The 1980s was a pivotal era in the evolution of music, witnessing the emergence of various genres that would shape the sound of the decade and beyond. Among these, electro hip hop and funk stood out as vibrant expressions of urban culture, each with its own distinct origins and influences. The roots of 80s electro hip hop can be traced back to the streets of New York City, where DJs and musicians experimented with blending elements of funk, disco, and electronic music. One of the key figures in this movement was Afrika Bambaataa, who, along with his group the Soulsonic Force, released the seminal track "Planet Rock" in 1982. Characterized by its use of synthesizers, drum machines, and futuristic soundscapes, "Planet Rock" laid the foundation for electro hip hop and inspired countless artists to explore the possibilities of electronic instrumentation in hip hop music. Meanwhile, 80s funk experienced a resurgence fueled by artists such as Prince, Rick James, and George Clinton. Building on the foundations laid by pioneers like James Brown and Sly and the Family Stone, these artists infused funk with elements of rock, pop, and electronic music, creating a sound that was both innovative and infectious. Tracks like Prince's "Purple Rain" and Rick James' "Super Freak" became anthems of the era, blending irresistible grooves with bold experimentation. While electro hip hop and funk emerged from different musical traditions, they shared a common ethos rooted in innovation, rebellion, and self-expression. Both genres served as soundtracks to the vibrant culture of the 1980s, reflecting the energy and diversity of urban life. From the streets of New York City to the clubs of Los Angeles, electro hip hop and funk provided a voice for a generation, inspiring dance floors and sparking imaginations. As the 80s gave way to the 90s, the influence of electro hip hop and funk continued to reverberate throughout the music world, shaping the sounds of hip hop, R&B, and electronic dance music for decades to come. Yet, the spirit of innovation and creativity that defined these genres remains as vibrant today as it was in the heyday of the 1980s, a testament to the enduring power of music to unite, inspire, and transcend boundaries.

Editor's note: Today's special episode comes to us from our friends at The Conduit, who operate under the Crewest Studio network of podcasts alongside NOT REAL ART. In the ‘90s, rock was rock, hip-hop was hip-hop, and never the twain did meet. Then, at the turn of the century, a 73-minute, genre-bending bomb exploded onto the music scene, shattering notions about the limits of creativity and collaboration. Uneasy Listening, Vol. I, a joint record from like-minded DJs P and Z-Trip, broke genre conventions by mixing rock ‘n' roll mainstays like Rush and Pat Benatar with dance and hip-hop cuts from Madonna, Redman, and The Pharcyde.Welcome to The Conduit, a podcast featuring candid conversations with professional musicians who give listeners the unvarnished truth about being an artist in the music industry. In today's episode, L.A.-based DJ, producer, and musician Dan Ubick (aka Constantine “Connie” Price) sits down with Zach Sciacca (better known as DJ Z-Trip) to discuss the musician's pioneering work as a key player in the mash-ups movement.“It wasn't like I set out to become a DJ,” says Z-Trip, whose Uneasy Listening arrived on the scene in 2001, just as samples, remixes, and mashups were gaining credibility as a valid form of self-expression. “It was very much about me having this music and wanting to share it,” he continues. “Once I realized that I could put it together and I could expose people to the things that I liked, the DJ thing came into play.” Widely known as both the godfather of mashups and “America's Best DJ,” an award he received in 2009 from the DJ Times, Z-Trip is also renowned for his technical abilities and production skills. Over the years, he's collaborated with innovative artists like Nas, Beck, Public Enemy, and DJ Shadow, remixing songs from artists as varied as Bob Marley and the Butthole Surfers. In his interview, Z-Trip shares the brightest pearls of wisdom he's pocketed along the way: “One thing I learned through the arc of my whole career is take chances,” he says. “Be risky, try to push boundaries. Don't always play it safe. There's a time to play it safe, there's a time to lock in.”Z-Trip also touches on his favorite genre-bending tracks (see Afrika Bambaataa's “Planet Rock”), why creative consistency trumps big milestones, and how to find like-minded artists traveling a similar career path. His advice to aspiring DJs? “Every gig, go into it like it's your first [and last],” he says, adding, “put your heart and fucking soul into it because you never know who's watching.” Key Points From This Episode:How the contrasting worlds of New York and Arizona influenced Zach's taste in music. The diverse collection of 12-inch singles that led him to become a DJ.Why ‘Rock the Bells' by LL Cool J epitomizes Zach's genre-bending style.Zach's belief in pushing boundaries rather than chasing money or trends. The unique sense of discovery that attracted him to hip-hop.Talent over appearance: the freaks, geeks, and outcasts that were also drawn to the genre.Insight into Zach's process of producing his own music; which started with pause tapes. The story of the ‘Rockstar' track on Return of the DJ that caught the attention of...

Few DJs have had as big an impact on music and culture as Zach Sciacca, nor do they work as hard. Whether in the studio, behind the decks, or behind the scenes, he is always pushing the boundaries and honing his craft. Better known as DJ Z-Trip, Zach is a genre-bending Los Angeles musician, the recipient of the 2009 America's Best DJ Award, and a pioneer of the mashup movement. As a producer, he has worked with incredible artists across genres, including the likes of LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Kasabian, and Dan the Automator. His love for all styles of music and how they can work together is groundbreaking and inspiring, and his innate funkiness and technical ability have led him to compose scores for video games like EA Skate, create mashups for Activision's DJ Hero, and score music for films such as Infamy, La Bare, and Bob Marley: Legend Remixed.  In today's conversation, Zach shares some major pearls of wisdom about the importance of pushing the boundaries whenever you have the chance and investing your energy in constant evolution, not what sells or attracts the most followers. We also touch on how the pandemic helped him reconnect with his ‘why' and why he believes that true success is about the aggregate, not the benchmarks. Zach has a work ethic to be admired, as well as a deep love for music, an approachable demeanor, and a relentlessly positive attitude, and listeners will benefit greatly from hearing his story today. We hope you'll join us! Key Points From This Episode: How the contrasting worlds of New York and Arizona influenced Zach's taste in music. The story of how his collection of 12-inch singles led Zach to become a DJ. Some favorite examples of tracks that blend genres, like Afrika Bambaataa's ‘Planet Rock'. The boundary-pushing sampling and discovery that drew Zach to hip hop. Insight into Zach's process of producing his own music, which started with pause tapes. The ‘Rockstar' track on Return of the DJ that caught the attention of Zach's peers. Why he believes that the mashup requires a certain level of open-mindedness. The value of working with those on the same trajectory as you, rather than more established artists, and building the right team. Key lessons from Zach's career: be risky, push boundaries, and don't always play it safe! The work ethic and commitment to improvement that Zach demonstrates every day. What the pandemic taught him about reconnecting with his ‘why'. How live streaming and virtual raves influenced his practice and his mindset. Zach shares his belief in staying true to himself and allowing the universe to provide. Why he believes that success is about the aggregate, not about hitting benchmarks. His advice for DJs: play every gig like it's your first and your last! He cautions musicians against getting caught up in the numbers, likes, and followers. Skateboard Marketing Ltd. Company Overview:  Skateboard Marketing Ltd. has been at the forefront of independent metal radio promotion for the past 30 years since forming in 1991. The company has worked with legendary rock and metal heavyweights such as Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Pantera, Soilwork, Testament, Morbid Angel, Black Label Society and Kid Rock, among countless others. Skateboard Marketing operates within North America and is located in New York. Their concept is to get radio airplay in any place that has metal or rock programming. They still believe in artist development and building a fan base for the unknown artist. Every band has their time to shine, but that takes artist development.    Skateboard Marketing Ltd owner, Munsey Ricci, is a former PolyGram Records executive who was the Director of National Metal Promotion from 1989-1991 and created the first metal department for the label and all affiliated labels, including Mercury, Polydor, RooArt, and London Records. Ricci also worked for the famed Combat/In-Effect Records in Hollis, Queens. Ricci was also on the editorial staff and collated the magazine for CMJ Media and a former syndicated radio programmer prior to PolyGram Records. Ricci spent 5 years as MD/PD for his college station WQCC while attending college.    Covering the entire spectrum of radio with syndicated, satellite, commercial, and college metal. Skateboard Marketing covers over 350 stations nationally for the US and Canada. This includes all the syndicated, commercial metal and rock specialty shows with college and public radio. "It's any outlet where a record can be heard" Artist development starts on the street, in someone's bedroom on their stereo, or even a fan listening to something new in their car. Today a new band will have 20 fans, tomorrow they will have 50. It's all a stepping stone to bring something cool to the masses.  It all applies to heritage artists as well. The only difference is they sold 2 million records to go with it. It's about creating the new fan whether it's for Motorhead and Black Sabbath, or for new artists such as Misery Kills.    The company's staple roster consists of, Overkill, Testament, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Exodus, Death Angel, Soilwork, Biohazard, Ozzy Osbourne, Doro Pesch, and Sepultura  It's a huge pleasure to be  graced by talent on all levels. There is nothing better than getting on the phones in the morning and "Making something from nothing" Music is in the blood of every band, industry executive and fan.    The companies office is based 25 minutes east of Manhattan, in Neighboring Valley Stream. They have a staff of 2 people covering syndicated, commercial , and college radio, as well as social media on board. New York-based radio promotion powerhouse Skateboard Marketing Ltd., headed by music industry veteran Munsey Ricci, is celebrating its 30th anniversary of taking heavy metal and hard rock music to the airwaves.   “It's been 30 years already,” Ricci says. “Time seems to fly when you're having fun. I've been blessed and graced to have the opportunity to work with the artist roster we have. Every morning I get up and still live to walk into the office and do this gig. I just don't get tired of it and need more!”   Founded in 1991 by the former PolyGram Records executive, Skateboard Marketing Ltd. quickly established itself as the leader in radio and artist development with a focus on all formats of aggressive music for three decades. Love of music, longstanding relationships and profound respect from colleagues and artists have earned the company a reputation as the go-to company to for national radio promotion in North America.   “Munsey and Skateboard Marketing do what they do because they LOVE IT,” says SiriusXM's Jose “Metal Ambassador” Mangin. “There's no one in the world that is as seasoned and dedicated to the art of metal promotion. I've been helping Munsey spread the good gospel of metal for 25 years, and we're both just getting started! Congrats on 30 f'in years of dominance!”   Syndicated radio host and author Full Metal Jackie adds, “Munsey is integral to the heavy music scene. He carries the torch proudly and at this point he is basically a de facto member of most of your favorite metal bands. Cheers Munsey & Skateboard.”   These sentiments are echoed by the artist's Skateboard Marketing Ltd. has represented, with many noting the integral part the company has played in their success.   “Skateboard Marketing has been part of my team for 20 years now,” says Megadeth bassist David Ellefson. “They understand and connect with my fans and record buying customers which makes the business of music that much better and easier. Happy 30th Skateboard and thanks for all you do!”   Says Overkill vocalist Bobby Blitz, “Congratulations to Munsey and Skateboard on 30 years of keeping the airwaves chock full of the heaviest metal! For decades now we call him the 6th member in the Overkill camp, as he has gone above and beyond to help bring our craft to those who crave it. Happy anniversary Skateboard, from Chaly and the boys!”   Singerman Entertainment's Todd Singerman notes, “Skateboard Marketing, under the enthusiastic stewardship of Munsey Ricci, has helped consistently propel Motörhead's music to the ears and hearts of thousands upon thousands of ears for over three decades.  Munsey remains that rare combination of class and action.”   Add Wendy Dio, “Munsey Ricci and Skateboard Marketing have supported every Dio record throughout Ronnie's career and continue to support us.”   While Director of National Metal Radio Promotion at PolyGram Records, Ricci created the first metal radio department for the label and all of its affiliates, including Mercury Records, Polydor Records, RooArt and London Records, where the artist roster included bands like Mortal Sin, Onslaught, Yngwie Malmsteen, Kiss, Doro Pesch, The Scorpions, Rush, Tony MacAlpine, and Vinny Moore.   Ricci also previously worked for CMJ Media and Combat/In-Effect Records, and programmed radio for five years prior to his label stint, learning and working next to some of the most influential people in the radio promotion world and leading to the success of Skateboard Marketing Ltd.   “I've had the pleasure of knowing Munsey for close to 25 years,” says Rob Rush, Program Director/PM Drive Jock 94.3 The Shark Long Island. “He is a consummate professional and has always gone above and beyond for the bands that he promotes, and the radio stations that play his bands. He is a true class act and I'm proud to call him one of my best friends! Here's to 30 more years of Munsey and Skateboard Marketing!!!”   SiriusXM Volume's “TrunkNation” host Eddie Trunk conquers. “I've known and worked with Munsey for all 30 years of Skateboard Marketing and beyond,” he says. “He's always had a great passion for rock and metal music and all the projects he works. All the best for the next 30 to all at Skateboard!”   Seeing a void for heavy music in the radio trades, Ricci launched Metal Contraband in 2016. Metal Contraband, in conjunction with Radio Contraband, fills that gap as a destination for labels, management and artists looking for accurate information, including a metal chart consisting of commercial, syndication as well as large college stations, a metal news section for up-to-date news on tours and festivals, ad dates and street dates. Also included is an overall release schedule for metal add dates at radio. Metal Contraband has become the most reliable source to gauge the success of a record at radio.   Adds Joey Z of longtime Skateboard client Life Of Agony, “It's hard to believe that Munsey and the team at Skateboard Marketing have been grinding it out for all of us for 30 years. Life Of Agony is so grateful for all the help and support the team has given us throughout the years... We wish them continued success for at least another 30!!”   “Munsey is the only metal radio game in town,” says Adrenaline PR's Maria Ferrero. “Period.”    The company's roster has ranged from the smallest to the biggest heavy metal and hard rock bands. Its staple roster consists of Motörhead, Overkill, Testament, Judas Priest, Ronnie James Dio, Black Sabbath, Exodus, Death Angel, Soilwork, Parkway Drive, Ozzy Osbourne, Sepultura, Soulfly, and many labels including Napalm, Nuclear Blast, Century Media, E- One Entertainment, Warner Music, BMG, Sony, Pavement, Metalville, Spinefarm, Fearless and Universal. Skateboard Marketing Ltd. has also worked on radio campaigns with Iron Maiden, Monster Magnet, Crowbar, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Doro Pesch, Veil Of Maya, At The Gates, Body Count, High On Fire and many others.   “Rip Magazine and Skateboard Marketing rolled loud and proud together back in the day,” says Lonn M. Friend, author of Life on Planet Rock. “Congrats to Munsey on three decades of prosperous decadence.” SKATEBOARD MARKETING online: www.Skateboard-Marketing.com www.facebook.com/pages/Skateboard-Marketing-Ltd/102440986494312 www.instagram.com/skateboardmarketing https://twitter.com/Skateboardmkt www.pinterest.com/skateboardmkt http://skateboardmarketing.tumblr.com www.youtube.com/skateboardmarketing1 METAL CONTRABAND online: http://metalcontraband.com www.facebook.com/metalcontraband www.instagram.com/metalcontraband https://twitter.com/Metalcontraband For press inquiries and additional information, please contact Adrenaline PR:  Maria Ferrero, 732-462-4262, maria@adrenalinepr.com Get your free 3 Keys to Freedom training at www.iFreedomHackNow.com
