and small companies. She has a master of arts degree in Speech Communication from San Jose State University. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Summer Baking Championship:Put your own spin on a recipe. In other words, it's okay to use a recipe you know works, but don't just check the box with your content. Strive to also make an emotional connection with your audience. Ann says, “People that buy software are people too. And it's the storytelling and the ability to connect emotionally with readers that really makes it. Storytelling is that extra layer of icing on the cake.” Taste what you baked. Review your content to gauge its effectiveness. Looking back on past work is a great way to not only see your growth, but to take a candid look at what worked and what didn't. Ian says, “How many times have you made a meal and you didn't even taste it? My food is always criminally under-salted when I take it out because I just didn't taste it. So much marketing is like that. Go back and read that thing a year from now. Was that a good post? It's like, ‘No, it was not good.' Did you read it and like it? Did someone else on your team read it and like it?”Don't try to do too much. That's when you lose clarity on your message. It becomes instantly forgettable by your audience. Ian says, “The biggest thing is just writing way shorter and just telling one story at a time that has a single message that you're trying to leave people with. So many times we write an article and we want to pack 15 things into it. Dont. Just tell them one thing. I just want them to leave reading this thing with one singular lesson. And that's the thing that's going to stick.”Quotes *”People that buy software are people. Chief technology officers are people too. And it's the storytelling and the ability to connect emotionally with readers that really makes it. More than just, ‘I'm just following a recipe,' right? I'm just checking the box. Storytelling is that extra layer of icing on the cake.”*”Just be helpful, help educate [your audience] without expecting anything in return. If you can help your customer do something better, learn something new, without expecting anything back from them,  really genuinely wanting to help them succeed, you'll have customers for life.”Time Stamps[0:55] Meet Ann Smith, Director of Content Marketing at Splunk[1:36] Exploring Summer Baking Championship[2:39] Content Marketing at Splunk[5:13] The Success of Summer Baking Championship[9:17] Parallels Between Baking and Content Marketing[15:18] The Art of Storytelling in Marketing[19:29] The Art of Concise Writing[20:26] The Challenge of Simplifying Complex Messages[21:47] Avoiding Over-Salted Content[22:53] Relating to Your Audience[25:44] Embracing Authenticity in Writing[31:51] Effective Content Strategies[37:39] Final Thoughts and Best Advice for Marketing ProfessionalsLinksConnect with Ann on LinkedInLearn more about SplunkAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. By Adam Turteltaub Currently on hold due to pending court challenges, the SEC's rules to standardize climate-related disclosures created a fire storm of controversy and comments when first proposed. The final rules (assuming the courts sides with the SEC), explains Laura Ann Smith and Judy Mayo of the communications firm Labrador (LinkedIn), reflected strong industry pushback, easing the burden on some 4000 filers. Nonetheless, there are serious demands on industry. To quote from the SEC press release, registrants will be required to disclose: Climate-related risks that have had or are reasonably likely to have a material impact on the registrant's business strategy, results of operations, or financial condition; The actual and potential material impacts of any identified climate-related risks on the registrant's strategy, business model, and outlook; If, as part of its strategy, a registrant has undertaken activities to mitigate or adapt to a material climate-related risk, a quantitative and qualitative description of material expenditures incurred and material impacts on financial estimates and assumptions that directly result from such mitigation or adaptation activities; Specified disclosures regarding a registrant's activities, if any, to mitigate or adapt to a material climate-related risk including the use, if any, of transition plans, scenario analysis, or internal carbon prices; Any oversight by the board of directors of climate-related risks and any role by management in assessing and managing the registrant's material climate-related risks; Any processes the registrant has for identifying, assessing, and managing material climate-related risks and, if the registrant is managing those risks, whether and how any such processes are integrated into the registrant's overall risk management system or processes; Information about a registrant's climate-related targets or goals, if any, that have materially affected or are reasonably likely to materially affect the registrant's business, results of operations, or financial condition. Disclosures would include material expenditures and material impacts on financial estimates and assumptions as a direct result of the target or goal or actions taken to make progress toward meeting such target or goal; For large accelerated filers (LAFs) and accelerated filers (AFs) that are not otherwise exempted, information about material Scope 1 emissions and/or Scope 2 emissions; For those required to disclose Scope 1 and/or Scope 2 emissions, an assurance report at the limited assurance level, which, for an LAF, following an additional transition period, will be at the reasonable assurance level; The capitalized costs, expenditures expensed, charges, and losses incurred as a result of severe weather events and other natural conditions, such as hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, drought, wildfires, extreme temperatures, and sea level rise, subject to applicable one percent and de minimis disclosure thresholds, disclosed in a note to the financial statements; The capitalized costs, expenditures expensed, and losses related to carbon offsets and renewable energy credits or certificates (RECs) if used as a material component of a registrant's plans to achieve its disclosed climate-related targets or goals, disclosed in a note to the financial statements; and If the estimates and assumptions a registrant uses to produce the financial statements were materially impacted by risks and uncertainties associated with severe weather events and other natural conditions or any disclosed climate-related targets or transition plans, a qualitative description of how the development of such estimates and assumptions was impacted, disclosed in a note to the financial statements. Bill completed the book after 7 years of research from the source material.  Bill is a rare book collector and seller and it all started with his purchase of Jim Burwell's copy of the multilith copy of the original Big Book.    In Part 1 of the interview with Bill Schaberg, we discuss:The genesis of the why he wrote the bookBill W's realization of why a book was writtenBill W's original plan to help alcoholics recoverHank Pankhurst - the founder that drank and how there would be no Big Book without himThe Oxford Group - how the originals got soberBill Schaberg's controversial take on who should be on the AA Mount RushmoreCheck out Bill Schaberg's site writingthebigbook.com where you can pick up his book, Writing the Big Book.Learn more about Hank Parkhurst at hankparkhurst.comWe have a favor to ask. Schools won't change on their own, often needing a push from concerned educators, community members and, most importantly, parents. But too often parents don't know how to get involved or how to speak out on behalf of their children.   Thankfully there are tools and resources out there to help parents understand their rights (and the rights of their children) and learn how to talk to policymakers and educational leaders about ensuring their children get the education they deserve. One of those organizations is African Caribbean American Parents of Children with Disabilities (AFCAMP), led by Executive Director Ann Smith. Ann joins me on the podcast this week.   We need more parents as educational advocates if we're going to make real change happen. And the more they learn, the more comfortable they are with speaking up for their children and for the community as a whole. Ann shares what those resources are and why they're so incredibly important. About Ann Smith, JD, MBA: Ann R. Smith, JD, MBA is a “change-maker” who can speak to the importance of engaging families, youth, and community to address inequitable policies and practices that produce disparate outcomes across the intersecting education, juvenile justice, and health (physical / behavioral / mental) systems.   Ann is Executive Director of African Caribbean American Parents of Children with Disabilities, Inc. (AFCAMP) commonly known as AFCAMP Advocacy for Children, a parent-led nonprofit organization headquartered in Hartford, CT. For 20+ years AFCAMP has provided resources, training and advocacy to promote authentic family and youth voices to inform decision-making within child-serving systems including education, juvenile justice, child welfare and children's behavioral health.   Pursuing equity fuels AFCAMP's work to transform systems and reduce the adverse and disproportionate impacts experienced by youth of color and youth with disabilities. A multi-level approach is employed to reform systemic policies and practices that proliferate inequitable education, justice, health, and economic outcomes for children and families of color with a particular focus on those that are Black.   Ann currently serves as a Tri-Chair of the Connecticut Children's Behavioral Health Plan Implementation Advisory Board. She also serves on other advisory bodies and nonprofit boards of directors. She held multiple roles over 16 years of service with the State of Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) and its predecessors. Ann is also an attorney licensed by the State of CT. A serious contender in the run-up to awards season, this little star of a film flares with unexpected brilliance—capturing imaginations and challenging long-standing assumptions about Black people, swimming, history, current realities, the surprising facts of life (and death), and joy—“Black joy.” Guests: athletes Rabb and Smith, filmmaker Luchina Fisher, and historian Kevin Dawson. The film TEAM DREAM was made possible by the Queen Collective—an initiative begun by executive producer Queen Latifah and Procter & Gamble—to create opportunities for women filmmakers of color to tell their stories by providing access to mentorship, production support, and distribution.

The Day I Became a Hurricane (Hooked on Books Jamrock, 2022) is a children's educational book on hurricanes written by Dr. Rose-Ann Smith. Based on current research on natural disasters and disaster risk management, the book aims to educate children on the development of a hurricane and its impacts. It introduces them to hurricane preparedness while seamlessly interweaving an underlying story about self-acceptance and self-identity. The book therefore manages to accomplish a lot, not only imbuing practical knowledge about hurricanes, but also teaching children important life lessons concerning the perils of peer pressure and getting carried away with power, as well as the importance of accepting yourself for who you are. The book is meant for children in grades 1 to 5 but can be enjoyed by persons of any age who wish to learn more about hurricanes, serving as a very creative means of information dissemination on the topic. Dr. Smith holds a PhD in Human Geography. She is a lecturer and consultant in disaster risk management and climate change adaptation based at the Department of Geography and Geology, the University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica. Dr. Smith is passionate about community development and community-based disaster risk management, with a strong focus on resilience building and sustainable livelihoods. Her other areas of interest include cultural tourism, eco-tourism, environmental management, and issues faced by indigenous populations and other highly vulnerable groups. She also believes that children are central to disaster risk reduction. The Day I Became a Hurricane is her first piece of children's literature, and marks the first in a series of books she hopes to develop to educate children on disasters. Aleem Mahabir is a PhD candidate in Geography at the University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica. His research interests lie at the intersection of Urban Geography, Social Exclusion and Psychology.
