Editor's note: Today's special episode comes to us from our friends at The Conduit, who operate under the Crewest Studio network of podcasts alongside NOT REAL ART. In the ‘90s, rock was rock, hip-hop was hip-hop, and never the twain did meet. Then, at the turn of the century, a 73-minute, genre-bending bomb exploded onto the music scene, shattering notions about the limits of creativity and collaboration. Uneasy Listening, Vol. I, a joint record from like-minded DJs P and Z-Trip, broke genre conventions by mixing rock ‘n' roll mainstays like Rush and Pat Benatar with dance and hip-hop cuts from Madonna, Redman, and The Pharcyde.Welcome to The Conduit, a podcast featuring candid conversations with professional musicians who give listeners the unvarnished truth about being an artist in the music industry. In today's episode, L.A.-based DJ, producer, and musician Dan Ubick (aka Constantine “Connie” Price) sits down with Zach Sciacca (better known as DJ Z-Trip) to discuss the musician's pioneering work as a key player in the mash-ups movement.“It wasn't like I set out to become a DJ,” says Z-Trip, whose Uneasy Listening arrived on the scene in 2001, just as samples, remixes, and mashups were gaining credibility as a valid form of self-expression. “It was very much about me having this music and wanting to share it,” he continues. “Once I realized that I could put it together and I could expose people to the things that I liked, the DJ thing came into play.” Widely known as both the godfather of mashups and “America's Best DJ,” an award he received in 2009 from the DJ Times, Z-Trip is also renowned for his technical abilities and production skills. Over the years, he's collaborated with innovative artists like Nas, Beck, Public Enemy, and DJ Shadow, remixing songs from artists as varied as Bob Marley and the Butthole Surfers. In his interview, Z-Trip shares the brightest pearls of wisdom he's pocketed along the way: “One thing I learned through the arc of my whole career is take chances,” he says. “Be risky, try to push boundaries. Don't always play it safe. There's a time to play it safe, there's a time to lock in.”Z-Trip also touches on his favorite genre-bending tracks (see Afrika Bambaataa's “Planet Rock”), why creative consistency trumps big milestones, and how to find like-minded artists traveling a similar career path. His advice to aspiring DJs? “Every gig, go into it like it's your first [and last],” he says, adding, “put your heart and fucking soul into it because you never know who's watching.” Key Points From This Episode:How the contrasting worlds of New York and Arizona influenced Zach's taste in music. The diverse collection of 12-inch singles that led him to become a DJ.Why ‘Rock the Bells' by LL Cool J epitomizes Zach's genre-bending style.Zach's belief in pushing boundaries rather than chasing money or trends. The unique sense of discovery that attracted him to hip-hop.Talent over appearance: the freaks, geeks, and outcasts that were also drawn to the genre.Insight into Zach's process of producing his own music; which started with pause tapes. The story of the ‘Rockstar' track on Return of the DJ that caught the attention of...

New Employee Onboarding and Business Planning Strategies What You Will Learn: Rock's top strategies for more effective new employee onboarding and quarterly business planning Why Rock plans and sets his life in 90-day increments rather than waiting until the end of the year to plan for the next year Why Rock suggests dividing your business into four key planning areas: traffic (leads), nurture (funnel), sales, and fulfillment What important practices Rock recommends to keep moving forward and stay prepared and on plan for each quarter Why you should continually be reviewing what is and isn't working and making minor adjustments to improve your systems What important lessons and growing pains Rock experienced in his own real estate business during its growth Why hiring the right people for the right roles is the key to growth, and why new employee onboarding requires understanding both the position and candidate How Rock's “Me-We-They” hiring and training system helps new employees get a high-level understanding of their role and develop confidence Rock shares the details of a series of mistakes he made hiring personal assistants, and he discusses the important lessons he learned Why business leaders need to transition their mindset from trying to save money hiring talent to seeing the value new hires add to the organization Why Rock measures results and doesn't micromanage how employees spend their time or when they choose to do their work New Employee Onboarding and Business Planning Strategies As your business scales up, so must your processes and practices. New employee onboarding and business planning are two key areas you need to master to continue growing your business beyond the seven-figure mark. This week's guest, Rock Thomas, understands how important these strategies are. As a bestselling author, respected speaker, thought leader, and real estate entrepreneur, Rock has mastered these key skills. In this episode of the Elite Entrepreneurs podcast, Rock shares invaluable insights and lessons he learned on his own entrepreneurial journey that can help you get the right employees into the right roles and strategize for your business year-round. Planning Every 90 Days In his efforts to master new employee onboarding and business planning, Rock Thomas realized that looking forward to the future only at the end of the year wasn't enough. Instead, he plans everything in 90-day increments. He then periodically tracks his progress throughout that 90-day period so that he can adjust his strategies to lean into what is working for his business and correct for what isn't working. By paying close attention to his business all year long, Rock is able to pivot when needed and ensure that he meets his goals. If the only time you're setting aside time for planning for your business is at the end of the year, you miss opportunities to refine your systems and strategies for the other eleven months. Instead, do periodic check-ins on your progress and allow yourself the time and room to maneuver around unexpected challenges. As Rock said, take ownership of both your big wins and your mistakes. More Effective New Employee Onboarding Rock uses what he calls a “Me-We-They” strategy for new employee onboarding and training. First, he has the employee spend time observing someone else doing the job at a high level, to set their expectations for the role. Then, the employee and the person training them work together so that the employee gains the skills, experience, and confidence to work independently before they are asked to do so. Then and only then, the employee is fully integrated into their role. As Rock said during the interview, “first we date before we get married”. In other words, the employee is given a probationary period to get familiar with the role and to ensure that it's the right fit, both from the employee's perspective and for the needs of the business. This careful and proven new employee onboarding process empowers the new team member to take ownership of their role and of their productivity. Throwing an employee into the deep end of the pool right away can cause them to struggle to meet expectations, but giving them time to learn and grow confident helps ensure that they can do the job to the best of their ability. Why Rock your Retirement? A FAQ Retirement is not just about money. Why Rock Your Retirement? Hi, I'm Kathe Kline and I've been working with retirees and pre-retirees since 1990. Over the years I've noticed that happiness in retirement had very little to do with how much money you had, (unless you are living in poverty) and had a lot more to do with what you decide to do with your time after you retire. I had clients who had huge houses who were not having a good retirement, and clients who were living in tiny mobile homes who were having the time of their lives. What was the difference? Why were some having a great retirement and others were miserable? In 2015 I gave up my securities license and decided to live a slower paced life. I wanted to help people, but in a different way than I was doing it before. Although I still have a small financial planning practice, I generally do not accept new clients. How can I help you? Many times it is difficult for people to go from working 2000 hours to zero. It's great for the first few months, but then some of us hit a wall. Depression sets in. Sometimes it even leads to divorce because two people who were apart for 8-10 hours a day suddenly find themselves together for 24 hours a day. For some that works… but for others it doesn't. What do we talk about at Rock Your Retirement? We talk about retirement in a different way. Each week I interview two types of guests. The first are the Retirees that are “Rocking their Retirement” in some way. The Rock Your Retirement Show focuses on: * Social and Family * Adventure and Travel * Volunteer and Philanthropy * Spirit/Soul/Health Issues * Sex (But we usually don't ask our Retirees about this!) * Baby Boomer/Sandwich Generation Issues (Taking care of your children AND your parents at the same time) How often are the Rock Your Retirement shows released? Rock Your Retirement Retiree Interviews: My intention is to release these interviews on Mondays. These will be interviews with people who can show you how to Rock Your Retirement, because they are rocking their own retirement in one of the ways we discuss. Are they traveling? Did they get closer with their spouse or children because they had more time to do that? Whatever the retiree is doing, we want you to hear about it so that it will spark something in YOU so that you can decide how you want to live in retirement…regardless of the amount of money you've saved. Rock Your Retirement Vendor Interviews: These interviews are with people or businesses that can help with the issues of helping your family members. Most people who find out that they need to help a parent or spouse do not understand all of the options available to them. For example, my own father has Parkinson's Disease and I did not find out about Adult Day Care (I hate that name) until 2015. Adult Day Care is not only is a less expensive alternative to Home Care, but I think it provides better care for your loved one because of the socialization aspect. One would think that 1:1 care would be better, but often it is not. When people are together in groups they often have better outcomes than when they are sitting at home with one caregiver. How long are the Rock Your Retirement Shows? We strive to keep these shows at about a half hour, give or take. How can I listen to the Rock Your Retirement Show? You have several options. Once the show is released, you'll be able to listen on iTunes, Stitcher, Podcast Addict, and all the Podcast apps that go on a smart phone. If you don't have a smart phone you can listen on your Android or Apple device. If you don't have either of those, you can subscribe to the feed,
