Keaton SimonsTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Keaton Simons. Keaton has been a Hollywood fixture in the music & film industry since he was a little kid. Keaton's parents, and grandparents have been in the film & television business for decades. His grandfather was a screenwriter for some of the most decorated & loved films in history, and his parents have both starred in & written some of the most beloved projects in the business. Keaton started off singing and acting in projects as a small child and quickly fell in love with playing music. In this episode, Keaton and I chat about his early years and some of those early projects. We then transition into his diving into the music scene. I ask him about his moving to Nashville, and some of the projects he has worked on as a musician. Keaton has played with some of the biggest names in music, like: Snoop Dogg, Danny Elfman, Jason Mraz, Pharcyde, Darryl McDaniels, Chris Cornell, Gnarles Barkley, and is currently the lead guitarist for Brett Young. I ask him about each of these projects, and Keaton shares fun stories of working with these music icons. Keaton explains what a musical director is and how he has been able to translate artists' musical ideas, into fully realized products. Naturally we talk about why some of the biggest musical stars of today are moving to Nashville, and what that city has to offer artists in the local the music scene. He even lets me play one of the songs he & Jason Mraz co-wrote! Keaton is currently on a world tour with country music showman Brett Young. If they are playing near you, you won't want to miss them!

It's DILLA TIME This month's special is about Jay Dee aka J Dilla, a Detroit hip-hop producer's whose work is so prolific and influential his MPC sampler is in the Smithsonian. Dilla worked with hip-hop and R&B greats - Q-Tip, A Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes, The Roots, The Pharcyde, D'Angelo, Common, Madlib and made his own signature rhythm that others copied - he used a sampler like no one had before. Through his unique methods of playing with layered timing, rhythmic expectation, polyrhythm, samples stretching and feel and his ability to bend time-signatures to his will, Dilla changed how music moves, and made Dilla Time (a term coined in the 2022 book of the same name by Dan Charnas). We explore his production work, solo music and the legacy of his final album from 2006, released three days before he died - Donuts - a sample psychedelic beat tape of melancholic beauty and a magic trick of sampling that serves as a towering and influential creative statement. The accompanying Dilla playlist. * Support Nialler9 on Patreon, get event discounts, playlists, ad-free episodes and join our Discord community Listen on Apple | Android | Patreon | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS Feed | Pod.Link

Patreon.com/thequestionshiphop questionshiphop.com youtube.com/thequestionshiphop Originally broadcast on May 24, 2021. Simply put, Tre Hardson aka Slimkid3 is a legend. Hip hop was forever changed in 1992 when his group the Pharcyde emerged onto the scene with their classic debut album 'Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde.' The group brought a decidedly animated and imaginative element to their songwriting and presence on the microphone – and Tre definitely stood out with his distinct melodic voice; you could really even say that a lot of these rappers who sing owe a bit to Slimkid3. The Pharcyde's second album Labcabincalifornia sported a darker sound (and early contributions from the great Jay Dee aka Jay Dilla) that reflected the frustration the group was going through with both the industry – and internally. Tre did one last album with the group (2000's Plain Rap) before embarking on a solo career that also has seen him team up with DJ Nu-Mark from Jurassic 5, Ozomatli, and occasional reunions with various members of his Pharcyde brethren – and today they are back at it (as a trio), touring the world and possibly poised to release new music soon. In this Can't Knock the Shuffle classic, we break down stories behind the following songs: "Groupie Therapy" (Pharcyde 'Labcabincalifornia', 1995) "Trust" (Pharcyde 'Plain Rap', 2000) "King" feat Diamond D and K-Natural ('Slimkid3 & Nu-Mark', 2016) "Life is Love" ('Liberation', 2002) "Pick It Up" feat Dillon Cooper (TRDMRK, 2019) "4 Better or 4 Worse" (Pharcyde 'Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde', 1992) The Questions Hip-Hop: Instagram Sean Kantrowitz: Instagram Slimkid3: Instagram
This week is a mini-episode where we look back at a Friday night showdown last year on 9-28-2024 on our TikTok and IG. between albums 93 'Till Infinity VS. Bizarre Ride 2: The Pharcyde. The members of Bring The Noise Podcast vote themselves and reveal who the fans had picked as well.
For this episode we're joined all the way from Harlem in New York City by venerable hip hop writer Havelock Nelson. The first rap editor at industry bible Billboard talks about his early years in his birthplace Guyana and his love of marching bands in the country's capital Georgetown. From there we hear about his family's move to Brooklyn in 1973 and his early exposure to rap and breakbeat tapes in high school. Havelock recalls the pioneering hip hop fanzines Word Up! and Black Beat – plus the seminal rap writings of Greg Tate and Nelson George – before recounting his experiences as a columnist on Billboard. He also explains the genesis of Bring the Noise, the 1991 "guide to rap music and hip-hop culture" he co-authored with fellow RBP contributor Michael A. Gonzales. Mention of our guest's 1994 interview with the Notorious B.I.G. takes us into discussion of the synergy between hip hop's rising stars and rap media such as The Source magazine. Havelock also reflects on memorable interviews he did with the likes of KRS-One, Slick Rick, LL Cool J and Salt-N-Pepa. The latter duo takes us into audio clips from an audio interview with a Virginia-born artist who was profoundly influenced by them: the one and only Missy Elliott, speaking to Sara Scribner after the release of 1997's debut album Supa Dupa Fly... followed by the voices of her collaborators Timbaland and Magoo. The publication of Taschen's monumental new 75 Years of Atlantic Records prompts reflections on the legendary label co-founded by the late Ahmet Ertegun, plus our thoughts on the present-day roster that includes Charli XCX, Bruno Mars, Coldplay and Ed Sheeran. The episode concludes with quotes from newly-added library pieces about artists such as Wee Willie Harris, Jeff Barry & Ellie Greenwich, the Pharcyde and André 3000. Many thanks to special guest Havelock Nelson. Find his writing on Rock's Backpages and join his Going Way Back group on Facebook.

One of hip-hops' most creative and entertaining groups, The Pharcyde, released their classic debut album Bizarre Ride 2 The Pharcyde in 1992. It was an outstanding success, thanks in large part to their smash single Passin' Me By. Rappers Fatlip, Slimkid3, Booty Brown, Imani and producer J-Swift crafted a witty and comical album paired with great beats and rhymes that still rank in the top tier list of rap albums. https://www.tiktok.com/@brandonhetzel996?_t=ZT-8uM9h4rf9Y6&_r=1 https://www.instagram.com/str8_the_clippa?igsh=cTBzNnFhenRkN3Nl&utm_source=qr https://www.facebook.com/share/1QfmJmwwN6/?mibextid=wwXIfr

Hello friends! "Home Free" writer/producer, Lenny Barszap and GRAMMY® Award-winning musician-producer Adrian Quesada (Black Pumas) who did the score and soundtrack for the movie are my guests for episode 1456! The "Home Free" soundtrack is out TODAY wherever you stream or download music. You can also get the double-vinyl HERE on Nine Mile Records and features members of The Beastie Boys, The Pharcyde, Dinosaur Jr., Luscious Jackson and more. "Home Free" is based on the real-life experience of Onion Creek Productions founder and director/producer Aaron Brown and writer/producer Lenny Barszap of Entertaining Entertainment. In 1997, as sophomores at the University of Texas at Austin, Brown and Barszap invited an unhoused philosophy professor to crash on their porch – where they hosted several parties, many of which their friend and fellow UT Austin student at the time, Adrian Quesada, also attended. Twenty-five years later, this became the premise for the film “Home Free,” which explores profound themes of friendship, personal growth, and social impact through the lens of comedy (think Dazed & Confused meets Superbad). This episode of TNT brings us to the left coast to dig into the famed LA independent label Stones Throw Records. To kick this series off, we bring you something bittersweet - 2006's iconoclastic “Donuts” by rapper, producer, beatmaker, and record collector extraordinaire J Dilla - released on February 7, 2006, just three days before Dilla tragically passed away.
Seemed like a good moment to salute the city of LA, a city I never thought I'd end up residing in as a kid but where I now live and don't plan on leaving. A huge city, where horrible fires and climate change have destroyed the homes of thousands of people including some of those featured on this mix. On this episode of One Song, Diallo and LUXXURY break down The Pharcyde's “Runnin',” the track from the legendary hip-hop group that brought new flavor to the West Coast sound in the ‘90s. They dive into the group's introspective lyrics about vulnerability and personal struggle, how they met and collaborated with soon-to-be legendary producer J Dilla (at the time known as Jay Dee), and how Dilla's genre-reinventing beatmaking style – blending old school hip-hop and bossa nova samples – helped The Pharcyde popularize the alternative hip-hop movement.
This episode briefly examines two tracks produced by J Dilla: "Runnin'" by the Pharcyde and "Show Me What You Got" by Busta Rhymes. I discuss the stratification in Dilla's beats, their stuttering quality, their use and avoidance of quantization, and the response of the rappers to those beats.
On this flashback of Take It Personal, we're hitting you with a combined remastered version of episodes 29 & 30, our Native Tongues Tribute. This 12+ hour episode features music from the most important, and influential hip-hop collective we've ever seen. With the help and hustle of both DJ Red Alert and Chris Lighty, the Native Tongues were a force to be reckoned with. The Jungle Brothers paved the way for groups like De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and Black Sheep. Prior to The Flava Unit, Queen Latifah was this crew's Den mother. Along with her protege Monie Love, they were both instrumental in helping the female movement in hip-hop. The Native Tongues provided plenty of classic albums, countless anthems and produced more offspring than Joe Jackson. The Natives helped jumpstart the careers of Busta Rhymes, Chi-Ali, Mos Def, J Dilla and have influenced artists such as Brand Nubian, K.M.D., Common, The Beatnuts, Bush Babees, The Roots, Slum Village, Little Brother, Kanye West, Black Star, Pharrell, Hieroglyphics, The Pharcyde, J5, Kedrick Lamar, Pusha T, Andre 3000 and even Nas. The Pharcyde don't take themselves too seriously, but are without a doubt serious musicians with ideas and charisma to spare.Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde is clever, funny, and crisp. July 20, 2024, marks 10 years since Cork venue the Pavilion, run by Pat Conway, Stevie G and Joe Kelly, closed its doors. It left an indelible mark on me and so many music lovers. Friendships were formed there, ideas were hatched, bands were watched, and DJs filled the floors. On this episode of the TPOE podcast, a whole host of the people who loved the Pav recall the six years when the recession took hold of Ireland and the Pavilion opened its doors. The first gig was Evan Dando and the Lemonheads in April 2008. The following year, Kanye West and the xx both graced its stage and the Pav was up and running. Theo Parrish, King Britt, the Pharcyde, Roy Ayers, Floating Points, Franz Ferdinand Eddie Reader, Lee Fields, Candi Staton, NASA, Theesatisfaction, Shabazz Palaces, Sly and Robbie, Lonnie Liston Smith, and Rakim are just some of the big international acts who played the Pav in that time. It also hosted and supported so many Irish acts, from Altered Hours to Hozier, Saint Yorda to Gilla Band. There were club nights like Go Deep, Sunday Times and Floating Joints which called the Pav home over the years. We hear about all of these and more over the course of this episode charting one of the best venues the country has ever seen. ***EDITOR'S NOTES*** This episode was originally released on YouTube on August 7th 2023. Keeping in the current groove of the time, K Red made a new beat for the episode inspired by Passing me By and we continued to showcase pictures for the video to spice up the viewing. During the final editing, Red also played around with a few transitional changes including the show logo at the beginning and ending. Gone was the recently added “theme song” to save time for more show content. Warbux also mistakingly declares this episode as the 9th installment of the show, when it was in fact, the 7th. Let's just say that maybe before the show, Quinton was on his way and everything was ok! Before diving into the main discussion, Johnny and Red catch up on what they've been listening to recently, from new Nas tracks to Chino XL. The conversation then shifts to their recent experiences and exciting encounters at the Hip-Hop Museum in Washington D.C. With in-depth facts about The Pharcyde and their journey, the hosts explore the group's formation, their near-misses with other band names before eventually settling on 'The Pharcyde.' They also discuss the unique samples that make 'Passing Me By' a timeless track, drawing from Quincy Jones, Skull Snaps, Jimi Hendrix, and more. As the episode progresses, Johnny and Red share their personal connections to the song and its impact on their lives. They also touch on the memorable black-and-white music video directed by Sanji Sanaka, which depicts the group in an upside-down world. Finally, the hosts engage in a series of fun and thought-provoking games and discussions, comparing The Pharcyde's 'Bizarre Ride to the Pharcyde' and 'Labcabincalifornia,' ranking the group's members, and debating the merits of various remixes and collaborations. "I See You" Led by the Bay Area born Destani Wolf, Destani's Piece is a sonic healing project whose compositions are lush and layered affairs, boasting rich textures that conjure vast heavenly landscapes. Filled with dreamy musical nuances--like rolling angelic harps, harmonic pianos and Wolf's otherworldly vocals, the music of Destani's Piece is reflective and meditative and each composition serves as a balm for a world, that, let's face it, can be a bit raw. The Grammy-nominated Wolf has emerged as a brilliant sonic architect and this music is restorative, comforting and healing. As for Wolf, she's been in the game since she was 15 and found herself playing live at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. Since then, she's been packing her resume' with achievement after achievement. Her voice has been heard on over forty albums, and she's worked with everyone from John Cale to Bobby McFerrin to The Pharcyde. You've heard her on video games like Call of Duty, soundtracks like Disney's The Descendents, Kevin Hart's Laugh At My Pain and Fox's So You Think You Can Dance. She's traveled the globe singing for Cirque du Soleil, is a current member of Bobby McFerrin's MOTION and she collaborates and tours with the Bandaloop Aerial Dance Company. Editor's note: Today's special episode comes to us from our friends at The Conduit, who operate under the Crewest Studio network of podcasts alongside NOT REAL ART. In the ‘90s, rock was rock, hip-hop was hip-hop, and never the twain did meet. Then, at the turn of the century, a 73-minute, genre-bending bomb exploded onto the music scene, shattering notions about the limits of creativity and collaboration. Uneasy Listening, Vol. I, a joint record from like-minded DJs P and Z-Trip, broke genre conventions by mixing rock ‘n' roll mainstays like Rush and Pat Benatar with dance and hip-hop cuts from Madonna, Redman, and The Pharcyde.Welcome to The Conduit, a podcast featuring candid conversations with professional musicians who give listeners the unvarnished truth about being an artist in the music industry. In today's episode, L.A.-based DJ, producer, and musician Dan Ubick (aka Constantine “Connie” Price) sits down with Zach Sciacca (better known as DJ Z-Trip) to discuss the musician's pioneering work as a key player in the mash-ups movement.“It wasn't like I set out to become a DJ,” says Z-Trip, whose Uneasy Listening arrived on the scene in 2001, just as samples, remixes, and mashups were gaining credibility as a valid form of self-expression. “It was very much about me having this music and wanting to share it,” he continues. “Once I realized that I could put it together and I could expose people to the things that I liked, the DJ thing came into play.” Widely known as both the godfather of mashups and “America's Best DJ,” an award he received in 2009 from the DJ Times, Z-Trip is also renowned for his technical abilities and production skills. Over the years, he's collaborated with innovative artists like Nas, Beck, Public Enemy, and DJ Shadow, remixing songs from artists as varied as Bob Marley and the Butthole Surfers. In his interview, Z-Trip shares the brightest pearls of wisdom he's pocketed along the way: “One thing I learned through the arc of my whole career is take chances,” he says. “Be risky, try to push boundaries. Don't always play it safe. There's a time to play it safe, there's a time to lock in.”Z-Trip also touches on his favorite genre-bending tracks (see Afrika Bambaataa's “Planet Rock”), why creative consistency trumps big milestones, and how to find like-minded artists traveling a similar career path. His advice to aspiring DJs? “Every gig, go into it like it's your first [and last],” he says, adding, “put your heart and fucking soul into it because you never know who's watching.” Key Points From This Episode:How the contrasting worlds of New York and Arizona influenced Zach's taste in music. The diverse collection of 12-inch singles that led him to become a DJ.Why ‘Rock the Bells' by LL Cool J epitomizes Zach's genre-bending style.Zach's belief in pushing boundaries rather than chasing money or trends. The unique sense of discovery that attracted him to hip-hop.Talent over appearance: the freaks, geeks, and outcasts that were also drawn to the genre.Insight into Zach's process of producing his own music; which started with pause tapes. The story of the ‘Rockstar' track on Return of the DJ that caught the attention of...

Iconic hip hop group De La Soul's music is finally available on streaming platforms, just in time for the fiftieth anniversary of hip hop. To say listeners are overjoyed is an understatement. Only a few days after their streaming debut, De La Soul's 1989 debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising, soared to no. 5 on the UK album chart, even topping their original 1990 high of no. 13. For fans this was a long time coming. The hip hop group had a towering presence in the 80s and 90s, their playful ingenuity and eccentricity even inspired other greats like the Beastie Boys, Childish Gambino, OutKast, and the Pharcyde. But what kept De La Soul's tunes out of rotation for decades — and thus, largely out of the public imagination — was an infuriating entanglement of legal restrictions surrounding sampling, an art form where producers take snippets of songs and stitch them together to form sonic collages. For this week's pod extra, OTM Correspondent Micah Loewinger speaks to Dan Charnas, an associate arts professor at NYU and author of the book "Dilla Time: The Life and Afterlife of J Dilla, the Hip-Hop Producer Who Reinvented Rhythm," about how music copyright law suppresses the artistic voices of hip hop producers.
